Hi would any one know of a vet or vet surgeries that would do free check ups and treatments and stuff for stray cats in Doha? We've kind of been adopted by a stray kitty who will shortly become a mummy so I know I need to take her in to make sure everything OK and when she's had her kittens to you know, snip snip. Have been buying food and stuff for her but the thought of a vet's bill is a little dauntimg! Thanks

Hi Could try Babul Limo service - 33 8135 17 have used them earlier after forum recomendation - very polite, arrive on time and basic flat rate is 40riyals I think... but you can ask them yourself... If 40 too much may be Karwa - 45 8888 8 or Fox - 46 2277 7 - but haven't used these taxis tho... hope something positive happens! good luck edited by ladyluna on 12/03/2012

It depends on the reason for your water retention If you know the name of the drug, you can buy from the pharmacy yourself... I get my ( in the UK prescription only) medicine over the counter here without prescription... as long as your medicine doesn't contain codeine or any of the controlled substances of Doha, most pharmacies will dispense.

could try Najma souk... it has a plethora of shops that sell furniture, DIY stuff and has plenty of curtain shops at a fraction of the cost of other shops... the shop I went to had ready made from QR80 for heavy damask type curtains and QR20 for 2.5m of voile type... carpenter was there, brought him back to fix everything paid him QR200 complete job done for 4 windows at a cost of about QR1000 including curtain rods the swish type for both curtain and voile plus the tie backs... thought it was a bargain! coz I did bargain If Najma isn't your cup of tea, you could always try Homecentre and Homes r us, they always have curtains that appeal to all kinds of taste... so its a matter of just shopping around really... good luck.. if you want made to measure price depends on material and how bling bling you want them....

ok lack of a zip kind of makes sense now ... however had my DDs not worn skorts with zippers for a previous school I would have accepted it as a design detail.... @mariav... I hear ya, my gals don't use the buttons either! the elastication makes it easy to wear... the design just seemed unfinished some how... anyhoo roll on the christmas holidays!

Hi momoyum the total freight moved including car was 1150 pounds roughly a 20ft container plus space in another one...13500 dirhams, I didn't bring any furniture, this is just purely, soft furnishings, linens, kitchen stuff, microwave, water cooler, clothes and pictures and frames plus 2 small rugs audio/video stuff the car plus a few boxes (don't know which ones) have reached here and waiting on pick up after eid (inshallah)... the company have asked for about 3500dhs to be paid for it now so DH sorting it out.. car collected 3rd august, put on ship 17th august, told it had arrived Doha 25th august ramadan timings!! re getting the car ready for travelling... cost for MOT+export license insurance+ export number plates approx 800 dhs from the road licensing office in Abu Dhabi... Dubai will probably have the same system so say 1000dhs? is this what you wanted to know?

Hi Finding a school place here is a premium as the waiting lists have waiting lists! that said if you time your admissions just right - it all depends on when you are moving - you can get school places so don't lose hope also there is not the variety of school type here as in Dubai where most of the independant schools of england have campuses there and the excellence of other british curriculum schools is firmly established like Jumerah college , wellington, raffles, Dubai english speaking school etc that said, we have to be happy with what is on offer here for our children otherwise what else can we do? so here is my list of schools - others will have different ones - doha college (in the Al Waab area), park house (near Abu Hammour), sherborne school (near Al Rayyan road close to education City and very good compound Beverley Hills Al Rayyan) are british curriculum and very sought after get on to them pronto..... also where you live depends on where you get school place as generally traffic here is busy but coming from Dubai you will be used to it... most compounds will have school buses so no worries there there is also the Newton british school here with 4 campuses - most in villas but a brand new purpose built school has opened in the Lagoons area - my kids y7, y9 and y12 going there - also international school of London, doha offers british curriculum but it is situated in Al Kheesa which is about 30 mins drive from city centre (aspire zone) off the North road Q1 it has good rep. good luck edited by ladyluna on 02/09/2011 edited by ladyluna on 02/09/2011 edited by ladyluna on 07/09/2011

Hi Sherborne school is quite(!) close to Beverly Hills compound... check out www.dubizzle.com/qatar to get an idea of what it looks like.... the best thing you can do really which I did to find my place... to drive around from the school and if you see "To Let" signs and you like the look of the place just make a note of it or if you see compounds just drive up to the security gate, the men there have numbers of people who broker villas there or even the owners... In my short time here (previously Abu Dhabi resident) I've realised that it is a luxury to be able to get accommodation within 10mins of school.... realistically timings are anything 20-30 mins because of traffic and other causes!!! good luck hope I've helped.

OK so I'm cheap and love a bargain.... something for nothing sounds like a good price point! but also it has to be a reasonable cost, something that makes sense to me... in London I would pay 120 QR for mani-pedi with polish so I compare prices in these terms..... in abu dhabi I pay 110Dhs = 110QR for mani pedi that has hand/feet soak, scrub, cream massage on both, cuticle remove, nail trim and file with polish or french! plus if I want hard skin bladed, do that to at no extra cost!! feet like a hobbit some months!! salon is in a mall so Landmark - booth wanted 200QR and 40QR for threading eyebrows medical spa the same...... in Abu Dhabi, I pay 20dhs threading .....waxing underarm here only 25dhs all at salons that expat and locals visit.... so trial and error it is in Doha too.... like the sound of glow, there is a branch near me in West bay .... will give them a ring when I get to Doha eventually.... thanks for your replies....

hi Also newly arrived, moved from AD, a bit tired and dispirited (no school places for September!) with 3 kids in tow... I've been taking my lot, DDs 11 and 13 and DS 16, to the movies across the malls.... DS catching up on xbox time - stopped him over the exam season - so he's on it like a fly on honey but heeheehee I am having the last laugh because the home internet speed is soooo slooow!!! I'm just enjoying not rushing off to do errands - can't drive here yet - passing the days relaxed and letting the kids tell me if they want to do activities or not... term time I have veto not them so.... good luck edited by ladyluna on 14/07/2011

what can I do now? any ideas? all the schools have shut until august 20th at the latest and I have no school places for my kids!(Y7, Y9, Y12). They only did admission test for the new campus of newton british school in the lagoon area and really would have liked them to do more to have a better chance of places somewhere... have tried to read on earlier posts about newton but didn't find anything specific. any one on here have kids at newton british school - the secondary school? whats your opinion? I can only wait and hope that it won't be too late by end of august for school places.... despondent :( :( :(

Hi The name is EMLA and it is a topical anesthetic cream...back in the UK a nurse recommended that I use it on my little girl's arm before her vaccinations...it really helped! but you have to apply it at least 1 hour before... edited by ladyluna on 05/04/2011
