All the major hotels throw some form of New Years bash so no shortage of parties!! Last year I just called round reach of them and asked for details - within a few minutes I had tons of options! Incidentally we opted for Isaan at the Grand Hyatt in the end and had a fantastic time. You could also look through Timeout Doha, it is bound to have a rundown of what's on offer.

I know that Asteco manages our tower in the Pearl, you could try giving them a shot. If you google Asteco you can easily find their website or their number is 4411 3818.

I live in the Pearl and work in Education City. Normally takes me approximately 30 minutes to get to work but can take as much as 45 minutes if the traffic is heavy. Please note I am a very conservative (I.e. slow!!) driver so you may be able to shave a few minutes of those times. edited by Jonners on 19/12/2012

Afternoon tea at the Ritz is always nice. We've also hired a speed boat from the Diplomatic Club for a lovely trip round the bay. I've heard good things about Black Pearl for your trip to the Inland Sea. Have a lovely time!

Hi ladies! I'm Scottish too so can understand your wish to celebrate Hogmanay properly ;) We had my parents with us last festive season and on NY eve we went to Isaan at the Grand Hyatt. They laid on such a lovely night - it place was packed so a fantastic party atmosphere, gorgeous food, cocktails, fizz etc and then at midnight, we all went outside and released chinese lanterns over the palm trees. People of all ages were there, it was fantastic! My parents are in their 70s and said it is the best NY eve they've ever had! Next morning wasn't so much fun though All the hotels lay on something on the 31st but strangely many of these events end AT or just before midnight! We chose Isaan as it ended around 1.30am. Hope you have a great time whatever you do! edited by Jonners on 25/10/2012 edited by Jonners on 25/10/2012

Lalala, I mean a police office in the UK. My husband I have both needed 'police clearance' since we arrived in Qatar - he only needed clearance locally (as Kitsune says, from the British embassy) whereas I need clearance from the police force back in Scotland. So 2 very different processes! Clear as mud, I know.....;)

I'd suggest you contact your local police office then. They can send you the forms and advise you. Thats what I did when I got mine - took me 3 months in all from start to finish!

Hi AliN, My husband and I live at the Pearl, its a lovely place to stay. In our tower, there are lots of children, ranging from baby age to teenagers so am fairly sure your little one would have some company. There is also a group called Doha Mums which I believe is an excellent source of meeting other mums and kids (www.dohamums.com) In our tower, the mums and kids tend to go to the pool early-mid morning and then later on in the afternoon (to avoid the heat!) so if you timed your viewings well, you could hopefully see for yourself if there are any children. Am sure the mums would be willing to give you some quick feedback on their experiences at the Pearl, I know that I've often answered questions from viewers when am sunning myself at the pool! Good luck to you and your family.

The welcome service Marycatherine is talking about is called Al Maha and she is absolutely right, it is WELL worth the money. To arrange, your DH just has to pop into the Al Maha officeat the airport with your flight details and some cash. Good luck!

You don't say what you need done but many of my friends have used him for botox and fillers. Some of them love him and others are less than happy. Those who are unhappy feel that he tries to make as much money as possible and as a result 'over-treats' them. This has lead to severe headaches, a droopy eye and horrendous bills. A few of them now go to Dr. Abdullah http://drhassanmedical.com/

Hi Parkclark, Quick reply for you re rental costs. DH and I used to stay in a 3 bedroom furnished apartment in Beverly Hills Al Rayyan - cost was 12,000 riyals p/m. We now stay at the Pearl in an unfurnished 2 bedroom apartment (bigger than the 3 bedroom) - cost is 13,000 p/m. The only contents when we moved in were the fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and cooker. We bought our furniture in Qatar - its not my ideal choice but its absolutely fine and we should be able to sell it once we move on. I'm a fan of the minimalist look so we didn't have to spend too much to furnish the place. You will find somewhere great, I'm quite sure. Best of luck to you and your DH! :)

As LilBubbly suggests, definitely check out Air Arabia. We went on Kenyan safari with them last July and for 2 of us, it cost approx. 15,000 riyals (we're in Qatar). That was for *everything* - flights, hotels, food, the whole safari experience. I thought it was excellent value for money. Hope you get something sorted, its an AMAZING experience!

Hi Loranaji, Well done to your husband on his great job offer! Your question is a little general to be honest, perhaps that is the reason you haven't received any responses. I'd suggest that you first spend some time reading past threads - these already have a wealth of information within and will give you a clearer idea of day to day life and (its challenges here!) in Qatar. For example, you mention you have family - if this means they are of school age then there are lots of threads which will give you advice on finding school places for them. Housing is another topic which is very widely covered. Without knowing anything about you, ie what kind of lifestyle you have already, it is pretty difficult for us to help you decide what would be a pro or a con for you here in Qatar. We're a helpful bunch so I'd suggest you start your thread again, posting some specific questions that you may have. We can take it from there and am sure you'll end up with all the information you need! Hope that helps :)

Chizz, everyone in our tower had their meter readings done about 6 weeks ago. It was organised by our tower's management. The bill isn't really the cost of consumption but rather the cost of *having* Qatar Cool supplied to the apartment. Please don't just go on your units used as a basis for calculating what your bill will be or you are going to have a unpleasant surprise at the end of 2 years! There is a flat fee that everyone has to pay, even if you don't use the AC at all. Remember you have a supply of cold water so you at least have to pay for that. I can't remember the numbers of the top of my head but it was around 5500 riyals for the standard charges plus 'admin fees'.

Funnily enough we got our first bill in a couple of days ago. For 9 month period, it was just under 6000 riyals. About 90% of that was the standard charges, we had very very few units of consumption (we are both out at work all day and the apartment is generally very cool anyway so not much AC needed). edited by Jonners on 20/05/2012

We were there in April 2011. Had SUCH an amazing time, its a gorgeous hotel. We opted for the all-inclusive package so that may be worth considering because from the cursory glance we had at some of the prices and yes, it was expensive.

Gail, if you do a search for the word 'glow' that should return loads of threads on Doha hairdressers. Glow is one of the most popular salons here so any thread with that name mentioned will also include names of other places. Good luck!

I'm just looking for a very basic, simple model which he can use to skype his family. Obviously we don't want to spend heaps of cash either ;) TIA.
