Thanks nath. Things have settled down and all 4 are crashed out in the house. The cats are still shut away, we'll try to introduce them tomorrow. I'll email friends of animals.

We're just back from the vet's and unfortunately he's not been chipped. He's great with other dogs, wonderful with people (including children), walks well on the lead, a happy chap. He'll need to be house trained and learn basic commands - doesn't seem to have come from an English speaking home. He's very well mannered with other dogs, had the sense to submit to the leader of our pack. He could do with someone to play with though and our's are rather old to join in for long!

Hi, I've tried K9friends but unfortunately they're closed until Monday. We've just taken him to the vet to be chip checked but unfortunately he hasn't been chipped.

Sorry kissymac, I just meant that there seemed to be increased numbers of security guards where in the past there were police officers. So sorry this happened to your daughter and others, it's always a horrible feeling even if you couldn't have done anything.

I think you will find that the Police had more pressing issues to deal with, the exceptional weather conditions caused major road flooding problems which became a higher priority. Thanks Dally, I'm well aware that there were other pressing issues but the only police we saw all day were the ones at the bag scanners. There are usually some walking round the pitches. There did seem to be more security guards than previous years.

As we left last night my husband said he couldn't remember a year with less of a police presence! Security are useless, as evidenced by the large number of non family groups sitting drinking in the family stand.

Thanks, we're working on that. I think this is the 14th dog we've found in Dubai over the years! I wish every dog owner would put a collar with their contact details on it which the dogs wear 24/7, would make reuniting so much easier! We're meant to be out at the rugby too!

Quick update: He's great with people, very docile. He'd like to be friends with our dogs but they're all 13, one has cataracts and another is deaf so they don't know what to make of him. Very good on the lead. He is also a cat chaser - we didn't deliberately put them together but the accidental meeting didn't go we'll. He either isn't house trained, possibly used to living outside, or he's marking as we have other dogs. He doesn't look like he's been on the street but he's not been neutered so unlikely he's been chipped. edited by JHM on 01/12/2012

Usborne publish a great set of books that begin with Usborne Very First Reading. They are designed to be read with an adult, you read one page and the child reads one page (eg I am Pat). They get more difficult before moving on to the next level. The graphics are great too, being Usborne! My 5 year old really likes them. You can buy them from Bookworm.

Yet another Dr Madhu fan. I went needing a crown on an impacted temporary filling and a root canal. He advised me not to have the more expensive crown as he thinks the tooth will move and the crown would need to be replaced. He did the root canal but the tooth stayed sensitive, I went back and he widened the canals, another hour, no charge. The tooth didn't settle down totally, completely not his fault it should have been treated years ago. Went back and he diagnosed a crack to the tooth that must have happened 20 years ago and has been seen by at least 4 dentists over the years! Another hour in the chair and again, no charge. I've taken both my children to him. The 9 year old had been told she needed braces but he said there's no point until other teeth had come through as the affected teeth would move. First dentist here I've had confidence in that they would only do what was needed.

We used to have a rescue cat who would attack without provocation. If you had your arm on the arm of a chair he would leap up and hold on with teeth and claws; he also shredded the furniture. What finally fixed him was the introduction of a kitten I found on the street. Suddenly when he went to attack a person she would think it was a game and attack him. He learnt pretty quickly that being bitten hurt and stopped attacking people. He'd been played with before she arrived but she was more interactive.

They've got Linda McCartney mince in Park n Shop. My husband got Quorn mince in Choithrams on Beach Road the other day. It's not cheap and when I came to use it every bag had been deliberately punctured. I know they do it to cram more in the freezer but it compromises the packet and product. I offered to go in to enlighten them but he thinks it better if he goes! ;)

I know it's not a cheap option but there is a school bus that goes to Mirdif and I know there are children who only use the bus service to get home. Sorry, can't help with a driver.

Yes! I'd been looking for months and found some yesterday in Choithrams at Safa Park. They had coconut powder too but I needed the coarser stuff so ended up paying Dhs25 for a 250g bag of organic desiccated coconut. I was horrified by the price but happy I'd found some at last! I then went to Park n Shop and they had 200g bags of organic desiccated coconut for Dhs7 per bag!! Sorry, you don't really need to know the bit about Choithrams but I was so cheesed off!

The school does start at 7:45 but you don't have to pay to park till 8. You don't need to register, just have to have enough credit! Parking on the other side of the road is so much faster for getting away.

Payment starts at 08:00 so unless he is held up he should be ok. To pay by text; reg plate number including letter (eg A12345) meter number (eg 318A) number of hours (eg 1). So it would look like A12345 318A 1 Send that to 7275 and you'll get a text back confirming it has worked. Towards the end of your time you'll get a text asking if you want to renew. I can't remember what the number is for the area round school. There's also parking at the back and in a car park behind the school.

Welcome to DESS! You don't have to pay for metered parking between 1 and 4 so you should be ok Sunday to Wednesday. It's not worth the risk on Thursdays, there's often a warden around as all 3 schools finish at around the same time. You can pay by text, really useful if you get held up in school in the morning!

They used to be red Start rite Eliza shoes but the only ones Stitches now have are a German brand. Call the school in the morning to check but it looks like they're ok as long as they're red.

I know that DESS used to be very specific about the style of shoe but last year there were a few different styles around. Check with the school but you should be ok as long as the shoes are red. Try Pablosky, they have coloured shoes.

That's awful Moonbug, how scary. I wouldn't have been impressed by the security guard, it doesn't matter whether it was kids or not! We've got 3 geriatric dogs but I hope they would be a deterrent! Maybe put up a beware of the dog sign, to put people off.

Chicken pox is far more dangerous in adults than it is in children. If they do get spots, get them to see a doctor within the first 48 hours to be prescribed Zovirax. My 5 year old had a pretty nasty dose of chicken pox last month but was put on Zovirax. She'd started to get them in her mouth and ears and was covered but the Zovirax seemed to slow it down and she felt a lot better. Bathing in Pinetarsol helps too. The Zovirax dose is by weight so they shouldn't just buy it over the counter.

It's Eid so the UAE embassy will be closed until at least tomorrow and probably Wednesday. Not sure if it's possible to change your ticket to a return but you would save money in the long run if your return tickets start in Ireland. We pay far more for a return from Dubai to Europe than folk pay for returns from Europe to Dubai!

I've got a small Sony Xperia which is ok. It's fine for Facebook but I'm thinking of upgrading to a phone with a larger screen - I think most of the new ones have. I have an Etisalat wasl package and pay under Dhs 150 a month for the data package. I put credit on to cover it when I get the email reminder. Easy to set up but if it doesn't work, call Etisalat and get them to make sure they send the set up for the right make of phone!

Events and markets are held at the Bastikiya but not daily, or even weekly. There's a small stretch of renovated souk by the abra stations on Bur Dubai side and the Gold and Spice souks on Deira side. Al Arsah Souk (the Heritage Souk) in Sharjah is closer to how souks used to be, with the twisting alleyways and small shops. The heritage area has been renovated over the years but is good for visitors, as are the museums - Sharjah Art Museum and the Islamic Museum. If you want to stick to Dubai, park near HSBC or Shindagha Carrefour and walk along the creek, through the souk there and then take an abra over to Deira side and walk in towards the spice and gold souks, that's about as authentic as it gets!

He's pretty bad but the guy doing the rowing was worse. Had no idea what was going on, who anyone was, how the events worked or even the name of where the event was being held! He never twigged from start to finish that the lanes the crews are in relate to the result of the previous race. Seems a bit odd as the commentators for the swimming and gymnastics had more of a clue!

Great performances, not least the rowers and cyclists! GB had crews in 13 of the 14 events in the Olympic regatta, made the A final in all events and won 10 medals! GB cyclists have won all but 1 of the medals so far in the velodrome!

Thank you BellaUK. The KLM price isn't as low and the connection time is 6 hours but I've flown through Schipol and would prefer it. Thank you all so much for replying, I'm going to head back to Dubai Mall tomorrow. I'm never going to be a great runner but it would be good to go somewhere to have shoes properly fitted. Thanks all for your comments. Don't know whether to book it or not. We rarely travel and last summer we managed to get a good price on Emirates so that's what my children think is the standard for airlines - they love the excuse to sit in front of a screen for 7 hours!

Be prepared for your luggage to not make the connection, even if you do. I'd pack a change of clothes each in hand luggage. That's what I'm afraid of and why I always try to take 2 flights rather than a connection! I always split the packing too so we all have clothes in each bag.

I would suggest avoiding spending too much time waiting around between your flights as there is absolutely nothing to do at CDG, the facilities are very poor. I've had to endure 5, 6, 8 and 10 hours between flights there and it's just the worst airport I think I've been to in terms of size - facility ratio. Good Luck whichever you choose. So true! I remember being excited by a CDG stopover as I presumed I could find some good french cuisine in the airport and it was terrible. A shocking capital / international airport really. Marmite sandwiches it is then! I'm vegetarian so struggle in France at the best of times! At least we're not having to change airports, I'd rather have stayed here. I'd heard CDG was bad but it's at least 4,000 cheaper than flying through the UK.

Thanks for the warning!
