You can get Zoloft prescribed here... Dr Bernard Fischer is very understanding- google him and make an appointment- it costs about 400 dhs for an appointment and is maybe not covered by your insurance but have a chat with him and he'll let you know- don't add this worry to your other worries. As has been said not all pharmacies stock but he will be able to advise. HTH edited by Licorice on 21/02/2013

This thread made me remember my Grandma's house- and my dad telling us when they grew up they washed in the kitchen sink and there was an outside loo- that's only going back about 60 years... amazing how far we've come- or plumbing has! It was a big deal when they had a inside bathroom put in! As kids in the 70's we used to have a once a week bath (shared with siblings!) and like others have said it used to take ages for the boiler to heat it all up! Mum used to attack us with a face cloth at other times during the week. Guess that's why I love a big long, on my own shower now hahahahah! Maybe the poster below is referring to using the shower hose of the toilet not having an actual full body shower after a ahem "number 2"?? Amazing how times have changed!

This has made me laugh too... Years ago I sent my dad off to one of the little barbers and they did something setting his ear hair on fire... Rubbed with some liquid and then whoosh! They called it full "clean face" anyone else heard of this?

I know what you mean sometimes you feel obliged to and they look at you funny if you say no... Sometimes I have one if I'm going out afterwards if not I just say no need thanks I'm going straight home not going out anywhere its a waste and they are ok with it. Just make light hearted of it and don't feel shy... It's your hair and your money and your time too... That's a good excuse too... Not got time soreeeeee! Hope that's helped a bit :)

Oh dear... I'm over 40 with longish hair... Am gonna get it chopped now... Hahaha only joking. I really think as long as you make the most of what you've got don't sweat the small (or large stuff) There is something beautiful about all of us... Young or old, fat or thin, whatever hair we have.... Don't waste your time worrying about all this... Love the skin you're in and live life to the full :)

Hi narjess... We didn't get asked for ID they only wanted it as per the tickets for the person who bought the ticket and the credit card used... So not for all your guests... Take your own just in case but you probably won't get asked.... Enjoy yourselves :)

Just got back from the 6pm show and thanks so much for the advice! The show was amazing! Re queueing the were seperate queues tonight for silver and gold...we were gold and had got there at 4 as recommended and there we only about 50 gold people already there... The silver queue started to build from 4 and got very long quite quickly. They started letting us in at 4.30. It was fine queueing quite orderly and not too hot. If anyone is taking elderly or disabled guests they seemed to be letting you in first if you have a word with them.... If you get there early. They let gold people into the arena area first.... You can get refreshments quite easy then...have to buy tokens then get what you want. Didn't see what it was like after they let silver people in... Am sure was fine. Probably best to get your seats first and then send someone off to get supplies :) The view would have been great from wherever you were and the show was wonderful... Amazing acts and singing and the clowns were good... So nice to hear kids laughing out loud so naturally :) Getting out... The traffic had built for the next performance so that side of the road was jammed... The metro would have been so easy to pop on or as we did crossed over szr by the metro bridge and got a taxi on the other side straight away. HTH too :) and if you go have a fab time

Our whirlpool washer went kaput last week... Don't know how old is cos it came with our flat.... Have used Jim'll fix it for repairs for stuff im the past but saw a new company Care and Repair advertised on here so gave them a call... They came at night and had a look... 100 dhs call out fee for first hour.., and bingo they fixed it! It wasn't spinning or draining... Motor was flooded apparently.... So we now have one working washing machine for just 100 dhs! Call someone out to look at it before u buy a new one it might be an easy fix :) they said they'd tell us if it was non reparable so worth a punt.... www.careandrepair.ae is their website. edited by Licorice on 13/01/2013

I've been and thought it was really quirky! The lovely guy who was selling the tickets told us lots about the cars when we asked.... There was another family in and he let us all go in the biggest car that has rooms in it. So ok it's not your normal zooty flashy modern type museum but we found it quite amazing...it's more of a giant storage facility for the Sheikhs private collection that has been very kindly opened to the public... It's out in the middle of nowhere and the back story is fascinating.... We'd seen it on Top Gear and just fancied a nice long drive to somewhere different and actually had quite a laugh there... It's quite nice to go somewhere off the beaten track and to somewhere not many people have been. The larger cars and vehicles outside are amazing too and there's a plane parked out the back... Makes a change from the work/brunch/ back to work rut you can get in... Take the camera and get some really fun pics! If you can tie it in with a trip to Liwa as well that might make it more worth the drive for some.

Just to say- no we have not had the professional sprayers in and wouldn't as we have a cat... so not going to kill any neighbours pets or anything! We are very considerate neighbours anyhoo! We live in Fox Hill above the cafes so wonder if it's that- they deffo come up the sink drains. We've used roach hotels (which MC Spinneys have now sold out of- wonder if it's cos there are a lot??), borax powder, bay leaves and pifpaf.... seem to be gone now... fingers crossed!! (I might sound calm but am not- hate the little blighters!! Just done a lot of googling on different things to do!) The marble drop and roll is definitely the pipes... there was a big thing about it in Singapore- people thinking it was ghosts etc.... google it it's quite funny all the investigations! And hello to all fellow MC-ers! Love living there despite the odd creepy crawlie and mysterious noise :) Hope they fix the trees and plants soon- such a shame to see them die!

Thank you so much everyone... He's been to the docs today and been prescribed Zoloft.... So good there is some positive action. It takes about 4 weeks to kick in so fingers crossed...I've been on a girly night out tonight for the first time in months and let my hair down so that's good too. I've been going down the spiral with him... And I need to be at the top to pull him back up. It's such a devastating illness. Emmsie... I don't think you are a hairy hippy.... Really appreciate your advice... Will look into that too... I'm open to anything! Going to get the bikes out again next week too.... Exercise is always a positive thing. It's just hard cos I know I have to be the strong one but am feeling anything but that but I have to be the one to snap out of it in order to help him... Will have to screw my courage to the sticking post and get on with me being the strong one. Thanks hilsbil too will check them out... The doc has said he doesn't need counselling bcos its the same thing as last time... Serotonin deficiency which comes in a cycle... But I think i need someone to talk to so I can help him properly and snap out of my slump. Cannot thank you all enough... I feel so much better and less guilty now! Thank you thank you for being so understanding and supportive!

Ah thank you both so much for coming back so quickly am sat here crying my eyes out cos don't know what to do. It's hard to tell family or friends cos there is such a stigma and don't want anyone to treat him differently... You can feel so alone here. He's had meds and counselling before we met so hopefully he'll start the road to recovery from there and I am going to have to be strong for him.... Will check out that website and book too. Been googling and there's loads of advice for the person with the depression not the people living with it... Will keep looking... It's like living with a cardboard cut out of the man I fell in love with... So hard to witness... Will get stronger for him... Maybe I just needed weep! Thanks so much again!

Hi little old me, Really feel for you.... I was alone in a wheelchair here for about 8 months and what was amazing was how much you could get delivered/ picked up from your house... I reckon t would be possible to never leave your house :) :) Anyway here's some ideas.... Get a maid agency to help with he cleaning etc. you can get food and supplies delivered by early bird... They are great...if you have any little grocery stores near you they deliver too, you can get your washing picked up and delivered back by many dry cleaners... So much can come to your door. You could have an agency maid for a few hours and take her to the supermarket with you to help you shop and pack etc am sure she would understand :) Take full advantage of all the help you can get and ask friends if they could help you out too. Keep your chin up and hope you feel better soon!

Hi! I've just started and been looking everywhere- found two places so far- one craft shop in the green mall on Jumeirah Beach Road- near the flag pole end- it's the little mall with Burger King in it- shop is on ground floor and also Creative Hands in the Green Community- both these stores have some fab things! Have also been ordering online as can be slightly cheaper. Sorry they not in the areas you are looking for but thought I would share anyway! What are you making? I am doing mini chip board albums- they are looking so cute!!

I've used Dial A Nail for their manis and pedis and always been really happy with them... I defected there after I got fed up of shoddy service in the Greens Community Center salons... I really liked it at Dial a Nail cos it was a lot calmer and much better service... The girls remember you from last time and are just nicer... Gellish nails always done nice and done some paraffin foot treatments too which were great. Not tried the waxing though so will deffo give that a miss.... I think you have to find different salons for different things... It all depends on the experience of the staff I reckon!

Hi Lilia, Here's some idea of cost of living for a singleton in Dubai- these are averages of course- I was on salaries between 12- 16,000 a month during my single phase and was absolutely fine. 1 bed in The Greens- 54,000 per year= 4,500 AED per month Dewa- 350 AED per month Du- TV, net & land line- 279 AED per month Etisalat Blackberry package- 249 AED per month Food Shopping- 800 AED per month Eating Out- 800 AED per month Cleaning Products- 200 AED per Month Car- 2,000 AED per month Petrol- 400 AED per month Salik (toll charges) 200 AED per month Clothes, make up, toiletries- 800 AED per month Maintenance- a company like Jim'll Fix It will come out for a call out fee of 200 AED and then charge you parts and labour after the first hour on top of that- most things should be covered by the landlord though really. Check Carrefour website online and you can see all the prices of white goods on there- you can get a basic washing machine for under 1,000 AED- I got one for about 700 AED. Furnishings- prices vary widely- try Home Centre & Ikea- they have very reasonably priced items- if you want more expensive try The One and Q Home decor. Try and get somewhere that white goods are included- that can help save costs. You could do a whole flat from 5,000- 10,000 AED depending on your taste and where you shop! You also don't need to get everything at once- you can get the essentials and build it up over time. Ikea has their online brochure so you could cost it out from there to get a rough idea of the total cost for this and white goods. Deposits- usually 5% of annual rent to the landlord- if you use an agency there's another 5% agency fee to be paid as well. Paintng would be about 3,000 AED for a one bed apartment. Other costs would be flights home, entertainment, DEWA deposit- 1,000 AED...can't think of anything else! Hope this helps a bit!

Hi USAInd, Don't worry- we've all been in the same situation when we first get here- some people are tough and just get on with it but some of us need a gentler approach. It is quite normal here for people not to speak to their neighbours but totally understand you wanting to feel safe and just to know there is someone who could help in an emergency- there's nothing wrong with feeling like that at all... they just might not understand that and not feel the need to be social. The ladies below have given some great advice about going to mums and babies groups and finding things to do... it might take time for you to feel confident but you will find a group of friends eventually- we all do :) You're going to have to be brave and ready for any knock backs- don't take them to heart- and I bet one day you'll have friends coming out of your ears :) Good luck with it all!

Dear Ashesc, Sorry you have had to go through that- it's not very common so hopefully won't happen again! It is hard when you are new here as sometimes you have to act what would be considered "rude" in your home country.... ie ignoring someone when spoken to, speaking sternly, even shouting! Basically just be polite but firm to any taxi driver who is trying his luck- never sit in the front on your own- with others in the cab you should usually be ok! (apart from this time of course!!!) Don't start a chat, don't feel you have to answer any questions- most are innocent inquiries to pass the time but some aren't.. they usually start "Are you married?" I always say Yes and to a big strong man and I have 3 kids- puts them off! Don't be afraid to speak up and say excuse me please don't talk to me, or I am busy- please concentrate on driving- or to call/ fake call your husband in front of them or just play with your phone in general. If they drive too fast tell them to slow down too! If you at ever feel in real danger call the RTA while in the cab or get him to pull over and get another cab. I've had a few things happen over the years but they are rare and you develop a radar for them eventually. I've been here for 10 years and probably had 5 slightly dodgy drivers out of the thousands of cab journeys I've taken. Be strong and confident and you should be ok. Hope that helps you a bit- don't worry about it too much and report him to the RTA hotline- there is also a confidential help line called Al Ameen if you ever feel uncomfortable about something here- as you're new you might not know about it.... http://www.alameen.ae/en/default.aspx If you are feeling a bit nervous for a while you can get taxis with lady drivers- they are available at the airport but you can book them http://dtc.dubai.ae/en/OurFleet/Pages/Ladies-and-Families-Taxi.aspx Don't worry and hope your next taxi driver is nice and polite to restore your faith :)

Don't know what your totally looking for but here's what I could recommend... I have just grown cucumbers, chillies and gherkins from seed and they are growing like crazy- if that's the sort of thing you are asking about? They love the heat and humidity- unlike my tomatoes which are dying a death boohoo! It's a bit hot for most things now- have brought all mine in under the shade as they were getting burnt in the midday sun. One that is doing well in the sun though is Tradescantia- or purple heart- that seems to be able to stand it- has cute pink flowers every now and again and seems to survive anything! Most flowering plants won't be able to stand the heat over the summer as they are delicate. Hope that helps a bit :)

Hi Spicy Pepper, we just moved- it cost 2,500 dhs for the removal- that was including packing as well for a large 2 bed flat.... used Wales Packing. Other costs- DEWA deposits- 1,000- 2,000 AED, plus paying off final bill from last place, deposit for new place- usually 5% of rent, agency fees 5% of rent, new DU or Etisalat charges... think that about covers it- cost us about 12,000 dhs in total to move. Think that's about everything to consider! Good luck with the move!

I've always wondered this so please don't bite my head off for asking... Don't you worry about the hygiene standards of these bake at home cake makers? They're not legal I presume so don't bake from a municipality licensed kitchen and have not undergone all the extra medical screening tests that you have to to work in a food outlet. I don't think I'd feel comfortable getting a cake from them but obviously people do. Wonder how they "get away with doing it" too?

Hi AmyAus, I was in a wheel chair for a year here and did get some slightly strange reactions but as another poster here has said- use it as a chance to educate. I got people patting me on the head, people asking whoever was with me what was wrong with, people giving the change in shops to whoever I was with when it was me handed the money over and people asking me where my maid was when I was out on my own.... But you know what I have also never had so many people of all different nationalities help me out, smile at me, talk to me and the taxi drivers were absolute legends. So keep your sense of humour intact, explain nicely to people if anyone asks and enjoy the help and assistance you will be offered.... If it makes you be more mobile and actually get out and about that's a brilliant thing for you and your quality of life. Hope that's helped a bit :)

So hang on as much as you can you can offer it out furnished or unfurnished to start off with and see who bites... A lot of first time moving in together couples don't have furniture etc so are looking for furnished.... Plus with the economy they might not be able to afford. See what happens.

I know it freaks people out but there are cockroaches most everywhere in the middle east.... In your home too. It's not the same as elsewhere like the UK for example where you would have to be the filthiest kitchen ever to have cockroaches. Here they are just a fact of life. Not to detract at all from what a horrid experience it must have been.... I once had one fall off the ceiling in an Indian restaurant into my curry...a big one! And yes it freaked me out but I didn't stop going there... It had probably just flown in from somewhere... They are crafty things! I just looks at it as a hopefully once in a lifetime experience and moved on otherwise you'll never eat out again. You should really complain about these things to the restaurants direct and get the municipality involved its wrong to ruin their reputation on a public forum about what could have been a one dff unfortunate incident and if you can see their kitchen is clean thats a bonus.

Why don't you send a courier to the villa with a letter to the occupier asking him if he knows what is going on? He might be merrily thinking the rent is paid and not have a clue the cheques are bouncing? Do you have a land line in the villa? Do you know the phone number? You could call and ask him for help? There is also a debt collection agency here you could ask them to find the company for you... Quite a few options that you can do from afar.....feel for you must be such a worry!

Hi Sal 123, I've been and its fabulous- it's really a giant spa pool in a cave type dome building with all sorts of jacuzzi jet areas within the pool and the rain forest walk thing is a walk round some cave like corridors that surround the pool with all different water treatments- different kinds and temperatures of showers, saunas and steam rooms.... and an ice room you can rub yourself down with ice! Eeek! Anyway I guess that you would be able to do most of it- maybe not the saunas or steam rooms but there will be enough to enjoy. It's very peaceful there- have a great time! HTH Licorice
