Interesting Q. Although the temp on the sports field unshaded will be very different from the official temperature which is taken at the weather station in the shade near the airport. I am waiting for the day when it's too hot to go to school OR work and we must all stay at home under the duvet and watch movies. :) It will never happen!

Hi DizzyDuck - can I ask where your son goes now? I am a newbie coming from British System and have 2 bright athletic kids Yrs 3 and 7 and am trying to get together a shortlist of schools for a September start. Was thinking of GWSO but your comments have made me think twice. Any advice gratefully received! I would still give GSO a go, my daughter just did the entrance exam today and will get the results next week the school is amazing. My daughter is now at JBS and GSO is three times the size and they seem much more organised already. Loads of extra school activities, all European teachers. But, lets see if she passed but for me its seems better than where we are now With respect how can you advise someone else to give it a go when you are not even in the school? Have you visited all the other schools in Dubai and looked at their proven results and gained feedback from their parent bodies? Being three times the size is not always a benefit! How many playgrounds and sports fields did you see and what is the school pupil size for example? Lol!! Lolacat, I never said they were the best school and I can express my opinion that's what this forum is for right?! If you read what I put I said for us it seem better an where we are....everyone is different and can make there own judgement.... Yes i read what you said.

Hi all. What do you do with your naughty toddler? Now, I dont mean discipline wise but more generally. DD is almost 2.5yo and say for example if we're out by the pool it's a constant battle with her to play nicely and not splash the other kids or she'll scream at me pretty much every time I touch her to bring her back to the shallow end (while she's wearing armbands) or she'll try and grab other kids' toys etc. If we're at home, she'll scream/tell me to shush/shout at me no if I ask her something. Now I have from the beginning followed the routines of getting down to her level and speaking to her calmly, informing her before we do something so she has time to process, saying 'when you' instead of 'if you', naughty chair/corner, etc etc etc. Basically I have followed everything that I know and have read and been advised and there is almost no progress with her ways. So im just confused now, is she being naughty and I need to come down harder? Do I just calm down and leave it a little as this is just her personality (ie naturally boisterous and active and bossy etc)? Am I expecting too much from her in terms of her listening to me all the time? So to mothers out there with children who are similar or were, what did/do you do? And pls understand this isnt just a phase or hyperness due to food or tv etc (I limit all these kinds of things without extremes) this is personality as this bossy behaviour was apparent from quite young already. Anyways thanks for any help :) You need to use far more distraction techniques and stop thinking of this as naughty behaviour, your Dd is expressing herself through replication. If she says shush and No she has learnt that response from an adult around her. The behavior she displays is learnt behaviour. SO you need to use distraction and positive reinforcement rather than battle mode and argumentative tactics. I would also not say she is bossy, more independent and as a first born no doubt she has been the center of attention and therefore she has taken the lead and been rewarded by attention for any of her actions. She is not a baby anymore, she is a little person who is investigating the world and expressing what pleases her, the fact you don't get it is not her issue lol Remember that attention for a child can come as negative or positive, it is a response they are wanting, so becareful with that. So lots of distraction techniques, lots of just doing rather than negotiating and lots of positive praise and far less of the negative connotations. Your DD is a perfectly bright normal young toddler who is doing what every toddler does, enjoy it and embrace it rather than fighting it!

And on top of all this I actually saw someone post a photo of their female dog on a facebook group asking for a male dog to mate with her because she wants to make "cute" puppies ... I now DT, it's never ending! It seems to be worse than ever, streams of puppies in pet shops, puppies every where! Responsible pet ownership seems to be very rare these days. I want, in the near future, to get a dog but i want a specefic breed and from a puppy - i will buy from Europe and ship here - just because i dont want a rescue dog, doesn't make me a an irresponsible person... No that doesn't make you irresponsible, actually shows great responsibility in planning, why would you think otherwise? I have no issues with people purchasing puppies from respectable breeders having investigated thoroughly first. Frankly, I reckon people who pay for their dogs are more likely to be dedicated to them and not abandon them when they become less cute (say, after about 2 years!) No i would say people who investigate the reality of pet ownership and go into it with their eyes open. Loads of pets are bought and end up being rehomed, so paying per say does not always equate to responsible ownership. Paying to support puppy mills certainly is as far from responsible as one can get.

We rescued a dog who prior to this new life had bitten adults, children, dogs and cats. She was not even near vicious but instead ill treated, beaten with sticks and iron rods, burnt with matches and cigarette butts, kicked, starved, the list goes on and on. She only did bite people because she was scared, traumatized and defenseless. Today, she is a completely changed girl who has never bitten us or any one else (including other animals) as she has gotten love and correction without any harsh means. I am a firm believer in giving such dogs a chance unless there is a neurological condition then yes the dog needs to be put to sleep. I know a dozen other people who have rescued dogs that have bitten in the past and have invested their time in behavioral modification. So it can be done and as Batsgirl said, you owe it to the animal. And i am aware of dogs who have been adopted from several organizations here who have either bitten previously and the new adopter not informed or have been re homed with blatant issues that were also not informed. Dogs who have been through numerous homes due to issues. Exactly who benefits from such policies? The dogs? I think not. As for you owe it to the dog, if you re read BG's posts you will see she already has a dog trainer and consulted the rescue organistation. Exactly what does she owe? edited by Lolacat on 27/05/2014

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats on top of that 3 foster dogs which we are working on behavioral modification so they can find forever homes in the future. Out of these 3 fosters one has bitten in the past and it's been 3 months he's with us and not bitten us or any visitors. edited by ecochic on 27/05/2014 But you are not a millionaire and can not go and take on all the dogs in Dubai who have issues therefore at some point someone needs to make some sensible and responsible decisions.

Are you seriously suggesting I put down a healthy dog against the advice of professionals? A dog you have never seen but dog trainers have? Trainers who fully understand the situation and do not feel she is a risk, in the right home. The 'bite' was not serious, did not break the skin and was from a scared animal who felt threatened. I won't be posting on this subject again, things are not always black and white. Trainers you no doubt pay for their time? Why did the animal feel threatened? The bottom line is you have an animal in your home you can not trust around children and have made a decision to rehome that animal. My suggestion to you is that such a home is gong to be incredibly hard to find and putting a dog who already has *issues* back into a kennel environment where she could sit for years on end is IMHO pretty cruel. I would also seriously question ANY rescue organization that re homes dogs that have a history of biting regardless of the circumstances. As for the bite was not serious, well I'm glad for you and the poor child involved it wasn't.

I rarely comment on these sorts of threads because i just despair with some involved in the pet industry (generic) here. The rescue places need to get tough and implement a tough euthanasia policy, that includes dogs that have bitten. Exactly what fantasy land are these people in to believe that a rescue who has bitten can be re-homed when there are hundreds of dogs needing a home who have never bitten? Who takes a dog on with a previous history of biting? The odds of finding a home are negligible. Why won't someone make a responsible decision? The charities are full now and summer has not even started, you only need to look at Dubbizle to see the number of animals needing homes. Meanwhile the pet trade is booming as people go purchase their 10 K cute puppies! At the same time more accommodation facilities are restricting pets! Whilst i know there are some really good people involved with rescue organizations who have their heads screwed on I also have first hand experience of others who should perhaps take up knitting, because they really are not helping the situation. I'm sorry Batsgirl but the comments from the two other posters are very valid. You pay a dog trainer, K9 have no room and you state her behavioral problems are too much and you have had her 18 months. Exactly who is going to want this dog? Realistically who? It's not an easy decision but responsible ones sometimes aren't.

Also there are more GEMS schools opening, one in Motor City is BC. You will find space, don't panic. Also look at Jebil Ali primary, Kings Jumeriah, and DESS. Do be aware there are profit and no profit schools.

DESC and JC have excellent performing arts departments! DESC should still have places for a Year 10/11 for the coming year. I know several people with children there and they love it. It's less than 10 minutes away from Wellington DSO. Definitely a good option for OP. It would certainly be my choice! DESC is becoming a very popular school for good reason.

Far too early to crate train. Your puppy has issues, Gardia is very nasty and you don't have a mild dose of it, it's like being pregnant, you either are or not. Gardia can take a long time to sort out and requires medication over a period of time. The damage Gardia does to the guts and hence control can take quite a while to sort out. You can not expect an animal or human to control their bowels when they have Gardia or even for a while afterwards, it's a time factor. Worming needs to be weekly and again this will also be having an effect on the bowels and faeces being passed. Again it's not a one off *my dog has a small case of worms*, your puppy has worms and needs weekly treatment then a regular program for worming. Everything your dog comes in contact with needs to be kept really clean to prevent reinfection. Toilet training a pup takes far longer than two weeks in a normal young pup, a pup from a pet shop with the few issues you have mentioned could take months. First his body has to be healthy and his immune system built, this will take a months. Second his psychological process regarding bathroom business needs to be completely re wired, this again will take time and dedicated training. My suggestions are 1) contact Nad Al SHeba vets and ask for a consultation with a dog trainer, they can recommend some excellent ones. 2) Buy a gated playpen set up rather than a crate, one with just sides or make something similar. An area you can put water, a bed and newspaper down for pup during the night to try and control the mess. You have to make this a positive area not a negative one as your puppy will have separation anxiety issues already due to the extreme trauma he has endured previously, so this needs to be carefully done. 3) Every hour you take your puppy out and Say *do your business*. Time, patience and understanding are required in huge amounts. There are no quick fixes when it comes to this issue and the other issues you will face from having purchased a puppy who has been born into one of the most ruthless trades. edited by Lolacat on 26/05/2014

A bump for this thread in case anyone is thinking of renewing before their Summer break. I'm at 8-1/2 weeks since I sent my passport for renewal, it still says processing on the website and according to the passport office it's being processed and there are no issues. I travel in July so should be okay but ulp! Oh that is just ridiculous! 9 weeks for a passport? Yes, just got mine back after 9 weeks too. It's simply absurd that expats should not have a fast track system IMHO!

A flyer given to every neighbour and security is well worth doing and ask security if you can put one up on the entrance/ext gate. Look under parked cars as well, especially in garages where the car has been parked for a few days. Good luck.

I think one would be slightly delusional not to realize that any removal from a family unit, be that a parent working away, parents separated or boarding school is not going to have some issue on various family members and children suffer in one way or another. But thousands of families do it and survive, cope, and thousands of kids are fine, ideal no, but life rarely is. edited by Lolacat on 24/05/2014

I will probably be red thumbed to oblivion but here goes... I think if your 5 year old has such exacting criteria about what shows she will watch on TV then I would not try to meet her demands and hope that she gets bored enough to do something else. Eons ago when I was a child the only shows we got to watch were "watch with mother" and if Andy Pandy was not doing it for us then our only choice was to pick up a book or some Lego or crayons etc. I think that if she is bored with the TV shows / DVD's then let her use her imagination / creativity to do something else that interests and stimulates her. I am of the opinion that boredom is actually not a bad thing for children as it forces them to use their resources to come up with something that interests them / holds their attention/ develops skills - even if they are the skills of imagination only. edited by Genie on 22/05/2014 Excellent post Genie! loads of thumbs up!

I'm finding the thumb distribution on this thread a bit of a puzzle... seems to be a lot of people in favour of slapping kids - my anti slapping post actually got 6 thumbs down !! Who are all these people who approve of it ? Very sad ... or maybe just an indication of the changing demographic on EW... Interesting point! Hadn't thought of that. But if as you suggest EW is becoming less 'western' in its target audience then that would explain people favouring more, errrrr..... 'traditional' forms of discipline :-/ I have never encountered so many educated people who would happily admit to slapping their kids on a regular basis; and to slapping another adult...never! Kids get used to whatever form of punishment you use whether it is a slap, withdrawal of attention or a stern talking to. Are the slapped kids all perfectly behaved little angels? Are the rest hellcats? Of course not. It comes down to intelligent parenting. It does worry me though. If you use a slap as a quick and easy punishment, what do you do when it is something really serious? I would never say slapping is an easy punishment.
