Hi there Sometimes I think homework was designed to torture parents. But in all seriousness, homework time was awful in our house. What I had not understood was the reason my child was falling behind (and the school kept making me feel awful about it and the future!) was that her cognitive skills were too low. These are supposed to be tools we use for learning and if they are weak, you are a poor learner and if they are razor sharp you love learning. In fact another mum on this forum was the one to point me to the Brain and Learning (04-4534170) for an assessment that told me what the root of the problem was. They do have a survey on their website for you to try before paying for an assessment. The assessment was 500 (this is over a year ago, but I think it is still the same) and we got the results in a couple of days. My child needed brain training to sharpen her tools (not all kids do). This has really helped with concentration and reading and now homework struggle is a thing of the past. Most importantly it has really boosted my girl's confidence and independence. I was encouraged by the school to pay for a shadow. But that would have just made the school's life easier and the problem would have been there. So my advice is at least try having the assessment and understand what is going on. And then make an informed choice. A lot of the suggestions below would not have helped my child who was already overwhelmed and whose resistance and tantrums were just the outward signs of her pain inside. I don't often post, but brain training really has changed her life and certainly mine. So much so I had my other child do it too. edited by Honey72 on 07/09/2013 This definately does help. My daughters all go for brain training every Saturday afternoon but they do have to follow through with a 10 minutes every day. The change in my children was tremendous. They finsih their home work in record time. Read something once and understand it with out having to go back to it. They are both A grade students and love the learning process now. I had put them in this system (learning the abacus) as it also gives focus and is brilliant for kids with ADHD.

I have been suffering from Hyperthyroid for 9 years now. Before that I was "hyper' which was a nightmare. Could not run more than a few steps as my heart would race so fast I thought I would explode and the hallucinations and feeling agitated all the time/fighting with everyone I loved......so when I became better after my first born and then tipped into hypo after my second child I thought weight gain and lethargy was a price I could live with. Now I see on this forum that there might be a way to actually live normally. The Brazil nuts helped a lot and now I will also start an iron supplement. Thank you ladies! To finish off my day, could anyone suggest what I can do the hair loss I have had. 9 years of this has left me with thinning hair/bald patches....HELP!

We live on the border f Shajah and Dubai (Al Tawuun Area) and I work in Deira. It take 7 minutes with easy traffic. In the mornings 7-7:30 it takes between 20-40 minutes. Its not so bad. If you want to live further in then I would suggest taking the Emirates road. I like Sharjah. Its not so hectic and unfriendly like Dubai. Though I dont know how a single person feels. I have my family in the same building :)

thanks, I suffer from this as well. my medication dose was incresed about 2 months ago but I still don't feel quite right! I'm having it checked again in about a month. but will definitely start with the Brazil nuts today! I know how you must feel. My dose just kept going up. I went to an ayurverdic doctor that also helped. I am now down to just 75 mgl 's and then I discovered the nuts...try also taking Supradyn (vit B complex) . This combination made such a difference. Tigerente: I bought them in Spinnys

my DD is having chicken pox having blisters all over her body and face and i didn't know it was that time of the year in school. does anyone know of a place to buy neem leaves in dubai.thanks in advance Oh poor baby. I know how that feels. I had it with my three daughters last year. Neem leaves can be found all over the city. They are the tree of choice as they withstand the hot weather. Take the leaves (about two bunches and if you have the seeds on the trees just add them too) and boil them in water till the water turns green. Then pour this (I would pour everything) into a tub and let her play in while. Try and see that she rolls about in it for about ten minutes. Then without rinsing her off pad her dry (use an old towel because this stains and getting the colour out is next to impossible. There is something in the leaves that speeds up the healing process. I also had it (as an adult ) and it was excruciating so my maid ground the leaves up used to apply a paste to me. Bless her I could not have survived without her. What also helped was to make a bed of these leaves and sleep on them. That atleast got me through the night. Good luck and if you have problems finding the leaves, let me know and I would be happy to harvest some for you :)

A lot of companies dont even post their jobs with head hunters anymore. Try going to the different business councils websites. They usually post jobs for their members. I got my part time PA's position through one of them. Google "Business Council uae" and you will get a list of most major BC's. In the meantime : SIG Combibloc Obeikan FZCO were looking for a PA for their CFO. send your c.v to sheena dot chacko at sig.biz Oh yes! Also try the consulates....Good Luck!

I was a victim to such a con. My first husband was so loving and kind and told me all the right things before we got married. Then he asked me to marry him...ofcourse I said yes, then came all the sob stories of wanting a clean slate when starting a new life etc etc need the money to pay debts etc etc. So I gave him all my savings. After all when one is married what is the harm. Then came the marriage ceremony ...I had to pay for everything, even his side of it. A week into our marriage he made me buy him a new car, gave up his job, took my jewelry away "for safe keeping" told me I could not meet any of my family or friends and had to just be his mothers lap dag. For 10 months I was harrassed by him for money, emotionally, in every way possible. He even told me he would take away any children we may have if I dont toe the line (nail in the coffin)...needless to say those were 10 months too many. Oh and yes, I found out he was a toy boy for a wealthy lady who he was still seeing. Anyway, what I learnt from this ordeal was not to let anyone know my strength or weakness or how much I earn/have in the bank. Its non of their concern and so what they dont know they cannot spend. BTW I am now married to a wonderful man for over 10 years. He is just as loving and kind as the day he asked me to marry him. He has handed me his bank account and I drive it. I am pampered everyday we are together (ya, and I have put on a lot of weight because of it). It took him a while but he has given me back my self esteem which the other guy robbed me of. The only thing he asks of is to feed him.....so I learnt to cook. And for the poster who got alarm bells due to the cons age. Dont let that be a reason not to find the right one.....my husband is 6 years younger than me

My Daughters are going to the School of creative sciences. It is an English/Arabic school which offers the British curriculum (also has an American branch) and teaches in both languages with emphasis on Classical Arabic. This school has many Expats as well as locals. After a lot of research I found that it has excellent academics (compared to other schools in Sharjah) and its known for its discipline. Both of which was important to me.

I live in Sharjah so go to one close to home. It cost me 1050 for a month for my whole family. The pool is actually quite nice. As far as I know all hotels offer daily, monthly and yearly rates. You just need to check about costs. Ofcourse 5 star hotels cost a packet. You can also try health clubs e.g. fitness first or even thttp://www.aquaswim.ae/ ....or http://www.timeoutdubai.com/sportandoutdoor/search/all-locations/all-venuetypes/all-goodfors/489-swimming Have fun!

Try tooth paste for mosquito bites - seems to work if nothing else available - actually was better than bite cream I bought! What also helps is to rub the inside of a banana peel over the bite. My 6 month old verified this when we used to live in a mosquito invested area :)

If you are having diarrhea then make sure you are having ORS (ORS-Oral Rehydration Salts), you can buy this in a pharmacy or even make it at home (in a liter of water put two tsp sugar and 1 tsp of salt) Basically your electrolytes diminish when you have diarrhea and that can cause cramping. Sip this water through out the day specially after a visit to the loo. Eat banana's (also rich in electrolytes and minerals) and if possible a table spoon of Psyllium seed husks also known as isabgol. It is the most natural remedy for diarrhea. Hope you feel better soon.

After my daughter I had mild melasma (or at least not as bad as some I have seen) Thank God! but a friend recommended a tea spoon of walnut powder, a teaspoon of coconut powder mixed in a teaspoon of yogurt (as my skin is rather dry. you can also mix it with water) put this on like a mask and let it dry. Once dry use it like a scrub while you rinse it off. It actually helped! and my skin looked fresh and was as my baby says "sooo softie" I used it everyday for a week and then "weaned" myself off. I still use if from time to time when I have had a lot of sun. edited by janatks on 31/07/2013

I am really sorry to hear about this. I know how you must feel. My husband's closed down five months after getting to Dubai. Apparently they hired him to window dress the company so they could get a better price when selling it. Once sold the buyer stripped the company of its assets (i.e. customers) and closed down. Anyway, time was of the issue so my husbands friend helped us with a freezone visa which enabled us to stay here until my husband got a job. If you know someone to assist that way or even set up your own freezone company. I believe its not too expensive (aprox 15000 AED)....

I know its chemicals but over the last year I have had so much stress and worry that I aged 10 years. This got depressed which just added to my pressure. I found this online and they offered a one month free trial so I took it. It is pricey at 180 US$ but you only need a dab ...so yes I am very pleased. Now I have to work on my weight.

Schengen visa's take a minimum of 21 days to be processed. no exception. Some countries even take longer it all depends where you apply and what your nationality is. This is because your application has to go through and be cleared by all Schengen state immigration authorities. Yes, it is a pain but in the end you can travel at will in any of the member countries. And yes, you need to get an appointment and right now the earliest is in AUG. The have a special service, you pay 275 AED but not sure for what because they cant go any faster..... That is *not* true at all. We got a schegen visa through sweden in less than a week. Hey, super news! congrats.... I was just giving information as taught to us while working for a Schengen Consulate....that was a year ago. So Ichecked and this is the info I was given: It may take between 3 days and 3 weeks to have a Schengen visa application processed. Much depends on the nationality.

I agree with Amy, and I think her reason is not being understood. What I think she means is that her family would have to "suck up" a bit with the husband and family to win some trust, calm things down and "normalize" the relationship. This will allow her to be able to speak to her family alone and start planning an "escape strategy". I don't think you need to look at it as a way to humiliate her or her family, but as way for her to get out. As long as they feel "disrespected" and they have her locked in she can't do anything else, it will only put her at risk of violence. It's merely a strategy for her to get out. What a frightening world some women have to inhabit. What is even more frightening is that her family might not want to help her out. In Pakistan many families (even educated ones) will no longer accept their daughter back once married. So AA is very right to tread carefully as it could open up a whole new bucket of worms.
