A normal Doctor's visit can be 400 dirhams and there may be cheaper. Maybe you need to have a look at other Doctors if fees are that high especially if you may be paying for the visit yourself and not on insurance. Morning... anyone know if i can buy Zolft over the counter rather than fork out 650 for another consultation this week? TIA Mich x x

If that is the case there must be an awful lot of psychiatrists working a very full week in Dubai but do not believe that to be the case. Many Doctors , specialists , can prescribe if it is very evident this medication may be required. If they are unsure they would refer you elsewhere . For most anti depressants you need to have a psychiatrist to write the prescription. Some doctors do but the majority won't

I would buy something that could be used and that will last for many years to come even when he is grown up. Book ends referred to sound a great idea, Good quality wooden box for storing toys or other things large or smaller depending on your budget. Camels referred to is another good idea. Silver frame with a good Photo of him at his Christening. A child 's Catholic Bible or Bible Stories, his parents can read the stories to him. There is a fantastic book shop in Dubai Mall, 2nd floor above Burj ticket desk that has thousands of books. Good Luck And what to buy for a British Catholic. I'm really quite clueless. The only thing I can think about are those silver spoons where you engrave birth date etc. Please help, DH has given me this task and he's not much help.

You need to speak to the owner of medi centre. He has a number of clinics Sorry I don't have much access to EW during the day. My original doctor called today and they definatley can't help. They will no longer write any UK prescriptions. Medi Centre also were difficult. The Doctor won't write a UK prescription for my drugs as she would prefer to prescribe a UAE alternative which could lead to side affects. I've been on the UK drug for 5 years and have no side affects. My sister (a UK nurse), is going to speak to my NHS doc in the UK to see if she will issue a 3rd repeat without seeing me. (UK doc only usually does 2 prescriptions/6 months supply before she requires a face-to-face catch up and BP check). It only works out to be one month supply I need before I'm back in the UK for the summer and will be able to see UK doc.

You may be putting too many clothes together in the washing machine and may not be using enough good quality washing powder. Hand wash it and let it soak in washing powder for a few hours if you do not want to use it in the machine by itself.

This is why I gave the O P phone number of a practice in Dubai that should be able to assist. Maybe she spoke to the wrong doctor. Can the medication be purchased in another Country in the middle east ? Because Dr's need to be associated with a UK practice for control and regulations of drugs being handed out. It's not enough just to be a UK Dr, you need to have a link to a practice, this is for patient safety not to be difficult. You will need to ask your Dr here if he can speak to your Dr in the UK (maybe your insurance provider based one) and refer the perscription to them to write.

I think fitness trainers can be very harmful as they can push clients too hard and many people have injuries from being pushed to do some things when it may not be suitable for them. I don't know what regulations are required but think it may be a good thing as otherwise too many cowboys give training and people have no comeback. I don't know anything about small business start up costs. I think it's a good thing. I second what MB said. It's positive for everyone: protects the consumer, ensures fair competition and promotes a regulated industry with minimum standards and rules to follow. The government has a big drive towards health and fitness but they need to regain some control over what is happening to ensure that safe practices are put in place. Maxy if your PT is really good, tell her/him to get in touch with one of the registered company who may be interested in hiring good staff. I disagree. It is not positive for everyone - the costs to entry are prohibitive for a small business like personal training. It is not as if someone can go and register a license for a few hundred dollars - we are talking thousands of dollars to get a visa and permit here. It is not such a harmful industry that "safe practices" need to be put in place. The government are stifling small businesses and trying to impose control where it is not required. Moreover, cracking down on personal trainers is a waste of government time and energy. This will only serve to drive PT costs up and therefore, health expenses in a country where one in five people is diabetic. edited by guinness on 01/05/2011

Don't overreact, things unfortunately do take time and maybe your under pressure as it is very important and more difficult for you presently. Medi centre may be in a different situation and may be able to help, which is why I gave you the information. Good Luck. I've just called them, the receptionist is getting the doctor to call me in the morning. I'm so annoyed with my surgery, its taken them two days to tell me they can't write it. I don't know if they are telling the truth, or just trying to hide that they haven't got a British doctor, as they are very popular among British residents.

If you are under pressure I would try and get an appointment to see him or speak with him if he has no appointments and he may be able to help you out. The PA is Western (from Ireland) & usually the surgery is great. They have a UK doctor, but believe no UK preson outside of the UAE can write prescriptions. I'll call Medi Centre to see if they say the same thing. Thanks

Try Medi centre the owner if from Uk. 04 360 8866 You will probably need to speak to a Uk person who can fully understand your situation. He has a number of clinics in Dubai. I'm sorry if this has been discussed recently, but I was struggling with the search function. I take a drug that is not licensed here, it's not illegal, you just can't get it here. For 5 years my UAE surgery has wrote prescriptions for me, and i've drawn them in the UK and paid private prescription prices for them. My usual doctor has left the surgery, and so i've asked to see another doctor that is UK registered as my husband is flying this week and can bring the drugs back. The surgery have told me that they have one UK doctor, but the laws have changed recently and no UK doctor in the UAE is able to write UK prescriptions anymore. The doctor hasn't told me this, only her PA. I'm struggling to understand that this is true, has anyone else experienced this. I've taken the drug a long time for a pre-existing condition, and am likely to need to take it for the foreseeable future. If I can't get the drug it may cause some problems.

Do not leave any fruit out and wash all fruit when you get home and bananas also as soon as you get home . Cover all food with netting or T towels. It may take a few days to get rid of them if they are in the house but do persist and you can get them under control.Do not keep any food in your dust bin longer than the day. Fruit and veg peelings put in bin outside or in compost heap. Good Luck. edited by jewelsmiddle on 01/05/2011

Unfortunately for one family to have 9 children and struggle to afford them in todays world is not wise , yet I know pro creation may be part of the religion and culture and contraception may not be allowed for them as i understand for some religions is the case. The modern world has lost how to be happy and content with little and have lost the art of sharing and caring naturally. We all could learn alot from this family. This is why I collect donated goods for them. One family has 9 kids and we pretty much clothe the kids. What I love is that they think they are the richest people on earth and are very generous in what they give and pass on to other families in a similar situation. edited by jewelsmiddle on 30/04/2011

Yes it must be very tough, I remember when I was younger and living in Europe I had not spare money for clothes , shoes they had to last a few years and life needed to be simple to live within my means. I work with a group of families who earn between 5 and 10 thousand per month. At that rate accomodation is not provided. They are men who were promoted out of the labour camp to enable them to bring their wives and children here to live with them. They do it very tough.

At 60k a year, can anyone really afford to pay for a car on their own ? Maybe in some parts of U A E but think living in Dubai it would be very very difficult. I understood it to mean 60K a year as most people would not earn such a high salary living in U A E. People need to live within their means. 60K per month or per year? no i have just re-read it its annual, well that makes it better edited by busybee2 on 30/04/2011 yes it says annual salary of 60k. but as mentioned elsewhere the fact that you have to rent and pay for 1 year in advance or get a loan for a car, at quite high rates it doesnt help with the budgeting, also the fact that if you bounce a cheque you end up in jail etc.

To be honest , I don't know enough about survival if one is earning only 60K a year ( I assume they get not other allowances). If landlord is wanting rent up front, shared accomodation may be what one needs to do and know of people who do that. I agree the problem is compounded and people may have to go to employers for loans instead. It's all very well saying 'people need to live within their means' er but how are you supposed to pay rent when LL's demand it all up front - no where else in the world does this happen, you pay monthly so you can budget. It's things like that, which have compounded the problem. So many people were forced to take out loans, just to pay this - it's ridiculous. edited by Chocs01 on 30/04/2011

This had not been a world wide system for many companies. You are young enough to have been in college when changes had started and recycling had restarted in the western world. Large companies in the western world were not big into recycling in the early nineties as they would have lost alot of money if they did they preferred to sell a new item which cost more for the customer hence more profit. The main reason recycling has become a big issue is because groups applied pressure on Governments and companies world wide. In the South West from about 1995 - places like PC World always did it and the smaller computer stores - no issues at all.

Crocs , shoes like these spread feet. I would be careful about what I put on such a young child's feet and will suffer when older if not careful. Many adults feet spread here in Dubai as they use flip flop styles and sandel with no support and affects there walking ( gait) .

It depends on how long you have been living in your villa . Im in a slightly different situation and would like to know if anyone has faced a similar dilemma. Our landlord is selling the property and the new owners have told us that they want to move in. Our rent is valid till September and the new landlord wants to move in once our contract is over. We are very happy in our current villa and prefer not to move. Does anyone know if the 12 month notice applies in our situation too? yes they have to give you 12 months notice to leave at the end of your contract date. if a property is sold with tenants then the new owners have to abide by the contract etc.

Hate is a very strong word and not justified. Why do you use it over something like this ? I would hope you are very annoyed with yourself but grateful someone told you there was an issue. If there is ever a next time and hopefully not , go into carrefour and buy a pashmina and put it around your waist or something similar. We all have embarrassing moments in our lives, at least someone helped you. Was at Deira CC this afternoon. Went with hubby to the movies. Wore a modest pencil dress that covered my shoulder and fell to well below the knee. Had a split in the back.... that managed to split further when I sat down, however me being me, I didn't notice until we were walking out in the middle of the mall, and a woman comes running up to me and tells me that my split is too long, and people have seen. Cue hubby racing a rather upset me into MNG where the staff were lovely and gave me some pins to pin it. Rushed out of the mall as quickly as possible, feeling totally humiliated! I have got used to the staring, and the pointing, and the difficult dress rules, but couldn't help but feel (unfairly) resentful and hateful that she said anything, and that back home in Oz no-one would have. Sigh.... Am I a terrible person?

Might be a good idea to give the figure in Dirhams also so people understand how much it is. Its not at all dirt cheap. The salaries the girls are paid are though. Compared to what I would pay at home (and friends in other countries pay) its on a par. My friend in Australia pays $49 for her mani/pedi and no extra for quick dry! edited by Pomegranate on 27/04/2011 edited by Pomegranate on 27/04/2011

Why are people always comparing to London prices. You are living in the Middle East and these people are paid alot less than those same staff in London. It is not comparable. But if you have a big salary and large benefits and not everyone does living in Dubai. Maybe keep the info to yourself rather than winding people up who could not afford high sums like you have been and appear are able to pay out. I am sure you could tip even better. Dubai is a very expensive place to live.

Jokay, misplaced priorities. Not all parents are like this buying love but unfortunately many people view one better by what you have rather than what type of person you are and how good you are and how hard you work to raise nice good children. Keeping up with the Joneses has always been a problem . Then why are these families buying that new car, new phone, bigger place, gadgetslove.akes no sence. Im sure people wont see what i see and its sad that they have to be forced to work in a different land to support their own. I just think some mothers buy their children's love.

He sounds odd, how do people communicate with him ? Does he have a wife/girlfriend you can contact or through his children to get him to call you urgently? People react differently to situations, some are proactive others stick their head in the sand.I am not one for panic , do your best and hoping things do not turn out badly but you have tried more than many would. Have you spoken to your brother? Perhaps he has her address or addresses to members of her family that could be given to the police He doesn't answer his phone for weeks on end.......very frustrating at the best of times

Thankfully the OP is doing what she can, would be nice if more people were like that, and a better world we all would be living in. Seriously? you say that she dated your brother 4 years ago and that she has contacted HIS family members (that she has never met) for HELP? Perhpas she is trying to manipulate your brother into talking to her? Perhaps it's absoloutely nothing more than emotional black mail..... Seriously, who would contact an ex's sister if they were seriuosly going to commit suicide? edited by jewelsmiddle on 27/04/2011

You don't give up Busybee2 even when you may be in the wrong ! Tells alot about you. The OP , Guinness is in Dubai and talking about a certain part of Dubai so you are not right to tell people more than one person its rubbish as posters were discussing Dubai and small change. Just admit, your too aggressive and maybe best as you don't live in Dubai, some threads you cannot contribute to as you live in Abu Dhabi and do not have current day to day knowledge and experience of Dubai which is what people are referring to. The same applies to those living in Dubai are not as equipped on day to day knowledge of Abu Dhabi . If the question is more general for the U A E asking advice then that is different as you may have better knowledge. Good night ! Busybee, your some what aggressive. You may have seen many of these coins in Abu Dhabi but this thread is on the Dubai, northern emirates site and I understand most posters are living in Dubai. Where are you living ?. Maybe you could phrase it less aggressively. How can you write rubbish when most of us living here for quite a few years have not been given any. it is not rubbish ! You'll only find 25 and 50 fil coins, you won't see anything less than that. It's been like that for years, don't expect it to change anytime soon. rubbish you do see all the types of coins, the brown 5 and 10 fils and then the silver ones 1, 50 and 25 fils. i have loads in my purse, but some shops do not accept them, so they do not give them out like car4 but the likes of spinneys and coop always give out the right amount it is rubbish i have lived here years but in abu dhabi and have always seen them, perhaps its a dubai thing thats the shortage there not down in the capital. nope i am in abu dhabi as i said, yes i do realise that this is the dubai thread i do post on the abu dhabi forum but the coins are universal for all of the united arab emirates!

Guinness, did you not read the recent threads on change. Forget the law. Just politely and firmly ask for your change and they will give it to you , they may need to give you 25 fils , so be it. Actually, it was fifteen. At the Choithrams in the Meadows. I purchased something that came to 30 dh and 95 fils. So they took my 31 dirhams and didn't offer any change. Fine, I just overlooked it. But then, DS came up with something he just [b'>had[/b'> to have. And that cost 5 dh and 15 fils. And the cashier waited and waited and waited until I dug in my purse and came up with a 25 dh piece. So I asked her for change, and she said "we don't have small fils, maaa'aam," or something to that effect. At this point, DD was howling so I let it go, but I was really annoyed. Isn't there a new law about stores required to give change?
