Hi, We had a tour of Foremarke along with a few other schools a couple of weeks ago. I liked Foremarke for the small class sizes, and the children were obviously doing really well. The teachers all seemed nice as well. One thing to take into consideration is the fees - not only the annual fee but you also have to stump up a 20,000 AED "facilities" fee.... Foremarke positions itself as an English prep school abroad so if this is the type of education you want, it could be for you. We didn't choose Foremarke in the end, we went with Nord Anglia. But doesn't it follow the British Curriculum not the Independent schools curriculum that prep schools do?

There is little to do with your children TBH, all the times change and there are few places open for food and drink. It is totally ok to let your children at these ages eat and drink in a quite corner of a mall or food court or in the car.

If you look at how the question was worded, a family member was also an option. So what if granny gave little Jonny a tap on the hand? The word slap has so many connotations and the question had so many ways it could go, i wonder if people always think the worst and become over dramatic. I wonder just how there is a whole society/generation out there who are not child abusers or in therapy who all had at some point in their childhoods a wee tap?

To those of you who have travelled with your maid, can you please let me know how much you have to pay by law in the UK / US. I understand that I need to make a contract of employment stating our maid's salary whilst in the US / UK as part of the visa process. And we are prepared to pay more than what we pay her here. I just have no idea how much we are expected to pay. Any advice is greatly appreciated. TIA The UK has a minimum wage and probably taxable as well. You could hire a nanny for less.

I reckon its a sign of education and/or class. The only people I know who still hit their kids ... Always the controversial one! Slightly ironic considering you just posted about resting your head on your boobs, some may interpret such a statement as "toilet humour". Let's not even mention the "its" in the same sentence as education. lol I didn't say which class! Ha Ha, like a bee to a honeypot! I had noted that, but the insinuation was there that the uneducated still swat their little darlings bottys. When the reality is that discipline, however dished out is far more based on cultural upbringing and replication of how one was brought up. Darlings', but I won't go there :D Ha ha, education darling.

It's wrong to hit an adult, so why would you hit a child? If a few more adults had had a wee slapped botty as a child not so many could do with a bog slappy round the chops for irresponsible behavior!

I am almost 59 and received the odd smacked backside as a child. I can also remember getting a wallop on the bottom from our next door neighbour when she caught her own DD and I picking her prized roses! My parents nearly throttled me when she told them what we had done and I was kept in for 2 days!! Her DD got the same treatment of course! We were 7 at the time! I gave my own children the odd smack and had no issues with grandparents or other relatives doing so if they saw misbehaviour that I didn't. To be honest, they rarely needed it as a glare from me was enough! Attitudes are very different now and far too many parents think that no other adult has the right to even speak to a child that is misbehaving. Yes, things have changed from our day, have you required therapy for this abuse? lol

Because slapping means that the grown up has lost control of herself. There is **always** a better way to handle it. Teaching children to hit does not teach them anything good. In the uber PC world we all now reside in. Must keep reciting the mantra *all grown ups must be perfect all the time*.

Note it says KG1 or FS 2 that is reception not nursery (FS1). So there is no change on age range just the cut off dates.

So the only thing that has changed is the cut off date ie from September the 1st (except nationals who are exempt till 15th) to the 31st of December. This WILL have an effect on anyone moving back to the UK who has a child who has a Birthday from September to Dec (inc). They may well have to sit down a year, well they will in State and Private schools will base it on academic assessment.

Totally would depend on situation and who it was, if deserved (wait for that one) then no, probably not. There have been many times i wish i could have slapped quite a few children or their handlers, but have resisted temptation. Most parents don't slap others children but do tell their parents what happened and expect discipline. Most parents can discipline another's child with ease, i normally just have to look at them! lol

For a group that is very little and wont be receiving toilet assistance, I don't understand how they expect a 3 year old to be able to clean themselves properly at such a little age. Then they have swim classes which cant be good for hygiene reasons. FS1 start ages are way too early but what choice do I have otherwise? My older child was 3.8 and was able to manage much much better. Its just a matter of six months give or take and it makes a world of difference. You do not have to send your child to FS1 or FS2.

I really like Dr Saima Sheikh at Motor City. She's British (I think she said Iranian heritage), UK trained and has worked in the NHS in the UK for a number of years. Very approachable and probably the best GP I have seen in Dubai. I think lolacat recommended her too. Yes she is amazing and i always recommend her. Also Dr Carole Smilie and Dr Gilbert.

I work in the medical industry myself and the only GP I would use is dr Nadhim Mohd at symbiosis, silicon oasis. A bit out of the way yes. He is very thorough and great. I visited him for the first time last year for a thyroid problem but he still did a full body check up and he actually found out I had a problem with my heart which I need up in hospital with. Thanks to him this problem was diagnosed before any major consequences. Also, I recently had surgery and the wound looked like it got infected. The doctors I worked with just told me to take more antibiotics, it would have been the 4th course in 5 weeks! Dr Nadhim insisted on doing a swab test to find out exactly what's causing it and then to prescribe medication. Like I said, very thorough, very professional. From a medical point of view, by far the best in Dubai. Dr Gilbert is also there and is an excellent British GP.

So as an example (if this is correct) my youngest would been allowed to be in a year above as to where she is now due to a birthday past the September cut off date. If the age is 4years for FS1 then this will mean year 1 children will be 6 -7 not 5-6 as they are now. I interpret it the other way - that children will be in a year below their peers when they go home. So whereas in the UK children that turn 3-4 will be FS1, here FS1 will be children that are 3.8-4.8. It is so unclear you could well be right, it is going to be one way or another. It is just that the article states they must be 4 at the[b'> completion[/b'> of the FS1 year which would suggest all they are doing is extending the cut off date, this will mean children entering schools back in the UK will have to stay back a year.

Well i would always step in and do frequently, especially as some maids seems to lose young children rather too often. I've never had an issue and always make sure i am very open and can be seen. I think for men it is much harder and they are very wary of stepping in, however i have no doubt the men in my house would always step in if they witnessed a child in distress in any way. This case, who knows.....the guy was 80! Brought up in a generation where everyone did watch out for the young people.

For me flying directly to Amsterdam, all flight prices are the same, KLM, EK or Etihad. If EK is that awful, why are they doing so well then? I have looked at flights to London several times and BA is in no way cheaper either. We're flying to London with BA this summer for the first time in years - and on 3 fares are saving £700..we really couldn't justify the extra Emirates would cost us. We're not happy as we have no complaints about Emirates at all and the luggage allowance alone is way better than anyone else's...but the fares were just too much higher this time. But as someone else said we have never seen a flight that wasn't completely full. To the lady complaining about not taking their baby into Business - I didn't think young children were allowed in business - isn't that why some people pay to travel that way, to avoid sharing with young kids ? lol I think the OP should have addressed her post to the airline direct, bit of an odd thing to post on a forum imo. I've traveled young children in Biz (but not for a few years now!). It's a very odd thing to post and not a very wise move either. Being new to the region maybe she should familiarize with what is acceptable to post.

You could get on serious trouble for doing what you did, there are rules in place for a reason. You need to find a lawyer and divorce your DH if you are going to behave like this. Be warned if your DH gets wind that your behaviour is becoming this erratic he could well use this against you for custody. Get a shrink, get a lawyer, speak to your close friends/family and clear your computer out of all your history . There is also a group that helps with divorce, if you do a search on here you may find the name, they can help guide you and support you. A public forum is not the place to deal with this.

Surely there are only a of couple months before the end of year..............when she goes back she won't be a "new" girl any more, you may very well find that all the problems disappear. Certainly that was the case in my children's experience (and in my own, nine million years ago I changed schools probably more often than I changed schoolbags!!) First few months at any new school are hard enough, but add into that another country, it was always going to be difficult. Did they have schools in that era?

I don't think you can enforce much, photo clicking is compulsive with so many. Shoes off and not opening every cabinet or drawer i agree is pushing the boundaries of civility. You could always write a list to the agent to hand to prospective viewers prior to arrival.

Thanks everyone for reassuring me that this is probably more down to the big move, and the school/ my DD should be given more time. Have already done most of the things - after school clubs and classes, spoken to teacher, try and make it to school gates off and on, volunteer for school events, commenced refresher driving classes, organised a whole class birthday party for DD, organised her first play date, member of DESS mums FB and so forth. There have been couple of rather unpleasant incidents on the playground that DD has told me of, so I will still keep an eye on things, and I have already raised this with the teacher. It is heartbreaking to see her go through this, and I appreciate those of you who have offered kind words. Fingers crossed! Those of you who say your DDs are also new, if you fancy arranging a meet up, drop me a note on my email div22c at yah** ......d*t.... c*m. The stars are all o's obviously! Give your DD time to find her feet and try not to convey your concerns but encourage how exciting everything is. Do speak in depth with her teacher about your worries and ask her to think outside the box in making this transition smooth for your DD. Lots of praise, star of the week etc If you still have concerns speak to the Head of year or Head of Pastoral care and see what can be done to make your DD enjoy her time at school.

Expats get packages. Some get salary, allowances and rent, some get one figure and they have to work it out, some get other sorts of packages. Expats should investigate where they are moving to, costs and read and understand their contracts before they commit.

You brought up her colour , I said i doubted it had anything to do with that, but you posted it so it must be going through your head, otherwise why mention it. Re sport, I can't believe DESS do more sport than a UK school, but there we go. As stated all the BC schools here will do the same amount of sport as DESS. I don't know what your post implies TBH, what answers do you want? My point was your child is 6 years old and relocation can take some children who are not used to moving a long time to settle. 3 months is nothing in the life of a child. Have you asked your child if she is happy and what she thinks about life here, what she misses, what she would like more of? I suggest outside activities in order to meet other children.

Every other day for 3-4 minutes or once a month for 30 minutes is the advice we get in Victory Heights ... Our gardener leaves the sprinklers on for over three hours, only found out today as I was at the villa all morning, this can't be right! Really you have to ask? Of course it's not right, you need to explode at him for massive wastage and sending your DEWA bill through the roof, the guy should not be let near the water system if he does not have the brain capacity to work it. Sprinklers at this time of year twice a day for about 3 mins. edited by Lolacat on 08/05/2014

Please can anyone tell me that if you have a rent allowance in your contract, how this is done? Or what the legal procedure in Dubai is, if there is one? We were under the impression that if the Company pays your rent for the year upfront then they deduct your rent allowance from your wages monthly? Is this the way it should be? Really need some confirmation on this, thanks Rent allowance is normally separate to monthly salary, it is one of the added bonuses of being an expat. Before you sign any contract you should check this, it is a separate amount for rent that certainly does not come out of your monthly salary unless you have agreed this. How the payment is made differs from company to company.

I don't believe its the school or her colour. You have moved a 6 year child who is bright out of an environment which she has called home for years and a school that she was settled in, what do you expect? Some children and adults take a while to settle into a new environment, changing schools (especially from DESS) is the last thing you should do. You need to address the issue and encourage her to take part in other things. Repton and Foremarke are also sporty and the former is a huge huge school, if your child is shy this is the last place you should send her. You need to introduce other things into her life, play dates, drama, book clubs, dance, swimming, musical theatre, musical instruments. Look up The Music Box, they have some lovely after school clubs. She needs to get involved in sport it does not matter if she is no good but she needs to do it. If you want to stay in the more popular BC schools then sport is part and parcel of teh educational program. If not look at the Indian schools, The Modern High School at Nad Al Sheba is excellent academically, but there will be negatives compared to what you are used to.
