Oh alismum, sometimes I feel like stopping them and saying " seriously! Is looking like you are at the oscars worth losing precious sleep time in the morning?" LoL. But in the five years I have been there, I never thought the I should keep up with the jones once. I always look like the boring old me. Luckily I have a few school mum friends who are just like me. We love our bare faces, hair tied back with our linen trousers and fit flops! ;)

Sibling priorities will still get places at the early years. Honestly, having read your previous posts, you may not like Repton at all. Some of the Mums look like they have live in make up artists and hairdressers, and this is a 7:20 in the morning! Then there is me who might as well wrap my blanket around me and wear my pillow as my posh hat!:))) The school sure has a good mix, but the number of the sort of families you don't want may be slightly higher at Repton.

I might end up in a school that is not my choice, one day. However, JESS and Repton, are the only Dubai schools I am comfortable with. If my children were in senior school, I would be crossing off Repton too. Many, Many families are very happy at DESS. I toured it twice, but it just isn my cuppa tea. I have heard horror stories about Regent and greenfield. Why don't you consider someof the American schools?

Horizon and safa, have good reviews in this forum. Not schools that I would personally pick, but many parents and children are happy there. I know of 2 parents who were very unhappy at horizon and have since moved. One of them is a poster here. She might be able to help further

Personally I think she looks awful. My ironing board has more curves. Not a healthy look at all. That makes to of us. I am always trying to shed the pounds and would kill to be slim. But I swear, I would happily stay this big than be a stick figure like her!

A proper library. This got me thinking, so I looked it up - anyone tried any of these libraries? http://www.dubaipubliclibrary.ae/About.htm I have been to two public libraries here. I went to inquire about the children's section, though, so I don't know anything about the adult section. I was told by the librarian that the library is suitable for children 6 years of age and older. They can read and use the Internet there but there are no programs for children like there are in many Western countries. Yes E, but the selection of the books is useless.

Cleaners don't get "decent" salaries anywhere. To hire absolutely anybody for anything back home (including maids, cleaners) the minimum legal wage is AUD$589/week (over aed8500/mth). Albeit, many skilled professionals dont get paid much more than people who mop floors there... Minimum wage is around half that in USA ( and even less in some states!)and about two thirds of that in UK. What Australians would make in those countries would probably feel like exploitation if they went there. What is reasonable or a decent amount to be paid for services rendered is completely relative even in the western world. But that is Australia! When I left Canada 6 years a, minimum wage was 1200 Canadian dollars!! So half of Canada was exploited by austrailian standards! You just cannot compare. Yes - the entire point in this post and the several before it is that you cannot compare. I have worked for 210 Bahraini Dinar for 2 years. But like most people in that industry (hospitality), as well as domestic help, you have your accomocation, meals, insurance, ticket home, clothing, toileteries etc all paid by the employer. When you add all of that up, a salary of 1200 aed for an unskilled profession is not bad and it's not exploitation. It becomes exploitation when you stop paying, stop paying for her food and all the above mentioned. We are talking unskilled jobs here. Cleaning. Cleaners don't get "decent" salaries anywhere. Plus, what is decent for them might be miserable for us. A labour worker builds a house back home and sends his kids to school with the salary he makes. Wealth is relative. How many of us here have built a house in their home country, fed his entire family and send their kids to school? And with entire family I mean the ENTIRE family. And, before you go shopping in H&M or another high street brand, check where it has been produced. Bangladesh? Vietnam? South America? Ever thought of the working conditions there? Child labour, no wages, no benefits, nothing. Praise to the voice of reason! Before you know it expatwoman.com posters will be negotiating 7000dhs salaries for maids. 2400 is low??? Come on! They build lives from scratch with 700dhs a month let alone the higher salaries. And to the poster who was asking would you be happy with that salary, yourself??? H*ll no!!! I worked my behind off in school and years of university (that I spent a fortune on and paid back loans with high intetrest rates!) and did years of volunteer work to gain experience. Plus i come froma completely different social standing! (and dont tell me that's discrimination. Its not. Communism is long gone) So no, 2400 or 5 times that is not enough for me. Irooni they call it Devils dung lol, apparently it's a species of 'Ferula' (fennel) native to Iran and Afghanistan. I bought some, it smells a bit like sweaty socks in the container, but I cooked with it and the smell went. Only cooked with it once mind you and like I was told 1/8th of a teaspoon. You can use it for vegetable or pulse type curries and it also has medicinal properties. In Farsi it's known as angozad. I read [i'>"Some people call it devil's sweat, while in some other countries it is known as devil's dung or devil's spice. Persians appreciate the smell of asafoetida, therefore it is stated as food or spice for gods." [/i'> I can't think of any Iranian foods that contain this spice though. ETA: Apparently it was used in old Persian recipes for meatballs, but not used nowadays in cooking, exported to India/Sri Lanka edited by Alismum on 19/05/2012 I have never seen it used in Persian recipes. Will try it though.

I bought it from union co op. The same one that alismum bought. If you are looking a remedy for your baby's gas problem, try mint water. All the Iranian shops in satwa have them. It really works wonders.

Oh dear! It's getting more confusing. Junior school: head of year for each year, head of key stage for each key stage, head of junior school. All under the headmaster of the whole school. Don't worry it is almost my bedtime too! What are the class sizes like? 16 in nursery, 18 In reception, 20 in years 1 and 2, 22 from there on. However my daughter in year 3, still has only 20 in her class.

How on earth does the Headmaster quality control? Each year group has a head of year, then head of key stage, head of juniors, headmaster. They have a headmaster for each senior year group? I don't know. But I am sure the senior school is much smaller.
