I think you're right continuing to breasfeed your baby. You cannot stop breastfeeding her if she doesn't accept other food. I had a similar problem with mine for 1/2 month(s). I continued breasfeeding her in the morning when she wakes up. Around 10, I give her a yoghurt. Then at 1, I give her vegetables purees, since she doesn't like vegetables, I give her one spoon of fruits puree or yoghurt plus 2 spoons of vegetables. I repeat the same process at 4/5. If she doesn't eat much, I breasfeed her. During the night, only breasfeeding. She prefers much better breastfeeding but I prefer giving her first vegetables, fruits and yoghurt and then add breastmilk if necessary. I completely agree with the persons who said that adults are different, so are babies. Genetics is also important. edited by KB75 on 26/04/2011

We have used Explorer for the past 2yrs. We pay 2200dhs/mth and that covers everything for the maid (them sponsoring her, providing medical insurance, flights home, etc). Unfortunately, she only gets 750dhs of that. I know that's absolutely terrible and I don't agree with it, but she was aware of that when she agreed to work for them and we do give her additional money when we feel it's appropriate. It was working for us at first - we liked the idea that if things didn't work out we'd just call the agency and get a replacement. Our first maid last 1yr 9mths before we found it necessary to get a replacement. Unfortunately, the replacements were ****!!! We have gone through a couple of replacements in the past 3mths. The reason they're so rubbish is because the don't really want to be maids to begin with and the agency didn't have anyone else available - so you just get what they have!!! Unfortunately, that's not working for us anymore! I'm now opting to go without a maid until I can find the right one. Which is not the perfect situation as I have 2 small children and expecting a 3rd. But I'm so over the hassle, that I'd rather go without than deal with the add stress everyday! (We'll see how long I can actually go without before going crazy :D Why have you decided after 1 year and 9 months that the first maid is not good enough.? What happened exactly? Sorry if I'm too curious but I really want to understand.

I have had Sri Lankan maids before - and have been burnt a few times. Filipina maids - maybe - but too many stories of those with "i'am here for you sit" that I give up ... Who knows - might change my mind. So thought I'd give an Indonesian maid a try ... Do you have a preference on nationality? No, I don't have any preference on nationality but was wonering why everybody has a preference. I put an ad in Expat Woman and all the maids who called me asked me first for my nationality. I don't like judging people according to their nationality and I don't even ask them what is their nationality. But, maybe, I'll do it too.

I would like to hire a full time maid through an agency who will sponsor the maid, will pay for her visa fees, holidays, health expenses and will be liable for her in the event she commits any offense. Could you please recommend me a good agency and give me if possible their contact details? Sorry for using capitals, I didn't mean to shout. Thanks in advance. edited by KB75 on 23/04/2011

I think it's better to see Dr. George Michaelidis at American Hospital (Dubai). He is very good, very nice and will not upset you for nothing. He's specialized in prenatal diagnosis.

Woke up in the morning to a crying maid who keeps saying she wants to go home. Spoke to the agenty - they will call their agent in Srilanka and send someone to her village to check if her accident stories were true - but this is not much use for us now. They will replace her but we will lose our visa money (only paid 2 working days ago!) She even asked to be taken to the Srilankan embassy. I don't understand. This lady is crazy - they'll probably put her in a shelter whilst in our home she's living in an en-suite bedroom! And I'm not going to give her passport back just like that? I dont know what to do now. Return to agency and lose visa money? Call embassy and ask them to take her away? What do you want to do else? I'm sure she's lying or she's crazy so better to get rid of her. What's the value of 6,000 dirhams compared to your serenity. Really, I lost much more than that with my former maid and I'm very happy now (much more than when she was at home). If I were you, I will just let my husband carry out all the necessary actions to get rid of her. Think about your baby, pregnancy and the delivery are tiring enough without having to add such problems in your life. Good luck

The law provides one ticket per year, and the sample contract used in Dubai provides that if you terminate the contract you have to pay one ticket + one month salary regardless the one year work is completed or not. But it's better to double check the contract and / or call the immigration or the labor office. I called them couple of months ago and they were nice and helpfull. But I was told in this forum that if she finds another sponsor then you don't have to pay the ticket.

Sorry, I don't agree. if you terminate the contract, then she is entitled to one flight plus one month salary. If she terminates the contract, then you do not have to pay her anything. You can check that in her contract. Regarding the deposit of 2,000 dirhams, you can recover it if you cancel her visa and she leaves the country or is under another sponsorship. Good luck edited by KB75 on 18/04/2011

Or, if you don't want to loose your money and think you can trust her with the baby, you can just be honest with her and tell her that you know that she's lying, and she has to stop that if she wants to stay here.

Hi Lucy, Of course, it's not genuine. I'm not even she's really married. I don't understand why you hired her after her former employer told you this story. But, I understand since I made the same mistake than you, I was too nice. Can you really trust her with your baby? Do you think you can let such a liar staying alone with your baby? My former maid was also lying a lot. I decided not renewing her contract at the end of the year or terminating her contract if I find a job because I couldn't trust her and I couldn't let her alone with my baby. But then, she began refusing to do the housework. I think that when an employee creates more problems than he/she resolves, it's time for him/her to leave. Have you ensured with the agency that they will replace her for free in case you're not happy with her. By the way, can you plase provide us with the name of this agency.

Just feel down in the dumps ...after failing once. Then I got alloted a teacher who goes on and on about how i dont know to control the wheel and says I will definitely fail in the next test ! I thought the instructors are meant to encourage you and correct your faults So I changed my instructor for the second last class and this teacher says my driving is fine and that I only need to be careful while lane changing . I should have probably skipped the last class but since I had paid I went for the class with the original teacher .Again she was on and on and now my confidence has taken a beating and dont feel like going to my driving test next thursday :( Do you think this teacher is fair or not? Do you think she's helping you to improve your driving skills? If not, ask for another teacher. Just be confident, I'm sure you will pass it next time.

Nimonemo, maybe it's peanuts for you but not for everybody and anyway it's up to you to decide what you want to give and what you want to keep. I always leave a tip but when a person decides to het himself/herself the tip, I ask for the change and then I don't leave a tip. edited by KB75 on 11/04/2011

I do not understand your post, even if as you say "over the years adds up quite a large amount" I am sure the guy in the florist shop need it more than me. Maybe, he needs it more than you, and if you're ok with that, good. But maybe others prefer decide themselves if they want to leave a tip or not.

You can explain to your son what will happen tonight. Just tell him that you have to leave tonight with his daddy and he will stay with a nanny but you will come back tonight too. For the nanny, I think you have to explain her that it's the first time that your son will be looked after by somebody who is not a member of the family, and what makes your son confortable.

Thank you, I don't know their exact name, I found their phone number on Internet and before going to visit the premises, I wanted to check if somebody knows this nursery here. In fact, I just need a nursery for few hours in a week. I'm looking for a job so sometimes when I have an interview, I need a babysitter for my baby. I don't want to disturb my friends so I decided to look for a nursery where I can send my baby for few hours. If I find a job, I don't know if I will continue with the nursery or find a nanny. But thank you for you list of questions, I'm sure I will use them.

But if her visa was canceled by her previous sponsor, how is she remaining in the country? Does she not have 30 days after cancellation of sponsorship to leave? The sponsor chooses to let her stay or not for 30 days after the cancellation of the visa. But since the employer remains responsible for her during the period following the cancellation of the visa except if he sends her back home or she's sponsored by another person, a lot of people prefer not taking any risk, including the payment of UAR dirhams 50,000 fine.

Regarding the UAE dirhams 2,000: what was your agreement on that? Is it a giflt, an advance? You should check the provisions of her contract. I don't understand why she would be entitled only to a flight home only one time per 2 years. I heard that only UAE citizens are authorized to give their maids one flight home per 2 years.

This subject has already been discussed in a recent post in the maid part of the forum. According to the maids contract, a maid is entitled after having completed 12 months to (i) 30 days holidays, (ii) one ticket home, and (iii) one-month salary. She can prefer being paid in cash the airline ticket. So, your maid is not entitled to 2-month salary for her holidays. You can do it if you want to but it's a gift. I think if she completed her one-year contract, then it's better to give her at the same time the one-month salary (corresponding to the paid holidays) plus her ticket. Regarding the gratuity, in my understanding, it's something which has to be paid at the termination of the employment contract, its amount depends on the lenght of the contract of the maid. Anyway, I am not sure that the maids are entitled to gratuity, maybe it should be checked with the Ministry of Labor when you terminate her contract.
