Anyone adopted a child while staying in Dubai? We are desperate to adopt a child from our home country. The adoption agency requires a home study to be done. Could anyone help me with info on how they did this here? How long it took and cost? Thank you!! We've adopted 3 whilst here and one into Muscat . Youngest is now 17. Good luck and hope you are successful.

Hi There, Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Long story short, I have a company which I want to close down here. I'm not getting on with my agency/sponsor so they're not being particularly helpful. I would be terminating the agreement before the year is up. It's not a retail business or anything, just a professional license with 1 visa, and an exorbitantly expensive serviced office. Now I've already found I'll have to pay a 2 month penalty to cancel the lease agreement, but I've now been told I'll have to pay almost 10'000 dirhams to cancel the trade license. I'm a bit suspicious about the price, so trying to find out if anyone has any experience dissolving a small company, and if so what it cost, and how you'd go about doing it? Thanks, AS Did it this time last year with a small professional company. In a nutshell: - cancel all visas; and get confirming statement from Ministry of Labour; - then go and get same from Immigration; - close bank accounts; - get termination agreement drafted, signed by all partners and notarized - return to DED with all documents - cancel licence Seem to remember we paid several AED000 for all this and it involved a lot of running around.

Also consider Safa Community School out in Dubailand. It's a sister school and they still have places for next year in some year groups. Then you could live out in Sports City or Arabian Ranches perhaps.

My daughter has been let down by friends she was going to visit in Atlanta and, with only 3 weeks go to her planned trip of a lifetime, they can no longer offer her a place in their home and a trip to Florida. We wondered whether rather than cancelling she could go on a package tour once she arrives so at least she has some support and she can get to see some of things she dreamed of. Any recommendations gratefully accepted.

My daughter has done 2 courses with the organization, a CACHE level 3, and a Diploma in Pre-School care. They seemed very professional in their approach. Main issue as you say is cost and online definitely cheaper.

My son has both jaws with metal braces and an anterior bite inhibitor. Poor boy he can hardly speak! Total cost was just over AED11000 at training college and they do give a small discount if you pay up front. Length of time max 2 years we have been told.

Have you asked a vet here - they might be able to tell you?? I did it in the opposite direction, Dubai to Oman, in 1995 with 2 dogs, 1 cat and 3 small children, and still remember with a smile what a jolly time I had of it what with dog walking, a furious cat, and diapers to change on the way!!

Must admit I order most of my patterns on line. Magrudys and the craft shop in the Beach Centre on Beach road also may have some.

I've just bought a new one - OK mine is only 3-door as we are past the transporting masses of children stage - but with 5 years warranty and 2 years insurance it was a no-brainer. It's a lovely car, not posh, but it has everything you need - and the one big bonus that really sold me on it - the petrol gap is on the passenger side so you can drive merrily past all the queues at the filling station!!

I don't see why, as landlord asked you to leave, you should not receive full refund of deposit. I have argued this case successfully several times when dealing with landlords.

I agree, unless you agreed otherwise in her contract, it's a personal document and her responsibility to renew it and pay for it. I have a similar case with my maid and her driving licence: however, because she holds the licence for my benefit rather than her own, I will pay to renew it, but with my other company employees I wouldn't - other than drivers of course.

Both my legs were really awful and Dr Sobeh in DHCC operated on both (at the same time!) about 6 years ago and still no sign of any return of them just a few spider veins.

We have always used AXA. Our claims have been more for mobile phones being damaged / lost than anything, and once a pair of glasses where the lens got chipped. Very reasonable in price and gives you peace of mind.

You could consider a health insurance that just covers the 'big' expenses, inpatient treatment, etc rather than every single GP visit. I think RSA do cover that you can tailor to suit your needs.

With 4 children here, aged between 14 and 24, I have to say we've been there and done most of what I've been reading about in this post. I do think a balance between reasonable house rules and 'if we don't know where you are, we can't help you if you need it' is the only route. This is definitely not a good place to bring up teenagers. And am I my children's friend - no, I'm a caring parent - friendship can come later may be - when everyone's grown up and fully responsible for themselves!

I know it's been asked a 100 times before, but my boss is relocating after many years here and is looking for a good company to handle his move. Any recommendations please - think quality and efficiency is the essential item here rather than cost. Many thanks

My son is just finishing an IBCC at Deira Intl School. He is totally non-academic but for the first time in his life has enjoyed going to school and his confidence is 10-fold what it was, academically hopefully he will also come away with a BTec or 2 and may be an IBCC. DIS is part of the Al Futtaim Group and the work experience they offer to IBCC students is within this group of companies - so the choice is pretty extensive.

No haven't tried them but did consider them a year ago to train my daughter as a hair stylist. We visited and met with them and I was pretty impressed. In the end however we opted for a similar training institute down in Knowledge Village instead mainly because it was easier for us to get to and there were lots of other young people around that area, many of the her friends. We found the training there very thorough and she passed her NVQ with distinction and now has a job in a very good salon here in Dubai.

I find this whole situation totally bizarre and agree with the others that you are being played with and you need to send this person back to the agency immediately. Then re-think totally and do some groundwork so you are yourself better equipped to handle the replacement. A while back some kind soul posted a lot of information about all this. It was brilliant in that it covered just about all the issues between employer and maid that need addressing, preferably before your maid sets foot in your house. I saved this information for future reference, should my own maid who has been with me for 8 years ever leave. I can send it to you if you give me your email address.

I remember doing this with my elder daughter, in that we adopted her at age 4 years and she needed time to settle and of course learn English. She started a Jebel Ali Primary School a year late with no issues. The challenge came when 12 months later we moved to Muscat and the British School there insisted on her going into the 'correct' year!! So just be mindful that whilst you may find schools here accommodate you easily enough, it might not be the case if you move elsewhere.

Whilst I am a subscriber to gardens, nature, and the great outdoors, if you don't have a lot of garden space, seriously think about just paving the area and putting in a patio for BBQs and plants in pots rather than grass and save yourself the hassle of employing gardeners/mowing lawns etc. We have an enormous garden with lots of lawn but in this climate and with the quality of gardeners available here, it's a headache to maintain and keep watered.

I and my daughters go to Dr Ekatarina at Infinity Clinic on Jumeirah Beach Road and she is mature and lovely to deal with. She will however refer you to Allied Diagnostic for mammogram. I too had a lump which turned out to be harmless - so stay cool.

Me too - not recently thank goodness - but have moved a family of 4 children on many occasions. Go with the lists and above all try to involve your children in the move if they are old enough. Mine were always worried that their things would get lost so I used to let them help pack and of course each had a bag with their favourites with them that they were responsible for. Sell in to them the advantages of the new destination and all will be fine.

I have answered my own question, so for anyone who needs to know: The person who has exited (first party) needs to give a Power of Attorney to the person who will sell the car (second party). The POA should detail full names, passport numbers, etc of both parties. Once issued it needs to be stamped by the UAE embassy in the country the first party is in, and by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the same country. It then needs to be sent here to the second party to use when selling the vehicle. Much simpler of course, but not always possible, is for both parties to go to the RTA with their passports and arrange a POA before the party exits the country.

Hi I have lots of desert roses both in pots and in the garden. I spray mine with a mixture of water in which I have steeped lots of crushed garlic and I add a few drops of washing up liquid. Usually kills most things. Fjcruiser is right though, you can cut it back and usually it will grow again. Just steer clear of the sap that comes from them as it is an irrritant

Has anyone developed a comprehensive list of all the things one needs to do before leaving Dubai that they would be willing to share? For example, cancel lease on villa; sell car/furniture; cancel utilities; etc, etc.

You could even try Northern Cyprus which is greener and less expensive. We hired a car just across the border between south and north and stayed in a villa in Karmi up in the mountains and it was glorious. It will be spring time and quite cool in April. Ownersdirect is another good site for holiday rental.

We went in November a couple of years back and it was memorable. No yellow fever vaccination required. Mosquito situation OK but always wear repellent even with tablets. Definitely get your visa before you go. Seem to remember I downloaded forms from Kenyan Embassy website, filled in and submitted in person.

My daugher now 22 always bit her nails. When she was little we tried everything then one evening when she was about 7 we were at a talk by an educational psychologist and I asked him what we should do. He advised us to save our ammunition for bigger issues and let it be. She can plainly see how much she's damaged her nails over the years, but carried on until recently when she became a primary school teacher and very aware that she is a role model and now she's just about stopped. Think it's a bit like losing weight and lots of other things in life, the wish to change has to come from within the person themselves, even with children. I like the idea of keeping small hands busy doing other things though and perhaps this will be successful.
