It's your decision, but the reason they are recommended as a single user pump is that there is the possibility that milk can travel down the tubes and into the pump itself where there is no way to get it out/clean it. Even if the pump was only used once, there is a possibility ( not necessarily a likelyhood) that it could have happened. There is a pump available here in Dubai called the Ameda which is a "closed system" ie milk can't get into the pump part. It's sold direct to clients by the distributor and used to cost less than the basic electric Medela, although I understand the price has recently increased.

If it's specifically fingers and doors or drawers you're worried about, a quick easy way is to slice vertically into a section of "pool noodle" and slide it over the door/drawer. it quickly stops the drawer closing fully and can be removed in an instant with no damage :)

I have a fab book I got in Australia called "Where did I come from". It's cartoon based, and written apparently to a 7 - 8 year old target market. I've actually used parts of it already with my then 5 year old. I just used the pictures, not the text, as the text, whilst carefully written, covers the lot, which at that time, I felt was still too much! I've have the book now though, ready and raring to go at the first question!

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond ecochic. Can I just clarify, is the crate for punishment or to focus his attention? I'm an inexperienced dog owner, but the idea of a crate seems cruel to me (no criticism intended, I've just never seen it done before I moved here). Other random little questions, when you say lamb bones, are the bones of say chops ok? or just the big bone from a roast? I'm not really sure how long to wait outside the door. He'll often bark and bark, then stop for a few minutes and then start again/ When you say come in immediately, I'm kind of worried he'll think its to reward the barking he's just finished! Will he really recognise that I'm happy he stopped? Again, thanks for your time, I really appreciate the benefit of your experience - we don't want to lose him to the pound due to neighbours complaints.

Thanks ladies, I'm sure it's not loneliness as he does it when we're home too although it can't hurt to leave the tv or radio on. I have no idea how to pinpoint why he's doing it - might be time for a professional! Do they come to your home to see the dog "in action" so to speak? Will post on the pet forum as well.

Our new dog is barking excessively when we are out. We leave him toys etc and don't leave him long, but he just barks and barks. He also barks at new people, strangers passing etc. We have some tips we're trying for his barking when we are with him, but what about when he's alone? Why's he doing it? Can we change this?

I'm sorry for your loss JackieBrown and admire the way you've been reaching out for information. You sound like a rock for your children and I just hope you also have the support you need. I lost my mother when I was just 6. Younger than your children, but I will say that I understood a lot more about the situation than any of the adults around me realised. I resented the way they sugar coated/lied about things - really it made me uncomfortable with any references to my mother at all and made me doubt the adults whom I should have been able to rely on.

You hear so many horror stories, and see so many irresponsible drivers I felt sick with it, but actually they were great. I hope you get some feedback from "out of mirdiffers" too.

No, there's a government rule - it depends if the days are consecutive or not. I think it's something like 25 days or 21 consecutive days. Interestingly though, it just means that the school is not obliged to take the child back/offer a place in the next year level - ie they can make the child repeat. I've had my kids out longer (a GEMS school) and whilst I did have to explain why, there were no problems.

I don't think the point of water babies at such early ages is to actually teach the babies to swim independently. It's about building water confidence, so they are ready to learn when they're at an appropriate age. Two of my kids did the program, and could swim across the pool at 2 years old. I started them both at three months and certainly didn't expect them to actually swim themselves at that age. Personally i thought the program made the water activities fun, and did a good job of gradually introducing water skills. I've seen many kids whose parents left it till three or four before starting and those kids were really quite intimidated.

There's a medical supplies place that rents all manner of equipment on the road that runs from Al Khail rd to SZR near MOE. Sorry - I've forgotten the name of it, but it's on the Old Dubai side of the road and you can't miss it if you're looking for it. It's really a very large place, with a great range of equipment. Perhaps someone else know it and can give clearer directions!

There's nothing in ski gear in small sizes in Decathalon or Go Sport. I did see a lovely suit in the Ski Dubai shop, but I warn you - it wasn't cheap - 600 odd dhs. That said, you probably don't actually need SKI gear which might open other option - we're looking for the same thing, but need it waterporrof.

I didn't get a chance to respond but I worked with a lady who was able, as a single parent, to sponsor her son (she was never married) from a 3rd country. She had a lot of hurdles to get over and our organization's HR and PRO were very good and helped a lot. I don't think she could have managed it all alone though. I"m not sure what the original thread was about, but I met a lady once who'd done this. Her husband had abandoned her.

thanks ladies. The company hasn't formally offered - DH was just speaking with a long term person in the accounts/finance department who told him that people have requested it b4 and it was approved. It came up in a discussion about how it can be hard to get ahead financially here/debt levels at home. Apart from potentially starting the calculations as if he's a new employee again, I"m just trying to see if there's any downsides we haven't considered.

My daughter (also 6yo) loved it. I thought the exercises were great, lots of fun and very colourful It was however a little difficult to navigate between the exercises themselves and to log in each time. It's not really something they can do at this age on their own (although they're not far from it). On balance I'd do it again, but our school pulled the special offer and to do it as a one off client is REALLY expensive. Can you do a months trial or something and see how your child goes?

My personal opinion is buy yourself a comfortable sling or wrap ( the ladies at Dubai baby wearing can help with advice) and roll with it. Your baby wants you for comfort and reassurance and there's nothing wrong with that. Just make sure the carrier is big enough for your husband to share the load - literally! Lol

Honestly, almost everyone I know (myself included) has had their baby fall off something. I think it's natures way of reminding us to keep on our toes! 1.5 feet is not actually very high. Babies are very bouncy and barring the symptoms listed below, there's unlikely to be a problem. Try not to beat yourself up. It's the first in a loooong line of mistakes you're going to make as a mum, and learning is all about doing something about them from here on in - not berating yourself! edited by Kooky on 31/01/2013

How strange to see this thread here this morning, I did share Nippy's story with my DH, and only last night he asked me how she was doing. I'm glad to hear it's well, although I understand your feelings about "asking" for benefits and reiterate that that is what community is for - supporting you in your time of need. You say you've always made your own way - then you've paid taxes, relax, it's not charity, it's support. Good luck to you and your lovely children. edited by Kooky on 28/01/2013

This was backed up by DD's 14 year old friend dying in the front passenger seat last week :( The only survivors were in the back seat) How terrible. How are the kids taking it? OK now, but the weekend and the first few days at school were very hard. It happened right outside where we live and there are still personal belongings at the site so it's a tough reminder. oh goodness, I'm so very sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with all involved. Terrible.

I can honestly say, that I look back on the whole process of getting pregnant, being pregnant and delivering, with a bit of resentment at the rest of the world and the medical world in particular. I lost our first child at 36 and the pressure others put on me (intentially or not) to "hurry up", time's running out, get on with it etc etc put such a terrible sense of importance on every cycle, every test etc etc. Thankfully by baby 3 I'd realised that my body is strong, perfectly capable of all that's required of it. I came out of the experience with many certainties and convictions but the most relevant to this thread are - never ever ask about anyones pregnancy wishes. Who's to say they're not trying, haven't just lost a baby or are having trouble getting both partners on the same page - I mean, what business is it of yours anyway? All you can possibly do is invite someone to explain/justify themselves and you could well put doubt in their minds. -I really, really wish I'd been able to relax into my age as it relates to pregnancy for the first, like I did for the last. My words about great pregnancies and great deliveries are true, not written here to encourage any of you particularly. The best thing you can have is confidence, and ladies, there is no reason you shouldn't have it. You can fall pregnant, and when you do, you can enjoy it and child birth and motherhood can be wonderful. Don't let others make you doubt of feel stressed. One of my gyneas had only ONE client younger than 30. The world needs to get over it's obsession with young mums!

This is something that I saw last summer in the USA and I thought it was a great idea. My neighbor was wearing a walkie-talkie that had a range of a mile or two. I don't know exactly. Anyway, his daughter was wearing the other one. She was allowed to go around the neighborhood on her bike with friends but her father could hear every word that she was saying. This way, she was allowed freedom but could never go too far and her parents were aware of what was going on. Great idea!

Jaundice doesn't necessarily have anything to do with milk intake (although dehydration does). I highly recommend Dr Delphine Dupuis who is a GP as well as a qualified lactation consultant. I know you've asked for recommendations for two others - I have used cecile too, but feel Dr Delphine was better for this particular issue. I was thinking last night, if you're up for a bit of juggling, try feeding your baby on one side WHILST you pump the other. You'll be amazed at how much more milk you get in the pump as baby will be helping to stimulate your breast and therefore milk supply, in a way a pump simply can't. It's not easy, but may be a way to give you confidence in the advice you've been given here. Pumped milk is in no way an indicator of milk supply. I hope you get to see Dr Delphine or someone else qualified (ie not just a midwife) soon - with a bit of help ( and we all need it at times) you should be able to exclusively breast feed.
