My question mainly is if you are british and muslim but you dont want your assets etc divided according Shariah law, can I have a UK compliant will so that I get to specify who gets what, and will it still be legally recognised here? Hope this makes sense..... edited by LMAO-DXB on 09/09/2013 As far I know, this Shariah law will only apply to your assets in the UAE, not abroad. Anything that you don't want to be divided according to Shariah law (faraid?), don't keep here. This is how I understand it also. It would apply to monies kept here, cars, houses etc in uae

I'm having lots of problems with them too they used to always come every wednesday and about a month ago just stopped, every week I have to call them and complain they say no problem all fixed they will be there next Wednesday but never show up. Last week I couldn't even get through to them on the phone at all and emails bounced back as mailbox full! Useless. I ordered online, it came the next day, I guess this is the only reliable way to do it for now.

We got one from ikea two years ago, we keep it outside and everyone said it would die but its thriving. We keep it in the shade, it grows very fast. I didn't expect it to last this long.

The cheapest one I found was Pets Oasis. It's run by a Swedish vet. It's 40 or 45 a day if I remember, and if over two weeks they do free pick up and return service. Our cat has always been fine there.

Email Paul the Finance guy on this site (click on finance tab above). He can give you free advice on all plans available inc Generali/Royal London/skandia etc. I know when we spoke to him he said he wouldn't recommend Generali as the fees are very expensive.

I worried about this vaccine a lot too but after weeks of research the pros far outweighed the cons. The autism study has been widely discredited. My dd had it at 18 months and was fine.

Before got married, DH and I always both worked full time and our money was always separate (im sure he liked it this way as he earned a lot more than me!). Anyway, since we had DD I stopped work and it was def an adjustment! At first DH would just give me the card when I asked for it for the supermarket etc, but it was too strange never having any cash. Then he gave me a card to his account but I didn't like how it texted him each time I used it! so now he gives me a set amount into my own account each month which has to cover everything from my petrol, all our food, bills etc and also anything that I want (nails etc). I about break even each month, which is fine, except when its his birthday, or fathers day, or xmas, it annoying as I never have spare cash to buy him a surprise or gift without him knowing, and its odd to ask him for an extra 1000 aed to buy him a present...with his own money... Other than that I love not working and am very grateful that he hasn't pushed me back to work, as DD is two now and I could easily return to the office, but as it stands don't want to trade my free time for extra spending money. If I moaned at him for more spending money I know what he'd say - get a job!

No chance - I need to be able to communicate well to people so that I know they understand and I understand them - with a new baby too - I want 100% confidential reliable and those that have a good grasp of the English language people looking after my baby. That is my opinion. Fully agree. One small mis-communication could cause a very big problem. Not worth the risk with a baby.

Dubizzle has lots of ads for all types of accomodation. I would avoid discovery gardens its a bit run down now. Check on booking.com too put in dates (28 days max) and you might get some good deals, serviced apts in barsha or tecom might work for you.

A driver told me that shift change time (in Diera) for taxi drivers it at 5am and 5pm so depending where in the city you are (which end) its often hard to get a taxi at this time as they are all heading back to head quarters for end of shift

Update: I am the OP. after a stressful and emotional first week my dd did indeed settle and now really enjoys her nursery mornings! I'm so glad I didn't quit. For anyone who goes through this, it's true what they say 99% of the time they do relax and settle with a week or two, even if they seem to hate it with a vengeance at first.

Huge congratulations! I found out v early on I was pregnant too. Is nothing much to do so soon. If u go too early for a scan thy have to do it internally which I didn't fancy so if you want a normal scan go when you're about 10 weeks for your first.

I am concerned about this too. The last paediatrician I saw said the flu jab can help protect from it. But I can't find anything online to back this up. My daughter is two. I read in the Mail that millions will travel to Saudi in the coming months for a religious pilgrimage and after that it may spread like wildfire around the world.

I booked a taxi for 5am once with a car seat, when I called again to confirm it the agent told me that the pink taxis who carry the car seats don't start shift till 5am at the airport, so would get to me in the springs at about 5.45am! The first agent never told me this. I don't think you can rely on one to come, it would be 50/50 depending on the area they are in at the time. We didn't use it in the end we got a lift with a friend.

I really liked Seashell nursery in barsha but it was full and there's a waiting list for sept. childrens garden was brand new and airy and lovely atmosphere but I had never heard of the cirriculum they follow, it seems the owner 'created' it herself and I'm not really sure how well it would lead into uk school cirriculum afterwards. As previous post/thread, my dd is now starting jebel ali village however I'm hating that there's no settling in period as such. They tell me they have done this for many years with 1000's of children and it works best...?! I've heard good things about Blossom nursery too.

Best buy was a camera monitor, great for peace of mind once they are in their own room which dd was from 8 weeks onwards. Great to be able to see them when you hear a noise rather than wondering what it was!

My dd is at jebel ali village nursery at the lakes. They have a no stay policy for dropping off. I did not realise this when I enrolled her. Last week was traumatic. I left dd for two hrs at a time. I'm hoping this week is better for her. Once she seems happier I will increase the time (she is registered 8-12 timings)

Thanks so much everyone for your replies Today was slightly better, my husband dropped her off, he's tougher than me and found it easier to leave! When we collected her she was playing for the first time all week and not crying! They said she had cried a bit here and there but the best day so far. I have high hopes now that she might settle next week. Feeling more positive that's for sure. What a difference 24 hours makes. I was up for never going back again yesterday....

I've been making a fuss and trying to get her excited about it. I pack her bag with her and today let her take a toy along. This morning I stayed half an hr but they were shuuing me out the door. She just seems to hate it there. I've never seen her like this anywhere. I think the staff think I'm being too fussy and need to toughen up. I just want to know if anyone else had this and if it got better?

My dd turned two last month and is enrolled to start nursery 3 days per week from sept. her nursery do a summer school so I'm sending her there to use it as a settling in period. So far its been horrendous! She cries as drop off, when they play outside she's fine but when they go in she cries and won't eat or relax or play. I didn't expect this as she's always been really confident and social and I don't see her for dust at mini monsters and such places. I've left her before at drop off sessions at another nurseries and no problems and she loves it. They won't let me stay with her they say its not their policy. Is this normal? How long should it last? I feel like quitting already as I don't want to end up with a stressed insecure child! I know I'm probably being sensitive but I really thought she would like it at least a little....

I live in the springs and mostly have no problem getting a taxi. You call and one is usually here within 10 mins. Occasionally though, say at rush hour, or Friday night, it can take around 40 minutes. There's no way to predict that's the thing. Depends if one happens to be in your area at the time to take the job.

If you move any uk pensions offshore into a sipp the wife/family get 100% of it if the policy holder dies. Uk pensions either cease to payout to anyone on death or reduce to half the amount. And once the wife passes the pension is finished. At least with a SIPP it can be passed to children, family, anyone you name. We have just moved out pension offshore into a SIPP because of this and to save us from inheritance tax and I feel much better.

I'm not sure in the wife's rights to the husbands pension in the case of divorce. I guess you'd want your saving plan in both names, rather than just hubby's to make sure you got your half. It's best of course to have your own plan but if you're a SAHM then this isn't possible. I know my parents divorced at 40, my mum now has no pension, as they didn't go to court and wanted to do it all amicably...my dad kept both the (his) pensions. She didn't think much about it at the time, just wanted it over with...

State uk pension will no way be enough to live comfortably on, if it even still exists in 10 years time. If you click on the 'Finance' page/tab on expat woman there are some good articles relating to retirement planning. And if you email Paul Jenkinson (details under Finance) he can give you some free advice and options on planning for the future/investing in property etc. He's really knowledgeable.

I don't really like them as in I wouldn't put my DD in them, however from a business perspective you could be onto something. I think it could do well here as you say. There are a lot of superficial and competitive mothers here there's no denying...! edited by lincolnimp on 23/06/2013
