I got curious about it some time back before a bikini holiday and gave it a go (found it in a common pharmacy on SZR, maybe Life?) but it did nothing. Totally nothing. Deep down, I knew it wouldn't - but hey, would't it be great if there was such an easy way to stay slim - but we can wish. Simply eating healthier, moderating my portions (I generally gorge, my biggest problem) and jogging a bit a few days a week did so much more for me.

This is near the Buraimi crossing, yes? If so, you do not need a hotel reservation to cross the border. Hotel reservations are only required at the Dibba crossing into Musandam. You will need proof of car insurance that covers you in Oman, however. Personally, I would think it's too hot to camp this time of year, but if it's higher up in the mountains you might be ok. I've never been to Wadi Madbah (or maybe I have - I've done a lot of hiking in that area - but I can't recall specifically) however I think wadis/waterfalls would be mostly dry by now. But then again, I find it too hot to hike after March or April, so I can't speak from personal experience.

Hi there - this link may help you with some information. I've heard somewhat varied details about the procedures from other people who have freelance visas (in the journalism/media industry) saying that it's not quite as tricky as this link leads you to believe. But maybe it varies somewhat from industry to industry? http://www.askexplorer.com/dubai/residents/how-tos/work-business/freelance-employment/applying-for-a-freelance-employment-visa Good luck!

I don't think freelancing is illegal, otherwise sites like Nabbesh.com would have been shut down ages ago. Jesspass you can try Nabbesh for work from home freelance jobs, they have a range of freelance jobs from data entry to accounting to design! Article from Nabbesh: http://blog.nabbesh.com/2013/10/finally-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about-the-rules-of-freelancing-in-the-uae/ edited by sourskittleashnut on 31/03/2015 Freelancing is legal - but only if you have a freelancing visa/permit (as noted in the Nabbesh link), which I have heard (don't know the fee for a fact) runs around AED 20k. While trying to find an "official" cost, came across this: [url=http://www.askexplorer.com/dubai/residents/how-tos/work-business/freelance-employment/applying-for-a-freelance-employment-visa'>link[/url'> <em>edited by laurelm on 15/04/2015</em>

Mint Leaf of London, a grown up kinda brunch. Ah, I love going to Mint Leaf in the evenings, but it's often pretty dead (I truly hope it doesn't close, it's delicious and I love sitting at the bar), which is a shame. I've been tempted by the brunch, but worried the place might be quite empty and lacking atmosphere (judging by the evenings). How did you find it in that regard?

Zuma - they stopped the brunch but it's back on currently on limited engagement, I think through June. Toko is another nice one, but I don't know how it is if you're stuck inside - it's a lovely spot if you're outside. Both of these have bubbly options. I've heard great things about the Cafe Belge brunch (and I'm pretty sure it's bubbly), but haven't been myself (yet). I eat and drink there pretty regularly and love it, and can see them pulling off a very nice brunch indeed. If you're up for a Saturday brunch, I've heard Sass Cafe is a really good time (although don't know if it's bubbly). Haven't done it myself (Saturday, ugh) but the food there is good and they mix up incredible cocktails. I went to the Bubblicious brunch (@ Westin) the other weekend. Thought it was grim. So, despite the fact it's bubbly, I would mention only to avoid.

Thank you! I actually ended up traveling there in late March and had a wonderful time. The story's filed now and can be found in one of the summer issues of the Mid East edition of Conde Nast Traveller mag (if you're keen). Hope you're enjoying it there - I really was taken by the place and hope to return soon.

On Sheikh Zayed Road, in the back of one of the short buildings next to Dusit Thani (Kawakab buildings might be their names?), you'll find a tack shop called Emirta.

I have. I wouldn't do it again. The clothes aren't well made - which is obvious at those prices, so it's not like that shocked me. I ordered a handful of items at once and some got some good use from a couple, like simple, loose sheer tops to wear over tanks, etc. Then there were a couple other things that I've never worn because I simply can't fit into them. The clothes run small. Real small. I'm a small, sometimes an extra small, and I ordered medium stuff (knowing they ran small) but they barely fit. Too tight, too small. Maybe if I could lose those final 5lbs, hah! I think I got exactly what I figured I would at those prices but I don't trust being able to order sizes accurately, so that's that for me. Shipped and delivered within the timeframe it said it would. I know someone else who ordered from them as well and had the same complaints as me.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend anywhere here in the UAE, but I was in Bahrain last week and did some pearl shopping there. There's a ban on selling cultured pearls there and they take their pearl diving heritage particularly seriously (I would say more so than anywhere else in the GCC, and pearls from around Bahrain are supposed to be top-notch) so it was a really interesting experience. Plus - new jewelery, yay. Sorry I wasn't able to answer your question, really, but I would highly recommend a trip to Bahrain, anyway (for the peals and experiencing the place generally speaking). I was there to write a travel story (to be published this summer) but I'm hooked and can't wait to return.

I was there last May or June (so not super recently, but I've been there three times since the woes began, & once during protests, all without issue) and it was fine. Just be watchful in the same way you would in any city. As for a dining recommendation, I would suggest Aleria. Fantastic food and very interesting little spot. Lots of quirky design elements done very well. Lots of character. There's so much to see, I could write a book (and have indeed written about Greece quite a bit in my blog and for CNT) but the place itself is just so bursting with history, you hardly need pointers. It's just everywhere. Walk, walk, walk and you'll take a great deal in. ETA: for great views of the Acropolis while dining or drinking, head to King George Hotel and Grande Bretagne Hotel, both in Syntagma Square (+ nice shopping nearby in Kolonaki). Tudor Hall @ King George for good food and views; GB Roof Garden @ Grande Bretagne for drinks and views. <em>edited by laurelm on 11/03/2015</em>

Not really a coffee drinker myself, but recently got the boyfriend a DeLonghi and he is pretty happy with it. I'm not sure exactly what type it is, but it's on the smaller side - doesn't have a bean grinder, so bought one of those separately, although does have a milk warmer/frother - and I think is probably a good "starter" espresso/latte machine if you've never used something like this before (or are short on counter space). He's made me some good lattes from it and I think they're pretty tasty, but again, I'm no coffee expert (I drink one or two cups a week, max, and before the coffee maker, maybe once or twice a month). I purchased it at Galeries Lafayette last autumn. Generally, they have a decent selection there, so I'd say is worth checking their wares in any case.

I quite like The Act for nights like this. Good Peruvian food and after dinner (around 11:30) the floor is cleared of tables to create a dance floor and it turns into a nightclub.

I've done this run more times than I care to admit to, and that's been my experience every time (I go early on a Friday or Saturday morning). I don't have kids, but I've never had to leave the parking lot or show my Oman insurance. Getting there around 9am, it's usually an efficient in and out. Knock on wood admitting this won't jinx it for my next run!

Maybe a printing press would give a better price? Most have digital printing facilities and would be set up to produce large quantities (unlike your day-to-day photo shops). I've never tried personally, but could be worth a shot. I've worked with Atlas Printing Press and Emirates Printing Press (both in Al Quoz) over the years in the publishing industry, and both are good (they've printed/print mags like Harpers Bazaar, Viva, Conde Nast Traveller, etc).

Ah! I thought Zuma brunch was closed for good, so this is great news - it's my favorite. Toko isn't bad, especially if you're sitting outside it's quite nice. The stuffed courgette flowers are yum yum yum. I've considered trying Okku's brunch, but I get the feeling it's a bit more of a party atmosphere. Has anyone tried it? I'd be interested to hear what it's really like - dinner is usually fine. The promo emails I get from them about brunch just seem a bit cheesy. If you're up for the journey, Zuma Abu Dhabi still has their brunch on. I booked for Okku - eighties themed (sad but I love the 80s) and for the Japanese. Will let you know how good (or bad) it is! Thanks for the tip! Excellent, have fun! I hope it's a good one. Update us and let us know what the score is (I like a good bit of the 80s myself)!

If you just need new lenses, I went to Yateem for a new prescription very recently, and it cost 250dhs for the testing and lenses (really just the lenses though, the testing was free of charge). Got my glasses returned to me within 48 hours. I'm not sure how that stacks up against other opticians (I went there because of convenience) but at least you can call some other opticians and see how the price compares. I'm not sure where to suggest for frames, sorry. I knew exactly which frames I wanted and didn't really browse around.

Would also suggest the hotel. It was years ago I stayed there, but was great. Additionally, was recently in touch with Al Sahel regarding doing a family break story there and they strongly advised against it. The Anantara people seem to consider the Desert Islands hotel for families and the all-villa resorts (Al Yamm and Al Sahel) for adults/couples/romantic getaways. I think Al Yamm is better for children than Al Sahel; the children loves waking up with animals outside the villa. Al Sahel seems more quiet romantic kind of place. There were a lot of families at the Al Yamm villas. Ah, thanks for the clarification, as I only know about the villa resorts what Anantara has passed on. Will be staying at Al Sahel at the end of the month though, and very much looking forward to seeing what it's all about.

I found some similar potato-and-mushroom-filled Russian dumplings in Al Maya. Not too bad. But that's all I've seen in my near seven years here. There's a lot of Polish heritage in the American city that I'm from so I grew up on pierogies (and kielbasa and sauerkraut) and really miss them here. I often end up just making a batch of a few dozen myself and freezing them to keep me satisfied. They're a pain to make, but worth it. If you find any other places that have them, please do share! <em>edited by laurelm on 01/03/2015</em>

I am pretty sure I have used my UAE-bought curler/straightener in the states (I refuse to use any other appliance and take it everywhere with me for about 4 years now). I want to say that I used a voltage converter to ensure it worked, but I also don't think I own one (perhaps there was one at my parents' house), so can't say for sure. That being said, I have had other curling irons zap out on me in the states, so I definitely wouldn't guarantee your accessories' safety.

I was there early July and the heat was just too much (and I am pretty good with the heat here). I guess it would be marginally cooler in mid-June, but enough to make a real difference? I don't know. The landscape is stunning, but even once the sun starts to set, it was just too close to sit - or do anything - outside comfortably. I also didn't care for the pool much, which is where I would spend most of my time in a summer getaway, but that's a personal preference. In general, the place left me kind of "meh", but I feel if maybe I was there in a cooler month, and really able to appreciate the location and surrounds, I may have had a different opinion. And, while the hotel was nice, I didn't really think it was so nice that it was still enjoyable being stuck inside. Sorry, I can't answer your spa questions though - sure a quick call will be able to get you your answer, though.

I don't know about vouchers, but most resorts around the region will have summer specials on, if you check their websites or give them a ring. I've seen some pretty good ones lately. On a side note, not sure if you've been to QAS before, but I went in summer once and I wouldn't be keen to revisit or recommend it that time of year. While some hotels are just fine in the summer, IMO, this is not one.

You won't need a visa, but there is a checkpoint on the Hatta Road where you'll drive through a pocket of Omani territory and you'll have to show your passports to continue on. No stamping/visas; they'll have a quick look (sometimes they don't even bother looking) and you go on.

I rarely go to the salon, but when I do, I tip 10% as long as I'm happy (I try to stick to this rule for any kind of tipping) - which I felt was perhaps cheap (back in the states I tipped more like 20% unless i was unhappy). I recently got the impression that 10% was maybe not the norm here, though, when I gave my hairdresser a 100dhs tip at the end (10% of my bill) and I thought his eyeballs were going to fall out of his head as I handed it to him.

I don't think there are any shops or restaurants - yet. I was looking at flats there just a couple months ago, and they do have a retail section, but it was totally empty. As for people coming and going: I visit friends there from time to time, and I come in and out of the building as I please - there are no access cards (that I noticed) and security has never stopped me to make me sign in or out.

I recently moved to the DIFC area, and was hoping to consider The Maze as an option, but there were - at the time, a couple months ago - no flats available. Same with Capricorn, I think. I looked at loads of buildings on SZR (1 & 2-bed) and many had zero vacancies. I ended up moving into Damac Park Towers - really like it. I use the metro to get to and from work every day - it's maybe a 5-min walk to the station. Not bad.

Stay in both! I went last summer and spent some some in a cute little place in Sultanahmet (don't recall the name; a lot of places were booked up and it was just an average guesthouse type place), then moved over to Galata, just off of Istiklal St and a short walk from Taksim Square. The place there was called the House Hotel Galatasaray - highly recommend it for the location and the accommodation. I was there during the riots and the area was fine. It was still in a fun neighbourhood, but far enough away from the square not to have been effected by the events.

Hey, I've been living in a 2-bed in the Ranches (Al Reem) for 2 years now and have no kids, but after 1 year I had had enough, really. I guess it depends on what sort of lifestyle you like. I love having a garden (it's the #1 reason I moved here), but otherwise I find the place too quiet and inconveniently-located. I thought I was ready for a quieter life, but but never got used to be being away from the city. On top of that, I feel like it's one problem after another with the villa - things always breaking, stopping working. I don't know if we just have a particularly bad one or what, but I've lived various places around Dubai in my almost-6-years here, and I found the quality of this home to be the poorest. As it happens I'm moving out next week to DIFC, and I could not be happier.

Listening to a prominent local lawyer on the radio recently, it is only a problem if you are doing visa runs and working, as it is against the law to work on a visitor's visa. Anyone doing so and found out would, apparently, be deported. edited by amelia on 13/02/2014 Thanks for sharing. Did he/she mention whether there would be a penalty for the employer? Some companies seem to use this arrangement for long periods of time... The employer is also at fault/breaking the UAE Labor Law, and I believe they would be fined (50,000dhs?). I, too, have known many companies to do this, although have never see/heard of any actually getting caught or in trouble. Not that that makes it ok, of course. Properly hire the person or don't have them working for you at all; it drives me nuts, personally.

I don't think it's a problem. I've known a lot of people doing visa runs for extended periods without any problems. And it just so happens that I'm doing my fourth consecutive run tomorrow, so I guess I'm about to find out for sure! How's the job hunting going? what are you looking for? I was looking for copywriting (and still would consider it), but travel writing is my ultimate goal. Ask at Kodak. They won't be able to do it in the shop, and will have to send away for it, but they may well be able to accommodate that size. Also, on the top level of Festival City, next to Ikea, there's a print kiosk. I can't recall what they're called, but I stopped there recently to get something about 6x8" size printed out, and they told me they only do over-sized printing. Anywhere should be able to do black & white.
