Hi Patience, I know that HMC actually has it's own mini-compound of apartments which I believe are very close to the main hospital. As Dan Lou said, ask them directly and then we can help you further. Good luck!

A nice and , am sure, very welcome surprise for your visitors! We paid 300 for each of my parents, that included the visa on arrival so am guessing the 200 is for their service only. We have Al Maha greet them in the immigration hall, just inside the doorway. They've always been standing waiting for my folks when they get off the bus, never had a problem with them being 'missed' as such. At work, we arrange for our visitors to be met at the plane and again, there has never been a problem, even for those who have never visited Doha before and have no idea what Al Maha is.

We live on the Pearl and my husband works down near the souq, so much further than the Sheraton. His commute is absolutely fine, takes him 20 minutes to get to work in the morning (although he does leave around 6am) and about 30-35 minutes to come home at 6.30pm.

Splinters, we were in Petra just last week. It was *amazing*, I only with we could have spent more time, there is SO much to see. Ideally, I'd have stayed for 2 days (there is a Movenpick right outside the entrance to the site). Re. the drive from Amman, it took around 3 hours with various stop-offs for photo opportunities. Some of the scenery en route is breathtaking, the drive didn't feel long and arduous at all. Hope you enjoy as much as we did!

I can't recommend a lovely man called Bavi highly enough. Safest driver I have ever had in Doha as are the wonderful team of men who work for him, you can contact him on 6665 1418. If I had kids, I wouldn't hesitate to entrust them to these gentlemen.

A work colleague said that the spa in the Movenpick Towers in West Bay is very reasonably priced. You could also enjoy a post-massage bite to eat in Wok Mee restaurant on the ground floor!

Hi Jennywren! I'm from Kilmarnock so it is nice to see someone from (near!) my neck of the woods on the forum :) DH and I have been in Doha for 3 years and really enjoy it. I don't have kids so can't help with the schools but am happy to help answer any other questions you might have. Enjoy your anniversary night out, the Sharq and Oryx Rotana are both lovely!

My friend made THE most amazing dip at the weekend. I could have eaten my bodyweight in it.... Bake a whole camembert in the oven then, when done, spoon some apricot jam over it and sprinkle chopped, grilled walnuts on top. She served it with small rice crackers which were perfect for scooping. Absolutely yummy.

Hi Happ1, There are tons of threads on this subject - it is close to many of our hearts ;) I'd suggest you do a search on 'hairdresser' for the Qatar forum, you'll get lots of information that way. There have been multiple discussions on that very topic. edited by Jonners on 01/04/2013

I drive from the Pearl to Education City each day. Depending on the traffic (!) it can take me anything from 30 - 50 minutes each way. I take the road past CNA-Q and Duhail petrol station, it seems to be the quickest route.

Ladies, DH are coming to Oman for a few nights R&R. We've already stayed at some of the well-known luxury hotels but are looking for something a bit more budget-friendly this time. Can anyone recommend some hotels which don't cost the earth and are, ideally, within walking distance of some nice restaurants? Thanks in advance.

Hi Txiki, Lalala is right, if you look through the posts from the past couple of months you will be able to find a lot of really helpful information. We've had some new ladies arrive in Doha recently, all of whom asked pretty much exactly what you're hoping to find out. Once you've had a read through, you'll be sure to have some specific questions which the lovely Doha forum ladies will be more than happy to help you with. Good luck with your move!

Don't worry about it! Somehow with the driver's side of the car also being the opposite to what I was used to, it all felt quite natural! In fact when I was back in Scotland last year I really had to concentrate hard when I was driving, it felt very unnatural to be back on the left hand side of the road.

Yes IrnBru, Hakkasan is in the St Regis. Our friends also recommend the Astor Grill in that hotel, they've been a few times. Another place that we enjoy is the tapas restaurant at the Oryx, think it is called The Cellar? Yummy tapas, nice wine and always a great atmosphere. We've had a few great nights at Ipanema in the Marriot City Center, its a Brazilian Churrascaria - one of the best places for atmosphere that I've been to in Doha! A really fun night! I love this thread......:)

Oh dear, you poor thing :( DH and I use Al Ahli Hospital for walk-in appointments to see a General Practitioner. We've always had great treatment from them. I know they accept AXA insurance, don't know about other insurance providers unfortunately. Perhaps you can call them to check? Their number is 4489 8888. Hi there, we don't have a maid so can't help you re that query. However, regarding the transport issue then I'd suggest that you engage a driver to take your son to and from school. Many of my work colleagues do that with their children so certainly not outwith the norm. I can recommend a driver if you want, some of my colleagues use him and his wonderful team of drivers to take them and their children to work/school. Safe drivers, reliable, and just lovely guys. They saved me when my broken leg put me out of action!!! Let me know if you would like his contact number.

Hi Sweetestpear! Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for you in terms of specific apartments but maybe cheaper to take a non serviced apartment outwith Doha and just pay for a maid to come in a couple of times a week. I can utterly sympathise as I broke my leg in the summer and was unable to walk or drive for three months. We don't have a maid so I had to get our cleaner to come in for a few extra hours, I sent out our ironing and got myself the number of a great driver who helped me to and from work each day including my wheelchair! If your mum can take care of your baby then you can get help to take care of everything else. I strongly suggest you get a wheelchair, it means you can do so much more than if you are hobbling around on crutches. I could actually prepare the meals (albeit took me much longer than usual to cook even the simplest of food)and i could take care of the laundry too - using crutches means you cant carry anything, so frustrating. Plus it was much easier to get round the supermarket with my husband. Keep your chin up, this has been a terrible start to your new life but it will get easier, trust me!
