vonvon would you be happy to send a quick email to sian.breastfeedingqa(at)gmail(dot)com regarding your experience? She has recently been in touch with the owner of organics regarding their BFing policy and would really appreciate knowing more about your experience, she can also pass on details to you regarding your rights as far as breastfeeding publicly in the UAE. Hi Kiwi! Is there anywhere we can access info on your rights with breastfeeding in public here, or could Sian maybe post it up on here somewhere? Im a new first time mom and have just started venturing out to the malls with my LO but don't really know where i stand with BF there and would hate to be put in a position like OP was as I know it will just put me off wanting to go out at all! Feeling pretty house-bound as it is and starting to go a little crazy!! TIA! :) xx

Congrats everyone! Great to read how well everyone is getting on with their new arrivals! Amy, Im so happy for you that everything was a breeze! Was thinking of you and hoping all would be ok! Well, our beautiful little bundle, Misha Fatima arrived safe and sound on 2nd July via c-section. Dr Elsa was amazing, as always, and Misha is healthy and happy! She's just the most amazing little thing I've ever seen and we're just so in love with her! I'm feeling great too (apart from the lack of sleep!). The c-section wasn't half as bad as I'd expected. Was up and out of bed same day. Had a few probs from my spinal but all sorted now and feeling like i haven't even had surgery! :) Bamby, it sounds like we got off to a similar start on the feeding front but thankfully we seem to have it sussed now. Hope things are getting better for you too! Good luck to all those who are still waiting to meet their little ones! Looking forwards to reading more updates! xx

No probs! Her email address is: [email protected] and her number is: 055 588 6298. She's really nice and seems to be really good. I know she also has quite a following on EW. She does get very busy but if you tell her you have been recommended her from someone in her antenatal classes it might help - i know she really values word of mouth recommendations. Hope she can help to get your DD sorted and back on track soon! Good luck! xx

Hi Lancashire Lass! Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time with DD's feeding at the moment. Have you considered having a consultation with someone like Cecile De Scally? Not sure if you've heard of her before but she's a midwife based in Healthcare city and is fantastic. Various friends have used her for feeding and sleeping assistance when their LO's have been driving them nuts, and they swear by her. I've been seeing her for my antenatal classes and so far really rate her and plan to see her for our postnatal support too. Let me know if you're interested and I can post her contact details. Hope things start to get better for you soon! xx

Hi SanRan My hair is quite thick, blonde, kinda straight but with a bit of a random annoying wave. Sometimes when i've had layers in the back before and they've been done badly, it just makes my hair look really big and bushy, but so far im really happy with how the layers look. I guess the real proof will be when i wash it myself and dont spend ages blow-drying it like they did....but so far, so good! :)

Massive congrats LJB! Glad all went well and that little LJB is healthy and heading home! Congrats also to Pancake! :) Plumie - Hope all went well today and you're now enjoying having snuggles with your new precious bundle! Amy - Wow, that is a change! Really happy for you tho that you're getting chance to have another normal delivery! And I'm sure you will be absolutely fine! You seem like a very strong willed lady, and hey, its your 3rd time - you're a pro at this by now! ;) Good luck all the same! Will be keeping everything crossed for you over the coming weeks. We had our final appointment yesterday. Everything is fine but baby is still in exactly the same position so we're definitely going to be having a c-section on the 2nd. One week today!!! Think I've got my head round it all now and am generally feeling much better about everything, altho still cant quite imagine holding a tiny little baby this time next week! Getting very excited now tho, finally! :) Hope everyone else is doing well! Keep the updates coming! Its really exciting to see how everyone is getting on! :) xx Edited to add - plumie, looks like we posted at the same time! Congrats! Glad you are both doing well and being well looked after! And what a beautiful name! xx edited by LMAO-DXB on 25/06/2012

Thanks for sharing a good experience! Do u have a contact number and a few landmarks - dont really know my way around Tecom. Yeah, sure! Their number is 04 457 2911. They're in the same building as Park n Shop, next door to Byblos hotel. They're located on the 8th floor. Parking is a bit of a pain but thats the only down-side. I think they do EPC discount if you're with Emirates, and im sure there was a sign up today saying they have special offers on a tuesday - something like 30% off (but please check that, i wasnt paying that much attention) I think the lady that did my hair was called Reena. Good luck if you decide to try them out. Hope you have as good an experience as I did, and please feedback too so i know I didnt just happen to catch them on a good day!! From today tho, I definitely plan to go back! :)

Hey ladies! I've had so many hair disasters in my nearly 3 years here that its left me terrified to let anyone near me with a pair of scissors! I normally only get my hair cut now when i go home, but as I've not been home since last Oct and have a baby due next week thought id better just bite the bullet and hope for the best. Altho being hormonal and a little on the emotionally fragile side at the moment, was absolutely dreading it! Went to a salon called Fabiana in Tecom and was really nicely surprised! Have been there before for waxing and a pedi, and they've always done a great job but was still fearing for my hair! I was really impressed tho. The girls there are lovely! They listened to what i wanted to have done, and kept checking with me all the way through that i was happy, had they taken enough off, what kind of layers did i want and where, etc. And it only cost me AED140 which was great as i have quite long hair so was expecting it to be much more. The cut and blow dry were at least on a par with what i get from my regular hairdresser back home, if not even a little better. Ok, so they do try and up-sell you other treatments while you're there which can be a little annoying, but they're not pushy and if you just say no thanks, they leave it at that. Anyway, as I know there are quite a few people over here that have the same hairdresser phobias as I do, thought I'd just share my experience. And no, I dont work there!! (I know that seems to be a running theme this week, so just wanted to clear that one up!! ;) )

Hi ladies good to hear how everyone's getting on. Amy, sorry to hear you've been having such a tough time with things recently. I have a lot of respect for the way you have been coping with everything! Well, for my update. Im doing fine. seem to have acquired the legs of an elephant over the last week! Cankles doesn't even come close - my thighs just seem to stretch all the way from my bum to my toes! ;) I now refer to them as my Thankles! Baby is still breech with her bum down and feet and hands up by her face, so looks like we're heading for a c-section. would have preferred a normal delivery but my priority is to get baby out safely, however that may be. Feeling a bit low and bummed about the whole thing at the mo but not really sure why. Im fine about having a c-section, but maybe its more the fact that i thought we still had 6 weeks to go and now its suddenly been cut down to 3. We've got all the stuff ready for whenever she gets here but i think my heads just not quite ready just yet. Am scheduled in for the c-section on the 2nd, so long as she doesn't turn, but Dr Elsa reckons that's highly unlikely, even if i were to have an ECV. Anyone else planning on being in city around that time?

Day 2 I was still not able to stand up straight, so was basically standing hunched over in the shower! It's a massive bandage which they strap on, and mine got wet but not fully soaked. Just ring the nurses when you are done, and they can put a new clean dry bandage on for you. Cool. thanks for the info. any idea which route you're gona be going down this time? edited by LMAO-DXB on 14/06/2012

And just a really stupid question, how long do you have to wait after a c-section before you can have a shower? (I know its a really minor detail but just something thats playing on my mind!!) Thanks! LMAO - you can shower as soon as you are ready! I showered the very next morning as my section was in the afternoon and i was still "high" on drugs for the remainder of the day! It's really a mind over matter experience - you can either succumb to the fact that you had surgery and lay in bed the whole 4 days or you can just "get on with it" ;) Thanks Plumie, thats good to know. Was wondering more because of the wound & dressing - if you needed to wait to keep it dry for a few days.

As you can see from the responses below there are HUGE variations in experiences for both c-sections and vaginal birth. The worst c-section stories I have heard seem to be from emergency c-section (with a labour first). Certainly with my scheduled c-section I could easily hold my baby straight away and all my friends who have had scheduled sections have had similar experiences to mine. He was given to me to hold for the rest of my surgery and I held him the whole time in recovery and all the way back to the room. He slept on me all night and barely touched his bassinet for 48 hours (the OBGYN in fact brought her team of juniors in to see the mother who wold not put her baby down as she thought it was so lovely). Once the IV pain relief was gone I did have some pain but after the first 24 hours I only had panadol 6 hourly as pain relief, and I would forget to take it, so it really wasn't bad pain at all and I was going for long walks around the hospital wards just to get out of my room for a bit. My SIL in contrast was on much heavier painkillers for weeks and found it hard to walk after her vaginal birth resulted in internal tears. You honestly never know what will happen and how your body will respond, in many ways you are better to not even think about that part at all. All pain is scarier in advance though, the anticipation is worse than the actual pain and you forget it quickly afterwards, especially when you have a lovely healthy baby to hold! Hugsy, agree with your sentiments, once I had made the decision the c-section was safer I was at peace with it, but complete strangers were emailing me trying to talk/scare me out of it. I found that terribly rude. edited by kiwispiers on 14/06/2012 Hi Kiwi, Sorry if you've mentioned this already and i've missed it, but where did you have your c-section? was it here in Dubai or elsewhere? And just a really stupid question, how long do you have to wait after a c-section before you can have a shower? (I know its a really minor detail but just something thats playing on my mind!!) Hi Masafi mama. Congrats on your pregnancy! :) I havent met Dr Britt myself, but there was a recent thread on here about her - check it out on the link..... http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=179297 Im under Dr Elsa and pretty certain she is still taking new patients but has a long waiting list. You probably wont be able to get in to see her til about september time, i reckon. You can ask to be put on her waiting list and they will call you closer to the time to offer you an appointment. Dr Britt is standing in for Dr Elsa while she is off on leave, and Dr Elsa seems to really rate her, as do the people in the previous thread, so I reckon you'll be fine. HTH. xx

Hi LJB. Sorry to hear your baby is still breech. Went to see Dr Elsa today and mine is still being a little monkey too! Grrr!! Going to try the whole being on all fours thing, and plan to try the acupuncture and moxibustion too. Got to go back and see her again on the 12th and if she's still breech, will be booked in for ECV at week 37. Totally trust Dr Elsa, but not sure what I think about the procedure. Part of me thinks its worth a try, but the other part thinks maybe its not worth the risk of needing an emergency c-section and would be better off just booking one instead. How do you feel about it all? Hope all goes well with your acupuncture today! Fingers crossed it does the trick. If you find you're not happy with the Dr you're seeing, I've been recommended a different one in Healthcare City called Dr Sharong. Would happily pass on the contact details if you want them! Keep us posted on how you get on! :) xx

Hi Simples Im not fantastic with directions so please bear with me! but do you know the road with Westin, Le Meridien, Barasti etc (think its maybe Al Sufouh road?) Keep these hotels on your right and just keep going straight. You'll get the JBR buildings on your right. Keep going straight. Go straight over a couple of sets of traffic lights (not sure exactly how many) but then you'll see Gulnaz Restaurant and the Golden Fork restaurants on your left. When you see these, do a U-turn at the traffic lights and then turn right to go down a hill between these two restaurants towards the water. The Marina Prominade is actually a building which will now be on your left and there is free parking in their underground car park. if you park and then go into the lobby, they can give you further directions from there. Its prob just about a 5 min walk from there. There might be parking closer by, but this is what we did at the weekend and it worked ok for us. Id never been to Baker & Spice before but to be honest was a bit disappointed and felt it didnt really live up to all the hype i'd heard. Its in a lovely setting tho - nice to sit and look out over the water to the yacht club. Hope this helps you to find it a bit better! Good luck! :)

Thanks lmao-Dxb that info is great. Have been looking at MOH nursing registration details and it does state that certain countries are exempt from taking the exam ( knew I wasnt imagining it lol). The obvious ones are UAE nationals and Grads from university here but also says those who hold a license in " certain countries" but I have searched website and looked everywhere but cannot find out which countries those are. If I don't have to sit an exam that's great but if I do I need to start getting prepared!! Out of interest are you not working anymore?. By the wording of your message it seems you aren't, Is it that bad lol!! Tia Hey Zara, No, Im not working any more. And for me, yes, it was that bad! I stuck it out for just over a year but unfortunately, the hospital I was working for had (and still has) horrendous management - if you were of a specific nationality you were treated quite differently to everyone else (I am not of this preferred nationality!!), we had no support from our manager, I was frequently "Ordered" to treat patients in ways that had i have done so in the UK I would probably have been taken to the HPC for disciplinary hearings..... I had some pretty big ethical issues with this! My contract was 48 hrs/week but due to poor organisation and management within my department would frequently be working 60+ hours per week with Time in Lieu "given" for the extra time worked, however staffing was rarely at a level which enabled you to actually take the time back.... I actually met with a few of my old colleagues tonight and from the stories they were telling me, sadly things there have not changed. As flomacdo mentioned, you do not have the autonomy here that you would have at home. Some can live with that....it drove me absolutely mad! Especially as when you try and have a professional discussion with a Dr as to why you are being ordered to do things in such a way (especially when its wrong!!) and try to clinically reason things through and suggest alternatives, as you would back in UK, it is very normal for that Dr to then shout and yell at you in the middle of a ward, belittle you infront of colleagues, patients and relatives, and then have formal complaints sent to your boss about you, who then provides you with no support at all and tells you to apologise to the Dr as, after all, they are the Dr and they are the ones who bring in the money. Im sure that not everyone working in healthcare will have been as unlucky and im sure that some will probably have very positive experiences to share with you. Dont get me wrong, I love living here, and for our quality of life in general, moving here was the best decision we ever made, but unfortunately, for my career it has been the opposite. Edited for spelling. edited by LMAO-DXB on 14/05/2012

Hi Zara Im not a nurse, but a UK trained physio and worked in a hospital here for just over a year when we first relocated. Altho things might be slightly different given our different professions, I would imagine there's not too much difference. For me, I worked in Dubai Health Care City (DHCC) which has its own licencing board, so to speak where by I didnt have to sit any licencing exams - I just had to submit all of my official paperwork - CSP, HPC, Degree, transcripts from my uni degree course etc and that was pretty much it, but I was then only licensed to work within DHCC - no where else. To work in any hospitals/clinics/practices/special schools etc, outside of DHCC, we have to have a DOHMS licence (Department of Health and Medical Services) / DHA (Dubai Health Authority) which we have to sit an exam for. I know Dietitians, and I think speech and language therapists have to do the same so I would imagine it would be the same for nurses too. As far as I'm aware, DOHMS and DHA are one and the same thing. With my licence, as I didnt have to sit an exam, I just had to submit all my paperwork to HR and then they sorted it out from there. I think it just took a few weeks. Not sure how long it takes going down the DOHMS route. Be aware that health care here is VERY different to what you will be used to in the UK. From my experience (and that of many of my previous colleagues) as Healthcare professionals, we do not receive the same level of respect here in terms of our professional skills or opinion and in many cases we are merely expected to do as we are told - regardless as to what our own clinical reasoning is telling us. I guess it probably depends to an extent on the hospital / environment you work in, but it can be quite a culture shock which can be hard to adapt to especially if you're not expecting it. Not trying to put you off, just wish someone had given me some prior warning! Hope this clears a few things up for you with regards to the licencing process. I believe that normally, if you are offered a job by a hospital / clinic, they will assist you in organising everything for you to get your license. If there's anything else I can help with, please feel free to ask. I might not know the answers but might be able to point you in the right direction. HTH. :)

We have the gusto and we think it's fab. I ve had alot of machines and we think this one is the best, as it has more power than the ones we've had before, it makes the milk nice and foamy for my lattes and cuppuccino. Also it does cold drinks like Ice Tea. The gusto also makes bigger coffee just by adjusting it yourself and not doing what the box says. Are the capsules expensive for the Gusto? And can you buy the milk caps separately or do they only come with the ones that require a milk capsule? Im on Decaf at the mo and would like to make defaf lattes / cappuccinos etc. Do you know if this is possible? Going to go and have a look in the malls in a bit but thought it would be better to go with info from the people who actually know rather than trying to get it out of the sales people!! How much did you pay for your Nespresso / Gusto? Is there a massive price difference?

Hi Smarti. Sorry to hear your friend is having problems. Kate Mills at City Hospital is a Paediatric specialist physiotherapist and is fantastic. Not so sure she (or any other physio to be honest) could help with the feeding issues, but perhaps someone like Cecile De Scally would be more qualified for something like that - i know she's worked wonders for friends whose babies have had feeding problems; but Kate would certainly be able to address the low tonicity issues. Cecile's email address is: [email protected]. She's really helpful. Maybe your friend could email her and see if she thinks she could help. HTH

Im starting to be of the opinion that if people want to see us and spend time with us....they know where we are!! Waits for the next thread "Am Sick of all these visitors who treat my home like a hotel" Hahaha! I never have to worry about that, we never have anybody come visit us! But get constant begs when you coming home to visit requests! Like LMAO said - you know where I am - at least coming to Dubai feels like a holiday, pool/beach sun action! My thoughts exactly!! Plus its cheaper for people to get here for a proper holiday than it is for us to get home, to just then "enjoy" the stress and amazing weather that UK has to offer, the trips to Asda.... (yeah, why is it that as AB said, we go home, its business as usual. People come here and we're expected to drop everything and be on hand to be on holiday with them?!!) And like you, we rarely get visitors too - maybe id change my mind if they all took us up on the offer! ;) Apologies for the rant.....am grumpy with a capital GRUMP today!

I know exactly what you mean! Last year we went home for my BIL's wedding. I went ahead of DH and went an extra week or so early so I could spend some time with my sister, as on my previous visit she was upset that i hadnt spent enough time with her. so then she just ended up throwing a tantrum doing the whole "oh poor me, my life is awful, you dont understand, aren't you lucky to have such a perfect life, you wipe your a$$ with gold leaf....." kinda cr@p (trust me, our life is FAR from perfect over here!!) so we had a massive argument and didnt speak for the majority of my stay. Then my dad threw a massive wobbley and we had a huge argument - after i came back to DXB found out that it was because he was upset that i didnt get to spend much time with him.....then i stayed with my in-laws which came with another bucket load of stress!!! DH asked me a few weeks ago if i wanted to go back to UK for a week for our babymoon - I laughed and said there's nothing I would like LESS than to go back there right now!! Im starting to be of the opinion that if people want to see us and spend time with us....they know where we are!! edited by LMAO-DXB on 18/04/2012

Thanks for the feedback ladies! Good to know that you are all happy with the curtains you've got from DM. Was kind of wondering if the price was too good to be true, but glad to see this doesnt seem to be the case! Will look up Jim will fix it, but has anyone got any more suggestions on alternative Handymen to install them for me? Thanks!

DH put ours up, didn't take long. I know Jim Will Fix it do it, won't be the cheapest. Where are you located someone may know someone in your area. thanks cymraes, we're in Tecom. For pretty much all the places in D'Mart we got quotes from, I think they were all quoting about AED50 (ish) for instillation (for 2 windows) and AED150 for the guy's return taxi ride. Was wondering if we'd be better off using that money to get someone reliable / recommended to do the instillation for us.

by the way, how much will it cost if i will deliver my baby in City Hospital? When I inquired about it in Feb of last year, the info I was sent said that if I use a City Hospital OB/GYN, a normal delivery was AED11,025 or a C-section was AED22,800. These prices did not include an epidural, this was an additional AED2250. As I said tho, this was a quotation given over a year ago so their prices may have changes since. If you email them on: [email protected] they should be able to provide you with an up-to-date quote. What about your health insurance tho? Are you covered for maternity and is City included in you insurance providers network? if so, the costs you would have to pay would be significantly reduced, however I'm guessing maybe City's not covered in your ins, hence you deciding on Iranian? HTH

As long as you were married befor being 5 months and 29 days pregnant it doesn't matter even with a government hospital. All the hospital needs is the paperwork to show you are married dates don't matter. How come 5 months and 29 days? Haven't heard that before. Angel raiver, wouldn't you be better getting in touch with your Embassy and getting some concrete information from them? Or is your OB/GYN at Iranian aware of your situation? Could you ask her / him for advice?? A friend of mine was here with her partner and found out she was pregnant. She went to her Embassy and they were extremely helpful with advising her what her options were and potential consequences. She and her partner went home, got married, came back and then delivered at City and all was fine. City is private tho so whether or not it would be different to Iranian / other government hospitals, I have no idea! You will probably get lots of different opinions on here based on other's experiences and hear-say, but its unlikely that anyone else will have been in exactly the same circumstances as you. I think your safest bet is to try and get reliable information from an official source to make sure you dont accidentally find yourself in any trouble.
