There is a list that schools and nurseries have from the relevant ministries with guidelines as to how long pupils have to be off school. Schools have to adhere to this and certain communicable diseases have to be reported if found in pupils. A Google will find it or your nursery will be able to provide you with a copy of their health policy. Schools are really trying their best to protect their communities their problem is that a percentage of parents seem to know better or fail to report ill health. When my kids are sick and it is a questionable one i often pop in to the school doctor and ask her advice as to whether they want said child at school, because it is the responsible thing to do. The guidelines at dd's school are that once the spots have scabbed she can go back in, so even though she is still covered in them she can return. They have not asked eldest dd to stay off just in case she might get them. Seriously how many schools would refuse siblings because their brother or sister has it and they MIGHT be carrying it?? And where would it end, which other illnesses could the same policy be used for? Then you need to direct your questions with the schools directly and if still unhappy ask the appropriate ministry. The answer to you second part is because it is down to risk and a risk evaluation is done, if the risk is high enough action needs to be taken regardless of whether it might or might not happen. When people are quarantined it is based on risk not necessarily symptoms, it's to do with exposure bla bla.

All nurseries should require the chicken pox vaccine. Then there would be nothing to worry about. If one child did happen to contract it, the odds of the other children getting it would still be very low. It's not the children you are always protecting, its pregnant women and adults. Also certain groups can not have many vaccinations and this is why you vaccinate the majority as LT stated the herd in order to protect and reduce the risks to the minority who can not be vaccinated.

Here it is! http://sg.entertainment.yahoo.com/blogs/singapore-showbiz/local-actress-oon-shu-ann-open-letter-anton-031951568.html That is a great letter and so relevant to life in Dubai too. After reading that I'm no longer going to complain about the smell in some cabs here. I[b'> do not think Dubai cabs are the same case; most taxi drivers get good amounts (compared to cashiers and salesmen) and can afford deodorants. They do not use it or shower frequently because of cultural reasons, not poverty.[/b'> Bearing in mind the thread content i really can not believe you have just written what you have............this is exactly what the guy did he made a silly statement on a public base............when will people learn to engage their brains before they type?

I think some of you are missing the point! What Singaporeans are angry about is what he said in regards to "washing the smell" off him from the public transport. That's what has affected people the most. If i can find the link I will post what a Singaporean actress has said about "the smell" comment. It was well written and worth reading. Are the Singaporeans really that bothered? Seriously who cares people say things everyday that will offend someone in the world. Meanwhile back in the real world there are some really serious issues that those who wish to rant and set up campaigns against can. North Korea anyone?

Asking siblings to stay home feels like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Given that you can be infectious up to 10 days after onset of symptoms and incubation can be up to 21 days, if you want to be really socially responsible that would mean 31 days isolation. Do you really think people should isolate for 31 days just be on the safe side? In the past couple of years that would have meant 3 months off school for my one child who never contracted chicken pox despite is three siblings doing so. My husband hasn't had chicken pox either. As the majority of fatal cases are adults and he comes in to contact with far more adults during the course of his day than my children do, should he have taken 3 months off work? He'd be told to return or be fired. The serious consequences of road accidents far outweigh the serious consequences of chicken pox per capita. In order to be socially responsible should we then all decide not to use cars? Of course not. We minimise the risk through seat belts, airbags and taking care (some of us) and go about our lives hoping for the best. With chicken pox you can choose to minimise the risk through vaccinating your family and in the event of contracting it, staying home for the duration of the infectious period. They are being asked for a two week stay away, not three months, get this into perspective. Cars and communicable disease are incomparable.

Many moons ago i had a nice dose of impetigo on my face, i informed my child's school at the time as this comes under a communicable disease, he was not allowed to attend school for two weeks even though he nor his siblings nor any member of the household had it. This was in the UK. I was a full time working mum and just had to cope, I'm afraid when you have children you have to bear with such things and be responsible. On a side note my DH many moons ago also came down with Chicken pox as an adult and he suffered terribly and was off work for 3 weeks. I'm afraid you can argue the point as much as you like but the nursery has told you their policy and LT has spelled it out loud and clear.

Back to the original point, as asked by the OP.............should apparently unaffected siblings be forced to stay at home in the case of infectious disease ,when that disease has well documented potentially serious implications for others? To me the answer to that is quite clear, a resounding yes, until the incubation period is over. The greater good of the community far outweighs any temporary personal inconvenience. It's called responsible membership of society. As is availing ourselves of inoculation, it creates herd immunity which is our greatest, and perhaps only. defense against infectious disease. The most intelligent well put together post for a long long time, could not agree more!

Do you send your kids on camp Lolacat? If you can afford it do they go? or do you not send them on principle and they miss out? Just interested to know. I personally don't know of any children in Dubai from an International School going on an Ecoventrue camp at the age of 7. Maybe the local schools do ( I don't Know) but all others I believe are year 4 or mostly 5 onwards. I have a 7 year old and believe me she would love to go if she had the chance. My kids do many varied after school activities but this does not include staying over night away from parents with their peers which is what school camps offer. They would not be "school camps" if they were not held within term time. As for cost, yes they may be pricey ( I have 3 kids so yes I know) my eldest has been on Ecoventure 3 x and my middle one will be going in a few weeks time. Unfortunately thats the cost here so not much you can do about it! Love it or leave it! My older ones have done camps in Europe and school specialist academic away (field trips), which were excellent and great value for money, factoring what they learnt and what they did. Europe/US/Canada has some amazing summer camps for kids and extremely reasonable re price for what you get. Children mix with children they have never met and get to learn lots of new skills as well as getting immersed in a new language. For example last year one of mine attended a camp for 150 euros for the week!! On principle in answer to your question as i see them as far too expensive. A tent in the garden and some friends over for younger children is just as much fun and zero cost. And yes some schools offer from year 3 which is 7 to 8 years.

I totally embrace the idea of the camp, and feel that it is valuable in the kid's development. But I object to being ripped off!; my school = 1,050 AED/night Kaz1 = 600 AED/night teftee = 530 AED/night The frustrations of being at a profit school! Miss those days of transparency and accountability... But you have the choice as a parent.

I really don't understand why parents seem to believe their children need to go on these things at such young ages. I really don't comprehend why you are prepared to pay such an exorbitant amount ether, more money than common sense comes to mind. Why? because it encourages independence and mixing with friends in a different environment from that at school, learning to get along with different people. Do things they would not always do. 9-10 year olds are not too young for camp… sometimes its the overprotective parents that do more damage to the children. The umber of times I have sat in the Ecoventure briefing before camp and listened to parents ask stupid questions like "what if my child does not like the food?" or " Is the tent comfortable?". Unfortunately if thats the price here you have to pay then so be it. The kids always seem to have a lot of fun with Ecoventure and I would rather send them there then anywhere else. You can embrace independence in many other ways, sending them on an overpriced camp for one night is not the be all of child development. Activities outside of school develop independence, discipline, skills and mixing with others not in their school community. Joining a professional organization here and providing your children with learning a new skill is far more beneficial and value for money! These camps start at year 3 therefore that is 7 years old, not 9 or 10. As for stupid questions, every parent has the right to ask whatever they want and any person associated with such companies should be prepared to answer and respect those who ask. If parents have to ask they have concerns and these should be taken seriously not mocked and deemed stupid. I don't have an issue with camps for children i have an issue with them being held in term time, and at exorbitant cost. You don't have to pay, that's the point.

Nightmare! Do your two kids sleep in the same room? Would that or has that helped? Sounds as if you need to get to the bottom of her fear of the dark, maybe try some therapy? Does she sleep with a special toy? How much TV does she get? Have you tried taking away all TV and ipad for a while and speaking to her about dreams? Nice dreams? Suggesting things she could dream about. Star chart? It's really debilitating for you but my gut says there are two ways to deal with this, the hard approach or the understanding proactive one where you may need to get some outside help and get to the bottom of the issue. My gut says that for some reason she is insecure and she doesn't know why herself and as the adult you have to help her work out why and reassure her that her deep reasons are null and void. Much easier in writing than in practice! Re school, talk with the teacher and ask for some leniency for a while, have you considered pressure at school as well? Is she better during the holidays?

Dear Ann I just wanted to say how brave you have been to come on to the forum and i really hope that someone out there maybe can point you in the right direction or may have experienced something similar. Thanks to DR 1958 this forum is familiar with mental health issues, so please don't feel there is stigma here. I can not imagine how hard this is for you and your family to deal with. You also must also find support as trying to cope with this as the primary care giver must be incredibly tiresome, frustrating and worrisome. I'm quite interested in your post and if it's not too personal can i ask what sort of age range you are dealing with and was there a specific that set this off (depression) or is your son bipolar? Please don't feel you have to share/answer and please don't put too much down that is personal to you on a public forum. Have you looked into support forums online that are more specific to your sons illness, sometimes these can be very helpful and you can share your daily traumas with others in the same boat and gain some real support from them and advice. Funnily i was only reading this one last night about another mental health issue in children. http://www.thelittleprince.org/Index.html In Dubai there is senses, which is not really the right place for your son by the sound of it but it may be able to advice further as to therapists or anything else,. http://www.sensescentre.com/who-we-help.html Depending on severity you may have to look at relocating back to your home country for more specialized help. Good luck and thank you for posting.

Twirl I try to see two sides to all questions and I can see for many the school bus system is a must and certainly a far easier choice for many, if not a logical one. BUT, personally i dispare with parents who put young children on school buses when they don't absolutely have to and wonder what planet they are on. The early school years are so important for a young child that any parent who can take their child to school and chooses not to in my view is missing out, adding unnecessary stress to their child and upping the risk factors. The average school bus takes far longer to arrive home,is incredibly hot during the summer months and children are being put into the hands of people who don't know them and exposed to older children and what comes out of their mouths. It can be extremely traumatic for young children, many some schools will not encourage it. Part of the job of parenting is the school run in my opinion, i have in 20 years never allowed my children to travel on school buses even when i worked full time, that time with them in the car and being able to speak to their teacher is something i feel is invaluable. But that is personal choice and one that as a control freak i have made and adhered to. So in my honest opinion to you based on your question, no it is your responsibility to take your child and parenting is not always about taking the easy option. If you feel uncomfortable about it then go with your gut and don't do it because you will spend every waking minute worrying if your child is safe and going to make it home without incident.

You have to look at this another way, really, far too much emphasis is put on all this natural birth/c sec dilemma. Fundamentally you have to somehow get something the size of a football out, if the best way to do that for you is c sec then so be it. PND can effect anyone regardless of whether DHL deliver it or you do. The priority is to end up with a healthy baby and healthy mother and that has to be a priority. Finding a really good Ob and trusting them is the way to go forward. Discuss all your concerns and the pros and cons of both with your trusted Ob, then make a decision as to what you feel happiest doing. I advise you as one mother who has had the births that would turn the hardest into quivering wrecks, given the choice now vasectomy wins every time!

Look I have no issue with flight attendants - they do a grand job. My observations are based on having flown at least 50x over the last few years and seeing what they do. I also know many, and in all their years of flying, 99% of their flights consist of the drudgery of the job followed by a party-fuelled few days in a foreign city. They are very helpful and do their jobs well, but why imbue them with this over-inflated sense of importance? If the plane came down, they wouldn't be flying it, if someone has a heart attack, they are first aid trained only and usually require a Dr on board to step in, if someone acts out of line then yes they step in. But they are not God and shouldn't be telling anyone not to drink Pepsi, is my point! Ha Ha better then calling them some of the names they were known by (a quick google will enlighten)! lol Seriously nanny state or what? What is the right manner to make a child understand what is right in this scenario? Hi mssassy We all deal with things differently but for me, the right way to deal with this scenario would be to give my child extra reassurance and love at what can be a very difficult time for a young child. She's not reacting to the sleepover, that might have been the final trigger but her behaviour stems from struggling with her feelings about the new baby. She is too young to rationalise with about the situation (as your sister is trying to do). Calling her 'a bad girl' (as your mother did) is only going to re-inforce her negative feelings, as will threatening to punish her like your BIL suggests. What your father said is just plain wrong (sorry) and it's obviously not a viable option. All of my children's worries about a new sibling started a few weeks after arrival once the excitement has calmed down and they realise the new baby is here to stay. It's a much more common time than straight after the birth. Her behaviour stems from fear and hurt, she doesn't need punished or threatened. She needs love, consistentcy and reassurance. It can be a tough time but if you all work from the same page, she'll be fine soon. You are correct Daza but i would also suggest that this little lady has been a spoilt pre-madonna and the parents are reaping what they have sown. Some serious behaviour and parental management need to come into play before she gets older. They need to read some positive parenting books or seek professional advice to help them change their daughter's behaviour.

Whether true or not the this thread has had a enormous amount of views, all good for business! What i find rather disturbing and distasteful is how many posters jump on the aggressive band wagon and throw out statements that long term could in fact be extremely detrimental to the parties concerned. These same statements get thrown out every time such a thread appears. No one knows this marriage or the problems in it, no one knows the other party yet so many are quick to shout police, ban, sacking, bad husband, single women are trouble, bla bla. I'm sure many of us know someone who has been in such a situation yet their OH's spin a different tale of woe, when relationships breakdown perspectives can quickly become confused in my experience. What gets forgotten and especially in this thread is that there is a child involved in all of this and regardless of what *we* may feel like doing when a poster is in a vulnerable place, spouting revenge is often very short sighted. The long term effects on children whose parents divorce is huge and good communication between all parties is essential for a child's emotional welfare if contact is to continue. To have someone sacked, banned etc will never be forgotten by the other party and will always cause a problem within the family dynamics. All well and dandy for adults but it's not all right for children and at the end of the day they should be the priority in any marriage or breakdown of marriage. (IMHO) So next time one of these threads appears I just wonder if posters would like to think a little more before they type about the innocent party in all these horrible situations and offer advice that is thought out and not detrimental to the long term. (hope that makes sense) In all the years i have watched EW very few of these threads ever appear that realistic, sometimes there is a run of them and it is quite clear all is not what is meant to be. However, one thread has always stuck in my mind and it never really got the response it deserved, partly due to having soo many of these suspect threads running at the time. I'm not sure if anyone will remember the lady who asked for help to get back to the UK as she was very sick, sadly she died very shortly after making it back to the UK. Edited to add that i have been sitting on my hands wanting to say this but due to the mob mentality that normally prevails when anyone suggests anything other i couldn't be bothered to be honest. Also apologies in advance for those who will come back with the *you are perfect line* lol <em>edited by Lolacat on 09/01/2014</em>
