Try "House of colours" for immediate one - just google them for contact details. If I was you I would retrieve old one from recycling bin and take it to Satwa, loads of colours to choose from and get a tailor to make them up. I have about 5 now cost approx 120aed including material and making up from City Land Tailors.

When I renewed mine, waited weeks for notification to collect, heard nothing, oh sorry this was in May and I got a text giving me an appointment miles away in Al Rashidya for October some 6 months away!!!! Which I ignored, thought it was a mistake. Eventually rang Emirated ID and explained situation, told I needed to redo fingerprints, pity they didnt say that in the initial text! Got an appointment for two days later in Al Barsha (much nearer to home) re did fingerprints, in and out of ID place in less than 5 mins. Got a text two weeks later and picked up ID at knowledge Village Post Office.

Can't help as to wether Dragonmart have any but ACE ones are so cheap compared to the UK so much so that DH had wanted to buy about 100 to send home for DD's business, even factoring shipping they still seemed like a bargain! However was worried about being stung with UK import tax so have put plans on hold for now. Please be wary of buying cheaper/Chinese import types due to immflamability/toxic fumes issues, check them out very carefully before bringing them into your home.

But Lal, I think the OP's point is that this wasn't a major international tournament, it was a badly run amateur one. Anyhow, there are lots of really dodgy karate places in Dubai - my son has probably gone to most of them. But I've also heard good things about www.dubaikarate.com - not tried it though. I get what you are saying but in my experience even local amateur tournaments can take all day. It depends on how many instructors will volunteer to officiate, how many rings can be used etc. My DD who runs her own TKD and Kickboxing Schools organises tournaments and even ones just for her students can take all day to complete. I hope the OP and her son can find a club that they feel comfortable with and if he chooses to continue with his sport at least he will now be better prepared knowing what competitive tournaments are about and decided accordingly if it's for him.

As a parent yes 4 and a half hours might seem excessive and a long time to wait, but after spending many years attending tournaments all over the UK and Europe this is unfortunately part and parcel of tournament life. Unless it is a small one or two club local competition there will always be long waiting times. I have often left home at 3 or 4 a.m. to get DD to a tournament for a 8-9 a.m. weigh in only to then have to wait till 4p.m or later for her to compete. The students and parents should have been better advised as to what the day would entail and then they could then make the decision as to wether to compete or not. Competitive tournaments and the waiting times endured are not for everyone and only the very keen are willing to put with what the day or days entails to achieve their ultimate goal.

My DD's have done martial arts since they were 7 and one is now 30 and competed all over the UK and abroad and 41/2 hours waiting to compete is not unusual or excessive, it is part and parcel of tournament life. However is may have been advisable for his instructor to advise his students as what to expect. If you DS would consider changing martial arts I can recommend Adam Nazer at Dunamis Training for taekwondo see link http://www.dunamistraining.net/dunamisprograms.html he is affiliated to the UK and Phil Lear (England coach) often pops over to oversee things. I think "October's" DD has gone there for years. edited by lal1 on 10/10/2012

I spent my first year of married life in New Zealand and returned home to the UK where we stayed for 30+years before ending up here in Dubai. Whilst we enjoyed our time in New Zealand we quickly realised that it wasn't for us and returned home. We were very young and found the laid back life style a little too laid back for us and found it rather parochial. In hindsight we would have been better to try out another city before cutting our losses and going home but that's all now in the past. We did return a few years ago for a month long holiday, visiting all the touristy places as well as returning to where we used to live and having a reunion with friends we had made such a long time ago. The place is stunning, Christchurch is a wonderful city, which I hope recovers well from the earthquake. NZ has a lot to offer, but we still felt we had made the right decision in not settling there. However what's right for one person is not neccessarily right for another I would advise you visit, possibly staying in a few home stays (their version of b&b's) to meet some locals and take things from there. I felt wages were lower there than the UK but the cost of living and quality of life NZ can offer more than compensates. As for the isolation of feeling you are so far away from everwhere else, remember that the it is still only 24 hrs away from UK. I am sure there will be plenty of Kiwi's who will come on EW with more specific advise as and when you need it. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Why can't you just accept that these are the rules, no exceptions allowed and move on. I worked as school admin at a primary school in the UK and my biggest headache was always the parents who didn't or wouldn't accept that rules are rules and the admission cut off date is set in stone. I had one doctor who looked down at me (well he was 6'4") and bellowed "well what am I supposed to do with her till then?" as she was a Sept 1st birthday and would have to wait another year for admission. Sorry but that was his problem he would probably induced his wife a week early if he'd known earlier LOL. There is always going to be someone who thinks the rules don't apply to them, well here's news for you IT DOES! Personally I have had one child being almost the oldest in their class and one being almost the youngest. Both extremes have advantages and disadvantages, but I will always cherish the extra time I had at home with the child starting school at almost 4 rather than the one starting just turned three.

One of our more popular trips for our visitors is:- Abra across the creek to spice souk, then walk up to gold souk. Retrace steps and get abra back across the creek to textile souk, buy some pashminas and then walk to Dubai Museum. Cost for abras and museum 5 aed pp. Bargain! Can be done in a morning and leaves the rest of the day free to go to beach or pool to recover.

Or how about Yalumba at Le Meridien near the airport, for an Aussie slant on a Dubai Brunch? I know it gets some bad press but the food including the a la carte extras are very good, the staff are attentive and friendly, the atmosphere is lively, but you could always ask for a quiet table as there are some tucked away into little alcoves. I would never take my parents to Yalumba! ;-0 well I am a parent and I take my grown up children when they visit! DD celebrated her 24th birthday there and we all had a great time. (Does that make me a bad parent? :\: )

Great suggestions ladies, thank you. I know that the Westin is very popular, but am I right in thinking that there will be lots of kids? How about Al Qasr? The Westin Bubby Brunch is lovely it is spread over all three restaurants so I would book a table in Hunters Room and Grill it is more refined and less children orientated than The Blue Orange restaurant, you can wander into all three restaurants for food. Spectrum on One at the Fairmont is good, however they only seem to serve "red"or "white" wine and not specific types as I asked for a sav Blanc and just got the generic white wine out of a carafe so I couldn't even find out what type or even brand it was, which is a bit of a concern, however later on I found out you could order spirit mixers or cocktails from the bar.

Check out short term rentals on EW property listings, plus consider serviced apartments e.g. Liwa Heights JLT, or plenty in Tecom, Al Barsha etc. Might sound a more expensive option but as they include everything i.e Furniture and fittings, Dewa, A/C, Internet and housekeeping isn't such a bad deal after all.

I think you will need to find a different charity, I am sure there are plenty who would take them, including Dubai Center for Special Needs who have their own charity shop in Karama. You can drop things at either the centre or charity shop. Lady usually only accepts books/DVDs which she sells and then makes up gift boxes which she distributes to the labourers. edited by lal1 on 29/08/2012

So many of the places are pricier and more formal restaurants in hotels. Anyone know which of the Costa/ Starbucks type places are open (other than Counter Culture of course) Last year the Starbucks in Health Care city was open and Costa on the Palm but not sure of this year? Counter Culture isn't that expensive if you have a Timeout Citycard - you get 25% discount, so brings it down to a more realistic price.

sorry Lala but you must thing that we all live in Lalaland.... Be honest. Don't know who Lala :) is but it's not me we just have similar names, I go to London Style and Class after a personal recommendation from a friend, Louise used to do my hair, but when she was off on sick leave Helen started doing my hair. I have not used anyone else since. Didn't know Louise had left, but will ask Helen about the next time I go. Please don't assume an over enthusiastic poster is a member of staff and therefore think the salon and indeed Helen needs to stoop to such levels. Helen's work speaks for its self I certainly have no hesitation in recommending her. Thank you for posting. I only revived the thread because I was genuinely interested in trying the salon after reading others recommendations for Louise on various threads. I tried calling the 04 landline but it wasn't working nor was the email as it was returned to me. Maybe I will try again to see if I can get through. The salon mobile is 0566913643

( voucher in Lu Lu as they dont refund ) They must refund you in cash. By law. they never refund ! seriously .. neither do the likes of New Look and H & M and they put the money on a store card or give you a credit note... I didnt know it was the law ! I got a cash refund from Lulus when I was overcharged, an item was wrongly ticketed. I was buying 2 hand towels and 1 bath towel, so it should have been 2 at the cheaper price and 1 at the dearer, but it was the other way around on the bill. I was still at the till when I noticed the mistake and it kept scanning the wrong amounts when the girl rechecked them. Quite a performance trying to get her to understand what the issue was, so I didn't move and held up the queue. It did take a while, 2 visits from the supervisor as at first she agreed it was wrong then walked away as the girl on the till then said what did I want to buy with the difference......errr nothing I was my money refunded, so the supervisor was summoned again and after quite a lengthy chat I got my cash back. It was when I first moved here and hadn't realised there was such a difference in customer service here to back home, but I got the result I was after even if it did take almost 30 mins out of my life (I should have charged them for my time) LOL
