Just wondering who you used to insurance your things in the end as I am in the same position now, the storage people don't have cover and my contents insurance won't cover it either.

Ask Stany from Cairo maintenance and Contracting, they are great, tidy, clean up after themselves and generally usually come in quite a bit lower than most other quotes. We have just used them to repaint the full villa, also used them for electrical items, carpentry, too and I have seen their tiling work and building renovations in a friends place, very good. Contact email is [email protected] or [email protected] :)

Hi Ladies Has anyone used a salvage or scrap buyer in Dubai before? We have had some renovation work done lately and have quite a lot of items (appliances, lights, plumbing bits and pieces etc) which would be good to sell on rather than just send to the landfill.....any recommendations? Thank you :)

Hi there barlas, update for you. I was asking for a quote for a 3 bed villa, with lounge, dining room and maids room. Ducting corresponding to 5 units, they usually quote per unit and living space areas I was told so good to know how many you have in the property. I asked the following 4 companies for quotes: Sani service - inspection showed damaged so recommended they do not do the work Churchill - inspection showed damaged so recommended they do not do the work Smashing - did not inspect just emailed us a quote for 4200 dhs Quality Care - did not inspect just emailed us a quote for 4500 dhs Both Sani Service and Churchill got back to me with an appointment to inspect the ducts for a quotation report including photos (free of charge) within hours. Smashing and quality care just emailed me a quote per the number of units and did not inspect the ducts before quoting. Have to admit having had both Sani-Service and Churchill inspect the ducts first there is no question I would rule out both Smashing and Quality Care on the basis they didn't come to look at the condition of the ducts as Sani Service and Churchill both discovered rips in the duct linings meaning cleaning of the ducts would not be suitable for the villa as the ducts are already damaged. If we had agreed to go with Smashing or Quality Care just on the quote we would have ended up paying for work to be done that wasn't suitable and would have further damaged the duct linings. Both Sani Service and Churchill seemed very professional, I know Sani service have a reputation for higher costs however given the professionalism during the visit you can see the difference in the technicians level of knowledge compared to some companies in dubai. I know someone who has used Churchill and they were very happy so based on the above I would happily contact either Sani service or Churchill in the future if a different property needed the ducts looking at. Hope that helps

We have used Cairo Building Maintenance and Decoration Company electrician several times, their company in general are very good, always clean up after themselves, polite etc. They are usually quite busy so always good to phone them to try schedule in the work if you can. I have used them for tiling, painting, electrics (burnt out sockets, fitting new sockets, wiring of ceiling lights etc), making cupboard doors, new bathroom and kitchen and have no complaints about any of it. Contact details are John in the office on 04 3392088 or the company owner Stany (sometimes goes by Rony as well) 050 6452160, email address [email protected] or [email protected] Company has been operating in Dubai for well over 20 years so established and prices are probably lowest we have come across. Hope that helps :)

I think sports city is under rated in terms of transport links, you avoid alot of traffic because you have direct access straight onto Emirates road (in both directions), easy access to Al Khail road via hessa street etc. You also end up hardly ever using Salik, having lived in both Sports City and Emirates living in the last few years I have to say sports city hands down is the better location in terms of driving. To be fair it takes anyone half an hour to get anywhere in Dubai, door to door from sports city to DIFC / Burj Khalifa area it takes 25 minutes normally during work hours. Sports city has the Els club which is nice for a family meal, motor city spinneys for shopping right next door which is biggest in dubai, Victory Heights is very family orientated and its really nice to walk around there with the kids or let them play on their bikes, plus there are some kids play grounds dotted round Victory Heights, and Victory Heights do regular movie nights in the parks during the cooler months which the kids love. If you live in one of the apartments the apartment buildings all have pools etc and you can still walk round Victory Heights itself, very nice in the cooler months. I have a few friends living there and there seems to be a mix of nationalities South Africa, European, Japanese, Pakistan, most buildings have security too. The canal is behind schedule but there are currently cladding the Canal walls, a rumour has it sometime late this year the Canal West residences will open, if they do presumably it won't be long till the canal and facilities follow so make the most of the lower rents for now as a big upside :)

Evening All After many hair disasters in Dubai am looking for some recommendations, tired of coming home after a hair cut and colour and wishing the weeks away so it will grow out again. Am looking for someone who can cut long layers into fine hair and listen to what you actually tell them you want! Also looking for someone who is good with blonde highlights, several lighter haired friends have seen recently just seem to be quite yellowish after a short while and quite dull looking and am desperately looking for something to make me feel half decent for a change rather than walking round feeling a mess :) Thanks Ladies

Just want to add after seeing the access post, access to VH is actually really good, i have never been stuck in a que (even at peak times) to either enter or get out of VH as there are 3 gates to use and they are never that busy. There is work going on at the east gate (from motor city over to VH) for the new interchange but that will be completed in a few months time and isnt affecting traffic right now as far as i have experienced, the back gate is very quiet as a lot of people dont know its even there, and the front gate to emirates road is great too....they are redoing the underpass to emirates road Abu dhabi direction from the front gate but again work is well underway and it causes no problems getting in or out of VH at any time of the day. There will be a 4th gate in the future off the top of Al Khail Road interchange with emirates road, suspect this will be finished when that interchange is finished at the end of this year or early next year....hope that puts your mind at ease re access. Ranches could be more of an issue with access as the RTA are closing the entry/ exit permanently off the first roundabout on Al Qudra road to finish road works on that road....that will leave the ranches with only two entry points for more houses than VH....hopefully the RTA will rethink that but the official notice went out quite a while ago

Having spent a great deal of time living at both I am going to say VH. The house layouts are nicer, and brighter internally, the community landscaping is great with so many pathways through the interior park areas between houses which are not on the roads so its safer for kids. VH has been friendlier in my overall experience....not that ranches isn't as it is but VH has been a nicer overall family environment. It is quicker getting to the big motor city spinneys from VH than ranches and the express spinneys (by the green community motor city houses) is close by as well. If you want to use Le marche its a few minutes drive away down emirates road but in reality both locations really are excellent. With the 2 new interchanges not far off being finished VH exit to emirates road is ridiculously quick, there is the Els club for golf and the club house official openning will be autumn, several community pools with gyms (ranches doesnt have community gyms) and lots of kids play areas dotted about....i like both locations and still spend a lot of time at the ranches so dont think you can go wrong with either....go visit a few houses in both and see what you think. More facilities are on the way for both motor city and sports city in the future, one thing to bear in mind is where in the ranches you go for as Emaar have just bought the large plot of land next to the ranches on Al Qudra road so they will be building on there at some point in the not too distant future.... the only other downside to the ranches can be global village if you are down that end. Also bear in mind some of the villas are cheaper per sqft in VH at the moment as its still newer, some people dont even realise its more or less finished so if you are looking for value for money definitely check out VH. Equally sports city isnt finished yet and there is more work to come in the future so if you want a fully completed community ranches off course is established but values in VH will increase as more facilities are added . Either way am sure you will enjoy either :)
