What subject are you interested in? Most of these libraries will require you to be a resident here in Qatar/have a Qatari ID and will charge a refundable deposit fee to become a library patron. If you don't wish to pay the fee you can always just sit in the libraries and read. The Museum of Islamic Art also has a library and a great section for reading/studying. Contact Oxford Learning Center. They have two locations near airport and Landmark. You don't have to have certification to teach there, it's fun and pays well :) qatar at oxfordlearning dot com

It's important to take into account their requirements for getting loans if you plan on getting one. QNB was the only bank I found that did not demand a letter from my employer stating that they would hand over my last month's salary to them to cover the loan in the event of my termination. I like QNB and have had no problems.. besides the tellers not being able to do much! If you want to know your balance after depositing at a teller you then have to go to customer service to find out..

Also, Joos, when you say they are partners with Qatar airways what do you mean? I am using up some airmiles from Star Alliance with United but I can't see that QA is part of this group...unless United are partners with several award groups maybe? malaz, I know where you are coming from. I am 24 and have been here for over a year now. I do miss home and its drama.. but surely you can find the same in Qatar. It seems like you haven't settled yet here or found a solid group of people. I myself work two jobs, 10 hour days between the two and just don't have the energy to "live" much most days, so I do end up questioning if it's worth it. There are tons of events here in Doha, but unfortunately they aren't well advertised and if you don't find out by word of mouth, you probably would never know about most of them! Living here is really what you make of it. You have to put out effort to meet people and do things. Family life and experiences, however, cannot be replaced, and that is the biggest issue for me here.

Qatar Foundation does have their own compound (Qatar Foundation Complex) in addition to others. This one is very close to QF itself. They do allow pets and there are lots of families. My coworkers who live there are happy.

The stores with camping gear across from the Souq Waqif parking lot have sleeping bags. These are the stores right by the traffic light where the falcons are.

If you go to bandar (where all the boats are next to the Museum of Islamic Art) you can just find them there and negotiate.. Unless you are looking for an actual buisiness. Went once and after having two Arab male friends negotiate, paid 200 QR for one hour each.. Halfway through two of us were stranded out in the water because we had run out of fuel. Fun fun fun.. :)

Has anyone been to Oishi Sushi near/in Royal Plaza? Is it still open? Craving sushi and looking for reasonably priced options.. I guess it's fair to say hotels would be most expensive. Have an entertainer book but not sure if any places in it offer sushi

I am all for threading, have been doing it for years and usually do it myself at home. However, a few months ago here in Qatar my friend had an Indian woman come to her home for hair removal and I happened to be there, so I had her thread my eyebrows. They looked beautiful right after, but the next few days I couldn't move my eyebrows and was in pain.. large pimples had come up all where she had threaded despite her having cleaned the area before and after :-( So beware..

I already know that Qatar banks dont give loans or credit cards for the first year. Never heard of this.. I got a car loan after working for three months (they want to see three months of your salary statements) and they really tried to get me to have a credit card at the same time

The one I saw is right where the falcon shops are.. right on the street that you go on to pull into the main parking lot, same street that the small white mosque is on. You don't need to go inside the complex as it's right on the street. Hope that helps and that they have what you need!

Went back to Dr. Sarah's again today to get my filling fixed (673 QR) and for wisdom teeth xrays (460 QR). Filling repair was fine, no pain at all. I'm happy with Dr. Zareena in that regard. After I had the xrays done, we went back into the room and she immediately started talking about when I was going to make the appointment to have my teeth pulled. Umm... shouldn't we talk about this first??! Wait, so I DO have to get all four pulled? I asked and she went back to talking about the appointments. I asked again for the reason why I should have them taken out (All of my teeth are perfectly straight so there was nothing obvious to me in the xray). I was never given a straight answer and left completely unconvinced. I will not be going back there and needless to say I didn't make an appointment with the oral surgeon.

Once you set up your Aramex account (you can do it in Qatar at any Aramex office for 164 QR (as of Nov '11)) you are given three mailboxes: one in the US, one in the UK and one in China. You can use these addresses to ship to, whether you buy something online or someone from home sends you a package. Once your item arrives to your mailbox, it gets forwarded on to your Qatar Aramex branch. You pay for place of departure to US/UK/China mailbox when you send/order the item. When it arrives at your Qatar Aramex branch (when you pick it up), you pay what it cost to send it from the US/UK/China mailbox to Qatar. From my US mailbox to Qatar for a 8.25 lb. package it cost 272 QR. Took three days to get from US mailbox to Qatar. Not cheap, but fast! I believe they asked for a copy of my passport when opening the account, but I doubt your nationality matters. edited by joos on 03/01/2012

I knew I had a broken filling and had been told by my dentist in the US that I needed to have my wisdom teeth removed. Will go back again on Thursday to have xrays done for the final word. I did feel pressure to get the flouride treatment though! I chose Dr. Sarah's because it is the only place covered both by AXA and BCBS, both which I have. That way if I exceed either limit I can use the second insurance. I have no complaints about the job Dr. Zareena did though. Keep in mind it was only my first visit.

Hi there. Here is what I paid yesterday at Dr. Sarah's: Dental examination fee: 252.80 Super salt scale and polish: 368.00 Small digital radiograph: 68.00 (2x, one for each side of mouth) Flouride treatment: 202.40 (probably not necessary but I haven't been to the dentist in years so figured I'd get it..) Will update with more.. getting a filling repaired on Thurs and then wisdom teeth out later :-/ But no cavities!! edited by joos on 02/01/2012 edited by joos on 02/01/2012
