Hi Chocobella, I wasn't agreeing or anything- I was just trying to calm this down actually having been one of the first people to answer this post at the beginning offering reassurance to the OP- and I also always try and think of a reason for things- why people do and say things- so was just trying to think of an explanation and look at it from both sides. Did not mean to contribute to the argument in any way... the word is out there- she didn't make it up- I wouldn't ever use any terms like that as really believe it's horses for courses and we all follow our own path. You actually mentioned about reversing the situation and I was commenting on that- that yes I get called "insulting" things or asked "insulting" questions because I don't have kids... which is also wrong- none of us should judge another's life and sometimes you have to get a tough skin to deal with it and lots of people use what they consider to be humour. Was trying to point out maybe it was meant in a humorous way and to maybe not be so harsh- not trying to detract that it can cause offense- as it is not a very nice word at all- maybe I didn't explain myself properly. I was just trying to see a reason why that word has been used and explain a little bit- not that I would ever think that way! Sorry if I have caused offense now it wasn't meant that way at all!

Oh dear how did this thread get to this? Anyway... I think Lamali was using the term in a humorous manner and it's been taken the wrong way.... Don't forget not everyone's first language is English and reading the rest of her post she has said she didn't mean it that way..... Don't think she's attacking all mums out there. Sometimes as a single person no kids you have to build up defences so you don't end up being a considered a freak.... There is a lot of pressure here on people who don't fit the married with kids bracket and they do face a lot of questions.... So maybe the term is used as a meant to be funny bit of a defence mechanism... It can be tough here socially when people assume you should be married with kids and you get asked what your husband does as a first question sometimes... Inside you can be really upset by it but you just have to try and laugh it off.... And I have been called barren, spinster etc and terms that are upsetting.... You end up leaving somewhere feeling like an utter failure and there's something wrong with you. So to wrap up... Lamali probably best not to use that word in mixed company as it can cause offence! As Others have said we are all on different life paths and as long as you're happy that's the important thing :)

@angelinaballerina probably because if you say no they start telling you you are very old and leaving it too late and will be left on the shelf! I have started actually telling the truth now which is I can't have children and that stops them in their tracks. No-one wants a taxi ride where you are made to feel like an old maid! It's bad enough if you tell the you are single!

Hi kateh, Don't you worry there are tons of people who are 40 and single.... I was one of them and yes people think its odd but we are not all on the same life path. I decided on my 40th not to worry about it and to live my life to the full..... I was quite happy to meet someone when I was 50 or 60 or never but I would have the best life along the way....about 3 months later I met the love of my life and we are getting married this year... So it can happen. I have lots of friends who are 40 plus and single too. Plus a lot of my married friends with kids used to say they wished they could do the things I was doing. So it's all horses for courses really. Just be strong and get on with your life and have loads of fun on the way. If people start questioning you laugh it off just tell them you haven't met Mr Right yet and do they know anyone they good they could hook you up with... Then tell them all the fab stuff you have been up to... Go travelling, get a hobby, do sports.... Go out when you want... Enjoy the freedom while you have it and you never know who's round the next corner... Life's an adventure. Hope that has helped a bit.... You're not alone and here is nothing wrong with you! Hi again! not that I saw- I can't remember properly though- it's not like here at all- very sleepy hollow but a fabulous break. I guess you could go to one of the other hotels for a meal if you fancy a bit of a change of scenery? Have a read at the Wiki entry they have some listed- I remember seeing a KFC now :) http://wikitravel.org/en/Salalah it says splurge for the Hilton meals but I don't remember it being expensive at all!

Hi egg! I stayed there about 5 years agao- it was lovely- had an amazing time in Salalah- so chilled and relaxed! The rooms were nice- balcony with sea view, lovely beach and the restaurant was good too- they had a barbeque under the moon one night- things might have changed in 5 years I guess but I can recommend! Have a great time if you go- make sure you visit the blow hole and the coconut groves and the frankincense forests and there was a cave somewhere too! HTH Licorice

Good luck Victorian- really sorry you've not had a happy experience. Life can be very tough here- lonely and isolating for a lot of people. Not all of us have the confidence or the inclination to get out there. Don't take to heart the "I'm alright Jacks" below- you can't help the way you feel about the experience you've had here. Everyone has a different experience after all... dependant on so many things and circumstances. Really hoping the future is brighter for you wherever you will be living now.

Hi curly22.... Just to let you know in case you don't that you should not employ a maid "on their own visa"... It's illegal and you can get fined up to 100,000 dhs . You need to sponsor one or use an agency. People have enn getting caught so please don't risk it.

Dear Emily, It's so great you want an adventure and to move here but you really do have to be careful- it is not the sort of place you can just rock up on your own and hope for the best- the advice the other ladies have given is great. I think the Emirates crew idea is a brilliant one- they will bring you over properly and look after you and you won't have any of the worries of finding accom, spending months looking for a job, running out of money etc. etc. You would learn new skills that will set you up for life and give you a great experience. Hi Aquarius, Just ignore the sarcasm... it is hard to find the info and you're wanting someone's personal experience too- so ask away! Got an email from Harbor Real Estate about Sulafa Tower where they are doing a rent to own scheme... looks ok so we're going to have a look... think the pitfall is to watch out for them being over market price and not getting 100% of the rent you pay put in as a deposit. They have some articles on their website http://www.harbordubai.com/press.php it's an interesting read... doesn't look like many developers are doing this at the moment. Will feedback after we've been for a look! HTH

Hi singing canary, I think you are best to break it down an work it out... I was on 12k as a singleton here 10 years ago and I was more than ok but times have really changed. We've just brought a young intern out on 8000 DHS but we're paying the accommodation part for her and hoping she 'll be ok... She's only here for 6 months so am sure she'll be ok! If you think about it... Accom is going to be about 3000, bills- dewa, Internet, tv- 600 ish, travel 1800 that could be car hire or taxis etc. Phone 500 a month... So looking at around 6000 DHS a month to cover all expenses and that would only leave 2000 dhs for everything else- food, toiletries, shopping, clothes, social life ....It's doable... but it would be a stretch... Maybe some would risk it for the experience of the job and to live abroad. It's amazing though how 100 DHS seems cheap for something but that's about 20 Gbp and money seems to fritter away out here! Hope that's helped put things in perspective a little bit :)

Just to throw in from a buyers point of view- the last few I have been to was totally not impressed with the goods on offer- things were not hand made, things that were were not attractive or quirky- but hey ho thats each to his own taste I suppose! I know as a crafter it must be hard to try and keep everyone happy but you must look at your product range and think is it really sellable? Would you really, really pay good money for what you are making and selling? Also agree there have been too many and people are getting faired out! Another point if it's a festive fair try and have some "festive" products for sale too- people go in a frame of mind and would like to buy festive things. Look at your set up too and don't just sit behind the stall looking bored- bit off putting- maybe bring part of a project with you to be doing makes it more authentic and creates a talking point too - breaks the ice with the customers when it's a bit quieter. Hope my two pennorth helps :)

Hi Snowflake, They only had thse colours in actual net- maybe they have more in another branch? They did have lots of colours in a similar gauzy material but it wasn't net net if you get my meaning- it was floppy and sheer but could be used- I think they had pink and mauve- there was about 15 rolls in different shades of that type. The branch at Oasis Centre is not that big- maybe give them a call? http://www.deepakstextiles.com/locations.htm I was doing mine for Halloween so was perfect for me- made one of those no sew tutus- looks ace! Wow this is all a bit extreme isn't it- I know we all have bad days- but come on let the guy get the 1dh.... they all add up- he must be so desperate. I know they can be annoying hovering etc. but it obviously must mean a lot to them. Some petrol stations the guys do get to keep the tip- can't remember which one though sorry! Some restaurants don't let the staff keep the tip either- such a shame.

It's well strange isn't it- I know it's not the same huge amounts but my bill is usually 260 dhs for a one bed flat- last month was 671 dhs and I was away for half the month and am hardly in the rest of the time- I did query it but they said ohhh maybe problem with meter ask building management to look- if DEWA come and look they charge you 300 dhs......... anyway decided to wait and see and this month's seems more like it... 171 dhs. Really strange why August was way too expensive! I have been panicking turning everything off! Don't like surprise bills! Hope next month's back to normal too! I am wondering if they estimate in one month and read it the next... such wide fluctuations are scary!

Hi Presam, I think you need to workout if you would actually be financially better off after you have factored in the day care costs for your child- a lot of people find that the extra money would be gone paying for care. You could maybe get a job that is based around school hours so that would reduce expenditure. That said a lot of people do it/ have to do it. It's such a shame there aren't more parttime jobs around. Hope some other ladies offer you some good advice, HTH

I always go early in the morning to avoid trucks and queues- set off about 5.30 am and get back from 9am- nice to see the mountains in the morning. It's really quiet at that time. HTH

Ohh dear! Tough one! Tell her that you meant she can choose something that will fit in with your theme- when you eventually decide what that will be....e.g. you may want her to wear red but she can choose a red dress that suits her- you're not dictating strapless/ halterneck/ long or short etc but you do want a colour theme/ something that goes with your dress style- to be decided and taking into account her colouring as well of course. Tell her you would like to go shopping together for it when the time is right, having a lovely girly time together and it's way too early for her to be picking her dress yet. What's in fashion/ available now may not be suitable come the date of the wedding. Maybe you take the bull by the horns and start sending her pics of what you would actually like to see her in- make it into a nice, fun thing. Have a budget in mind and if she does want to contribute more that's fine too- no way you should be spending more on her dress than on yours- it's ok to have a budget- every wedding has one so don't worry about feeling mean or anything- they are expensive things!! Also would recommend looking online- there are some amazing dresses you can get and they are so much cheaper than in the shops here. So she may be able to get something spectacular within your budget. Let her buy her own shoes too otherwise sounds like you will be getting stung with a bill for some Jimmy Choos too! Explain to her also what you need her help and support with- google wedding sites for bridesmaid responsibilities- have a get together with her and lay it all out- if she looks like she's not into it give her the opportunity to back out- she may not want to do any work and it will end up bein a nightmare for you. Remember above all- it's YOUR day- you're allowed to put your foot down :) HTH

Dear Ryas! Just ignore the not so nice comments- many people do come here without a job- you're not alone. It does take more time here to get a job- about 2 - 3 months on average as things do tend to move slower. It may be hard to find a job in your exact field of expertise- if like you say you have other fields of expertise try in those areas. the job market is just waking up again after Ramadan and the summer so you will probably see more jobs appearing- keep checking the jobs section here on EW as well. Make sure you have a few different CVs that are appropriate and more focussed on your other areas of expertise when applying for jobs in those fields. For HR and Training have a look at some of the larger hotel groups like Jumeirah and also Emirates airline too- check out corporate websites as some of them do their recruitment through them instead of using agencies. Agencies are notoriously slow at getting back to you- they are inundated and have also been hit badly by the recession. Really hope this helps and really hope you do find something soon...just keep plugging away and fingers crossed for you :)

Thanks Joyce... my mum had a hysterectomy at 38 which brought on her menopause early so I have no natural family history to go on and I'm the eldest daughter so have noone to compare to. She had it bad though and still has hot flushes today at 63 cos she came of the HRT after all the scares. It's the mood swings that are getting to me the most- I am usually really happy go lucky except for one or two days a month so you can imagine I am not feeling the best- I like to understand things so I can deal with them. Hate feeling irrational and emotional for no reason- my poor OH is really getting it in the neck! Bless him! Have heard of black cohosh- will maybe wait till have seen a doc so I know what it is. I live in The Greens and absolutely love it- real community feel. Parking is an issue- if I have visitors after 6pm it is hard for them to find somewhere to park. If one car is getting home earlier than that you would be ok and use the apartment parking for the later arriving car. There are duplex apartments next to Golf Towers along the lake- the do look lovely! If not you may be thinking of the the groud floor courtyard apartments which have a large yard and a gate to get out to the swimming pool and community facilities- some of these apartments are lovely! I wish I had a ground floor one! Try and get a non- roadside apartment if you can- the inner ones have a nicer view and feel imo. Everything you need is here and within walking distance too! Great for keeping fit and active! I hardly use my car these days! Never smelt any "whiffs" but it depends on your neighbours and what they are cooking I suppose!! Maybe visit around dinner time to double check! I would highly recommend living here- good luck with your search!

I think Jobs in Dubai have been proved to be a bit of a scam as they are charging money up front- have a google and you will see...would not recommend using them You could try Bayt, MonsterGulf, Gulf Talent...... also a lot of companies are not using agencies due to costs so you could try going onto the websites of companies you are interested in and have a look at their careers sections- that worked for me! Gulf News has an active job section too. HTH
