I've had a bit of a pain with my Standard Chartered CC and debit card. Similar to the below, whilst traveling abroad, after 1 purchase, my card(s) got blocked. With 10 days of travel ahead, I called and called and pleaded with them to unblock the card on multiple occasions, and they kept telling me that my card had no block, it was the Swiss card machines and ATMs that had the problem. Arrive back in Dubai, card still doesn't work. They finally admit to blocking it and then reprimand me for not informing them that I was planning to use my cards abroad - when in fact I had, as I always do. Needless to say, I was extremely upset with the bank over the entire situation.

You can also try a place called Collage (in Dubai Mall / www.collage.ae) if you want to compare prices. I've gotten some work-related stuff done with them and the quality looks good to me.

I really like The Farm! Very beautiful. I haven't been to it since just after it opened, or since summer has gotten into full swing, but my understanding was that they were to enclose the outdoor seating area to suit summer visitors, which should still be nice.

You only e er do this sort of thing once, you get caught out and then remember forever. Ain't that the truth! I forgot my passport once on the way to the airport - an hour & a half drive away. Needless to say, I missed my flight, but I am extraordinarily aware of the whereabouts of my passport at any given time now!

As far as I'm aware, yes - 6 month validity is an international requirement. In any case, I work under the "better safe than sorry" frame of mind where international travel is concerned. In fact, my current passport doesn't expire until April 2013, but I just applied for a new one last week because I'll be traveling every month August-December or January and didn't want to take any risks. Edited to add - I have heard of people using their passports with only a couple of months left and getting into countries fine; I've also heard of people on the brink of hitting the 6-month deadline and getting turned away. I think it may partly depend on the mood of customs in whatever country on any given day. edited by laurelm on 19/07/2012

I think it's available at Valleydez HIH Wheres Valleydez? Do they have a big range or just a few bits? Valley Dez in in Wafi. I'm sure if you phoned them they'd be able to let you know what sort of stock they have available for the brand - I've found their customer service to be very good.

I loved CKP, all what they have on the menu is awsome... I used to liek Round table pizza but not sure where r they nowadays!!! We like Lucky's in Motor City as well, they r fast and the pizza tasted good even next day... for me, if the food taste good next day is an indicator that it is good enough I recently tried Lucky's in Motor City for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! While still not standing up to the pizza I'm used to back in the states, the types of topping mixes did remind me of pizza back home, and the quality wasn't too bad at all. I just wished they offered a larger size of pizza.

As someone who worked in the food sector of an amusement/theme park in her youth, I would also recommend using extreme caution when looking to eat...um, anything (but I recall the pizza & burger situation being particularly bad) at an amusement or theme park.

Hi Ladies, Thank you so much for the details below..I am now looking at the following as per all your advise and will narrow it down by calling the restaurants to find out further details: 1. Mezza House (near Burj Khalifa), 2. Loui's (down Town), 3. Shakespeare on Sheikh Zayed, 4.W on Sheikh Z, 5. Shu on beach road Ideally I would want a bar type place with licence only because we want to make a night of it so go late after dinner and relax there so looking for a nice bar type atmosphere and not necessary for people who are there to eat and leave..We aren't planning to have dinner..just shisha, desserts, drinks..Ive already been to Reem Al Bawadi but again its a very restaurant type atmosphere and you don't really get a chance to mingle with other people..i know we are better off going to a bar but we do want to have shisha.. If any of you can help me narrow down my options from the above, please do assist. Thank you so much once again Loui's is not licensed. I've never tried their dessert, however I work very near to them and have had their food for lunch many times and have each time regretted it (leaves me feeling disgusting, and as if I have a brick in my stomach). It is a nice location though, and their shisha smells lovely!

If they're designer I personally wouldn't risk it. There is a new store that reconditions and cleans bags professionally - they're in the new Sunset Mall on Beach Road - let me see if I can find their info They're called "My Bag Spa", but I don't know any contact # off-hand. I know they have a website though. I haven't used them personally, but keep meaning to drop my Balenciaga bag off with them for a nice refurbish/re-dye! FYI - I once took the above-mentioned bag to Primavera in Dubai Mall (recommended to me by Balenciaga staff) for a cleaning, and wasn't really satisfied with the results.

Ah the Thamel area has amazing little shops with great stuff to buy... a lot of it handmade and unique. They have a number of interesting fleece-crafts - toys and ornaments, and clothing made of this really beautiful stiff fleecey fabric. And quite a number of Tibetan shops where you can get original music bowls, paintings, statues, cds of original nepali & tibetan music. Its the capital of serious trekking so lots of very good and cheap North Face products, hiking boots, coats etc too. But yes it is very polluted and very poor, but if you are using taxis etc you may be ok. I presume you are getting your visa on arrival? To speed up this laborious process, best to take a bunch of passport photos with you and also they only accept US dollars for the visa fee (you can change them and also have pics taken at the airport but could add an hour if there is a queue) so take dollars with you in cash. edited by hilsbils on 09/07/2012 Shopping is indeed great there, loads of interesting inexpensive items! I would however, not recommend any of the cheap (knockoff) North Face & the like items. I trekked the Annapurna region/Annapurna Base Camp of the Himalayas and met a few trekkers who had purchased some of these items, each of whom regretted it in retrospect (not actually thermal, items easily break or rip, etc.). The only knockoff item I trekked with was a walking stick, which did not make it to the end of the trek, and had started acting faulty almost immediately! There are genuine stores on the border of Thamel where you can get authentic products from Mamut and North Face and the like, but the prices are pretty much the same as they'd be in the US or UK (but cheaper than if you were to buy something like that here). In any case, if you're not going trekking, it's not really a hugely important thing to note, but even so if you're looking for good quality sporting goods to take away with you, I would be wary of the inexpensive items in Thamel.

I'd recommend loose, comfortable clothes for the heat. I wore a lot of maxi dresses and flowing trousers with tank tops. Always kept a shawl on hand in case it seemed necessary to cover up more. I'd just advise that as far as trousers/dresses/skirts go, make sure they aren't so long they drag on the ground because saying it's dirty is putting it lightly. I was about to get into writing a list of recommendations, but then I remembered that I blogged about my visit there - you can see what I enjoyed and would suggest here: [url=http://lmunshower.com/2010/05/24/kathmandu-nepal/'>link[/url'>. I hope you enjoy your time there! I totally fell in love with Nepal and would love to make a return trip to Kathmandu!

Any other comments ladies? None else has said the three magical words first? I have twice, to results that made me very happy. No regrets at all. I think it quite silly to think that women shouldn't or couldn't say it first. It might be worth adding that in both occasions, we had been dating/in a relationship for a while already. It was months down the line, not a friend or colleague I suddenly spilled my feelings to. That I don't think I would be able to do! edited by laurelm on 08/07/2012

Fave: Indonesia - so much to explore, stunning temples, lush nature, friendly people, wide range of lovely guesthouses and lux resorts (I would only recommend avoiding the trains). I've only been to Java and Bali but am dying to return, and hopefully check out Sumatra as well. Dream: Island-hop around Polynesia (massive fan of tiki/exotica kitsch); particularly interested in Moorea, as it's apparently one of the few islands where traditional Polynesian culture still survives.

why do they call it the god particle. That will cause alot of problems lol I agree, I dont like it being called that either. Apparently prof Higgs is an atheist and he dislikes it being called that as well . Read somewhere that it was supposed to be "goddamn " particle and the embarrassment to publish that resulted it in being shortened to god particle . * citation needed Yes, I read that somewhere recently as well, but cannot remember exactly where either! I don't know what the real deal or legalities about it are, but when I moved out of my flat (where I had painted bamboo on my 2 of my walls) earlier this year that I had been living in for about 2.5 years, a repainting fee was deducted from my deposit due to the color change. I couldn't be bothered to argue about it, so just let it be (it was only about 150dhs). However, I did feel it was a bit ridiculous because I thought they were meant to repaint the walls after each tenant moves out anyway?

I have both Wii & Xbox 360 Kinekt (although no children) and personally prefer the Xbox. I don't really use the Kinekt due to the types of games available - most don't seem to suit my age, but they look like they would be great games for a young girl. Dancing games, etc. I LOVE my Wii and the silly fun games available for it (many good for kids & adults), but the overall selection for Wii is definitely not as great as Xbox or PS3. On top of that, Nintendo's new console, the Wii U is scheduled to hit the market this autumn (November) so buying a Wii right now might not be the best move.

I moved to Dubai with the specific intention of trying to do a career change whilst here. It took a couple years (I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do - I just knew I wanted out of the industry I was in at the time - and waited and searched until I found something I felt really excited about) but in the grand scheme of things I don't think was too difficult. In any case I think it's probably easier to accomplish here than many other places; I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to have done this switch (as easily, or without taking a substantial pay decrease) back home in the states. I would say go for it! Especially if you are unhappy with your current career, it's got to be at least worth a try.

Thai Kitchen brunch in Park Hyatt is nice, reasonably priced (should be around 260-280 I think), and usually on the more civilized side. In my opinion, it's best when the weather is cooler so you can enjoy sitting creekside, but is still nice if sitting indoors. It's also not a buffet which I think is a huge bonus. There's a menu of items to choose from, but we generally just ask to bring us all the items on the menu through the afternoon. I went, had been dying to go for ages, was SO disappointed, terrible slow service! Ah, that's a shame! I've been about 3 times, never had any problems. I've gotten bored with the food, but, eh.

Yes I do believe you will be charged roaming fees, if you're on a UAE mobile account and do not have an international data package. I don't have an international data plan on my BB, but on occasion when abroad I'll still hook my BB into someone's free wifi. While the wifi is free, the data usage to access FB, get emails, or browse the web most certainly is not.

Bit of a disappointment, but I'm still interested to try them, and hear others' opinions. I agree - I cannot stand Spinneys meat either. I find their chicken particularly unappetizing. So hard to choose just one! Del Posto, in Meatpacking & one of Mario Batali's, was wonderful and great for a special occasion. I give the 7-course tasting (100-layer lasagna!!) a heartfelt thumbs up. Another really fantastic option is Blue Hill in Washington Square. It's not as fancy or as much of a special occasion restaurant as Del Posto, but truly excellent all the same. I'm looking forward to my next visit this October and have been eyeing up Jean Georges in Columbus Circle, which I've heard great things about. Now, I've not tried the Morimoto in NYC, but it was hands-down my fave restaurant in Philly during my years as a Philadelphian. Wonderful Japanese (better even than any of the Nobu's I've tried in NYC & Dubai), and I think restaurateur Stephen Starr is brilliant. It'll definitely be a more upbeat and fun atmosphere than the other places I've mentioned.

Satwa is a wonderful area to live in! I lived there for a couple years, but recently moved to AR, and miss Satwa a great deal already. My only real complaint was regarding traffic. Not so much rush-hour traffic, but on the weekends and evenings, guys would tear and screech down the street under my flat's balcony in loud cars, and that got really annoying. Also, National Day in that area is a nightmare (if you're trying to get in or out via car during the evening/night - forget it). But otherwise, I don't have enough good things to say about living in Satwa. The main reason I moved is because I wanted a yard and some grass for myself.

Just keep on them! In March, my Terim oven died as well and it only got fixed 2 weeks ago! It was very inexpensive (375 dhs all told - service & new limiter part) but there was much pain and suffering involved in actually getting them to DO anything. I spent a lot of time ringing them with little response. It didn't help that the guy originally working on my account went on holiday without passing the job over to anyone, and after that it was weeks to get anyone else to try to help me out. It was an extraordinarily frustrating experience.

This may be a stupid question, but could you bring an infant (9 month old)? I wouldn't bring the baby out on the drives, but could we make it to the hotel safely? TIA I don't know how it is for all of the resorts/camps, but the one I was in, it was an unavoidable and brief (30 mins?) safari drive to get from the landing strip to the hotel. Some hotels have a landing strips basically on the doorstep of the resort, which I imagine would make things easier. I found the domestic plane ride to be a bit hairy though, to be honest. I usually have a pretty strong stomach, sickly enjoy turbulence, and have never had problems on puddle jumpers in other not-so-modern countries like Nepal or Indonesia, but that flight from Nairobi to the Mara (and back again) made me feel super, super unwell. Again, I didn't travel with children but the info might be useful to consider.

Yes! I went on Masai Mara safari in November (stayed in one of those permanent tent resorts) and thought it was perfect. Good weather, lower season (as shortly after migration) so less tourists and it was also birthing season so lots of cute baby animals! A 4x4 is a definite. I cannot imagine doing it in a van, I think that would really take away from the experience. I did it for 4 nights as well, which I felt was spot-on. Exactly enough time to get to see the Big 5, plus so much more! I never thought I'd say this - but I actually got bored of seeing lions; they are everywhere! I sorted the trip out all on my own, so can't say anything on packages or operators - I have a horrific aversion to package holidays and things like that - but there is very little to sort out, IMO. All of the resorts, from what I saw, basically included everything in your daily cost. Full board, guide, 2-3 safaris per day (in car), walking safari, a lunch/dinner in the bush, etc all included in the room & board rate. Personally, I did not enjoy the Masai village visit as to me is felt really contrived, but perhaps with kids it's a better experience? But it's all really incredible, I cannot recommend it enough. I went for my 30th birthday thinking it would be something neat to do for a special occasion but that I'd probably never have the interest to do again - I was wrong. It's a trip I look forward to re-experiencing one day.

I just moved into a 2-bed in Al Reem a couple months ago. Have gotten 2 bills so far: the first was just under 400 or 500 dhs, and inexplicably, the second and most recent was only about 350 dhs. Something is clearly wrong with that (I think the housing fee has not been added?), I believe though. Since I haven't lived there for a full year yet (and my bills appear wonky so far) I can't really help with a summer/winter comparison. edited by laurelm on 03/06/2012
