Hi Lou86, I'm afraid I'm not very adventurous with food on my fast days! So far I have been having either an egg scrambled and cooked with a teaspoon of olive oil or 1 oz of porridge for breakfast with 100ml of soy milk and water + 30gm prunes, or a yogurt and the evening meal tends to be a small can of baked beans on 1 slice toast! Totally uninspiring I'm afraid but working for me, and I keep it simple so that I'm not thinking about it. I eat lots of fresh veg and fruit the rest of the week so am not worried about the lack of it on fast days. I have experimented with eating times, what seems to work well for me is to leave it as long as possible after waking before the first meal and then eat again about 7pm, so 1pm and 7pm, although on my last fast I had my porridge breakfast at 8am and then had an egg at 7pm. I think it's just a case of working out what suits your lifestyle, I have to keep milk in my allowance for tea as I need to be able to have a cup of tea!! From a personal point of view if you minimize the preparation/disruption to your day and eat what you would class a 'normal' meal, (just a lot less of it) then you won't feel as though you are on a 'diet'! Good luck! (Am also no where near as hungry as normal on non fast days, so odd....)

I've just completed the 6th 'fast', 3kg lost so far so am delighted! The fasts were easy to follow the first week, hard the second week and this week I have just done them without really thinking about it so maybe its getting easier.....?! Who knows! But, if I can lose weight like this, no faffing around, eating (within reason) what I like the rest of the week then it will be fantastic. I have mostly kept my non fast days under 2000 cals but quite close to 2000 and 1 day was definitely not under 2000!! So, am keeping on with this at the moment....anyone else?

Excellent, Iconic band and so great to have been able to see them. As previous posts, nightmare getting in and out of the venue and so many smokers!!!! Really spoilt it for me being surrounded by smoke, even at at an open air venue, tried moving to different locations but it was the same everywhere.

Hi, just a quick thought - I'm not sure but have a feeling that there is a rule here in Dubai that your children have to have completed their previous school year, so they would need to complete their present years until the end of term prior to the paperwork being aceepted by the KHDA. Am not 100% certain but it may be worth checking that one out in case you run into extra hassle trying to get school places. The registrars at the various schools you will be applying to should know the answer. Best of luck.

Hi Sugarcakes, I know exactly how you are feeling, was in your exact position 16 years ago, with an 18month old and a 4 year old! We took the leap and it has been great, lovely place to bring your kids up and they are not going to turn into expat brats unless you let them! Ours have enjoyed being here, our eldest is now back in UK at University doing well so we can't complain about the schooling at all. Having said that it is a bit of a 'bum fight' to get places in the British Curriculum schools at the moment. It is not easy to find work for yourself around school hours here, it can be done but just isn't easy. Living here is what you make of it, there are many opportunities to see and do lots of different things but you have to go out and find them all. We have enjoyed it, I miss the 'green' but not the 'grey and rain', well maybe a bit of rain would be nice sometimes! Good luck!

Hi Monnie, I had a similar situation with my daughter a few years ago - she had a shocking year 7 being bullied by a lot of girls in her class. She became withdrawn and defensive but was also determined not 'to give in' as she saw it. After a lot of e-mails, meetings and pushing by us as her parents - who according to the school, 'obviously didn't understand school issues etc etc', we finally got her moved into a different class which changed her life totally and she has enjoyed school ever since. W e were polite and and worked with the school who were making us feel as though we were being over protective parents, however we persisted, politely but firmly that this wasn't good enough. Had they not moved her or had the situation not been resolved by moving class we would definitely have moved her into another school, probably against her wishes! However it was affecting her life too much and school days are so important in shaping their lives. She is also in a very good non profit school here in Dubai. In answer to your question I would suggest that if the school does not deal with it appropriately, move her, even if she is reluctant, she has some really important shcool years coming up - exams, gcse's etc. She doesn't need this extra stress now. Best of luck, such a difficult situation for you all.

Just in case there are any physics/maths teachers out there, would anyone be willing to do some private tutoring for up and coming AS Level physics exams?

I would agree, unless it is subjects that your children need and want to get top results in to compete for say a particular University place or qualification then no, take the pressure off them! The school should be doing their own job properly and for general exams there should be no need for extra tutoring, unless as mentioned, it is at a stage where they are competing for future places in further education - then it becomes a whole new ball game and should be instigated by the childrens desires, not the schools. Just an opinion, good luck! Education is such a minefield!!!!

Phew, don't like the sound of French hours!!! But, simpleasabc - I am Paul Kelly's latest fan!!! I would love to send those reports to the schools - agree re the lead ballon though!! In all seriousness I read a report last week in the Gulf News about the increase of diseases like diabetes in expats and locals and in children in the this area. It did highlight lack of sleep as being one of the triggers for many physical and mental health issues. I really do believe that having to get your children up around 5.30, 5.45am is ridiculous, common sense dictates it can't be good for them. The 'because of the heat' response always gets me when the kids are sent outside for PE and breaks around 11am, and after school netball, football, rugby at 3pm.....doesn't quite follow....but it has been bug bear of mine for many years now and I don't think it will ever change. It has been re highlighted to me recently as apart from all the other issues surrounding early starts, the roads since September appear to have gone crazy...lots of manic driving around, how much safer would it be for us if school started just a little later.....

I am very pleased all has worked out for you, I saw this thread this morning and could not believe the school would put students and parents through this, it is utterly ridiculous. We were also waiting for GSCE results on the 25th and to think we may have had another 3 week wait to know if his 6th form place was secure would have been a nightmare, definitely not the norm either here or UK. What a nightmare now for those who have not got a place! Can fully understand your feelings.

I'm on a wait list at a couple of popular schools for year 7 and have been told that there are usually changes over the summer, some parents hold places but for some reason or another may not return or take up the place. Is this accurate? Does anyone have experience of this? I'm not relying on it, just curious!
