I've been in Dubai for 7 years and two of my greatest wonders about the place are why there are not pool fencing suppliers/DYI materials everywhere and why there do not seem to be any childproofing stuff for balconies. This looks a fabulous idea and I wish you all the best in finding one! And may you inspire others too! There are too many tragic "fall" deaths each year.

Personally I'd bite the bullet and do it straight. It' won't be fun, but it is only 14 hours of your life give or take. I travel between Aus and Dubai (15 hrs) regularly with little ones, and really, I think the whole getting on/off/luggage/security thing of a stopover makes everything 10 times worse. Unfortunately your baby is probably at the worst possible age - too young to be easily distracted/entertained and too mobile to want to sit still!. I don't say that to worry you, but if you get on the plane knowing you'll have challenges, you can be ready and hopefully minimise your own frustrations which should in turn help to keep your son as calm as possible. My only other advice is if at all possible, do a night flight. There's less stimulation when the lights go down, less people moving about and with a bit of luck, he'll sleep for some of it. Keep finger puppets/stories/little toys at hand and breath deeply, remembering that it is only 14 hours of your life! Don't let others upset you. He's a baby. As long as you're doing your best to keep him happy and busy, you've every right to be on that plane - however it finishes up going.

Top loader, top loader !!!!! I soooooooo hate my front loader. Top loaders are faster, you can add clothes as you go. The only disadvantage is they use more water. Sorry, I'm not green enough to care when presented with a faster wash which is just as good as a front loader.

I had a great result from whipped shay butter with argan oil which I got from the RIPE shop. Its quite thick but really helped. DD has just turned 2 and seems to have grown out of it, but I had alot of improvement with that cream before now.

I've only ever visted Pattaya, and would strongly suggest finding another locality away from the main tourist area. The main tourist industry is S*X, and underage s*x at that. Signs such as "youngest boys in town" turned my stomach and we left early. That said, Thailand is wonderful with a capital W. You'll find somewhere close and it has soooo much more to offer than places like Pattaya suggest at first glance. Take more than the weekend if you need to.

Although you need to be careful with the "slide factor", which will depend on the cake shape, it's easily done the night before. I put mine in a small room with the air con on high and leave the cake uncovered ( fondant will sweat as the temp changes).

Four years ago I tried to cross the border near Jebel Hafeet with a male friend here on a tourist visa. I was in my husbands car and was not allowed to cross until my husband came in person to assure them that he was aware I was leaving with a man I was not related to! Silly me not thinking of that one ahead of time, but nonetheless it was a bit of a shock.

Shivi, how did you get a June appt? Is perhaps Spain your main country of stay or arrival? I'd really appreciate if you could let me know how/where you checked for those dates. We have four people checking the website everytime they get a minute to see if we can "jag" a cancellation slot, so we're pretty sure someone is checking the system every ten mins or so and there's still nothing till the end of August? mum2girls, apparently the system changed at the end of last year - hence no VIP, walk in appts or ability to apply via the embassy of a Shengen country with a shorter wait list if you really are going to France :( You're right though - perhaps just bowling up is worth a try - it's rare you get a consistent, correct answer here!

I asked if we could pay a premium service fee and they said no. More for VIP/express no. I asked to be on waitlist for a cancellation - they said no, you have to just keep checking the website and going through the process of trying to "catch" an earlier date when you "reschedule " your appointment. Talk about a needle in a haystack there! The earliest appointment is now 26th August. After that three weeks processing ( although I'm sure we'd be quicker as we've all travelled in Europe before on relatively recent Schengen visas) before we get the visa - we'll be back in teh school year by then!!!. I mean with appointments being made so for in advance surely there are many who do't bother to formally cancel? How can I capitalise on a cancellation? Apparently I can't :( We're going to give it a week, to see if we get a cancellation then find something else. If anyone has any ideas or successful experiences, I'd be really appreciative. edited by Kooky on 11/06/2013 edited by Kooky on 11/06/2013

There's a sharp pain which lasts 3 - 4 seconds, maybe less. I was really stressed about it as they were talking painkiller options etc. i went without and was glad I did. It was nothing, really. I had a few cramps after - just like normal pre-mestrual cramps, and that was it.

Hello ladies, can someone with cabin layout knowledge please advise the best seating configuration for our family? We have 7, 4 & 2 year olds and will be flying business class with Cathay Pacific on an Airbus 330. DH will be with me on the way over, I'll be on my own on the way back. We are currently booked in a row, but the seating plan on the website looks like there is a petition between the two middle seats. The 7 & 4 year olds are independant, but I want to keep an eye on the little one. What to do? TIA

Sorry JPS, just got back to this! I haven't had surgery with him, just medication. I guess I have a level of confidence in him as he was recommended to me by a medical professional I respect. Then once seeing him, he was very confident ( and very right) about my treatment. He never hurries his appointment with you and is always available (by mobile) if you have any emergency concerns. Good luck with your treatment.

I always forget to check this before I leave but the staff on board are always happy to give you one if they have one spare. Best bet would be to call ahead and try to preorder it. Even if you can't or they say no, the staff have been great finding fruit and extra bread etc to keep my little one happy. That said, I always travel with plenty of snacks too!

Just to add, DO NOT give her an inside room. This from someone who has a lovely maid, no issues, but for both her and I - it's awful. Neither of us has privacy, she's not comfortable having visitors over, I'm not comfortable on my couch, wondering if she's likely to "pop" out of her bedroom at any time. We have no other option in the place we are in now, but it has really changed our lives and our relationship with our maid. :(

I can't help you with the paperwork you're looking for, but I think it's entirely reasonable to ask if she's on or off premises. It's not like you're asking specifically WHERE she is, and what about your privacy? You of course want to know if there's someone in your home or not ........... Ask her about her thoughts on that!

I'm very sorry to hear this, it's a terrible worry. I can recommend Dr Deeb Kayed at Open MRI for Spine, ( also at City Hospital on some days). He was originally recommended to me by someone with more than 20 years in radiology here in the UAE.

I would not withdraw, but would "helicopter" if necessary to be sure he wasn't submitted to such behaviour. People will tell you mind your own business, but your business is your childs welfare. Nothing wrong IMHO to kindly point out the repercussions of their behaviour to the "bully" child and/or the accompanying parent.

Thank you for that kiwisipiers. I'll try to hold giving him a bottle until 6 weeks. I'm very new to motherhood esp breastfeeding so I really appreciate all the input. At the end of the day it's what's best for baby that really matters. I still can't wait for my Ameda Lactaline to come though. I'm always engorged and leaking, I feel like the milk is going to waste. So now I'm just planning to pump and store until 6 weeks. Fabulous idea. Get your freezer supply up if you can. It takes an enormous amount of pressure off is you have some stock ready to go. And can I please reiterate DO NOT judge the amount of milk you are producing by the amount you are pumping. Babies are MUCH more effective at getting milk out than any pump!

I recently had DD checked at the medical clinic at Dubai Mall. Unbelievably I can't remember the name of it!! But it was very well equipped with proper soundproof rooms/ testing equiplment etc. She was assessed by an audiologist after a referal from an ENT. I don't think you really need the referral and I'm pretty sure the audiologists name was Sonia. Perhaps its worth a call if you know where I mean. If not, give me a day and I'll dig out the details. Edited to add it was covered by our insurance no problems. edited by Kooky on 12/05/2013

My kids are there. I'm also very happy. We've had wonderful teachers and the facilities are great. I'm no schools expert, but my children are happy and the school responded extremely well to the one issue we had (social) with my daughter. My SIL is a teacher and was very impressed with the curriculum covered when she was here visiting. No complaints, but perhaps if you have any areas of concern you could list them and I'll happily comment on my experiences.

I've used them both. I'd definately go for the Ameda. It's a closed system pump, so more hygenic and obviously a double pump as well. Honestly, if you do any significant amount of pumping you'll regret buying a single pump.

This is one of those parenting areas where opinions will vary wildly and you really need to take a look at all approaches and decide what sounds right to you. I did baby led weaning and allowed my children to lead the way with solids as they wished. They never had purees at all. Also, I lived by the motto "food (solids) under (the age of) one, are just for fun" ie almost all their nutritional needs can still be met by milk ( with the exception mentioned below) and eating is more a developmental thing. Personally I would give the milk first and then let baby explore solids. Taking the pressure off and being sure they're not hungry will avoid the dinner battles! Do make sure you offer meat as baby needs more iron than milk alone will give ( about the only exception to the "food under one" advice above! I gave it as a lamb chop for baby to gnaw on. If you're not comfortable with that approach, you can puree any form of food with iron in it. I would however, strongly suggest that you stay away from rice cereal completely. There is absolutely no nutritional value in it at all - all you are doing with it is filling up babys tummy with glug. If you want to go the puree route, give pureed food with nutritional value.

GA and some of the other ladies have touched on my own sentiments, but can I please add, that friends who are not around for you in times like these, are not really friends and you should try not to let their apathy hurt you more. It's hard work making new friends, (not to mention a new life!) but it is a chance to start afresh with more positive and supportive people in your life. All the best to you and your little ones. They are going to have a much happier life when the dust has settled and you should be proud of yourself.

Do you know about Bubble Bums? I bought two here from an online retailer They are inflatable booster seats. They meet all european safety standards, and deflate to fit in your hand bag ( OK, big handbag, but seriously, a hand bag). Personally I think it's the best option as you carry them with you, and then have them to use during your trip an are not at the mercy of taxis/hire car companies to make special arrangements. Fabulous solution, assuming the toddlers are old enough to use booster seats rather than full blown car seats.

It's certainly not an issue in Dubai as long as you are legally married and legally in the country - ie visit/tourist visa, whatever. Did it myself so I'm 100% sure.
