Shadypiper - would you be able to give us more information about how to take a small dog on the flight with you? Do you have any problems at the airport? Where do you put them on the plane? on arrival are there any issues brining a dog in? I would love to take my small dog to Europe with us over the summer but I always thought it was not possible.

At the moment shipments into Jebel Ali port are taking around 5 working days to be cleared. If your shipping company is good they might be able to reduce this. I work with one govt agency that can do it in 24 hours, and another private firm that takes 4 days. It should never be 2 weeks, thats worse case senario and generally means you have paperwork not correctly completed.

I agree, Daza. Why do you even care, OP? I think that we've all had it with lazy maids and it is really unfair of you to think that she should work for another family. Expats pay a lot to sponsor maids and they need good workers! Its just as easy to send to her Kish, than to send her to the Phillipines.. once you know the laws. Is it really worth Molly Moo Moo feeling awful and guilty because she's sent this woman back to the Phillipines against her will.. She wants to go to Kish, send her to Kish. Say goodbye and good luck. Your done. I really cant understand the venom directed at Maids, they are women too - maybe uneducated and not what we had hoped but they are still Mothers and Wives.

So my question is, can a maid fly to Kish and re-enter Dubai on a tourist visa WITHOUT a new sponsor - is it possible? No, she can't. Yes she can! It is very possible, She can ask a friend to go to one of the many travel agencies in Satwa and they will organize a visa for her. She will pay a deposit to them and they will sort it out. They will return her deposit when she either leaves the country or changes her residency status. Please warn her however that its going to be possibly a month wait in Kish and the tourist visa will cost her a couple of thousand. She's going to need some funds if she wants to stay in Dubai/return to Dubai. Molly Moo Moo - sorry you are dealing with this especially when your so busy. Give her what you owe her payment wise and tell her that she's on her own now if she decides to go to Kish. Ifs she's unsure about Tourist visa/ Visa info tell her to get to Satwa and talk with a Travel Agent there. Its totally not your responsibility, your doing enough as it is.

She will be your responsibility until she either has found a new sponsor or is on a flight home. Sending her to Kish or Oman will not absolve you from your responsibility so be careful with that. I agree with Lolacat, you have enough to worry about and you don't need her drama to add. Thats not true, she is only your responsibility until her visa is cancelled by you and she has an exit stamp in her passport.... once that happens your finished with her no matter where she flys out to. It does not matter where the flight is to!! Sending her to Kish is a great idea, it means she's off your responsibility and she can have some control as to what she does next. She's right, if you send her to the Phillipines now she will not be able to come back here and work which is potentially devastating for her family. <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 04/09/2014</em>

I love the fact that new schools are opening, I hope schools get to the stage where they need to compete for students, they are forced to work harder to get and keep students and perhaps the standard of education in schools may increase. I hope there is a day when schools stop this insane charging to register on the waiting list, and that the stress of finding a good school for so many parents comes to an end. Wouldn't it be amazing to have your pick of the school you want? So for me I hope it continues. :)

Nope, the jeans theory doesn't apply to me, nor the dish washing, and I've been driving for over 30 years and never experienced it, so don't think it's the seatbelts either. As Alismum said, they're always in the same place, so nor can it be the washing machine. I do, however, always hang my shirts the same way to dry, and the holes are always near where the shirts are pegged over the washing line, and I'm often shaking moths out of my washing when I bring it in, so I'm still gonna go with the moth theory until something better comes along :) If its moths than they would make holes in the back of your t-shirt as well as the front, if you have holes in the back I would say its def moths. But for me the holes are only in the front and at the bottom of the t-shirt near my waistline, its defiantly buttons on jeans or trousers causing this.

I am pretty sure I know what this is!! I have had this problem for years and its always bothered me, but I have been looking closely and I see that its only my t-shirts that I wear with jeans. My yoga t's and gym t's are never ever damaged with holes...... its the top button on your jeans, if your doing your pants up and you catch a part of your tshirt in the button and twist it, it creates a tiny tear in the cotton which just gets worse each time you wash and wear it. Fine cotton is the worst but it can happen with most types. Pay attention when your doing up your jeans and wearing a t-shirt and you will see that sometimes especially if your in a hurry you can get the shirt caught in your top button and then you pull it out and there you have it! You won't notice it until the first wash and then it becomes obvious. Edited to add: Check the location of the holes and you will see they are mostly very close to the area the top button on your jeans/trousers are. <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 17/08/2014</em>

I agree that Rainforest Cafe is awful, we took the kids there and my son on presentation of his meal actually burst into tears! The food was all beige and bland and greasy and so visually unappealing. Its got to be the worst food I have ever tried. We ended up leaving with 90% of the meal uneaten. Rhonda Locatelli is pretty good, you can do the aquarium before hand, sit down to lunch and the kids can help make the pizzas (the chefs are so great with kids), and watch them being cooked and then a cake afterwards. Oh yes and Anon is right, if you want more casual fat burger is great, they have a nice kids play area. <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 05/08/2014</em>

I am pretty certain you cant buy it here, I checked extensively last year. I even looked at air freighting it in but the courier company won't bring in an oil based paint. It was so disappointing, I had my heart set on a specific color for my house. You can find Benjamin Moore paints here, I think that is the nicest paint available in Dubai. I wish someone here knows more info? Maybe in the last 12 months someones decided to bring it in!!

I am sorry but I think its pretty harsh, can you not let her have the opportunity to go to Kish and come back on a tourist visa to search for a job. You do not have to have her on your visa, a tourist company can organize it and she can pay for it if she really wants to stay. She might be useless and lazy, but she's got a family to provide for. If it was me I would probably have more empathy for her family and her. I dont think you should give her a reference, or anything beyond what you owe her but giving her that Kish option could help her family (and maybe prevent her from a terrible situation in Saudi, or Qatar).... It might even be cheaper for you in the long run. Sending her to Kish instead of the Phillipines is way cheaper and tell her she has to pay for her own tourist visa. Anyway these girls all know how to work the system, the chances of her getting on that plane to the Phillipnes is pretty slim. Once her passport is stamped at the airport with an cancellation, you have no control over her. She will either have another ticket to Kish, or Oman and take that flight instead, or perhaps get off at another country on route - i.e. Singapore or HK both countries she won't need a visa for. Good luck, its a horrible situation to be in.

How old are your children? A 7 year old may be more mature than it seems. Our mother was working full time and I was left alone with my 5 year old sister when I was 7. What about an agency maid for half a day, then you visit them in your lunch break, and they play/sleep alone for the rest of the day until you are home? OMG are you seriously suggesting she leaves her kids alone at home? Sometimes sarcasm does not translate well online. I can't tell if your serious or joking....... I really hope your joking about this. I have a 7 year old, and if I left him alone for an afternoon the last thing he would do would be to sleep!! Try an agency maid full or part time and maybe ask your work if you could cut back on your hours or work from home. Get her to start 1 week before your nanny leaves so they can do a handover and have your mum there the first week to keep an eye on her. Emirates Home Nursing also supply nannies I believe. JPS has large class sizes, 27 per class from year 1 upwards. This is one of the reasons I moved mine to a different school least year. I have read that Nord Anglia will have max 20 per class (although I would seek clarification of this) but for this reason alone I would opt for NA. 20 vs 27 can make a huge difference IMO. FS1/FS2 at JPS is outstanding, I would say one of the best in a Dubai, but I think from Year 1 onwards there are some shorfalls and I don't believe it is as outstanding as it was 4-5 years ago. Wow, 27 children per class is too much! Your right, 20 vs 27 is much better. I am still not convinced a new school like Nord Anglia is going to be a very good school in the first couple of years. I toured the schools in Doha by this same company and I was really disappointed in them (even a little horrified). I have also heard the one run by them in Abu Dhabi is not so great either. They also dont have any schools in the UK which I find a little weird (although there might be a good reason for this). I am just not convinced that NA is going to be as great as the press it gets says. I do like however the way it embraces other languages and the mandarin, french, spanish language programs are long overdue in a city as international in Dubai. I will be interested to watch the school develop.

Londia, we had a few bad experiences with landlords here so we bought and have never looked back. We are so happy we did so, but we took our time only bought off an excellent developer with a good track record, and did a lot of research on the property we ended up buying. You have said you would be happy to keep the value consistent - that won't happen. Dubai is one of the most fluctuating property markets in the world. If you are risk adverse or feel like a drop in the value of your property is going to impact you dramatically then I would not buy here. My property has gone up in value, and gone down, but it does not really matter to me until the day I sell it. I am quite relaxed about it as the true value of my family living in a home we love and own is more important than any increase or decrease the market shows..... but I understand not everyone feels the same as I do. :) and also the relief of not ever having to deal with a landlord again is immense but again we had a couple of bad experiences!

I would be very reluctant to move her, if she's happy and doing well both socially [i'>and[/i'> academically than no I would keep her. Is it just the newer facilities and the non profit aspect that are better? What about traveling distance, traffic getting there, class sizes, starting time, parent involvement? If you can name the specific schools you might get someone with kids there that could help you further? <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 16/06/2014</em>

Oh wow, its weird that your experience was so different from ours. We have been twice since it opened. They have an amazing facility and fun, professional staff. The first time we went it was to go to a birthday party and it was amazing, we liked it so much we went back for an hour long jump and it was fabulous. We booked online like you would a movie, my friend said she booked a whole birthday party online without even speaking to anyone. I am so excited something like this has opened up, it beats arcade games, and places like sega republic hands down. Its a fun healthy activity kids can do together in the summer.

I could not care less about the thumbs up/down and I'm not collecting stars but I really do wonder the thumbs down on my OP. Was it perhaps the madam herself and her equally ignorant driver friends? I'm just glad the potentially serious accident was avoided but at the same time I wanted to bring up the unsafe driving of some people. Do people get a false sense of security when they drive massive cars? Do they think that they will escape uninjured and just mow down whatever cars that are in their way? That woman reminded me of Kathleen Turner in the film "Serial Mom" (just the behaviour, not the looks). It was the tone, the bizarre title of the thread - I think "chelsea tractor" used in reference to a 4x4 was last used in the 1980's - everyone here has 4x4's they are normal here. Why even call it a Chelsea Tractor? Also really the driving here is terrible but do you really think the lady in the car is reading this and going to change her ways? This happens to people all the time, every day here.

I think Dubai is different from most property markets, but if you look at a place like Arabain Ranches which has gone from having almost no schools in a 10km radius to having more than 5 schools open up right next to it - of course that means prices are going to go up irrespective of anything else in the market. Its a great place to live and with easier school access, and road access (Umm Sequim street is now so much better!) making the Ranches more desirable to live in than it was 3 years ago. This type of increase in property prices does not worry me at all. It makes sense and its just like any suburb in London or NY undergoing gentrification its bound to happen - make a suburb a nicer place to live and families will be attracted and prices will rise. What does worry me is DAMAC off the plan waving around Donald Trump like he's going to single handedly make anyone who buys a damac property a millionaire. I see ques for off plan properties and shake my head.

The framing shop next to Park and Shop on Al Wasel road really let me down, for my 2nd childs birth I had a custom modern art print made in Canada. I had it framed at that shop at Park and Shop and he ruined it by somehow getting moisture between the glass and the print. I was so disappointed, it was completely ruined and he still expected me to pay for the frame. I just walked out of the shop and left my ruined print there refusing to pay. Honestly he should have paid me to have it replaced! I now use Art House Dubai also on Al Wasel road for everything . In the last 3 years I have framed quite a bit and I am always impressed. They are the company most artists use to do their framing before Art Dubai. <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 22/05/2014</em>

I drive past this school every day, the new Kings too. I do understand how buildings go up so fast but I would be really surprised if Safa and Kings are finished completely before Sept 15. I think they will complete a small part and work on the rest of it. That would not put me off applying for one of those schools however, if your looking at the long term a few months of construction is not a major issue.

Don't know why people still use shop and ship at all. At least from the US, international shipping has become the norm so virtually all major websites will ship direct. The only reason to use it is if you are shipping specialty items. There are some specific companies that do handle international shipping for big retailers in the US. For example J Crew, and Nordstrom outsource their international shipping (Nordstrom and many other department stores use BoarderFree) - when you do this you pay in Dirhams, you also pay in advance taxes and shipping. This in theory sounds great, but they will charge you an unfavorable exchange rate and the taxes and shipping are also high. Another reason not to ship directly is J Crew, SAKs, Tory Burch often have 20% of days on their site when everything is 20% off, because you are shopping on JCrews International website you won't see that. You will only see the normal price, if you change the country you want to shop in you will see far more discounts. This happened to me just before Xmas I ordered a huge amount from Jcrew to be shipped directly to me, only to see that on their US website everything was 20% off. I was so upset! If you have the time and don't mind it going through Shop and Ship I always find it cheaper than shipping direct.

Oh goodness, firstly get him checked at the vets to verify his age - when you buy from pet shops here its not ever going to be a 4 month old puppy. My vet told me almost all the puppies sold in pet shops are under age or over age. Maybe he's only 2 months old - or maybe he's 6. either way its something you need to know - those documents are always falsified. Anyone that sells pets in pet shops should not be trusted to document their details correctly - are they really going to tell you that your frenchie was born 2months ago in a puppy mill??. Also have him checked for giardia - my vet also told me its rife in pet shop pets, they sometimes don't even bother to give the pets filtered and clean water. Next buy a crate and put him in it at night and put it next to your bed so you can comfort him at night. The crate needs to be small enough so he will not want to pee in it. Get him used to it and keep him there when you are out - for his safety really. Yes to the play pen, put him in it with the pads and let him go when he needs to, then you can slowly remove the gate and slowly reduce the pads until he's going where you need him to. Also be realistic - once the vet tells you his real age then you can figure out how long he can go between pees. A tiny puppy can't do that, an 8 month old puppy should be nearly there. good luck, poor wee pup needs lots of patience! <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 10/05/2014</em>

They have a lovely website and communication looks great, but its a bit strange they don't mention class sizes, start times, or even have a sort of temporary school calendar on the website. Kings, and Foremake have that information on their websites. Will find out tomorrow. Thanks again.

Thanks so much, I will call the school tomorrow but I would love to hear from anyone who knows about this school.

In my old house I had fake grass and I have 2 dogs, I hated it. It stinks, and for some reason I never felt it was really very clean. With no sprinklers to wash the pee away or dilute it you will find in summer your whole yard will smell like pee. Its awful. I used to have to wash it with detergent and water which was a total nightmare because my garden was pretty big. Also in Summer it used to be burning hot, you could not walk on it at all, I used to feel sorry for the dogs. I will say that this might not be the case with all fake grass types, maybe there is a method for cleaning it, maybe there is a new type which is for pets? You can buy grass in lots of places, Dragon Mart or through garden contractors and I think I saw it at the Garden Center. If your just renting I would use it from Dragon Mart.

It says in the rules that discussions of religion are not encouraged so maybe that saw it go. I'm sorry you are going through this. It may be that you have to rehome the dog for the sake of some harmony between you and your husband which is very important for your daughter. However, you do also need to address the marriage as a whole if he can change his mind like this. If he has let the dog down you must do your best for it. However beautiful it is it is not easy to home a desert dog mix - there are so many. Be honest with K9 friends - they may be upset and annoyed by the situation but you need to come clean. They may be full and unable to take her but if they can, write her a wonderful report and include pictures of her in your house and most particularly with your daughter. There are not so many dogs who are known to be good with children particularly such a young child so this is a big selling point for her and may ensure she doesn't stay long in the shelter. Obviously, if you can home her yourself and particularly to someone you know and trust even better. I worry that even if your husband lets you keep her now maybe when she gets old and a bit more expensive at the vet or something he will want her out and no chance to rehome her then. I agree with you but LMAO should not have to do it, her husband should be the one calling K9 and explaining why they are giving him back. I hope he feels ashamed.

Marquee at Arabian Ranches seems to do a nice job with girls. I've seen a few in there getting fussed over and know a few who have gone and their mums have been happy. I'm taking my eight year old daughter there for her next cut. I agree with Daza, a lady at Marquee in the Ranches cut my 4 year olds hair beautifully. I tried there once, the worst hair cut and color I have ever had. I had to spend over a thousand dirhams correcting the color he did. Never ever again.

I think it would be almost impossible to support a family on that amount in Dubai. Its so expensive here, I would imagine it would be quite a struggle to make ends meet, especially if you have to pay for schooling or nurseries. There are some schools that are cheaper but they are generally not UK, or US curriculum. You also need to check if your husbands company will provide medical insurance, its vital with kids and doctors here are so expensive. Good luck. <em>edited by Ilovechoos on 30/04/2014</em>

I am so sorry Joyce, I had a few years of trying for a baby and a few miscarriages so I can perhaps understand a small part of what she might be going through. Just to throw it out there, and I don't know your daughters medical history but if she's determined to be a mum maybe there are more options to explore, egg doner, sperm doner, surrogate, adoption. Maybe there could be some hope there, but I understand she must be grieving and there is only so much you can put your body through before you decide its enough. Sorry I am not really much help, just wanted to write a reply as I can understand her pain.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I know for sure DEWA do not accept part payments. Our DEWA got cutoff because our credit card expired and I forgot to pay it, my husband had taken my credit card on that particular day and went into the desert with our family that were staying. I was frantic as I was worried they would come back to no ac and no water. I had 2000Dhs in my wallet and the DEWA bill was 5000Dhs. They would not even consider accepting part payment to turn on the DEWA. I had to get my husband to come back and give me the card so I could get the money out to pay them. It was horrible so I can really imagine how your feeling. Secondly you will not go to jail for one bounced cheque! That is just scaremongering. Your landlord does not deserve to be paid. Don't pay him, send a polite message explaining the issue and that you will organize payment when you can. If they want to take it further hopefully you will have had enough time by then to get the money to pay the rent. Please look after you family first and then that awful landlord. Thirdly find out your new owners details and get this info through to them, its so important they know whats happening. Good luck, and honestly bounce that rent cheque and pay your DEWA bill. xx

Ok if she's wearing low cut tops, or tight fitting things and you have a good relationship I would say something along the lines of " Oh wow the girls/boobs/knockers/ are looking good tonight" or whatever you use to describe them. Just compliment her! She went through hours of surgery, saying something nice will always be good.

I am agree to holding him back! Look now for a nursery that will take kids up to FS2, Childrens Garden defiantly go up to that age and then just transfer him to a school when your ready.

Ok cheaper but pretty cool is J Crew. Their gift guide is full of great stuff, they do international shipping too so you can get it delivered to the UK. http://www.jcrew.com/gift-guide/Mens.jsp?intcmp=h1_giftguide_m

The Turkish One at Zabeel Saray on the Palm is excellent. Spectacular and really well done. I think its better than the one at O&O. http://www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/dubai/jumeirah-zabeel-saray/spa/talise-ottoman-spa/ Look at the pictures on the website. Its really remarkable.

I have tried to use Hamilton before, over summer they were doing a swim camp. I traveled across the city to do a trial with my kids and then despite emailing them time and time again they never told us which level they were or got back to us with availability. It was so frustrating and a big waste of time. Their teachers might be ok, but the support staff or admin staff were pretty useless. I won't bother with Hamilton again.
