We have been a fast food free home since july! I never ate any of it and now my children are convinced that its not healthy for them. I have stopped buying sausages and frankfurters too. We still like pizzas though, I am hoping that's still ok;)

What do you cook in pressure cookers? Surely just dishes with beef, yes? Cause chicken and fish are cooked in 10 min anyway! Would love to know. Irooni I cook Ghormeh Sabzi,, Ghemeh Bademjoon, Festenjoon and Abgoosht in my pressure cooker. In fact I use it for everything, it's like my best friend in the kitchen :) Really?? How long does abgoosht take? And ghormeh sabzi? Which brand do you use?

I will not sell mine or anything.we were just married and hubby was made redundant after 9/11 and we had no money other than the bit from unemployment. So i saved bit by bit and did odd jobs for peanuts until i had enough to buy it for him. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of where we were and how far we have come now:))

The MEHR or Mehrieh as us iranians call it, is very very common in Iran. Nowadays the bride and the family ask for extraordinate amounts. It is never set in money, always in number of gold coins. The norm these days is to ask for the number of coins to collerate to the bride's year of birth. So the younger you are the higher the number of coins! When I was getting married, and talking about all this, my father said he will not discuss before hand, he will announce it at the ceremony. Something has to be mentioned as the mehr it part of the verse that they pronounce you husband and wife with. The sentence goes something like, Miss X, daughter of Mr. XX, are willing to enter marriage with MR Y, son of MR. YY, with this set MEHR..... Do you give me the permission to wed you? my MIL was sweating bullets at my ceremony, thinking its going to be crazy as my sister in law her other daughter in law had asked for 1357 gold coins, which equates to 1,357,000 dollars today. i am also born in 1357 in the iranian calendar so they were expecting around the same. Then when the moment came, my father asked for 1 Quraan. The guests were shocked! Cause these days, something like this is unheard of. I will forever be grateful for his decsion, cause he didn't put a price on! I am no commodity to be priced! My father's philosophy was, if my marriage falls apart no amount of money can bring back my youth and lost years, and that I was fully capable of supporting myself if i ever divorced. You reqlly need to rethink this attitudeof the price system on a woman OP!

Some of my friends bathe their children with water only. Their philosopy is that if you soak in a tub once a day, you are clean enough, no need for shampoo or soap.

Oh man. I feel it coming now and it is a day too early. Oh dear CA! That is another pet peeve of mine. I thought hey only did that inthe films!!:) getting up from a tub of foamy water and just toweling off! When I moved to canada, i found out its quite normal.

Its not just me http://www.guardian.co.uk/notesandqueries/query/0,,-185700,00.html From another forum Posted 23 April 2004 - 02:20 AM I have been waiting for some time for someone to start this thread - not having the guts to do it myself, of course. Dishwashing in the UK has been my one and only bugbear since moving here over 11 years ago. In my opinion (and this is only an opinion) there are only two ways of washing dishes by hand; the right way and the potentially harmful way. The right way is naturally the way I learned when I was young; you turn on the tap, grab a soapy sponge or other implement such as a bottle filled with sudsy liquid with a brush on the top, rinse dish under FLOWING water, scrub away debris, then rinse dish under FLOWING water again. This seems to make sense as all of the potentially harmful things (eg; raw chicken juices, festering dairy products, and other bits of untasty ****) are jettisoned away in a stream of water and down the drain. During my time in the UK I have seen the above exercise in dish washing performed but, much to my horror, I have also seen the following: Fill unclean sink with water and put plug in. Watch as grease and other unnamed bits from the sink floats to the surface of the basin. Fill with washing up liquid until sudsy. Dip dish in sudsy sink water and rub with a sponge (or sometimes a greasy cloth! Yes, I have seen this and it almost makes me retch to remember it). Put dish on side with suds (and other crusts) still clinging to it. The above, mind you, is a very bad case of 'unwashed dish phenomenon'. You can usually recognise it because the next time a glass is handed to you its greasy and plates always retain a bit of what was eaten last from them. Being an historian, I have come to the conclusion that this indeed is a very old method of washing dishes that predates running water. Water was collected from the pump or standpipe in a bucket and brought into the scullery where dishes were done on site. It also predates common understanding of the workings of bacteria or food handling. As with many ancient and august institutions in the UK, this method of washing up dishes remains, regardless of advancements in the field (such as the additon of hot and cold running water which flows directly into the sink and the widely put about knowledge of what causes stomach upsets). My dear husband still lapses from time to time. Just yesterday I picked up a 'clean' mug where my lipstick still decorated the rim and a gentle stain of coffee was still apparent on the inside. I realise that I may have opened an a pandora's box here - but since the main objective behind this thread was to dispell cultural food rumours; not all dishes are washed this way in the UK. Some people are fortunate enough to have dishwashers. It was a camp ground yes! But there were FULL kitchen with HUGE double sinks and everything you would need to wash dishes properly! EVERY single person in all the locations I mentioned, did it this way, not one would rinse. Its not like there was a measely tap somewhere by the tree. So after seeing that, I don't think that its me really being judgemental and stereotyping, there has to be somehting there that make this a trend.

Not that I'm trying to attack the OP in any way, it's just that I can sympathize with her MIL on some level. My hubby is Pakistani and he insists on adding spices and herbs to EVERYTHING. While I love traditional Pakistani food, I also like (yes, I will say it) bland food every now and then. He loves cooking which I suppose is lucky for me... but all our food has be laced with spices of some sort (even spaghetti). I feel really terrible about complaining but sometimes I get annoyed. Once I even refused to eat a meal he prepared. I'd really like to have spaghetti with just the ordinary bland tomato sauce every once in a while. I am with you, i don't like origial recipes tampered with!

The dishes is definitely not just her, its a european thing. We took a motorhome across western Europe and i was shocked at how everyoe washed their dishes in the common ktchen in the camp grounds. I saw this in switzerland, germany, austria, france, italy.... And other europeans on holiday there do this. Put dirty dishes in soapy water in the sink, take it out and wipe with cloth.....ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww edited by Irooni on 26/09/2012
