Hello there, @comp99 - Yes, I thought to use the study as a bedroom but that still leaves a live-in with nowhere to go in the Spring and we can't not have a live-in with our baby and me needing to go back to work. We will need 3 sleeping spaces for Mom & Dad + 2 kids (one is a baby). @iamcristee79 - Yes, we need three bedrooms (or 2+study) PLUS a maid's room. You stated you could check your availability? Do you represent owners in the Springs or other developments? I can't give a total budget as my husband will decide that but I can say what we pitch in for rent above 120k a year (husband's housing allowance) we wish to keep minimal Ms. Lavender, I will be checking if we have availability as per your requirements. Thank you. I know that contacts can't be shared here but feel free to leave me a strong hint on your email :) I can try to guess.

A few things to add to the comments above: 1) So many teachers moving to the Middle East change their minds last minute. Keep your eyes open. 2) Check your certifications and degrees. You need to hold a degree in a subject area that you plan to teach (or a closely related field with an added teaching certification). "Closely related field" can always run into interpretation issues! Also... Make sure your degrees/certificates are from 'brick and mortar" schools. Distance education degrees are no longer accepted for any profession that requires a license in Dubai (medical, teaching, etc). 3) Visa: Processing your visa does not take a long time to process, in theory. The PRO who is drinking coffee might take a long time though to get you processed! (lol). If the school needed to, they would bring you in a tourist visa while they get your processed. Yes, legally, you are meant to wait to start working until you are processed. In reality? (lol). Be prepared to do "visa runs" at some schools 4) You will have local medical insurance, per the law. It isn't always great coverage and many schools will offer worldwide covered as "emergency coverage only" outside the UAE (especially if your home country is a place like the USA). If you sponsor your family, your family will only have their medical insurance covered by the school if they are "being nice." In other words, they are not legally obligated to cover non-employees that they do not sponsor. If they also sponsor your family, then yes, they are required to cover them. Can't speak to the tuition coverage. I think it would vary by school. Good luck!

I think anyone who takes issue with a kiss on their child's lips (at any age) needs to re-evaluate their thinking. Why would it be weird, ever? Now, slipping them the tongue would be disgusting and of deep concern but seriously... I think you stop when you feel like you should. I don't think I would make a point of leaning over to plant one on a grown son's lips nor do I expect that he would lean in either. I am guessing kids and parents (for the most part) stop doing that around puberty but it is of no concern to anyone else, in my opinion.

On a serious note... The is almost nothing you can't find in Dubai. You can shop from IKEA to the high-end. I wouldn't worry too much about bringing things from your home country unless there are certain specific requirements. Best wishes!

My advice is to not buy a bugaboo. ;) (kidding) I just think back to my first child. How much money I spent buying the "fanciest stroller" when she ended up in a $20 umbrella stroller a few months later. Of course..."Live and let live!"

Hi all, I have seen a lot of 2+study in the Springs but where to put the maid? Anyone is Springs who have solutions? The 3 bedrooms + maids are out of our budget in the Springs. If you know of any other 2 bedroom + study + maid's located in other developments let us know! We have a baby so she wouldn't need a large room for her and we thought maybe we could get a nicer place if we search for 2 bedrooms and a study vs 3 bedder. We do need space for a live-in though Thanks!

I'm fairly confident the answer is no. It does seem rather unfair though. I would double check. It might be that a man without children living in the home is a no, for sure. With children? Maybe...

Was the lock working when you moved in? Personally I would just fix the lock myself but that seems like a pretty high cost to fix a lock. I assume you were fine with a higher estimate of 1,000dhs as you figured the LL would cover it. If you don't get it fixed now (for as little as possible)...you better believe the LL will ding your deposit to fix when you move out

Thanks for your reply! They have given me a residency visa, so I wasn't sure if I should be covered by the new rules. :( In that case, does anyone know the best places to get cheap but decent cover? I've just enquired with Bupa and they quoted me $5,500 (USD!) which obviously I can't afford. Thanks x Consider travel insurance? About $3,000 a year. Bootsnall has insurance up to one year available. They also have the mandatory minimum which is like $200 a year. (about 750dhs). Doesn't cover much but it meets the requirement while you shop around.

And here i was sad that my maid came across slightly cold and unloving to my child. ;) Look, it really is pretty simple. Your personalities are just not well matched. I think it would be kind to allow her a chance to find another employer who is looking for this kind of constant attention for her child. We don't know what her background is. Maybe her former employer demanded constant attention from her. I have heard of children being delayed in walking because the parents instructed the nannies to never put the child down. Just look for a better fit. You will both be better off for it.

I really appreciate the insight and the advice. :) You are all so very helpful! I do like the idea of the lower price in Remraam as it allows money to go towards other things. Will be checking them out for sure. :) Have not heard of the "Gardens" before. A already developmened community in our range would be perfect. Will check them out! (This is exactly what I need. Ladies who know these places that I don't and can recommend!) My only concern with Mirdif is mostly not having any experience with that side of Dubai. Maybe we need to spread our wings a bit? We have spent years in the Barsha area and got used to it and all the close amenities within a 10 minute drive and shops that I know so well. I would not be adverse to a shorter commute time for my husband though! Couchpotato...Can you advise which areas of Mirdif you would recommend and/or developments? I don't think we could afford Sharooq and 140k is actually the high end of the budget. Thank you

Thank you ladies in advance! I have posted a few times about other areas so forgive me! We are searching all over right now to find a place for August. I saw the prices at Remraam are pretty good. I know its a bit "far out" but we have a car. Any advice? Range up to 140k for a 3 bedroom So far we are looking at: Layan (was told there may be openings soon as a company is moving people out) Remraam (prices seem good) JVC (some townhouses there are affordable) Mira (possible but not yet released and will be a while before we see green spaces) Mirdif / Sharooq (I think we are priced out though it looks so nice!) We prefer something that is not total construction. Some expats would be great! ;) Some green space for the children to play. Husband's work is near healthcare city. Pool would be nice. Ground floor apartment or townhouse for certain. Can you advise of other areas to look? I really appreciate it!

Our 3 bed apartment is around AED700 a month which includes the 5% tax ( annually 5% of the years rent) Hi Buddha! It was mentioned that there will possibly be a lot of openings at Layan soon. Can you advise of some of the upfront costs? Is there an agent fee for going direct? I reached out to another development nearby (handled by Emaar and soon to open) and they said using their preferred agent was required. That you couldn't avoid the agent. They didn't comment on if there was an agent fee. I am waiting for their reply. How is Layan handled? I thought there was a direct option. Do they charge for the agent fee? Are there maids rooms in the 3 bedroom apartments? PS: Thanks for sharing the Layan bill amount. Thanks!

Hi. You could consider Mira townhouses by Emaar which are down the road from Layan. A considerable number of villas will be handed over in August so you might get a good deal on them. The size and design is similar to the Al Reem townhouses in Arabian Ranches. Hope this helps :) Oh thank you!!!! This is EXACTLY what I need. The wisdom of all you ladies who are "in the know" and can offer advice. Much appreciated!

HI there, Looking at Mirdif this year for the lower prices. Need a 3 bedroom + maids. Can any of you recommend areas or developments in Mirdif? I am clueless and only have Google to help me. Looking for prices in the 130-140k range so this will remove some options. Would like very much to be around other expat families with kids. And be away from the air noise too. Appreciate any insights you can offer.

OK three quick questions: 1. British going into IB or Purely IB from the start: which is better? 2. Kindly suggest excellent IB schools based on your experience/knowledge (be it IB or British-IB) 3. My daughter is 31.12.12 born... Can I request KHDA for allowing her in year one in '17-18. Thanks ahead! In my opinion going IB from the start is easier on the students as they are very different styles of learning. Also, few schools offer IB from primary years which is known as PYP. I believe Dubai International Academy, the new Swiss International School and Gems World Academy offer PYP. I am sure a few others might. DIA is much less expensive, GWA is known for accepting more kids that aren't accepted elsewhere and Swiss is so new it is hard to tell but also one of the most expensive. My advice with such a young child is to let them enjoy themselves for the first few years and don't hyper-focus on curriculum or grades. Just my opinion.

Hi ladies We're back on DubaiEye 103.8 this afternoon to discuss all things travel and events! Today we plan on talking about at what age is it appropriate to take your teen's boyfriend/girlfriend on holiday with you? Have you done it before? Do you think it's okay to do without the boyfriend/girlfriend's parents? If you think it should definitely be a no-no, why so? Tell us your thoughts and we'll read them out on air from 2pm this afternoon! I am amazed that this type of discussion would occur on a public radio station during Ramadan. I can see on an expat forum or expat website but live on-air in the UAE? If anything, these types of discussions can only add to the disapproval that locals would have for expats about what it means to be respectful of their culture. I can't even imagine why this would be considered by either side. Now we are discussing if it is acceptable for CHILDREN (teens) who are in a romantic relationship aka DATING to go on holiday together? This is assuming that BOTH of these teens are residing in the UAE? So we tell our kids its ok to act one way in Dubai and another way outside of Dubai? What kind of message does that send to them? Pandora's box. Let me put it to you this way... My parents were amazingly liberal and we are from one of the most liberal countries on earth. They allowed my boyfriend to move in to our home when I was 15 years old. Yes, he had his own room and guess what? THAT DIDN'T MATTER! (Does anyone really think it would matter?) I learned a great deal from the mistakes my parents made and there is NO WAY ON EARTH that I would bring a child's teen boyfriend/girlfriend on holiday with me. Let me be clear. Each person should raise their children as they see fit and my opinion applies to my family, but I do hope that when my daughter becomes a teen that she would never ever dream to ask me!

Hello, There is a canadian nursery in healthcare city called KInderville Early Learning Centre. My 4yo son goes there and its a good one. You can contact them on 04 4201102 or google their website. Hope this helps ! I have noticed that they won't disclose their fees online. I sent an email message without response last week. (Noticed I have seen the website before). Any chance that you could share the fees? Just seeking a ballpark. This would be for a 1 year old and a full day. Thanks!

I'm shifting to another apartment and looking for another tenant for this apartment. The apartment will be available in the first week of July. Pls let me know if you would be interested. Hi there, My husband's new job is close to healthcare city and I am hoping to go back to work. We will not be living near there but I appreciate the offer. Do agents here in Dubai charge a viewing fee to see some of the properties ? Is it legal ? That sure is nerve!! So an agent who works for commission is actually attempting to charge the prospective tenant to show them properties? Or... are you saying they wish to charge the owner? Amazing. It's like the wild west in this industry!

It depends on the agreement which I think should be determined before the employment begins. Our family is fortunate enough to have the summers free to use for holiday in our home country. If we were to hire another nanny in the future, we would tell her as a condition of her employment (in advance) that her annual holiday will be during the summers when we are out of the country. Her primary role is to care for our child (who will be with us) so it makes more sense. She can choose to go home to her country at that time or stay in the UAE (or split her time). In fact...we would likely give her two months paid leave per year if we took the entire summer. Great deal for her IMO. It is about setting expectations. If her holiday needs to be in the summer she will be told in advance. It is her choice to accept the position at that point.

Working for the MOE is a good opportunity. It is not uncommon to be allocated housing on arrival as you will still need to pass your medical to be issued permission to reside here. You didn't say if they will put you in temporary housing until you find something. Yes, it is hot. Many (most) people working in education leave in the summer and you didn't say if your post was year-round. Dubai is a very easy place to live. I would not worry at all. That stated, if you are left wistful for your time in Japan this is nothing at all like living there! A totally new experience. Give it a try. You might find that you truly love it.

You need a minimum of a BEd or BA with a grad dip Ed. You specialised in one of Early Childhood, elementary! or High school teaching, This is the beginning only and will qualify you to teach in school here. To make a good career, you will then need teaching experience and a minimum of a MEd and finally a PhD in your chosen area of interest. Of course, all this from an accredited university My word! How many years are we talking? And do you recommend any uni's where I could do a BEd? I personally know quite a few teachers working in the international schools of Dubai. I have reached out to the KHDA myself to confirm qualifications. You only need to get the work visa: 1) A Bachelor degree in a teachable subject OR 2) a degree (BA or MA) in a [u'>related field [/u'>AND a teaching certificate. None of your degrees have to be in Education

My son is in grade 4 in DAA. Very good school . Maximum 24 kids per class and have never had any complaints with the school. Till grade 5 they have 2 teachers per class which really helps academically. The downside is that the facilities and the campus looks a little old compared to the swanky new schools that are opening. One of the two in the classroom is a teaching assistant. Not a certified teacher. Just wanted to clarify for other readers. I do think most schools have a "TA" in the lower grades in addition to the classroom teacher. At least all the schools I know of.

Both are good choices for different reasons. DAA is well established and SISD is a new school without a review on KHDA (that I could find). DAA is the American curriculum and SISD is a full-IB school. DAA/GEMS is run by a large corporation and SISD is the new kid on the block.I find the bi-lingual structure of SISD is very interesting as they switch the language of instruction back and forth in the main subjects. For those who do not want that track or their children are not already proficient in the second language (a requirement) SISD also has an all-English track where the main subjects are not taught bi-lingual but include instead an intensive daily foreign language classes. Our child went to DAA for 4 years and we were happy with them but we are going with SISD this year and are excited to see how it goes!

You are fine with it being a 2008. Mine is as well. It costs about $700 to ship from Jax, Florida direct to Dubai. If you hire an agent you can add another $500. I do think shipping your own car is cost effective if you like your car and trust its service history. Yes, you must have residency to clear it from customs and insure it so time the shipping right. The import tax is 5% of the value BUT I have also heard you can pay this as a deposit and get it returned if you export it again at leaving. So...why not? If you choose to sell you forfeit it (also 5%) so no loss but a possible gain. HTH!

Hi - I am planning on renting a car this summer in Canada and the US. If you pay for the collision damage waiver it usually increases the car rental price substantially. I wondered if any one had any expericence with separate car rental insurance like worldwideinsure or icarhire. It looks like icarhire insurance is only available for residents of the EU. Thanks in advance for any help. Many major credit cards will cover this at no charge as long as you a) decline the car company coverage and b) pay for your entire rental using their card. It is a standard benefit on most large bank cards (Citibank, Capitol one, etc). Check your cards and call the benefits sections.

A friend in Dubai has recently had a memo from his HR department. Basically it says that holders of Schengen country passports get a multiple entry visa entitling them to spend a total of 90 days in any180 day period in-country. If the passport holder spends 90 days straight in-country they must leave and may not return for 90 days. Holders of UK (not part of Schengen agreement), USA and other countries passports who are able to get visa on arrival continue to get 30 day tourist visa on arrival which can be extended in-country by 30 days once only. The memo made no mention of 'visa run' regulations. To add to your post and the confusion. The "standard" 30 days visa for USA is not hard and fast. It says right on the UAE embassy website for Americans that they "can request longer than 30 day by asking the immigration officer" when they enter OR getting an extension after the fact. So this (in my opinion) obviously means that an American should be able to ask for more than 30 days when they enter! http://www.uae-embassy.org/services-resources/visas-passports/us-citizens

On a side note, as a newbie to Dubai, I recommend you get travel insurance valid for arrival listing your home country as your "permanent country of residence." There is a company under the website: www.bootsnall.com that offers good coverage through several insurance companies. We got family coverage for 4 weeks for $275 with emergency evacuation to our home country and guaranteed payment up to $100,000USD for the standard and $300,000USD for the upgraded option. You can get coverage up to 12 months. It covers you anywhere outside your home country for all hospital and emergency including emergency dental. That will give you time to "like or lose" this other policy and shop around locally.

Hi all I am moving to dubai very soon. We have a private cover for health through my husbands job but I have been recommended by a good friend that it's always worth having your own policy too as companies change them all the time . I need a recommendation for a really comprehensive cover where I don't have to co pay to see a Doctor in dubai etc(even if it's for a cold/ throat infection for the kids ) Our policy with my husbands job has a 20% copay on it. I am looking for something to cover everything - even if possible vaccinations. Plus a decent dental and optics cover with the health insurance Please ladies can you recommend which company I should use ? Thanks! I could be incorrect but I thought you are not able to carry two policies in the UAE. Can anyone confirm this or knows otherwise?

So this means that after one year I could go home for a leave and I don't have to finish my 2years contact before I could avail it It does state "ANNUAL leave" so in my opinion this means your leave should be offered each year. Otherwise the contract would state that you are offered one month leave PER CONTRACT which in your case is two years. It is a shame that you feel that can't ask your employer. This makes me sad.

I am a bit confused by the reply, I have always choosen to work under my spouse visa and received labour card by the company, surly that gives you the same protection. I can see how that reply was confusing. 1) You can have your employment AND your residency sponsored by the employer OR 2) You can have your residency sponsored by your spouse who writes a NOC (no objection) and the employer handles only the employment aspect and obtains a labour card for you to work. Your residency however remains under the spouse. Benefits: You can't be banned when remaining on spousal sponsorship. Of course banning doesn't really apply to most with higher degrees and certain jobs titles anyhow. Negatives: It is possible (I am not 100% clear) that some perks "may" not be mandated if staying on spousal sponsorship such as the employer being required to provide you health insurance and flights. Hope this clears it up.

Maybe find some fun cartoons or educational shows that feature fruits and veggies. If she sees the characters eating them she might get more interested. You could also create a situation (one weekend) where you remove everything from your fridge and only put those items you wish her to eat in there. Then let her open the fridge and "explore." You may start to notice certain items she chooses to reach for. Make it the toddler's idea :)

I think this could be a great solution for those who wish to use their maid's quarters for other reasons (or wish to not have them in the home but don't want to pay for a live-out.) Also, using for a houseboy or driver is a great example. Can you offer the name of this product? I am not sure what to ask for so I can look online or Dubizzle?. I can check those places you mentioned as well. Can you advise of the estimated cost for something like this? Regards,

My contract states that i am entitled of 30days paid annual leave against the whole term of the contract What does this mean? Need answers please.... This is interesting and I would get clarification from the Department of Residency (DRND). 1) It could mean that you are only entitled to the 30 days leave per year if you complete the entire contract. In other words... If you were contracted for 2 years and got your 30 days leave in the first year but then left your employer during the second year before the end of the "whole term," they could recover that 30 days leave from your outstanding salary owed (or gratuity if paid) as it was only offered "against the whole term of the contract." or 2) It could mean that the 30 days leave is not included in the "whole term of the contract." In other words... if you are contracted for 2 years (24 months) and get 30 days leave per year... you cannot subtract those 30 days from the year you worked. It could mean that you must work for 12 months before you can get you annual leave. In this case you would be effectively committed to this employer for 26 months, including leave time. I encourage you to go to the Amer-Chat on the DRND website. They are able to answer. Once you have your answer, I suggest you also get it in writing if it seems confusing or you think your employer would not agree.

HI Katie, No. They are fine in English. Your labor contract will have to be in English with an Arabic version. (The Arabic version is the binding one. Make sure it has the same terms and conditions!) The most important thing is that your educational degrees (teaching qualification, if needed) are authenticated in your home country and also by the UAE (who attest the embassy of your country). Once that is done, you are fine. Please make sure your degrees were not obtained online as this is now rejected for teaching (look at your transcripts). Your employer will have to get them reviewed by KHDA and after an approval they will submit to the MOL for your work visa. Good luck on the job hunt!
