Ladies, I'm looking for a couple of nice paintings for the house. Something original would be preferable, but within a reasonable price range. Any suggestions for places to check out in Al Quoz or elsewhere, which have a good selection/variety? TIA

Sorry, I can't help with your question re when to start looking, Spicy pepper, but I may have something available for rent in early/mid December. If you send me an e-mail with the details of what you're looking for (bedrooms, area, etc.) I can let you know - plmjcm at gmail.com

Sounds like he's clueless! If they aren't able to show you their official policies/regulations in writing, you can also mention that in your complaint to the Central Bank. Banks are heavily regulated and expected to be transparent in their fees/regulations/etc. All the best, let us know how you get on :)

You can lodge a complaint about a bank through their website: http://www.centralbank.ae/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=151&Itemid=123 Also, I suggest asking the Manager to provide you with a copy of the bank's official policy document regarding account closures. This document should state/spell out the same information that they are giving you verbally.

dxbinthecity, this sounds very "dodgy" to me, and completely ridiculous. You should be able to close a bank account full stop! Systems are built to support business operations, not the other way around, so what they are telling you is false and they can't use the excuse that the "system doesn't allow it". If the system doesn't allow it, then there must be an official policy document which supports that. Ask them to show you the policy/rule which says what they are telling you. And I suggest you contact the Central Bank and file a complaint. What they are doing can't be legal! Good luck!!

My August bill was double my July bill and I did nothing different in August! My AC is on the exact same hours of the day and my garden watering system has had the same timings for the last 4 months. It looks like we're charged an "August premium" or something! It happens to me every year. Sounds like a good story for the newspapers! Maybe we can get an explanation for this phenomenon.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I will do some research online re brands and then hunt one down in the places you recommended. Di@DXB - very useful feedback and seems spot on. I'm actually looking for one because I have lots of cowl neck dresses/shirts and also lots of things with pleats. I don't want to send them to be professionally ironed every time (at the dry cleaners) and it's really difficult to iron them properly with an iron/flat press.

Most university bookshops should have this book. Call a few universities here in Dubai and check with their bookshop.

Thanks, kpea and fairycakeyumm. I will follow up with Javed. I have been corresponding with Jumeirah Carpentry via email, but its just dragged on and on (3 weeks!). What I need done is quite simple and wouldn't take more than a day's worth of work, so I'm a bit frustrated with the amount of time it took them to give me a quote, and clarify a couple of things. I would like to have a back up plan because I'm worried things won't work out on time.

Try Richies 04 3414484. Slightly more expensive than the others but very professional and reliable. Always deliver on time. Have switched to them recently.

Hugsys, I'm so happy that you found a solution! :) That's brilliant news! Just wanted to add one final step to your three below, as I found out recently that (even with a stamp from the UAE embassy abroad), nothing is official until the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE has attested it. So after you get your certificate back from the UK with the UAE embassy stamp, just take it down to MOFA in Bur Dubai, pay Dhs 150 per page (for the express/instant service) and get a MOFA sticker. It's a very straightforward and easy process, once they see the UAE embassy stamp. Took me 10 minutes last time and ladies get special treatment, so no queues :) Good luck with everything!

I looked into Middlesex last year when I was thinking of doing a Masters and retraining in teaching. Their degree comes from the UK from the home campus, so its recognised as any other UK university would be. After speaking to a few people I found that a PG Cert in teaching would be a better option for me, so I'm going to do that instead.

SkyKitty, you have to sign up for one of the three (morning, afternoon, evening) and attend that, but if there are occasions when you can't make it to your regular class, you can go to another one. You do get into a rhythm with your classmates and it actually feels odd to attend another session. Kathyt, you can have a look at their FB page which has all the info: http://www.facebook.com/arabiclanguagecentre Bindurai is spot on re practice and continuity. We used to meet outside class to practice :)

I just completed Beginners 1 at the Arabic Language Centre (at the World Trade Centre) and it was really great. The teacher was fantastic, the method was well thought out and easy to follow, and everything was integrated (grammar, vocabulary, etc.). The amount I learnt in just 9 weeks was amazing and motivating. I'm doing Beginners 2 next month. The term starts on Feb 8 or 9, so you have time to sign up if you decide to go with this option. They have classes in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. Good luck :)

Bikey, as far as I'm aware you have to have your fingerprints taken to get a Good Conduct Certificate issued. Last time I had this done (4 years ago!) I had to go down to the Dubai Police HQ next to Al Mulla Plaza. You need to have the application typed (in English and Arabic, from memory), pay the fee and then they take your fingerprints (electronically). You collect the certificate within a few days. There was a separate section for women. Not sure if they have the fingerprinting facility at the Jebel Ali Police Station as it is fairly small. Parking was a nightmare in the days when I had this done, but maybe there is a metro station near by now so you could take the metro. Good luck with it!

Just wanted to add my two thumbs up for Ahlan. Friend arrived on Sunday night and based on this thread I booked Ahlan for the first time instead of Marhaba. They were amazing! Met her off the plane, took her through and actually PHONED ME to say they had her, where would I like them to bring her, etc. and then pushed her trolley all the way to the car in the car park! They were really brilliant! Highly recommended!

Popsicle, I posted on this recently on another thread. I used Greenpeople for my lawn and they were great. Its just like Dragon said - amazing, natural looking grass! They are very pricey, but in the long term you get value for money because there is virtually no maintenance required and DEWA bills have gone down heaps. Its worth it IMHO.

Bella, from several past experiences, the leak is most likely in your garden or in your main water tank. You would have noticed it in the house by now, becuase a 400% increase in your bill means its been going on for a while, so it probably isn't inside. Check the main water tank, the irrigation pipes and the garden water tank (if you have one that is separate to your main water tank). I used Jim Will Fix It and they were able to pinpoint the problem in 10 seconds simply by turning off the water supply to the garden water tank. The meter immediately stopped spinning. Turns out, I had a huge hole in my underground tank! Good luck - I hope you sort it out soon.

Hi McB, I used the Green People (www.greenpeopleme.com). I went for the standard Bermuda grass which was approx Dhs 30 per sq foot. Like I said - expensive, but I had already spent twice what I paid for the fake grass, trying to plant, grow and maintain a real lawn! I wish I had just had the fake grass put in to begin with. It really looks amazing and I get comments on it all the time. First they came around and measured everything, then gave me a quote and it took them one day to install. They organise the gate passes, approvals etc. as I'm in a gated community. As for the trees, I have tried for ages to find someone who would look after my trees (trim, shape, etc.) but no one seems to be willing to do it. I tried the Garden Centre, but they said they only did commercial projects and were too busy. My gardener has a go every couple of months, but he usually just "hacks them to death"!!!!

Agree with Bella! I had fake grass put in a year ago. Very pricey but worth every fils! No maintenance (just hose down once a month or so), no watering, no cutting, no insects, easy to clean and looks lush green and healthy all the time. The quality is great and most people can't tell it isn't real. Even the gardener had to look closely :)

I was thinking of switching careers earlier this year and looked into an MA TESOL with Middlesex. I have now postponed my big career change until after I leave Dubai! But I was impressed with the Middlesex offers. I met the program leader who was very helpful. They have lots of different degrees that I didn't find elsewhere, in education, psychology, etc. All the classes are in the evenings for masters students, which would have suited me. I also wanted part time, so that was going to be two nights a week. Good luck with whatever you decide. I don't have kids so can't help with feedback there, but I'm a strong believer in lifelong learning for women :-)

Just went through this, Wiggle. Applied for final bill online on Tuesday and was disconnected by Wednesday!! The final bill takes 3 working days, so when I went in on Thursday to pay it, it wasn't ready. So they disconnect fairly quickly and then prepare the bill. Usually they deduct the final bill from the deposit and give you the difference back. Good luck!

I have tried Dubai Mall and MOE. The Dubai Mall one is quite small and the screen is tiny, like GA said below, but the seats are much comfier and the service seems to be better. Last time I went to the one in MOE, it took almost an 30 min to get an orange juice!! Food prices are standard at both (30 - 60 dhs range for the meals and 20 - 40 dhs for snacks). I haven't been to the Dubai Marina Mall one, but I have friends who go there all the time. From what I understand, they only have the fancy seats anyway (Dhs 50 for a regular ticket, I think they said), and the Gold Class. Hope you have a good time :)

It's worth having a current health card in case of emergencies. Only the government hospitals really have all of the equipment to deal with serious emergencies so you may be taken there if a private hospital is unable to treat you. If this does happen, you need a health card or you will pay much higher fees. For Dhs 300 per year, it gives you peace of mind :)

Zaabs, there should be an option for you to pay a fee and avoid leaving/re-entering the country. Check with your PRO. It will depend on type of visa/emirate/etc.

They are "noise barriers" - meant to dull the traffic noise for residents. We have them in Australia and even though they try to make them look "pretty" with paintings and colours, they are fairly hideous, I agree.

Baskets and boxes :) I use baskets in the kitchen to organise my pantry (teas in one basket, sauces in another, etc.) so I just pull one out of the cupboard to get to what I need. Same in the bathroom cupboards (creams in one basked, make-up in another, etc.). In the study I use boxes for the same purpose. I have a standard IKEA shelf lined with boxes for receipts, documents, gift wrapping items, manuals, cables, CDs, etc. Everything goes into a basket or a box, and when I need something I just pull the right one out and rummage through it till I find what I need :)

Carrefour have a good selection (size-wise) but they are the cheap variety and don't last very long if exposed to the sun. ACE also have quite a few, which are more expensive, but also more durable.

scp, I work in HR (training) and you really need a CIPD accredited program if you want to do postgrad study in the area. Either a Masters in HR or an MBA with a HR specialisation, for example. I am looking into a career change, personally, so I've been researching all the different postgrad courses offered in Dubai. From memory, the Middlesex HR masters is CIPD accredited so maybe you can look into that one. Good luck :)

I did the SeaWings flight a couple of months ago after I got a special 50% off deal on GoNabIt. It was 45min from Jebel Ali Hotel down to the Creek Golf Club, with all the sights along the way - two Palms, Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah, Burj Dubai, Meydan. It was fantastic! You need a nice clear day though. They drove me back to the hotel to get my car, but I understand there are also full round trips you can book. They also threw in a Dhs 250 food voucher for any restaurant at the Creek Yacht/Golf clubs.

I think I saw a private room at the Fish Market restaurant, at the Airport Meridien. Rodeo Grill at the Al Bustan Rotana also has partitions which can be used to create a completely private room. The Meat Co in Madinat Jumeirah and Teatro at the Towers Rotana also have private dining spaces, but they are just partitioned off (i.e. not a separate room). Can't think of any others right now... HTH
