I don't think it's HMC. Recently, in Education City there's been trouble getting visas for new employees. Makes it VERY awkward for everyone. The employer is powerless if MOI refuses to issue a visa. No use to ask "why", of course. There's never an explanation. Wasta helps sometimes.

You also owe taxes on the fair market value of your housing and transportation and other benefits. Your tax rate all depends on how much above the exemption you make.

Yes, if you qualify for the "foreign domicile exemption" you can spend more than 35 days in the US. My state doesn't offer tax exemption based on foreign residence.

Oh, yes! The US is one of the few countries that tax foreign-earned income. You will owe all state and local taxes. If you qualify for the federal foreign income tax exemption - and be careful that you meet all the criteria - after the first year you can exclude up to $93,500 of your income. Some of the criteria include not spending more than 35 days in the US in any calendar year. Have a professional do your taxes, you don't want any nasty surprises. The exclusion will save you maybe $20,000.

May I suggest visiting one of the churches in Qatar. They meet on Fridays and it's every week so there are a lot of chances to meet other expats in a congenial atmosphere. They styles range from traditional to charismatic so you have a wide choice of venues! You also get a chance to scope out spin-off activities such as volunteer programs, etc.

The Al Khor gated community is green but that doesn't apply to Al Khor the town!

I would be very reluctant to come to Qatar if my employer was not allowing/helping me to sponsor my husband. I really don't understand why they are offering to give you family status for your children but not your husband.

Well, they won't teach you how to speak Arabic. You will (very slowly) learn to read and write Qu'ranic Arabic. After 5 levels you will have a vocabulary of about 300 mostly archaic words. The Arabic language is actually many dialects and is best learned in two separate courses, written and spoken.

Just keep trying. I think it took us three attempts to get our maid permit and another two or three to transfer her.

It looks like the UA flight does a round-robin, flying to Doha via Dubai but non-stop Doha to Washington.

United will be using the same aircraft so will you probably remain on-board like you do on BA in Bahrain.

Church on a Friday morning or a Sunday night? Nice way to meet people.

I think your expertise and your services would be very welcome and needed in Doha. But there are a great number of legal issues involved with setting up a business in Qatar, including having to have a Qatari sponsor that owns at least 51% of the business. Licensure is another issue. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how to do this. Perhaps Qatar Business and Professional Women's Association?
