Sorry just realised I did mean $40 for 1000. Still seems quite steep to me though. I think i'll wait until she gets more miles and upgrade her next time. This said, emirates have upped all thier prices over night for the dates I need so looks like she'll be coming etihad now!! lol

Not had much dealing with skywards miles until the last 24 hours. I'm trying to organise my mum coming out, but it turns out her 21000 miles wont get her even a one way flight, and she can;t use them towards the cost of a flight. We can buy more miles but its 40USD for 100 miles so will cost as much as the flight would in the first place to get the right number of miles for the flight, and to transfer them to use, it would work out at 498 USD!!!!! That seems very steep!!! Just going to booke her flight then see if we can use it for an upgrade for her. Have skywards always been this much a of a con or have they recently changed it?? ETA I know that doesnt really help OP much!! Just my rant from her prompt. I also believe from looking at the website you can extend expiring miles, although I assume at some stupid cost!! edited by jc2010 on 05/07/2011

I had exactly the same problem. I had the dresses made at dream girls, purely because I couldn't find any dresses in the colour i liked in the style i wanted. Had to get every measurement under the sun for each bridesmaid all in the UK. Sent the dresses home and not one of them fitted. All pooorly constructed when they put them on and the measurements were way out when they actually measured the distances around the dress. Grancted, I maybe should have checked that before sending them, I just assumed they'd be fine. What was most annoying is that we still paid about £75 for them, then had to pay about £30 per dress to put right again!!! more annoyingly, my dad decided then to tell me a dress maker had opened about 6 months previous around the corner from his house (where 3 bridesmaids lived) and when they took the dresses to her, she reckoned she could have made them for less!! Grrrr!! It was so infuriating, I do feel your stress!! I remember I was gutted..and even on the day, I knew one wasn;t right still and I notice it on the pics (im sure no one else would). I'd suggest buying extra fabric and sending it home and getting them in to see a local dressmaker to fix them. That would be the cheapest option, leave it in their courts for now and see how it goes. One of ours had a whole panel changed. Hope that helps....that and deep breathes and a big glass of something strong!!

Haven't actually asked in the garages but we did find it a real mission to get an suv in our price range with isofix. As you said it surprised us how many people hadn't heard of it even!! We bought a jeep compass in the end but were looking at vw toureg too. Gmc did isofix in the terrain or something like that but yet Chevrolet in the same garage didn't do it in the captiva, the same size car. What was really stupid was Honda!! We walked in and looked at the crv, what you would expect to be the family car, didn't have it at any level apparently, however tge civic that had been sported up to it's eyeballs with spoilers and bucket seats lowered suspension, only 3 door that would generally attract a young lad etc did have it!!!!

we've just bought a brand new car and we we're shocked how few had isofix hooks. According to our antenatal classes garages will add these for you, but we just kept searching for a brand and model in our price range that had them already. It was my understanding that it was mandatory in new cars in the UK to have isofix!! another safety feature skipped over for the gulf...where we need it most!!!

You don't need residence visa to get passport but you need a visa in passport within 120days of baby being born. So passport application goes first then when you have that, ideally in goes the residence visa. Are you sure you can get the stamp at immigration?? Where is the immigration you would go to?!? That would be a perfect solution!! Thanks for the help edited by jc2010 on 19/06/2011

I had one 3 weeks ago, it involved 3 dentist visits one week after another at the Meadows Clinic. Was really happy with the dentist, didn't do any xrays as I'm pregnant and even though it was going througbh on insurance, it costs 2380 Dhs-ish and I paid 20% over the 3 weeks depending what had been done each week. Cost seemed reasonable to me for what was a very comfortable procedure with no pain during or after that I had been dreading!!!

I had slightly high prolactin levels (ideal level was 32 and I was 36), possibly backlash from a miscarriage 5 months prior. I was prescribed dostinex for 3 months to lower the levels, which it did no problem after about 2 months. From what i remember at the time, theres a few different potential causes for it so I guess it depends on what has caused it. Do some research on the internet, but it was very straight forward for me. HTH

I have to say, I can't speak highly enough of her. Everyone has their own opinion and i have read on here that some haven't got along with her. I had a miscarriage last January, at 6 weeks although my dr at the time (who I would never recommend) didn't do enough to follow up on it and so it wasn't discovered until I0 weeks after my first positive home test result, despite HCG not doubling 3 weeks after the test result. Anyway, you're asking about Dr Nirmala. Having been through the experience we had in January, and things not being quite right after the D & C given by the otehr Dr. My husband and I went to see Dr nirmala in the July time having still not conceived and having not gone back to normal periods. I based my decision on a single recommendation at the time on here. I just wanted to get checked over to see everything had been done right at the last Dr's and I hadn't been 'damaged' during the proceudre. The first appointment she spent well over half an hour listening to our concerns, doing scans and blood tests to see all was ok. Based on her tests, I had slightly high prolactin levels and the appearance of polycystic ovaries. She went through the info regarding this, and as we stood up to leave, having had a big intake of info, I still wasn;t 100% on everything she had told us so I asked her again about the polycistic ovaries and she sat us back down and went through it all again, regardless of being over our appointment time. Based o our last experience where we felt like we were on a conveyor belt, this was a breathe of fresh air. We have been wigh her every since. She treated the potenial problems we had and started us within a couple of months on Femara, to help us on our way as we were desperate to conceive again after a horrible experience and my family situation at the time. I am now 33 weeks along and have seen her throughout the pregnancy. She has kept a close eye on us (appointments every 2 weeks until 12 weeks, then every month after) which has shown she has understood our concerns which has made us feel so much happier about the pregnancy. She gave me her mobile number early on in case anything happens on a weekend and always follows up on calls made or with test results. I agree she doesn't talk much, but if you have any questions or concerns, she does listen and will offer guidance and reassurance. It is such a personal decision as to what/who works for you. She has been great for us, but understand she might not suit everyone. If you've seen her once already, you must already have a first impression?!? We knew from our first meeting she was the right dr for us. Sorry to go on, but hope it helps a bit?!?! Congratulations and good luck with whoever you choose!

I've been once, and I don't have children. It was however to meet friends for coffee who had children playing. I worked as a nursery techer and in my opinion the back door seems inappropriate. It seems to be used, as you say by people walking in and out to buy lunch, but they seem to have a painting station set up right alongside it. granted, the door has a high handle, but office workers with no children of their own in the place, and little concern for the children in their leave the door open, next to the unsupervised painting area. I saw this door left open maybe 3/4 times in an hour and half period. This is a massive safety issue brought about by the cafe being open to public. I wouldn't really understand why have a gate blocking the way to the front door but having this door open to all and at the open side to the play area. Can't really comment on people being in there without their own children as that is what I was doing and can see both sides to it, but the safety implications associated with it deperatly need addressing.

I think the book of photo's and drawings is a lovely idea, but i would probably supplement with a gift voucher, like MOE or soemthing, each parent can contribute whatever they want and the book will be very cheap to do but will be so precious. I'd get quotes of what the kids say about the teahcer too, and why they want to thank them, age appropriate of course and give each child a double page spread to contribute drawings and photos for.

we've bought, but not yet used, a mama's and papa's pliko pramette. Its umbrella handled so it folds down smaller in my opinion than the singl handled ones that can only collapse flat. It was important for me to have a lie flat option, which this one does and it does it by converting the regular push chair seat, and it does seem light weight, they advertise it at around 9kg i think, and a the m & p car seat clicks in it too. One critisism that I don;t know how it will affect us yet is you can't fold down with one hand I don't think. I know how you feel!!! Too much choice and not one seems to meet exactly what you want. We were inundated with advice and what everyone wanted from their stroller, that when you compile it all, it would have made for a super pushchair with a million different things, that just didn't exist. We had to decide from what we had been recommended what was most important for us, and what you are prepared to compremise on. We spent weeks looking and assessing the costs/features of each buggy before deciding what was going to work for us, and you never know, we could have got it totally wrong!! DH didn't like the ones you clip in and out of a frame so many mentioned here weren't an option for us. Good luck!!!

Dont know what days they get it in, its been there the last few tims I've been but not been for a while. They keep it opposite where the bread counter/baskets are in a fridge at the end of one of the aisles. I use the spinneys sandwich loaf too though and do find it the best one for the price in Dubai....and it doesn't turn to powdery cardboard when toasted!!

I'm in the same boat imolinar. First baby due in a couple of months and had/still have no clue how much of everything we'll need and use. I've ended up buying a lot just in case! We've bought newborn clothes, even though I could have a big baby that doesnt even fit in them. We've gone with legless short sleeve body suits and romper suits for in the day and long leg, sleeved sleep suits for night. we've bought socks, mittens, booties and hats just in case as for the price of them it didn't really matter to us if we didn;t use them, lesson learnt. We've just bought a moses basket and we were given a stand so thats what our baby will sleep in initially in our bedroom. not bought a cot yet, but will be buying the mesh type bumper that are not so attractive but a lot safer apparently. We've just finished ante natal classes and as part of that we've been advised to have baby in sleep suit, swaddled and then another blanket on top. We were told if baby is too hot, they will sweat and you;ll know and if they're too cold they won't settle so have layers. Even thought we're having a summer baby, it will still be inside a lot with the A/C which can get very nippy. Been told shouldn't use a pillow for babies either. baby bath is up to you, we've been given one, but you can also get wire framed stands of foam mats which would mean you could bath baby in a normal bath, so your preference again. Mobiles etc for crib, again at the classes they said you shouldnt use one until 6 weeks as its over stimulating for baby. Personal preference obviously but as a result, as we don;t know the *** of the baby, I'm going to wait and get one after the birth, before 6 weeks thats colour appropriate maybe, same with an activity mat. We've decided to go for a rocker rather than a swing, gaain, just what we've been used too, and personal preference. We've also been told to buy nipple shields as well, (avant ones were recommended) as a just in case, as if you do need them straight away, sending hubby out to try and get the right ones could end in disaster, would in our house anyway!!! We got a baby monitor from the UK, but i'd say its a definite must have. Will give peace of mind when you;re away from the babies room. We've bought Dummies/pacifiers, just one pack of 2 as again we don't know if baby will use them or not, if it does, we'll buy more! Stroller is a big decision and there are many types out there, same with car seat. We've also bought a base for our car seat to leave in the car as its part of a travel system so the car seat can sit ontop of the buggy. We've also got flannels, sponges and cotton balls, cotton buds etc for cleaning baby in the early days (top and tailing), and we've been told by the midwife only need water early on to clean, maybe in the event of lots of 'mess' a very mild soap. We've also got a top and tail bowl that came with the bath. I've also found a lot of good advise has come from friends who've had babies. They've helped a lot, but mostly it comes down to every individual. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for the next, I suppose thats why its such a big industry. But if you're anything like me, it has been very confusing figuring it all out. By the time we bought our stroller, I had a list as long as my arm of what various people recommended you 'NEED' to have on it, and that perfect stroller didn't exist!! Good luck with it all...

I had a D&C at the American January 2010 and it was covered by the insurance (SAICO). I did find the after care (check ups beyond the initial procedure) shocking though, and wasnt happy with what was done before the D & C too. So sorry that this is a possiblity for you. It makes for an extremely difficult time. I had 3 pregnant sisters at the time too, which didn't help, but I'm now due in July, so definitely a lot of hope afterwards.

I've had avrious issues with international calls both with etisalat and Du. I've only had my Du number less than a month and within 24 hours of it being activated I was getting calls from a +880 number. Bangladesh I believe, before I;d even given the number to friends and family. Phoned Du and had a go at them, as similarly its at stupid o'clock at night, they calimed innocense (I suggested they'd sold my number off already) and said there is nothing they can do to help. At this point I had probably had 8 calls in less than a week, then after speaking to Du they stopped until 2 days ago when I was awoken at 4 am then 2 missed calls in the day too. With etisalat, the number and frequency varied. the most recent and most annoying was a Saudi number who kept phoning for video call, and when I say kept calling, I mean 10 times back to back. I ran up 50 calls in 12 hours from them, one after another. he wouldn't speak any english to me, obviously I kept my camera covered (having clicked busy on it over and over) and threatened to report him to the police etc. Spoke to etisalat and similar attitude to Du, nothing they can do to clock a single number. Maybe the police can help you. A tthe time I was out and didn't have the non emergency police number so didn't call them, and they did stop (just when I was on the verge of tears with it) Let me know how you get on with the police so I know if it is worth while reporting them. Like you said, I dont imagine you'd get anywhere with them either. For me its another case of how things differ to home where they could bloke a nusense number from calling you!!! Grrr!!

but when was the last time you ate outside when it was that hot?? Generally everywhere would be in A/C, and freezing ;-) ! If I followed that rule, I'd live off salads as its warm all year round, but instead I cook all sorts regardless of the time of year!! same when I go to lunch in a mall, I really don't like the sandwiches here as I don't like mayo and it seems to be the thing to drown sandwiches in it, even when you ask for without, so I gave up eating them, hence i'm often left with hot options, and a bowl of homemade soup would often not go amiss.

Along the same ideas that have been mentioned but I wish there was a soup place over here. I make soup at home and the best ones are generally so easy, so tasty and so cheap!! If I had this choice in the food courts over here, it would be far easier choices for lunch. 5/6 home made soups made fresh everyday available. To start in somewhere like DIFC, I think you'd do very well, if you did them in polystyrene tall cups to take away and a small seating area inside. Quick and easy!!!

I live in the springs and will be delivering at City as I've been led to believe (both through my own experience and other recommendatiosn) that this is the best place to deliver and my doctor who I've been seeing for 12 months delivers there so I'm happy with that. I was initially very worried about the distance between my house and the hospital, especilly when my husband works in AD, but having been to ante natal classes now, I feel much better about the stages of labour and how long it will all likely take. Our doctor also delivered at Medcare but her non-commital but implied recommendation came to city. If your happy with your doctor, I'd stick with Medcare (i'm guessing you live closer to city??) or get researching on different docotrs. Our doctor is Dr nirmala, and she's just moved to Dr Suliman Al habib (Sp??) across the road from city. Again, not ideal from a traffic perspective for out last few appointments but having a doctor we were very happy with was more important, same with the delivery (Saying this, you can guarentee i'll go into labour about 7pm on a thursday night when theres been umpeen crashes on SZR and my husband has left work late lol) but we really like her, but i understand a couple of people on here didn't take to her. Its all personal experience and perspective.

My brother in law is looking at opening a bank account now his Visa has come through. He currently works free lance and so obtaining a salary certificate would be difficult. Is it possible to open a bank account, with a cheque book (as required for an apartment lease) and a small if not no minimum balance under these circumstances??? Thanks in advance

I looked over Dubai and there is a thread on here somewhere that lists people who make them here. She quoted 150Dhs i think and they had a rigid neck line. I've ended up ordering from peekabooboo from the UK which again wwas recommended on here so I'm just waiting for someone to bring it out with them now so can't comment on the neckline until i've seen it. ETA the one from the uk was about £13 with delivery, about half the price of the ones here, that why I went with them instead. edited by jc2010 on 29/04/2011

Both of ours have been plastic tarpaulin ones (the only ones i've been able to find to fit the table) and they were both over 100 Dhs and smaller than 8 seater, and like i said, near enough fell apart after 6 months but have had to buy another one otherwise ruined furniture.

Ace hardware...however after 9 months we are already on our second. Although its meant to be weather proof, it doesnt like the sun and it seems to make it brittle and fall apart, but its either that or let our furniture get trashed by the sun. They do different sizes for different combinations of furniture.

manubhadauria I'm so so sorry to hear about your m/c. My first ended the same way, with a d & c too and it was such a difficult time. I also had 2 sisters that were pregnant that were further on than me and my younger sister fell pregnant 2 months later. I was devastated by it all. As you know from previous conversations on here, it took me a year to concieve again but I did get there and with Dr Nirmala so have faith. Our little angels just weren't meant for this world. It wasn;t their time. It will take time to get over this and it is difficult. I still think about the one i lost and how things would be now if it hadn't ended that way, but each day gets easier. sending love and hugs xxxxx

A big name reasl estate agent is trying to convince us that we owe a 'small charge' for renewal of our contract. Our landlord mentioned this a month or so ago and we told him we shouldn't have to pay anoything to renew as the agent hasn't done anything for us to charge us for. We payed him his whack of money in commission when we moved in. The agent has then phoned today stating we owe a small fee (not sure how much this is yet as there were other issues he was trying to pull a fast one on that we went off on one about before thinking about the fee he had mentioned and so didnt go back to it). We just want to clarify that we are right in that ANY charges to renew should be paid by the landlord as its him that wishes to use the agent, him that wants the new contract writing up etc so whay should we pay anything??? If they insist and it becomes a sticking point, can we raise this with RERA???? Thanks

Hi, how are you?? I really like Dr nirmala and had great success with her. I am currently 17 weeks pregnant after 2 months of treatment. She put me on Femara just to help me along as I don't think there was really an obvious problem. We had struggles for 6 months after a m/c and she was very understanding of our urgency to get pregnant again. Pregnancy is going fine and I'm still seeing Dr Nirmala. I think because of my past, she see's me quite oftne, which is very reassuring for me and my husband (i've had a 6 week scan, 8 weeks scan, 12 week scan and 16 week scan last weekend). She has been fantastic through the pregnancy. Trry not to feel too confused and scared, I know its hard. I felt similar, but I found the Dr reassuring and would always answer any questions I had and at the time of treatment and since, she has always returned calls etc when I have silly little quieries so don;t be affraid of asking for her help with any questions or concerns. Just keep thinking of the treatment as a small stepping stone to getting your baby, but try and be realistic too. From what i remember with ay treatment they can only give a 25% chance of success, and with IVF its only 50% so try not pin all your hopes on the first attempt, which I know is really hard. That first pregnancy test was heart breaking as you just hope and hope with the extra help it would work. If there's anything more I can help with, please ask!!! All I would say is try and relax and take your mind off it, not that simple I know, it was on my mind every second of every day, but if you can give yourself some mental time away from it i'm sure it would help!!! Good luck and take care, and get taking your prenatal vitamins!!! Jen xxx
