Obviously, it's none of the cabin crew's business what somebody chooses to feed their child -- I think that's been covered -- but may I just add, from a personal point of view, we were NEVER allowed fizzy drinks -- only water with meals -- and occasionally milk or Aktavite (the boring version of Milo) when we were growing up. Boy, did we feel deprived! That said, we *were* allowed on very rare occasions as a super special treat, to drink soft drinks and one of those times was, guess what, when we were flying somewhere on holidays. I have to say, I loved flying when I was little, but getting that all-important fizzy drink on the flight was almost as good! :D

Well, I'll tackle #4: Yes, I would strongly advise using a home relocation expert, especially if you're unfamiliar with the UAE. I used one when we moved and she set up all our villa viewing appointments as well as giving me loads of advice about life/processes/red tape/etc out here. Pro-tip: If I were you? I'd start separate posts for every single one of your questions. It makes it easier for people to address and answer things. Also, there's a SEARCH POSTS button on the menu bar. It's a bit hit and miss, but you can find some good info there too. Lots of the information you need has been discussed before - not that there's anything wrong with that, and information changes/varies all the time! - but it may help you as well. Good luck. :) . edited by LadyBee on 14/01/2014

I called them yesterday but they said i need to have a car. I moved around 2 months ago and still need to convert my license. And i'm not sure if the car rental companies would allow pets. I never even knew that it was a 'thing' that rental firms didn't allow pets in their cars! We've had rental cars for years - from two different companies - and have always taken our pets here and there in them. So long as the car is returned in good order, where's the problem?!

We're like mrsb. and I agree with her philosophy. When my kids were little, I introduced them to rolled oats (porridge) cooked with milk and for variety, added a little home-made apple puree or diced bananas or blueberries. I mixed it up and now they're very happy to have it with just water and/or milk.. If they have a long stretch before lunch, they'll top the porridge up with bananas and berries, or a little Manuka honey for variety. When they tried commercial cereals, they find them too sweet. We had exactly the same as children and I agree: commercial cereals are terribly sweet. The first time I had breakfast in a hotel, many decades ago, I made a beeline for the muesli because I thought it was probably the 'safest' compared to the coco pops etc, and it was like eating broken bits of sugar cubes. Reeee-volting. ;)

Are they free? If so, you might be interested in giving them away as a job lot to a local charity. There are heaps that sell on books to raise money eg my local dog groomer has second-hand books on sale in the reception area to raise money for 38Smiles, the charity which helps stray animals in Dubai. IF they're free, I'd be happy to collect them and pass them on. Or you could find a charity of your own to support. Good luck, and have a fun time post-Doobers. :) PS. If you're selling them, that's fine too by the way! I'm sure they'll find a happy home. :D

Fair point. Just don't drink and drive. That said, you won't get deported unless you're in an accident. Points, big fine, a few nights in jail, sure, but the rules have relaxed somewhat in the past few years. The chief of police, only recently, said they're not after casual drinkers, only those who endanger lives when in an accident.

It's obvs not as good, but Kahlo make organic cubes/stock. Better than nothing. I've seen cans of sodium-free clear chicken broth in the soup aisle but at this time of year? No chance. I looked a few days ago for some as back-up; no luck. Liquid vegetable stock, on the other hand, I did see in Spins Town Centre this morning. I know it's not the same, but if it's just for a gravy or soup, it should do. Good luck. PS. Making your own really is very very easy. I use a whole bird plus wings -- just add enough water to cover the meat -- and giblets, a few large mushrooms, chopped tomatoes, onion, a leek, carrots, peppercorns, parsley and a few twigs of rosemary ... set and forget, really. Just bring the chicken to the boil then skim. Then add everything else and reduce to simmer for a few hours. Strain, cool and it's good to go. . edited by LadyBee on 24/12/2013

Wow. What awful news for you. At this stage, chances are, you will have difficulty ordering with such short notice. Your best bet is to work your way through the list of hotels that do Christmas orders and see if they can help you. It may involve time on the phone, but that's the way it is at half-three on Christmas Eve. This hotel list is from a 2011 EW thread, but it should still stand. This would be my advice unless someone else knows of a guaranteed place you can get your goodies in at the last minute. http://www.expatechodubai.com/whats-on/festive-takeaway-packages/ Good luck. Sorry your plans have gone pear-shaped. :(

I normally buy a real wreath each year and then decorate it myself with some tiny gold fir cones and golden apples that I have for just this purpose. This year? Dubai Garden Centre weren't expecting their real wreaths to arrive until 15/16 December, so I ended up buying a fake one from them. Looks just as good - and you can twist the wire-based fir into a tidy shape as well - so that's what I have hanging this year. 69dhs. I do miss my daily water spraying of the real wreath and the smell of the fir as you come through the front door, but it's better than nothing. So! Short answer: try Dubai Garden Centre for real or fake. Very easy to whack a few ribbons/baubles/whatever onto it and then sling it onto the front door. PS. The door does feel naked without one, right? :D

Just want to warn you in case relevant that the Mason Pearson brush's effectiveness is mainly due to the natural boar (male piggy) bristles used. edited by Apricot on 19/12/2013 I'd be surprised if they were even imported out here. Mason Pearson also have a selection of nylon-only brushes and even though I'd *like* a really stiff brush, I'd already prepared myself for having to make do with one that isn't like the traditional ones. Thanks for the heads-up anyway.

European 'nanny'? Can't be done, I'm afraid. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but the only person I know who brought out a European 'nanny' had to call her a governess/tutor and pay her accordingly, and by that, I mean in the range of 60+dhs an hour. From memory - this is year ago - she used Simply Angelic. Good luck though. :)

I saw these just the other day in a shop in the Village Mall in Jumeirah.. it is a shop that sells "luxury" items and is adjacent to the post office at the back. I am not sure of the range of these brushes that they sell but they did have a few boxes of them in their window display. What can I say? Genie: you are a GENIE .. and a genius. That is just fantastic. I'm fairly sure they might be a bit more expensive than Amazon, but I really want to feel the brush before I buy and they're SO expensive as it is ... this will prevent my risking a bad buy. THANK YOU!

I've come back from trips -- to France, especially -- with my suitcase pretty much rattling, full of booze and sherry/wine vinegars and jams and cans and cans of pâtés and spices and herbs and marinated fruits and vegetables and cheeses and ... and ... I always prefer Granny Smith apples, esp for Apple Pie or Apple Charlotte. They're easily available at any supermarket. Agree. They hold their shape -- unless reduced to pulp for a sauce -- and have a nice tart edge as well. Delicious. :)

To save washing up and fuss, I buy the big alfoil trays/dishes from Spinneys. They're probably available at most of the supermarkets at this time of year. I use these for everything on Christmas Day, from vegetables to the bird. Of course, when you are cooking a large turkey, it's best to put a smaller aluminium tray underneath (so it doesn't sag when you're lifting it in/out of the oven) but it's a brilliant way to cook things for a crowd. The best thing about these trays is that they're deep; the large amount of juice that the bird 'leaks' when cooking is safely trapped in the dish so you can use it for gravy later. Not sure if that's what you want, but I've been roasting my turkey that way for decades, and it's always worked beautifully. Then all I have to do is throw the alfoil tray away. :) ETA: Sorry, just re-read your post and you need an actual rack for your oven. Apologies. My best advice for that is to buy an aluminium tray that fits the width of your cooker. Try Lakeland at MoE. :D . edited by LadyBee on 15/12/2013

So .... it's not a 'day off' exactly; they're just finishing early? How early are we talking here? Pre-Christmas in schools in western countries are pretty much party central for children and the school. There are nativity plays and parties and all sorts. I do see that it must sting when there are so many other holidays dotted around, but if it's just a matter of school finishing early one day, I'd let it slide. PS. Irrespective of what people might think, teachers do not 'call it a day' when school finishes. And they don't have weekends or evenings 'off'. There is lesson planning and marking and loads of extra work they do to make sure they're the best they can be during lesson time. At least the good ones do.

Where did RuthM say all day pupils are neglected and fed on McD's every night? She just said you can find neglect in any home, and not all parents who send children to boarding school do so to be rid of them. You're right. It always amazes me how people tend to twist things... Not exactly a 'twist'; RuthM, in describing her own boarding/day-school experience made some comments and some took them to heart. I personally felt she went a tad over the line in commenting that the boarders at her school did better post-school than her day school mates, and that the boarders had better relationships with their parents. Those comments were her own observations, which is perfectly fine of course, but it *kind* of felt like she was saying this was true of all boarders vs day pupils. Again, this is just the way her post sounded. Not a personal attack. I for one can assure anyone reading this that it's not always the case. It wasn't at my school; wasn't at my brother's or cousins' schools either. And we all attended single-*** combined boarding private schools and all lived to tell the tale. :) . edited by LadyBee on 03/12/2013

Just to add: I paid no mind to RuthM's comments re clubbing/neglect/McD's; I was more unsettled by the boarder v day pupil post-school success standard that she mentioned. .. Of which I certainly have no evidence, given my experience at least.

She just said you can find neglect in any home, and not all parents who send children to boarding school do so to be rid of them. She didn't say this was the case with everyone, but her words did leave a mark. At my school there were many day pupils who would come home to an empty house, eat macdonalds for dinner every night, go clubbing at 13 years old and the closest they got to emotional contact with their parents was being bought new things (i.e. bribed with gifts). This certainly wasn't my experience at school, nor was it the experience of -- I'm practically certain! -- any of my fellow pupils. Clubbing?! No such animal in my day!

RuthM: I really do enjoy your posts, but I also found some of the comments you made vis-a-vis day pupils v boarders borderline offensive. Perhaps it's a UK thing, but in Australia, there's not much between the success achieved of either. It all depended upon how they took to the environment. Certainly, if it came to high-jinks, the boarders had just as much 'fun' as the day girls at my school and got up to just as much mischief as well. Or not. Again, it all depended on the individual. Most of the boarders at my school were 'off the land' - not armed forces - so there was obviously a different background there, but viewing my year (at least) as a whole, there was no fundamental difference between what the boarders and the day girls went on to achieve post-school. I'd say close to every single girl in my year of 153 students went onto university and after that? Most travelled and worked and did incredible things into their 20s/30s and 40s. I say this as someone who attended my school for 10 years but was a boarder for a year so I have, to some extent, seen both sides of the story. PS. To the OP: bit of a pro-tip ... If you're considering the boarding scenario, sooner rather than later is best. Friendships are built early at these schools and it's best to get a foot in the door at a younger age rather than in the last few years of school, imho. It's more difficult for pupils to 'break into' established cliques and groups the older they are. Moreover, I know I'm speaking about a school experience that goes back some decades and mine applies to a single-s3x girl's school situation, but for girls? The ones who found it most difficult to settle were those who were sent to school to be 'finished' by virtue of tacking on two years at the end of their education, rather than be educated. So to speak. ;) . edited by LadyBee on 03/12/2013

For anyone questioning the legality of live-outs, how do people who have absolutely no extra accommodation hire home help unless it's legal? If you don't have a spare room, where do you put your helper? I've heard of maids sharing rooms with the kids and even sleeping on the kitchen floor, but most sensible employers without spare room use live-outs. This is particularly true for families in apartments. I stress: you must be the sponsor and pay all associated fees. The Philippines Consulate recommends that you add 500+dhs to a 'live-in' wage to cover additional costs/transportation, but that figure varies depending upon the circumstances of one's live-out help, how far she has to travel, how many people with whom she's sharing etc ...

It is LEGAL to sponsor a live-out maid. As a sponsor I do know where she lives. I also hold her passport (because she's asked me to, in her opinion it's safer with me than in her shared apartment). OP, go to immigration, either with her passport or a copy, and report her absconding. Exactly.

On another note - why would you allow someone sponsored by you to live outside your home? I am not 100% sure but do believe that this is illegal. As sponsor, it is your responsibility to know where your maid is - if she is living outside, how can you? Surely you know where she lives. It's perfectly legal to have a live-out maid but you must be her sponsor and have all her papers in order. Lots of people use live-out maids who commute each day and the sponsor pays more to cover her rent/expenses for the privilege of having a 'daily' rather than a live-in. Agree, however, that it's a bit remiss not to know where one's maid is living, how she's travelling, her circumstances etc ... To the OP: even if you only have a photocopy of her passport/visa, you can set the wheels in motion and report her as having absconded. Just visit contact the Immigration authority -- I'm pretty sure Dubai Police won't do anything unless she's stolen from you, for example -- and take it from there. She's broken her contract with you and apart from anything else, you don't want her to take advantage of another family. Good luck. . edited by LadyBee on 03/12/2013

Shame if it's too late to order a fresh turkey from the organic market, I was planning to do that later this week. Goose? Definitely available from Spins. Capon too I think, but can't prove. You didn't mention if you had pets? That can be an issue in a compound if you are bringing cats/dogs with you. If you are pet-free, then obviously, nothing to worry about. :) I guess it depends whether each villa is its own walls. Our villas are all walled individually within the compound. I keep chickens as well as a dog without problems. You would have to look around for a suitable compound. True. Though may I add ... you must have well-behaved chooks and dog! We are in a self-contained villa and my dogs still - despite years here and pretty good training - bark at everything. ;)

By 'suitable for the kids', do you mean no alcohol? I'm afraid my recipe DOES have booze in it, but it's a lovely cake for all that - my grandma's recipe - and I've eaten it myself since I was a tot. PS. No icing on it - not sure if you need that as well? My recipe is a heavy fruit cake which is decorated with blanched almonds. It IS delicious though and you can substitute the almonds for fondant etc later if you want; it will still work. I've got Scottish heritage though, so we don't *do* icing. Apparently!
