I don't know about the other ingredients, but you should be able to find cayenne pepper in most grocery stores' spice sections. I know I've got some at home and don't recall putting any effort into finding it. edited by laurelm on 24/06/2013

Good luck giggles! I too, was made redundant just last week (can continue work there through September, though), and from the moment I found out have been fervently working towards my next move. Through the day check Bayt, LinkedIn, Dubizzle, Gulf Jobs, trying to get ins with connections...it's all very tedious. But necessary. Like you, I also am looking to change my direction (thankfully, I've been planning this for a little while now) and hope to find something in copywriting or writing for something along the lines of Time Out or Explorer. I just feel this is THE WORST time of year to be looking for a job. *sigh* Best wishes and I hope something works out for you soon!

If anyone still has any doubts about the fairness of her first trial.......try reading "The Monster of Florence " by Douglas Preston and Mario Spezi. The two writers were at various points treated as suspects, merely because they had written about the case, Same Chief Prosecutor, who incidentally believes in witchcraft. Very frightening, and I don't just mean the murders. That was quite an interesting book. Gives you something to think about, although I think probably with a grain of salt. Not sure why it is any less believable than some of the "evidence" against Knoxx. I certainly wouldn't want to be changed with any crime under that particular jurisdiction, if even a fraction of the book (and many other accounts of that particular investigation) is true. Oh goodness no, absolutely not! I don't disagree with you at all there. I'm just in the habit of hesitantly believing anything I read; it's not specific to this. I guess I just didn't want to give the impression I took it as gospel.

The magic of Christmas flights. I've been going to the UK mostly to spend Cmas with the SO's family over the past several years and was always flabbergasted by the prices. This year, for the first time since I moved to Dubai 5+ years ago, we're going to see my fam in the US and it doesn't look like we're getting back for under 8,000 dhs each! I'm no longer clutching my pearls at the UK Cmas flights, hah. As mentioned, I would also recommend Royal Brunei or Gulf Air. Prices are reasonable and the airlines are good enough. The stop in Bahrain with GA is a bit of a nuisance though, so I'd recommend keeping your eye on Royal Brunei, mostly. edited by laurelm on 19/06/2013 edited by laurelm on 19/06/2013

Somewhat bizarrely, I have realized that even if I don't spell the words correctly, the incapsula thing still sends me through to the website. On two occasions now, my iPad has auto corrected the weird incapsula words and I hit "go" or whatever before I realized or had the chance to fix them, yet it still sent me through as if I had typed them correctly. Ditto. What great security...lol....obviously has nothing to do with getting it right! I just purposefully spelled it wrong to test it, and yeah - still in on the first go! Why so lenient for us while other people have to go through multiple tries? Very odd. I feel as if the other people needing multiple tries to get through are taking the hit for it being so lax on us!

Aw, sorry to hear that! I needed this stuff as a kid for recurring ear infections and HATED it. It really is the most awful tasting stuff. I can still vividly recall the taste. I remember choking it down with some chocolate pudding, though. I wasn't 100% hidden; I knew it was in there. But it was bearable. edited by laurelm on 17/06/2013

I have never had Mexican hot chocolate! Where do you get it? Or how do you make it? @ CrashingWaves I wouldn't mind getting that recipe! Sounds nice! @ Buttercup I've never seen it here, so sorry I guess it's a bit of a tease! Nor have I made it myself, but I'm sure a google search could help you out. It's not complicated, as far as I'm aware, basically hot chocolate with some ground pepper in it. Got a nice little bite.

I used them for a full restoration of a leather Balenciaga bag and they did great. That doesn't answer your question (my issues were all exterior), but prior to handing over my bag to them, I brought it in and showed it to them, and they were very straightforward in telling me what they could and couldn't fix. I would definitely recommend bringing the bag to them to have a look at, and I think they'll be able to give you a good idea of what they can or can't do.

Yes, as far as I'm aware. It's more to do with Sharjah than Oman, it would seem.

Yeah, I've been getting those phone calls recently, too - I was shocked! Each time the taxi has arrived before the check-up call, and once I pre-ordered a taxi during a busy time and they called me in advance asking if it was OK to send the taxi early, rather than risk being late.

I love Burger Fuel, but it is one massive burger (great fries, too). I feel like I need to hibernate after. For something a bit smaller, I prefer Shake Shack (cheese fries are an added bonus). Although as mentioned, those are a bit fast foody. Maybe one of the steak houses here would have a good gourmet burger? Another option would be to make it yourself. I picked up Bobby Flay's cookbook "Grill It", and the burger recipes inside are unreal. Some of the best burgers I've ever had, at home or out.

Jordan? Nairobi? Tunis is surprisingly cheap and stable these days. Go to Goa? I would be hesitant of Goa, only because it starts to shut down in May due to the oncoming monsoon season, which usually hits by early June. No visa on arrival either. I usually get my India visit visa within about 72 hours, but I think they say it can take up to 10 business days.

Just spent 3 nights in Istanbul last weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect. Sunny and warm, but not too hot. Lots of 5* hotels available in both Sultanahmet and Beyoglu (I'm writing up a review of the House Hotel Galatasaray at the moment, it was fab). In either case you're less than 1 hour from the airport, and the flight was 3.5 - 4 hours. As for the protests, as long as you stay away from Taksim Square, there's no issue whatsoever. I strolled around the park/square and the atmosphere was more like a festival than anything, but I see the police have now re-entered the area. Although maybe you're looking for one thing beachy? I think it's going to be rainy around most of Asia now...

I would definitely not recommend Atlantis. We stayed there for a weekend last summer (living in Dubai though). Too crowded with package deals, food only average (Nobu, as well a s the breakfast buffet). Even at the summer rate I will never go back. Once you get into the water in Aquaventure, all is fine, but long queues and very hot. The sea in Dubai in summer is horrible. Like a warm bath. Thanks for sharing it, but if I found unbelievable price - is it still does not worth? Well, it really depends. I wouldn't spend another night there, I find it highly overrated. But if you don't mind the hugeness, impersonal, crowded atmosphere of the place, you could go I guess. But still, 989 for a night is a lot of money. Many Dubai hotels have summer deals. Maybe check them out before you decide. Agreed, I think it's wise to shop around right now. I just got an email through from Bab Al Shams resort this afternoon, and they're offering a rate of AED 808 (excl. tax) and you get breakfast, falcon show and camel rides at sunset and late (5pm) check out. And while I've never spent the night at Bab Al Shams, I rate it much higher than Atlantis. Nice setting, less chaotic, more intimate, and better food, I think. Although if you're looking for a beach stay, then BAS wouldn't really be an option for you. edited by laurelm on 10/06/2013

Hi, I spent a weekend there as a staycation last summer, and found it all decidedly average. While Aquaventure is a pretty good waterpark, and the water is cool enough, but standing in line is brutally hot and the cement walkways are foot torture if you put your sandals in a locker. The resort itself was mobbed with people (although it was an Eid weekend when I was there), check-in was tediously slow and chaotic. There are loads of restaurants, and the couple that I tried did not particularly stand out (Nobu and Ronda Locatelli). The rooms are large and comfortable, but again, nothing particularly memorable. There are a lot of package deals there, so at least you should get reasonable prices. But it's not a place I would recommend any of my friends or family to stay at. I think it's listed as a 5* property (I assume due to the facilities available on site), but I personally wouldn't consider it that. Maybe I'm alone, but I just think it's really mediocre.

"It does not apply to those on tourist visas." Ridiculous! From what it sounds like it's Sharjah that's causing the trouble, not Oman? That was my guess as well, else-wise I think we'd be seeing this nonsense at the other Omani borders, too.

I'm hitting up the islands in July-Aug! Can't wait! But, yes, as mentioned, no way will a direct flight take 10 hours from here. Should only take about 4.5 hours. Sounds like the flight you're looking at has a nasty layover somewhere. ETA: Emirates has a direct flight to Athens. Not sure about others...I'm flying Turkish Air with a layover in Istanbul. The journey time in total to Athens is about 7 hours. A bit of a nuisance but the arrival and departure times (in/out of) at Athens I found more convenient than Emirates'. There used to be a direct flight with Air Arabia (or was it Fly Dubai?), which was perfectly fine. I wish it was still offered, because I also couldn't bring myself to pay whatever it was Emirates were charging. edited by laurelm on 05/06/2013 edited by laurelm on 05/06/2013

Is it just one more episode this season? It always goes so quickly. Can't wait for next season though, and presumably, the Purple Wedding. I heard that they'll likely end the show at 7 seasons, though. Which is fair enough for the actors, but wonder how they'll do that? Find a way to wrap the whole story up or just leave it open-ended (presumably the books won't have finished by then)?

I love visiting places directly before or after monsoon. Because people are afraid of the possibility of rain, or the monsoon staying late or starting early, there are usually less tourists and better prices. ;) So, I visited there in May and thought it was great (October-November and April-May are also the best months for trekking there). I think Sept/Oct - April/May is the dry season. I think it'll be monsoony throughout India at that time, too. I'm not too sure about the monsoon around the rest of Asia.

I am pretty sure it is monsoon season then, so might want to consider that. If you're just staying in the Kathmandu area, then 5 days is more than enough (and I would recommend Dwarika's for the stay - incredibly lovely heritage hotel). There is lots to see in the Kathmandu area. Temples, cremation ghats, the Garden of Dreams is very nice, and you could walk around Thamel just taking it all in and people watch for ages. A short plane ride away is Pokhara, a really chilled out town on a lake and surrounded by the Himalayas. The jump-off point for the Annapurna treks. If you have the time to visit, it's definitely worth it, but I would be hesitant to fit it into a 5-day trip.

It's probably even more amazing now than it was 20+ years ago. Agreed! I went a few years ago and was astounded. I hope to return again, hopefully sooner rather than later. To the OP - the drive down is fine, rather pleasant actually. There are some neat forts you can stop at along the way (one that I recall is in a place called Karak), and shortly outside of Amman is the fairly neat town of Madaba.

Oooh, I am sorry! I've been getting this since I was a kid (but less the older I get). It's the worst - I have trouble sleeping for a few nights after because I'm so worried it's going to happen again. It is also occasionally called "Old Hag Syndrome", especially in cases where you think you can't move because you think a supernatural something is pinning you down with its weight. This is more often the type I get (OMG the worst, onceI thought it was a banshee atop me and wailing in my ear, but it ended up being the call to prayer I was hearing, when I finally snapped out of it). Anyway, very creepy yes, but totally harmless!

I don't know where you can get this done, but I spent a few years with micro braids (for synth dreadlocks). Yes, you can touch up your roots, but as another poster mentioned, it is not easy. I wouldn't really worry about your touching up your roots that much though, because from my experience, when having an unusual hairstyle, the last thing that you or other people notice are roots. Just make sure they're freshly touched up right before you get braided, and you should be OK until it's time to have them removed or tightened, about 3 months down the line. Secondly, if you are susceptible to headaches or migraines, I would not recommend getting micro braids, as they will very likely trigger head pain on a more regular basis, especially at the beginning and especially if you are getting extra hair braided in with your hair to add length or volume.

This has nothing to do with Shj, it is the Omani Tourism Board who have decided this. I just hope they don't apply all this rigmarole to the other Omani borders. I adore the place and often go on a whim, for a weekend morning hike or something. I'll be really disappointed if so.

Mildly curious. What's the reasoning for all this draconian requirements? Isn't Dibba that quiet little town on the East Coast where Wadi Bih is? Does it mean no more camping up Wadi Bih if you don't have a hotel booking? Yep, that's the place. And yes, as far as I'm aware no more camping or hiking at Wadi Bih. Which is a shame. We've been wanting to go to Wadi Bih and tried to pass through the Dibba border to get there [i'>justincase[/i'> about a month or so ago and were quickly and unquestionably turned away due to lack of hotel booking confirmation. Man, you're guess is as good as mine! I've not a clue. Because it's Sharjah there, my SO guesses it has something to do with their more conservative ideals than anything else. But that's just a guess, too. My company being...I fear they will make me use 2 vacation days when they see I'm going to Oman for a weekend, so I'll be celebrating a 5 year anniversary of unmarried happiness elsewhere, haha. ETA: The hotel booking and NOC rules are applicable only to those with UAE Residence visas. GCC Nationals and those on UAE tourist visas can cross and do as they please without hotel bookings or the NOC. This actually makes the whole thing more confusing to me. Why are only residents effected, esp when tourists aren't? edited by laurelm on 15/05/2013

As you know, the Dibba border has gotten more difficult to cross in the past year for UAE residents (you now need a booking confirmation from a hotel to get through, and the hotel then coordinates your border crossing) I have (well [i'>had[/i'> - canceled it now) a booking at Zighy Bay coming up, and was just informed that this week the Dibba border control added a new rule for single ladies - if a single lady wishes to cross the border at Dibba, in addition to the hotel booking and the other usual items, you now also need a letter of no objection from your employer stating that they allow you to to cross into Oman for the booked dates. Not the end of the world, but wanted to give my fellow single ladies a heads up!
