My son will start big school in August and I only just found out that the bus ride to school is nearly an hour and a half! So the plan is to drop him in the morning but he will need to do the bus ride in the afternoon, which seems a bit much to me. I know a few moms use Careem as an option but I am seriously considering moving closes to the school.. What do you moms do? Any parents with kids in Deira international school?

Madz.. I am sorry you had to experience that.I did too.. 3 times over.. And it left me with feelings I never really want to experience again.. I was angry/ sad/ upset/ emotional and a million other things all at once.. I am sure you know what I mean :) My son had speech delay and other needs which is why he is going to speech and occupational therapy... and he's doing great.. Take deep breaths and take one step at the time.. The right school will accept your child.. just keep trying and trust me when I say this.. He WILL get into to a great school

Thank you HorizonMum Both schools are within the 15-20 minute commute from where we live. On the fees, there is a 10k difference only in FS2 and then its a small difference. I am leaning towards DIS because he goes up to secondary school.. this whole process has been stressful enough! Any feedback on experiences at Deira International School would be appreciated!

I would love to know about these schools as well. We currently have offers at Deira International School ( Al Badia) and Gems Wellington Primary School ( Behind Shangri-La) and would love to get feedback from experienced mums:)

hey ladeelay, we just got the negative outcome today and I cried! So you're not the only one. I cried because I was just so angry! my son is ahead academically, numbers,, alphabets, shape, colours, continents, days of the week, etc etc. he knows them all. BUT, he is shy in new surroundings, as most kids would be and that stopped him from doing all the activities. I wasn't given any reasons as to why it was declined, but I'm guessing that's what it was. On top of that, yours is a June baby, as is mine, so they're probably the youngest FS2s in the classroom. I would love for mine to repeat so he can build his confidence, i think being the youngest in the class, he is overshadowed by the older kids? I'm so upset, my husband doesn't understand why, I just am. Not because of anything else, just because how unfair the system is. Big hug Ladida. I can't believe these schools. I am still looking and have no clue what to do. I had a "gems" school on my list and found out today we weren't even shortlisted based on the application!!! A piece of paper that I fill in generic details about my child. We are Indians so now I'm going to start assuming its about the passport we hold. If that's the case then shame on all of these schools and their management. Feel totally helpless right now. Any suggestions of schools with availability would be highly appreciated.

He's born in June and we applied for FS2. The school is Safa Private. Another child at his nursery got the same assessment. Plan B is to try at as many schools as I can - and hope that he gets into one that will help him during these formative years. Glowingcandle.. may I ask which school your child goes to?

It wasn't a gems school. They got back saying he is not "socially ready" So what does this mean? Do I hold him back a year? Does he re-do FS1?

So we just finished our first assessment and got an "unsuccessful" outcome - it's heartbreaking! Didn't know I would actually take this so personally :( What does that even mean? That my child was not good enough? They had limited seats and I may get a shot if someone gives up their spot?

Thank you for your replies. My son has made amazing progress with therapy - i have been on a few school tours, and they have been very supportive. I would ideally love to hold him back a year and give him more time (hes a June baby), but the schools have their policies regarding age. Once again, thank you so much for the advice.

i reached out to most schools, and all of them have said that they won’t be able to consider my child a year later as he would be 4.3yrs when he starts FS1 and will be in a class where some children may only just have turned 3yrs old. I'll have school tours scheduled soon and will have a chat with them.

Thank you for your reply Tru Blu! May I ask which school your child goes to? Most of the school application forms ask if your child had any sort of therapy in the past. I'm just worried if I fill that out, the application Wil go straight in a bin. Any experience here?

Thank you for your replies and suggestions.. @anondubai..I feel exactly the same. But a part of me was a little worried because he does spend more time with them while I am at work and felt that perhaps I was missing out on something? I do admit there was a time when I felt his speech was a little delayed. But he can repeat the lyrics to most of his fav songs and lines from his fav toons, and communicate what he wants. Some kids are just different with personalities as are adults.. To the ladies who dos opt for assessments, thank you for letting me know about your experiences. Will consider the therapists you listed as well. Motherhood is not easy!

Ladies My child is around 2 and a half years old and his teacher at playschool has concerns over speech and interaction with other kids. Our paed suggested I take him for as assessment, even though I do not necessarily agree with the teacher.. But I want to do what's best for my child. Does anyone have any experience with toddler assessments and what to expect.i do know that kids first is a popular choice as well as The Developing Child Centre. Any other suggestions of a particular psychologist or doctor that you have had a good experience with? Look forward to your suggestion!

My son starts nursery next week. He's 19 months old. He will have his meals at the nursery (he will be going to Emerald City). For those of you with your children at nursery, do they eat there? How does one ensure that they child has had a full meal there? Can you please share your experience?

Saha210, I know how you feel. I took the decision to put my son in a nursery vs a nanny. He will start in Jan. I'm finding it hard to come to terms with the fact I have to leave him there from 8-5.. I think I might be the one crying when he starts! But either ways, i will leave him with someone other than me.. I personally think it's better to leave him with people who are trained to take care if children than leaving him home with a nanny. It does give me comfort to read other moms comments on how their kids blossomed staying there all day. Good luck with your decision!

I am looking for nurseries for my son and Mon Eco-le is really close to where i live. We are a non-speaking french family, and when we visited the school, they only conversed in french. I know kids absorb and learn things easily at this age, but my son is just starting to speak! Since we are both working parents, we plan on keeping him at the nursery all day. The nursery in it self was lovely! Small, warm..and you can tell that people love what they do. Any other moms who have a similar experience? I would really appreciate you advice/ experience.

It's very straight forward to get a visit visa for a parent... You need a salary cert (mom 6k I think), a tenancy contract showing that you have a 2 bedroom apartment at the minimum, your last dewa bill. These visa is around a 1000 aed for 90 days non-extendable.. With a 1000 aed refundable deposit.

Thank you for your replies. SEY83, my bub already got the Rota vaccine. Will check for the Hep A vaccines. Anon, the reason why I ask if it makes a difference was because when I went to a private clinic after my baby got one of the hexa shots, and a separate drop for polio, the private doctor was a little surprised that they did that, because, according to him, they did not do that here any more. Not sure how far its true.

My son has his MMR vaccine shot coming up in June, and I am already started to get worried about it because my husbands nephew has autism. We have currently done all his jabs at the government clinics, and I was considering doing his MMR and chicken pox vaccine at a private clinic. What do you ladies think? Would it make a difference?

My little man started solids at 6 months. He is exclusively breast fed. I went back to work when he was around 3 months and we had no major issues with the bottle (we had to switch tommee tippe which he preferred to Avent.) However, once he turned 7 months, he completely refuses thie bottle. We tried putting on a faster flow teat, but he still pushes it away. He nurses before I go to work at 8:30 and nurses atleast 4-5 times when I get home at 6:00. I know milk is supposed to be their primary source of nutrition, and am worried he isn't getting enough. We do mix some of the milk in his cereals.. But all in.. He has around 5 ounces while I'm away.. Versus around 12 before.. Has anyone else gone through this?? Help! They say it could be teething... Or he's reverse cycling... I'm about to switch to formula just to see if that would work.. Although I want to nurse him for atleast a year edited by laydeelay on 16/01/2013

Great Thread! Things I wish I hadnt bought 1. Medela Swing Breast Pump - Im a working mom and i thought I could get away with using a single pump. Big mistake. 2. His cot - he prefers co-sleeping. and so do I after being away from him all day at work! We didn't really go overboard with our shopping, so its just 2! 3 things Im glad I bought 1. Medela PISA - a lifesaver! 2. Bebe au lait nursing cover - I thought this product was over priced for something that resembled an apron. This cover has been an absolute lifesaver. I now have 2! 3.Our Maxi Cosi Mila - its super light weight; we currently use it with our car seat. edited by laydeelay on 08/09/2012
