You should also be aware that discussing your thoughts about British Protocol and our Queen when not a British national is really not on and most Brits will take great umbrage. Of all the most ridiculous comments ever. I'll discuss your queen and their queen and any other person if I so choose. Just as it's perfectly acceptable to discuss our presidents and first ladies. Take great umbrage if you want to but I don't really care one iota. Really? Again it comes down to respect, and as such i will hold my tongue in response. If discussing protocols and/or Royals is disrespectful, we would all still be living in the Middle Ages. And why on earth would a non- British national not be allowed to discuss your queen. Your Royals are constantly plastered on the front pages of papers and tabloids all over the world. And we should all refrain from having an opinion? One can have an opinion but expect a retort was the point being made when discussions about the British Monarchy are made that are irrelevant to the topic in hand and mostly complete and utter tosh.

And if you ask me, what Brits are best renowned for it is being self-deprecating a not taking themselves too seriously. That's what I love about the UK. The only ones likely to take offence at anyone criticising the monarchy are 70-year-old Daily Mail readers. Maybe I socialise with too many Guardian readers (lol) but to my friends it would be water off a duck's back! The Brits are known for being self depreciating? Where on earth do you get that idea? Perhaps changing one's social circles may be in order.

Genie if you understood British etiquette when meeting a royal you would be aware that you do not have to curtsey especially as a non Brit. You do not have to curtsey as a Brit either. That is the point I was making, as the UK is far more egalitarian than it used to be. And yes, protocol in many other countries (e.g. middle east) should be respected. I very much doubt that, based on her response, Genie would ignore this. The point we were both making is that in the UK we are thankfully no longer expected to grovel in front of the monarchy - nor would they want us to - in this modern, democratic age. So sweeping comments about the class system being extremely hierarchical are, at best, misguided. As mentioned in my earlier post, personally I find Britain to be far less elitist than other countries e.g. France. I stated that you do not have to curtsey "especially as a non national", making it clear that even as a national you do not. (just for clarification). I don't think Brits have had to grovel to the monarchy for certainly an awful long time. Respect for protocol yes. I simply can not see the relevance of class systems in the western world, the Queen and curtsying and the thread.

Thank you ladies. Lolacat, please don't judge, you have no idea what we were shown/promised nor where we live. Believe me, I am under no illusions and am not ungrateful. I was merely asking a question for some helpful advice. I am not going to explain what we have been through since moving in here as I do not have to justify myself to you Having lived in plenty of developing countries, I have lived in a lot worse and a lot better. Thank you for your comment though. edited by Bongo74 on 15/08/2014 When you use the words "like many others, with sub standard accommodation" you are not merely asking a question. A question would have just been regarding the pro's and con's of moving from EK accom allowance. Such statements are not wise to place on a public forum.

90 kg is huge and going to be very expensive. Look at Empost the postal service here, they have a range of services and i have always found them excellent. Also look at DHL, Aramex and maybe some of the airline freight services such as Emirates cargo for that sort of weight.

[i'>LOL DT! Profuse apologies... I do realise they have a constitutional role, but many foreigners seem to assume that we live in total adulation of them. This is far from the truth in a modern, democratic society. For instance, many of my friends would not bow or courtesy for the queen given that she is there due to an accident of birth. Having said that. she does do an excellent job at fulfilling her role and representing the UK overseas. And let's not forget how much income the royals generate in terms of tourism. Lol.[/i'> Luckily I don't know anyone who wouldn't be proud to curtsey to the Queen should they ever be fortunate enough to meet her....Maybe foreigners have this impression because they see pictures of the crowds a Royal Visit attracts and the countrywide excitement generated by royal occasions such as a wedding or birth... I would not curtsey. I met Princess Diana on three occasions - was I respectful and thrilled to meet her - yes - did I curtsey - no. Nothing to do with lack of respect just I feel that this is something should have died out hundreds of years ago ( apart from pomp & ceremony historical type occasions maybe). It would be the same if I met the Queen, respectful demeanor - yes - bowing and scraping -no. This is 2014 not 1614. Genie if you understood British etiquette when meeting a royal you would be aware that you do not have to curtsey especially as a non Brit. I hope you don't show the same attitude in this region of the world when it comes to protocols with your opinion as to whether it is acceptable.

I have not watched a single episode of Downton Abbey, to be honest. I mentioned earlier that the UK still has a class system, not as rigid as in the past, and here we are still debating whether or not one should curtsey to members of the royal family. Why, if there is no class based society where some are accorded greater respect than others simply by accident of birth and no other merit, is this still going on? I understand she represents Great Britain, but the President/Prime Minister of a country does the same and no one curtsies to them - and that is what being modern and democratic means. The principles of etiquette matter in any society and if you wish to take them to a basic comprehensible level they start in the home. Children being respectful of parents, etc. In many societies etiquette matters greatly, protocols not followed will get you nowhere in business in certain countries (Japan, China, ME). It is all about respect, one does not have to curtsey to the Queen but there are protocols regarding behaviour that should be followed mainly to prevent others embarrassment, not hers. You should also be aware that discussing your thoughts about British Protocol and our Queen when not a British national is really not on and most Brits will take great umbrage. Discussing the British Royal family and it's protocols is irrelevant to the topic. The topic is so blindingly obvious it hardly needs discussion. edited by Lolacat on 17/08/2014

Hi BB, Very sorry to hear about your son and his accident. Although I'm a (non-practising) nurse-practioner, I don't think that anyone in the medical profession should be providing you with specific advice - on a forum - without first examining your son, and reviewing his medical history. If you are concerned with receiving conflicting recommendations, then I suggest you quickly seek a second opinion from a qualified and recommended orthopaedic surgeon and/or sports medicine orthopaedic specialist. I wouldn't completely rule out a paediatric orthopod, as your son is still growing at age 16, including his legs ;) Just find someone you feel comfortable with. All of the above being said, I have had a similar injury with a fibula/tibula fracture & ankle dislocation that also needed open reduction and internal fixation (plates, pins, screws). In general, the approach is to remain non-weight bearing for at least six weeks but to remove the cast as soon as possible, and use an air cast or splint (preferable) in order to maintain and promote muscle and ligament movement & strengthening. It can be a long recovery so be prepared for that. Your son should be back to water sports soon enough but running and impact sports will take longer. A good (sports medicine) physiotherapist will be invaluable, and speaking from my own experience, finding one that your son will trust, and will work well with, is key to a speedier healing. Hope he's feeling better soon, and that your concerns are also alleviated soon. Let us know how you get along! Sending lots of positive thoughts . . . Cheers, NL (apologies - I'm too new to Dubai to recommend anyone) edited by NorthernLights on 15/08/2014 edited by NorthernLights on 15/08/2014 edited by NorthernLights on 15/08/2014 In the UK 16 is the age where they move from pead to adults OS. They will be better to see a good ortho here, there are more of them. edited by Lolacat on 15/08/2014

This has gone a long way from the original topic (which essentially was about self absorbed Mummies and their unacceptable delusion that their babies are the centres of the whole world) but whilst we are on the subject of unsanitary trolleys (or the toddlers in them) .have you ladies considered the bacteria on the bottom of our handbags? Which most of we childfree shoppers perch in the trolley seat........... or park on restaurant tables? In bacteriological terms I think I'd prefer an incontinent baby on either. . Dubai mums have dirty handbags? Noooooooo it can't be true; they have designer ones!! I can see maids duty lists all over the country being changed to add *clean modoms baggy bottom daily".

BB, sounds like a bit of a nightmare! Bones are talked about in terms of healing in 6 week blocks, hence why everything is 6 weeks. It sounds like a pretty bad break and i would suggest that you do need to have a team here you can trust. Infection is something you really need to be aware of and the right physio and Orthopod will be essential to monitor healing and recovery. You are correct, you do not need a pediatric Orthopod at 16. I suggest you contact and book an appointment with one of the OS at City Hospital, i have used a few there and been satisfied. Personally i look to see they have worked and trained at a good hospital in the UK and gained a qualification form there. Certainly at City they have . Also remember that you can contact the surgeon in the UK or his SHO and ask advice, i have done this a few times and it is very reassuring, so call the hospital and see if you can get an email contact for him. You could also fly back in a few weeks and see him/her. If your UK surgeon told you A then that is what you do, however it will not hurt to refer the case here because your son will require physio and OT to learn how to touch walk and re build muscle etc. So start with City and go from there. These things take time and getting it right is really important.

If you can give way on the "native English speaking" then (as I've already posted on another thread) the Malaak nurses are a lovely option. http://malaak.me They are qualified maternity nurses and you can hire them by the hour for hours like yours. They are all Filipina but all speak very good English. We've used them and they are really excellent. As I said on the other thread, it's pricey, so for most people would only be a short term option, but see how your budget goes. Another option is Healthbay Polyclinic- they supply maternity nurses in the same way. (Though we did find Malaak as a company to be much more friendly and helpful than Healthbay.) As for wanting a nanny specifically from a "Western" country: you might be pleasantly surprised if you widen those criteria! Great advice and a good link.

Go to a good GP and they can do a blood test that investigates first and you can get this covered on insurance, if something comes up on that blood they can then do more on insurance. You have to start at the beginning not juts what you think it may be, there can be many many reasons for all sorts of things. Go see Dr Carol Smiley at Healthbay polyclinic or another good GP before you invest in tests that may be irrelevant.

It would be very unwise to travel a sick child, not inly for the welfare of others but also your own child's welfare. If she is sick she is at risk of picking up other illness as her immune system will be stressed. It is a complete nightmare i know but you really need to see a Doctor and see if you can change the airline booking and hold up for a few days until she is fit to fly. Also bear in mind that should she spike any form of fever you could be in for a real nightmare with Ebola being watched for by all the airlines and immigrations across the globe.

BRING the dryer! DSO is quite exposed when the winds blow and carry sand everywhere. If you put your towels outside they end up like cardboard within 5 mins, so either dry on a rack inside or use a dryer. A condenser dryer will be far better but i would bring what you have as you can always sell it or place it somewhere with good ventilation. Curtains, i suggest you look at the Dubai Silicon Oasis forum and see if you can register and ask those who live in Semmer sizes of the windows, or set up a thread on here. I would probably throw what you have in anyway. Just be warned that some curtain materials can bleach in the heat of the containers. Thank you all, ladies, I will Be straightforward, the proposal is for about 70k so, correct me if I am wrong, you all agree that this amount is quite good, not to live as rich but enough to cover the monthly expenses. Not a luxury life but a fair, adequate life. A second job would certainly improve things. Is this the correct perspective I got from your replies? That is an excellent offer, if you have kids then find a nice catchment area for local schools and a good commute for your DH and you are away! I recently tried to do some sums for monthly cost of living in the South East... Supermarket £600 (including wine & beer because that's important....plus cleaning products and basic toiletries) Petrol £350 (2 cars, 17 miles return daily commute) Council tax £250 TV/broadband/landline £50 2 x car insurances £80 (reasonable?) 3 x mobiles £60 House insurance £50 Gas/electric/water £240 After school £120 Clothes, shoes, music lessons, cinema, books, coffees, toys, make up and other stuff allowance £1000 So that's about £2800 a month without factoring in holidays, savings, pensions and the boiler unexpectedly dies on you fund....plus rent on top which could be £1000 for a small family house in Hampshire. So that's £4000 monthly take home after tax, household income of apprx £70k a year. This is a generous estimate though, there is room to cut back and lots of people live on a lot less. I wouldn't say it is easy living on £40k in the South East though. edited by Sugarbeach on 06/08/2014 How on earth did you come to those figures? They are way too high for the average family.

Veela the jails are FULL of people who thought they had no choice! There is always a choice. For free i and everyone on here is going to tell you don't sublet from a stranger because it looks like a good financial option at the time. There are so many scams and you will have no rights what so ever if it goes wrong and could well end up the wrong side of the law. This is not Europe and the rental system here has rules and regulations to protect both renters and landlords. If you have a job then they should be helping with your accommodation situation and putting you up somewhere until you find your own accommodation. If your job has no accommodation then they should be sorting out an allowance and accommodating you until your visa comes through. If you have no job then you should be thinking very hard about the whole thing. You need to go back to the drawing board and re assess your whole situation and I'm afraid search harder further out for accommodation. Sorry to be hard.

Well i would certainly tell him the situation and see what can be negotiated. Work out what a move will cost and when he comes to raise the rent for the second year play around with that figure and see whether you can come to an agreement.

Ladies im really sorry for jumping on this post when i dont have any advice for OP but i am just looking at some of the comments re work per month between me and my DH we will be earning approx 45,000 AED a month and reading this now im not sure its enough :( we have one little girl who will be going to year 1 and looking to get a 2 bed flat in dubai land for the first year. we arrive out in 2 weeks and can you all shed some light if we are punching way above out weight with this wage for 3 of us? You should be absolutely fine with this salary, it's good, assume up to 5k a month school fees, up to 15k a month for rent and perhaps another 2k for bills, so quite a good ammount left to pay for everything else. 2K for bills? What are they to eat, sand? 2 K is minimum........you have housing tax equiv to add on top of your rent, DEWA bills........some places have cooling fees, some have other fees. You then have deposits galore, phone, TV, Gas, Water. Then you have weekly food bills say 1K inclusive of non food items like washing powder etc. Then you have car rental, insurance (s). You need full medical for all of you as a basic and that is not cheap. Then you have all your family Visa fees to add in. Also attestation fees for all your documents if not done so yet, remember birth cert for your DD, Marriage and educational certificates. So add another 10 K minimum for cost of living onto your 5K school fees and 15K rent. Remembering that all the major financial outlays are normal paid yearly in advance and most are non refundable! I would suggest you look at a serviced apartment for a while until you get your lives in order and see how expensive life can be. You must be very careful about finding a job once you are here and the contract as you could easily be given a local hire contract. You say 45 between you, but you both have yet to have that in writing and actually be paid. Please take heed and be very very careful, converting AED into Sterling can be deceptive.
