Hello. My daughter goes to Horizon International. I cant compare it to GEMS but I can give you a quick rundown. 22-24 kids a class. Classes up to Yr. 2 have dedicated TA's along with the teacher. I really like the environment for my kid and for myself. Most of the mums I have met are really nice and down to earth. I am not unhappy with my daughters academic progress. I come from the ICSE system so the topic based learning in UK PYP is a little loosey goosey for me but my daughter is thriving. She is not sporty at all unfortunately but there are loads of sport options in the school. Fantastic extracurricular program. The kids are offered internal activities that are taught by the teachers and are FREE! Her FS2 teacher was AMAZING. Her Yr. 1 teacher might not be as lovey dovey but its clear that she knows my child and her progress and she has 18 solid years of teaching experience. There are things the school can do better, but overall, I think its a pretty good school. I like that its small and the environment is quite nurturing. Hope this helps.

I personally think small earrings look lovely on little girls. Its surprising you can still put earrings into your ears. I had a second set too and they closed in a month! My little DD whose ears were pierced at 6 months, had a earring change at 2 yrs thanks to annoying grandma and one earring bothered her. So we removed it and that hole closed in 2 weeks! Now I have to re pierce and I am not looking forward to it.

We have been looking at properties for the last couple of months and here is my experience: In certain areas, all the agents know each other and which properties are empty. I have spoken with multiple agents for properties in our desired location and they all show me the same houses. So they all speak with each other and know which houses are on the market. Secondly, the market is DEAD. There is barely any movement and hardly any offers being made on properties. However, some sellers are still holding onto what they think is fair pricing. To be honest, at the moment, not too many people are buying. Based on my experience, a single agent is good enough. If there are buyers for the property all agents specializing in that area will know your unit in on the market. Also, if you desire a quick sale, the you may have to relook at your selling price. Looking at dubizzle or propertyfinder will not give you a realistic idea of how the market is moving. Hope this helps.

Hello. Most of the nannies say employer left the country. I definitely stress that I would like references before I interview. Since I work and the lady in question could be with my children for a short period with no supervision, I ask for a copy of the visa page that has the employers name. I have googled and messaged people in the past (and am glad I did.... heard horrible stories). The other option is to take a chance. Many people have found wonderful nannies without necessarily checking references.

Frankly find her rant quite offensive. I have two kids. We thought I would stay home but we have to pay ridiculous rent and school fees. We want our kids to live in a decent home (no we are not in a 5bed room house in Jum/ Umm Suq) and go to good schools. We want to give them the best we possibly can. I have to go back to work so we can possibly save for their future and ours. Its breaking my heart that I will have to probably leave my 2 yr old in day care till 5 and my 5yr old in after school club. What do I do? To the ranting lady, find another job.

Polio has NOT been eradicated. Small pox has... even then I believe some cases were reported along the border of two countries. Please vaccinate your child. Most vaccines have a deactivated form of the virus you cannot get the disease from the vaccine. Yes there can be reactions, but these are few and far between. Another thing, to those of us who are not scientists/ infectious disease specialist.... please make sure you get your information and facts from a credible source. Just googling something doesn't make anyone more knowledgeable... there is a lot of misinformation out there. Reading sites that have no scientific basis or credible evidence just freaks you out and gives you INCORRECT information. Make an informed choice by ensuring you are getting accurate and factual information.

I also go to Dr. Charles at California Chiropractic. I cannot recommend him enough. I was to go in for a microdiscectomy and didn't show up to check into hospital. Luckily another neuro made me do an epidural spinal shot and then I went to Dr. Charles. He helped me so much. I went to him weekly initially and then it was see how you go. This was 6 years ago. Just last month, my back went out again and I went to him. He helped so much. I have another session with him today because ...I messed up in the gym. He is very good. There is no treatment plan, no agenda!

Both my kids are preemies. My older one was 9 weeks early and spent 1.5 months in the NICU. Its hard... but it is now a distant memory when I look at my awesome 5 yr old! I went to many paeds and the one I liked the most is Dr. Samitha Rakjumar at Unicare. She has many many years of experience and was very good in dealing with my fears. I cant recommend her enough. She is practical, not an alarmist and very informed about early detection. I did go to a developmental paed.... no names mentioned here...she was very keen for me to bring the baby in for assessments and therapy, etc. My baby didn't need it.

Last year I called Horizon for FS2 in May (we just learned that we were moving) and the resgistrar told me the list was so long, I could register but the chances were not great. Call the registrar and ask about year 1. She can probably give you an idea about the waitlist, etc. My daughter goes to Horizon International. Honestly, I feel happy she got in and so far am very happy with the school. I THINK they have a waitlist too but call and ask. My daughter is in Yr. 1 and they are doing French and Arabic. I am not sure how intense the program is, I guess I will have to wait and see. So far, DD likes her Arabic classes. There are loads of after school activities! I really like that about the school. PE and swimming are part of the curriculum.

Is there an area you are looking into specifically? My daughter goes to Golden Gate and they have tied up with Yes Chef to cater for the kids. I think it costs about 1,800 for the first term and little less for the next two terms. The menu looked really good. Let me know you want to check them out. I can pass on their info.

Hello. Is anyone else considering Golden Gate Nursery for their kids? I really liked it a lot, but it is brand new. Would like to hear other impressions if anyone has visited! I really enjoyed talking to the teachers and loved the set up. I was amazed at how DD actually went to each classroom and wanted to touch and play with stuff (she didn't feel that way at any other place we visited).

I visited Golden Gate Nursery and was pretty happy with their approach to pretty much everything. I am also worried about my LO settling in. They said they would work with me on and I could bring her in during the run up to September term opening to make sure she was comfy. Hoping to get her registered there soon. THey also have 10k off their fees for the first year.

It irks me to be classified by nationality. I am Indian and my maids are not overworked or underpaid. In fact my current nanny is taking me for a nice LONG ride. But, that being said, I cant even call because of the nationality specifications. Hey Ho.... they miss out. Not only do I pay well.... I have a pretty relaxed home environment. Well good for your maid, I bet she will stay with you for the long term. I sincerely hope you aren't being sarcastic. Another couple of months and I am going to end up serving her breakfast in bed! I was serious about being taken for a nice LONG ride. That's why I am stressing about finding another, would have liked a PI but they don't seem to want to work in Indian households. :)

I loved the Taj Colombo. We had a room facing the sea and we walked to the Galle Face Hotel and had a drink and some snacks. The staff was so fantastic (we were travelling with our 2yr old and she was not allowed in the steak restaurant, they sent us the steak and a comp bottle of grapes to our room). Will def stay there again.

I agree with Lolacat. Am not sure what you are calling FS2 in an Indian Curriculum school. Do you mean LKG or HKG? Either way... from what I understand... based on the age ranges.... LKG = FS2. So if she is in HKG she would be age wise eligible for Yr. 1 in a British Curriculum school. I understand what you mean by school year, but its not a bad thing. The Indian school will get done in April and you will need an assessment by the British School and a school leaving certificate. British schools start in September..... so this would give your kid a LONG summer break. I may be wrong as Indian schools in Dubai may mirror the same timetable as the British School. Not sure of the Indian school timetables in Dubai. Now, with regards to the level. My daughter in FS2 is past the knowing phonics and is reading pretty well and now has started writing sentences with support. I find the British curriculum very focused on reading but not focused on math and numbers. Indian schools are focused on writing and numbers. The good thing for your daughter is that the reading and writing competency required at the British schools (atleast the one my daughter goes to) is a wide range for a year group. So if you shift your child, there will be children who are reading and writing well and also children who aren't necessarily doing it so well. At a good school, she will get the support she needs to catch up. Good Luck. Apparently its easier to shift from Indian to British but not so easy to shift back.

Thanks mum2girls. I appreciate the advice. A plastic surgeon did suture her head. The problem was, she was two and squirming when they removed her stitches and then the top of the scar reopened. They just pinched it together and taped it. She was terrified and I didn't want her under general anesthetic again as it took a while to wake her up and her entire face was swollen. I think a reversal is probably the best idea. Will definitely talk to the plastic surgeon. :). Heartbreaking to have to deal with this.

A thali is a full sit down meal. You sit down and they serve you (and keep serving you) until you are full. Usually thalis have loads of components: lots of different veggies, lentils, some snacky items, pickles, rotis, rice and dessert. There are a couple of good thali places in town. There is a yummy one in Meena Bazaar (cant remember the name). Govindas has a thali (there is one on beach road), Puranmal has a thali (again, one of beach road) and there is Rajdhani in Bur Dubai. There are South Indian thalis too, I am not too familiar with where you can get a great South Indian thali unfortunately. Finding good paneer in Dubai is not easy. I don't use the frozen stuff and the so called fresh stuff is tough. In India, we buy paneer from a dairy and it is so soft that is just falls apart. Haven't found any paneer like that in Dubai yet.

Hello. Hello Ladies. My 5 yr old DD has a long scar on her forehead from an awful gash she got at 2yrs old. She needed stitches and it runs from her eyebrow to the middle of her forehead. When she is not frowning or raising her eye brows, it is thinnish white line, but it does pucker quite badly when she does frown or laugh. Does anyone know of any technology out there that might help with flattening it out or reducing the appearance of the scar? My husband is very bothered by it and frankly obsesses about it. I personally don't really care as its just a scar, but I am quite fed up with his ranting. I am not keen to do a scar revision and put her through a surgical procedure. Any ideas or advice? Thank you.

I have about 18 people or so and ordering from the usual suspects (Seville, Tapeo, etc) is v expensive! Anyone know of a good caterer who will be willing to make paella for the evening? TIA

Know someone who did it through a travel agent and it was done in 5 days. Also know that it is a pain in the behind to get in touch with the maid once they are there. Am looking for a good maid to replace my currently losing her mind maid. I'd be interested.

Always wanted two. Having a sibling is nice but its not the reason we have our second. I love my two to bits and would love one more (but I have ridiculously hard pregnancies and after two preemies with no complications so far... I don't want to tempt fate). In response to the previous thread... yes my life is on hold. I have loads of weight to lose, am a disorganized mess, my career is on hold, we have had to make some compromises, but, I cant imagine not having my second cutie pie. I seriously wish we could easily have and afford a third.

I agree with posters that 12 months is enough notice. You know you are going to move out and you have loads of time to start looking for a nice place. Additionally, extreme greed aside, what is wrong with LL's expecting market rents for their place? I rent out our house and haven't raised the rent in a while. That aside, I actually do want to move into my own place (moved back to Dubai in Aug), but can't as I have to give 12 months notice! Is that fair? So its ok for them to pay less than the market and its ok for them to be in my house for a whole year while I pay higher market rents and cant even live in my own place!

On the flipside.... I am Indian and have attended the best private schools in India and one of the Top 15 liberal arts colleges in the US. Its really upsetting looking at ads that wont allow me to apply because of my nationality. Finding something in my required salary range is almost impossible for me.

Cant recommend Dr. Elsa enough! She was wonderful as I unexpectedly delivered very early and she was so lovely with me and also checked on my baby in NICU during her rounds. The second time around, I was in India and had issues! She accommodated me for a last min apt when I was in Dubai n a visit and had some amazing advice. She also responded to my messages from India when things were tense. Her bedside manner is fab and she is very honest about things which is something I really appreciate. Long waits and sometimes tough to get appointments. She is worth the wait.

Went to an old friend's sons 5th birthday. Loads of kids, small space, she didnt turn on the AC's until her husband came home from work and turn them on! She had organized NO entertainment for the kids (i mean no games or anything) and was walking around in sky high heels and a floaty floor length dress! Kids were bored and restless and eventually she just put in a DVD to keep them entertained. Was not worth the 1 hour cab ride to attend with my poor 2 yr old who just screamed all the way home!
