I'm from the UK and my parents visit regularly and never have any issues that you've mentioned below. Like your dad, they're both fit and well, exercise regularly and their GP is more than happy for them to enjoy a holiday in the sun. My dad turned 80 this year and his most recent trip was a month from mid March-April. He loved every second as usual! He's also on Warfarin and had no issues. I get their visas via Al Maha meet and greet service at the airport. I'd strongly recommend that you use these agents to meet your dad from the plane and whisk him through immigration to you. I wouldn't have my parents arrive in Doha any other way. Real peace of mind for both you and him. However I would caution you on your proposed timing. End of July really would be too much for him. By mid April my dad was starting to find the heat uncomfortable and he is well used to high temperatures (him and mum go to Greece in July each year). If you want him to truly enjoy his time in Doha, then wait until late September at the earliest. I hope you have a lovely time together!

Sorry Malice, just saw your posting tonight! Hopefully you both went along and enjoyed the coffee morning today. If not, then to answer your questions then yes, you just turn up, no need for an invitation! It's the ideal way to start making friends on the Pearl and finding out tons of useful info!

We are coming over from Qatar to go to the Michael Buble concert at the Dubai International Stadium. Is there a metro line to that will take us there or will we have to get a taxi? Also, any decent hotels close to the venue? Thanks for your help.

Hi Chirpy1 and malice30. Welcome to Doha! The Pearl ladies are a lovely bunch and very friendly and sociable! They meet for a coffee and chat each Sunday at 10am in Caribou Coffee. Why not go along and meet lots of new neighbours? I hope you enjoy living at the Pearl, I've been there nearly four years and love it :)

Yes, hubby opened an Aramex account a couple of years ago (at the time there was a booth in Landmark mall, not sure if it is still there or not?) It is basically a courier company that gives you an ''address" in the UK from which your purchases are automatically forwarded to the Aramex office in Doha. When I placed my order with Asos, I entered that address for delivery. You can track your deliveries online and once your parcel arrives in Doha, you will receive a text. You then pop along to the office and collect it!

A work colleague regularly orders from ASOS without any issues. I placed my first order with them last Saturday and am using Aramex to deliver it here. Apparently it is due to be delivered this coming Sunday! I'll let you know if it arrives as planned.

Your poor daughter Joyce, you must be devastated for her, this is a dreadful thing to happen. Can't believe the heartless cretin sent a text. I speak from experience when I say that she has some very dark days ahead of her but with loving family and friends by her side she will get through this and find a happy ending. Hug her as tightly as you can, she will never have needed you more. Thank goodness your time in Qatar is over and you're close by in Scotland. edited by Jonners on 01/08/2014

They organise tours of the Grand Mosque too (an amazing experience, I highly recommend it)so it would be worth calling them. I don't have kids but have noticed that the Intercon beach and pool area (near Katara/Cultural Village) is always very popular with families. I also turned 40 shortly after arriving in Doha and have really enjoyed my 40s so far! In fact I am healthier and in better shape than I've ever been! Have a great day when it comes :)

How ever I just wanted to say thanks to you and your hubby they've had a wonderful second chance at life, I wish there were more people like you in the world! And I also wanted to wish you well in your new adventure (i think you're off to Oz?) Take care and I hope your new life is happy, healthy and successful!

RubyBlue, first thing you need to do is get yourself the name and number of a good driver. Trying to flag a cab down in the street would be at best frustrating!! Use the search function and you'll find a few recent threads with the details of drivers recommended by us. These guys are trustworthy, know their way around Doha and are only a phone call away. I use a lovely man called Bavi, you can reach him on 6665 1418.

In terms of rates, I pay Bavi per trip but I am only using him on nights out at weekends. If you are using your driver most days then it would definitely be worth asking about a flat monthly rate for the regular journeys to and from work. Other journeys could be paid on an as used basis I guess. Don't worry about organising a driver, it is something that most of us have on speed dial and there are plenty of lovely drivers around, I'd suggest you use one of those already recommended on here though, just to be on the safe side.

I agree with Glorious Morning. Get Al Maha to process them through immigration and there is no issue with payment. Apparently the queues on arrival are horrendous at the moment, I'd certainly not want my folks to be waiting for hours after the long journey to Qatar!

Hi Sandy82, You mention you'll likely be moving to the Pearl or West Bay. I know that the Pearl has a ladies networking FB page. They're an active and sociable bunch, meeting for coffee at one of the Pearl cafes and having nights out at local hotels! The ladies of West Bay also have a coffee morning in Jones the Grocer at The Gate Mall each week, I think it is Sunday morning. I work full time so haven't been to any of these but have read that people really enjoy them. Might be a good starting point for meeting folk and finding out more about Doha. DH and I also live on the Pearl and really really enjoy it. Like you, we don't have any kids and it is ideal for us.

Sandy82, I'd recommend that you get the phone number of a good, reliable driver. Don't rely on the likes of Karwa and Al Million. Having someone on speed dial as such may perhaps help you regain a bit of your independence. Us EW ladies can provide you with phone numbers if you want. Keep your chin up, this is a really good place to live once you have settled and 'found your feet'.
