Hi, Have any of you tried the HRT cake? My Mother in Law can't take any medication and she came across the cake and gave it a go. She has no mood swings or sweats at all and swears by it. 4 oz. (100g) Soya Flour 4 oz. (100g) Wholewheat Flour 8 oz. (200g) Raisins 4 oz. (100g) Porridge Oats 4 oz. (100g) Linseeds 2 oz. (50g) Sunflower Seeds 2 oz. (50g) Pumpkin Seeds 2 oz. (50g) Sesame Seeds 2 oz. (50g) Flaked/Chopped Almonds Half teaspoon Nutmeg Half teaspoon Cinnamon Half teaspoon Ground Ginger 2 pieces Stem Ginger, chopped One tablespoon Malt Extract Approx. 3/4 pint Soya Milk Method: Put dry ingredients into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Add Soya Milk and Malt Extract. Mix well and leave to soak for half an hour. If mixture is too stiff, add more Soya Milk. Spoon into two small loaf tins lined with oiled greaseproof paper. Bake in oven, Gas 5/190c/375f for about 75 minutes. Turn out and leave to cool. Eat a slice daily, spread thinly with low-fat spread if desired. (Cakes can be frozen and used as required.)

As I noted before, we went again last Thursday night and I kept your questions in mind. Time wise, we leave Meadows as soon as DH gets in from work, putting us at Meydan at about 6.10, this is much too late to arrive if you're doing normal admission, I would say you need to get there an hour before the first race at least.... the closer to the end of the season you get, the busier the events are and hence the more traffic there is to deal with. I couldn't see any children in the terraces area, though there were dozens running around the ground level outside area (both normal and terrace ticket holders have access to this) That said, the area where we were is supposed to be 21+ only yet there were a half dozen (well dressed, well behaved) kids of between 7 and mid-teens there.... I think a lot of it is simply luck of the draw on the night.

They are normally pretty strict about access at Meydan, there will be security guys on every door checking that you have the correct passes, we were there 2 weeks ago and I watched a fairly senior looking local being refused admission to the owners lounge as he didn't have his pass on. That said, there always seems to be lots of kids running around so you might get lucky... we're off there again tonight so will keep an eye out and advise if I see anything.

It's great entertainment if you like horses and horse racing... we go numerous times each year (DH's boss owns a fair number of horses here) Personally I would splash the extra cash and go for the premium seating area, the view from there is excellent, with the finish post clearly visible, you can also go downstairs and outside if you want to be at ground level. Take your guests and enjoy it.

Yep, you can pick up a cooler in Carrefour and any of the water company bottle will fit. We've had a few coolers over the years and used several different water companies with no issues at all.

Will try and offer as much advice as I can as we did exactly this last year with DH's Dad and are doing the same thing in a few weeks with his Mum when she comes over. Flying into Amman is OK, the airport is fairly chaotic but friendly. Can't help with transport options as DH always hires a car and drives... driving in Amman was "interesting" but the rest of the country was easy. Our itinerary last time: Land Amman, collect hire car and drive to Amman Citadel. Walk around (we got a guide for a fee and he was worth the money) then walk down to the Amphitheater, no guide needed here, caught a cab back up to the citadel. Drive to Madaba and stay overnight (we did this so as to be away from Amman traffic ready for an early start) The Mosaic City Inn was excellent. Day 2, visit Mount Nebo then drive down to Petra on the old road, stopping at Karak and Shobak castles on the way (if you're tight for time then do Shobak only, the traffic in Karak was terrible) This got us to Petra for 6pm in time to do the "Petra by Night" tour... well recommended, we didn't book, simply walked to the entrance of Petra and bought our tickets. We stayed in the Petra Palace, it's a reasonble hotel, comfy beds and a nice enough bar but the breakfast wasn't up to much.... there's a Movenpick that's closer to the entrance to Petra and has a nice cave bar and restaurant if you have the budget. Day 3, Petra all day, walked in to watch the dawn come up over the treasury then stayed all day, used the donkeys to get to some of the high places, the rest we walked... we had a guide and I really would not recommend Petra without one, there's little information available and you'd lose so much of the experience without the guide's tour. Stayed overnight again at Petra Palace Day 4, drove over the mountain road (106km with around 40km of smooth gravel) to the Dead Sea and used the day access public beach to float around for a while (take a newspaper for "that" photo) before moving on to Bethany by the Jordan (the baptism site) there's no option but to do a formal tour here, but it's a good one, taking you to the banks of the river where you can talk across the water to the tourists on the Israeli side. Then drove on to Jerash and stayed in the Olive Branch hotel for the night Day 5, Went to the ruins at Jerash and walked around, there's a guide available here but we didn't bother, a self tour is easy enough. remember to buy your ticket in the little shopping arcade before the ruins proper... there's nowhere at the ruins to buy one! (you buy them from the little window on the left side just as you're exiting the arcade, there are no signs to tell you this!) Then drove back to the airport and flew back to DXB. A few general things to note..... if you only have 3 days then I would cut Jerash from the plan, I'd also make sure you stay outside of Amman on the first night or you'll lose acres of time in the rush hour in the morning, just go straight from the airport to the Citadel and leave Amman afterwards. The mountain road to the dead sea will cut some time off your route, but if you're not confident drivers then go the tarmac long way round... you could also chose to drive to Petra on the new highway, that will take half the time of the old road but is a bit bland! Best of luck, any more questions just yell. There are guides at the Amman citadel who will accompany you on your whole tour, they charge a certain fee per day plus a tiny amount for expenses, we met a few tourists last trip who had done this and it worked well for them.

Wonderful, thank you!! Now I'm excited to try this rather than scared. LOL What do they sell at the (daily) Friday bazaar? Is it worth stopping for? Kavsmum, where would you suggest we eat in Fujairah? I thought maybe we could stop for sandwiches at Subway and head to a nice beach park. Any suggestions? You could do that, we normally go a little beyond Fujairah itself to the Rotana hotel at Al Aqua (just stay on the main road out of Fujairah and you'll hit it after 47KM (GPS 25.509098,56.362524) This route will take you past Badiyah mosque (the oldest in the UAE) through Khor Fakkan and past the famous Snoopy Island as well. Last week we took a picnic, intending to stop at Wadi Wurayah, unfortunately we discovered that the Wadi is closed for environmental reasons, so we ended up picnicing by the sea here (25.465691,56.360861) this is a new lagoon that's been made with a nice road to the end. The Friday bazaar is worth a look around, our guests normally enjoy it, not sure I'd stop everytime though.... however on your way home you will see fruit and veg sellers at the side of the road and they are worth stopping at, just remember to haggle!!

Without wishing to be too negative, remember that it is possible to smuggle all kinds of things inside an animal and once you add the dog to your ticket you are responsible for it...... This is no different than agreeing to take a stranger's suitcase on a flight and we've all heard the stories around that subject. It's a lovely scheme and I wish you all the success but personally I'd be erring on the side of caution.

Thanks ladies, some food for thought there. Will take a look at these options and see where we go... I know that IB is a non starter as she wouldn't cope with the workload (we looked at Jess @ the ranches earlier on and that's IB only)

I would strongly recommend Al Jazeera Flowers Trading (055 942 7997) they recently completed a lot of works at our villa in Meadows and were excellent. You have to keep on top of them of course (like any company here) but they were hard working, clean and tidy and the owners (2 brothers) speak perfect English so are easy to instruct if you want anything complicated. They are also pretty good on price I think but we used them simply because DH got a good feeling from them when they visited to estimate.

No need to stop and ask.... this is possibly the most simple of routes. We did it with DHs parents 4 days ago. As noted earlier, take the E44 towards Hatta and Oman, follow this road until you come to the roundabout with the Hatta Fort hotel on it. Approx 800m past the roundabout take the left turn signed to Huwaylat (GPS 24.819185, 56.142368) Follow that road until another roundabout, turn left (the right turn just goes to Huwaylat itself) After a while you'll hit the E102 (main Sharjah - Kalba road) Turn right to Kalba When you hit the junction with the E99 simply turn left and after a little while you will be in Fujairah If you need any more GPS coordinates or suggestions of what to do over on the Eastern Coast then feel free to shout, we spend most of our free time over that way as it's so pretty.

As far as driving round goes, just pull up to the security gate and say a street and villa number that sounds genuine... the security guys in Meadows (I live there) are more interested in stopping the gardeners and other workers than they are in anything else!

We got all excited with this year's travel supplement as 2 nights in Muscat this month and 2 nights in Jordan next month, both for 2 rooms could have been a substantial saving. We've ended up using no vouchers at all, they're based on the rack rate for the room which is crazy high and normally doesn't include breakfast. It was cheaper to pay for our stays than use the vouchers..... very disappointed.

No. The seller of the car must be present at the time of the transfer. The only way you could do this is if he transferred it into your name first (meaning you'd have to insure it etc etc) then you could sell it.

Give Mohammad a call on 050 858 6087 He's done all our removals over the years as well as many friends and is completely reliable, honest and, most importantly, careful. His cost I would think would be between 200 and 300aed though nowadays he just tells us that whatever we feel comfortable paying him is fine!!

We had cases of this in the nursery I work in recently. Sounds like your DD has one of the worse cases seeing as she has the ulcers in her mouth. The only way through it is to give her ibuprofen for the temperature and to ease any pain she is in. Also plenty of water and fluids. She won't feel like eating with all those sores. At least she is not contagious now though. Hope she is better soon and does not suffer too much.

I live in JVC, I don't drive, have a daughter and I also go to work on the Palm 5 days a week by taxi. The rents here are amazing for what you get. There are 4/5 supermarkets, laundry, doctors, dentist, pharmacy and taxi rank. Not bad considering. Taxi to MoE is only AED25. So quite good actually. I'm sure it won't be long before we get a bus service either.:)

We have worked out that putting the washing machine and dishwasher on in the evening saves immensly. We just did it as a trial, but seems to work :) If you need to water the garden, either do it very early in the morning or the evening. Otherwise it's just a waste of water.Hope this helps a little. Oh and turn off switches at the sockets when they are not being used.

It seems to be making a big comeback at the moment. Supposedly children unger 2 are ok because they have immunity from their mothers. Children aged between 2 & 10 are building up their own immunity so are more at risk of getting it.
