I'm guessing that Obama will win. I don't bother voting because I don't believe that either candidate (I am talking about all presidential elections.) will change anything. Personally, if I voted, I'd vote for Romney because he seems like a really nice guy. I like Obama too but I'm a bit sick of his arrogance. Anon I'm surprised you base your vote on "he seems like a really nice guy", have you heard his policy on Iran? (Not sure policy is right word) edited by Lolacat on 06/11/2012

You can have the same gas you have for the house, just call one of the gas companies to deliver and fit, around 60 dh for small bottle refill and more as a deposit.

Does any one else think it perculiar that schools are offering educational programs at extra cost?? Just how much schooling does a child need, sport would be so much better IMHO.

I think they just want to for fun..? I told her I would have to ask my husband. I guess I can just say, "he said no" Maybe in the future, I should just say to her, "you need to ask my husband these questions." Probably would solve that problem. ;-) I'm just joking. I'll tell her we aren't comfortable with it. I think it is a very reasonable question, why does your maid need her friend to stay over, why not ask her and see what she says.

[color=#000000'>[/color'>Thank you Desert Rose for your kind comments and yes you are right it has been a big struggle the last two years trying to figure out what was going on with my son. Many professionals here just had no clue, school has also been very difficult as we had no clue what was going on and have worked with them very fairly. It has taken 2 years to get to were we are now at a lot of expense Lola cat I am not sweeping this issue under the carpet,as a mum I just wanted to know my rights as a parent of a child with ADHD. I am not going to explain anymore as it is a long story... [b'>I have no wish to read a long story, you asked simply if you should inform the school of the new diagnosis and medication situation, the answer is yes. The rest of the posts you can take or leave as everyone has an opinon based on their experiences or veiws. I ask you one thing though and that is to strongly think about whether the school your son is attending is the correct school for him, from your wording in your posts I'm not so sure. A school change can sometimes work wonders, don't rule it out. Some schools here are just not interested in having any children who don't fit in the box and some schools have narrow boxes. There are however many schools here that will without any problem accept a child with ADHD. A support forum may also be valuable for you to find out which schools are doing the very best for children with ADHD. Thank you all for your wonderful stories and responses,it is sad when some people get so negative but ho ho it is a forum. Hugs to you and your family Desert Rose you got me spot on....[/b'> edited by Lolacat on 24/10/2012

Morning Ladies, Looks like I opened a big can of worms yesterday by asking this question. Also good to know I am not alone as a lot of children do have some form of ADHD.. Just to let you know I spoke to the KDHA this morning regarding my sons situation and informing school, they are very supportive and under no circumstances can a child be discriminated against or suggested to leave...So shall tackle school after the half term holiday...Would also like to know if Concerta is available in Dubai? Good day to everyone ;););) Nelly,I am struggling to understand your concerns to be honest. You have stated that age 6 your child already has a full time shadow teacher with him in school. Yet you are concerend about going to the school and telling them a diagnosis, and that your son has to take medication at this time. Correct yes? Do you think the school are not already aware there is an issue with your son? The fact he has a full time shadow at 6 kinda shouts it out loud. Yet you are worried with confirming there is a diagnosis and your son (who already has a full time shadow) will be discriminated against? Discrimination is already in place but it sounds as if your school are commnuicating well with you about his behaviour as you state his behaviour has improved and he is being praised. There is no debate about telling a school if a child is on any form of medication or has an issue/diagnosis that needs some thought. TO not inform those who care for your son actually would and could work against your son and as Desert rose said be life threating should the medication not be on his records. A school can apply to remove a child for all sorts of reasons, poor behaviour being one of them. It's difficult but possible, and if a school does that or suggests it then it is not the right school in the first place. An honest and open relationship bewteen you and the school will benefit one person who is at the end of the day the most important in this situation, and that is your child. Trying to sweep an issue under a carpet and pretend it's not there and not discussing it with teachers who are instrumental in your childs daily life will be very detrimental to your son. What you need is to work out with the school an open and honest communication policy where all parties are working together on the same page for the benefit of your child. I would also suggest you join a support group to help you and give you alternatives etc.

Wow! I've only been away from my computer for an hour! Thank you for all your replies. Our housemaid has already completed one year with us - successfully. She came from another British family who over paid her - which the lady even admitted too at the time. She paid her AED 3100 a month. I offered her AED2300 and she accepted (despite my husband being wary that she would not be happy with that salary!). She had been priced out of themarket by her former employee. She only works 5 days for me so I thought she would be quite happy. She was happy for renewal and she got a AED 100 pay rise. She was paid for her holiday and I gave her a flight allowance because she wanted to stay in UAE over summer. Fine! No problems! I'm just really angry because she presented me a letter written in Romanian, from the Romanian Embassy, stating her VISA was under application! Her Cousin had been helping her to find a job. She made me feel awful because she kept saying that she respects me so much she wanted to inform me of her plans!!!!! She didn't seem to understand my annoyance! Hubby was angry with her because letter from Embassy was dated 24 Aug, just a couple of weeks after we renewed her VISA - which means she has been planning it for a while and MUST have known about it before we did VISA. I don't want to keep her against her will, I have small children who she looks after, but similarly can't afford to just accept that she can leave and I'm out that amount of money! What a drama.....need to really think this through. MAy pursue the passport ting actually - then I feel like I'm in control. Am happy to negotiate her release (sorry to use that word - it sounds awful) but under my terms so we all are happy! She is an adult and needs to a) be treated like one but also accept that she is one and therefore WILL BE TREATED LIKE ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again - keep on posting! Wow, Romainian Embassy? Hope the poor dear is not being scammed somehow! Good luck with whatever you do, having small children in the house for sure she would be gone in my house, not worth the risk.

Morning Ladies, This is my first post I really have no were else to turn. My son has been having issues at school regarding Behaviour and we have had to keep a shadow in school with him.He is 6 years old, this summer we got a diagnosis of ADHD and very reluctantly started him on on a small dosage of 5 mg quick release Ritalin to help with his concentration and focus at school. This is the only med available here. On a positive note it has helped him whilst at school and his teachers are praising him. They are not aware of his diagnosis or that he is having medication in the morning,as we have had such a horrible time and he has been treated like some kind of Alien.he is a sweet funny child and hasn't deserved to be treated the way he has. The problem I have is the medication start's to have less effect towards the end of the school day and he has become a little silly in the last 10 mins of the school day. I really do not want to medicate my son again,or have him sent to the nurse to give medication, but it is really helping him throughout the morning.I am also trying to have him be independent and without a shadow,as his Behaviour and work focus are now good, except on some occasions he gets a little silly towards the end of the day..which is letting him down and giving the school an excuse to keep the shadow...... Do I inform the School? What to do? I really don't want him labelled or to give them an excuse to ask my son to leave......He is a bright little boy now reaching his full potential, all we need is support and not to be judged unfairly. He doesn't have medication in the afternoon and is fine at home, the only issues are with school. Advice really needed........ :( You must disclose to the schools and disuss it with the relevant parties involved with your son for your son's welfare. Should you not disclose you may find that the school can ask you to remove your son from the school for not disclosing (check small print on T & C's). If you really feel the issues are only at school you should take this up with the school and see what an be done, triggers etc.

Im speaking from expereince. I withheld a previous housemaids salary and when I took her to the airport, she told one of the officials that i have not paid her in over 6 months!!! reality was I withheld 2 months salary to cover my expenses as I sacked her. I got a right telling off from the guy in immigration at the airport. he told me no matter what she has done wrong, she is entitled to a salary and if she mis behaved that is my fault ! I had to pay her 4 months worth of salary ! I was livid ! Thank you Mushypeas would hate for misinformation to be sugested!!!!!!!!!!!! I had heard this as well and that employers should have a salary book that gets signed each month by both parties to avoid this one, but would obviously need that to be confirmed by someone as correct!!!!!! lol

The maid must fulfill her contract, and you must keep her passport otherwise the expenses will increase when she absconds. If she does abscond then the first question from immigration will be to ask you why she had her passport. She is not subject to labor laws her in the UAE but to immigration laws. As a domestic worker she should not have been job seeking so soon after signing a new contract. You would be best to hold her salary from now on until her departure from the UAE, which by the way would be straight back to her homeland. Now who is correct here? One poster has stated you must not with hold salary and you are suggesting it here, so which is correct??

Lolacat - Maids are NOT subject to the UAE Labour laws and Immigration will tell you to hold their passports. This does not mean that they are mistreated by their employers. You should stop misleading people on issues that you clearly don't understand. FYI - if you are not happy about it, complain to the Head of Immigration to have the laws changed. until then, I intend to hold my maids passport for safe keeping What? I have had maids for years and never held a passport yet! I am not misleading anyone (i don't think) just stated and made that clear my thoughts n the matter to a post asking for feedback and thoughts!!!!!

My thoughts as you ask is to let your maid go, she obviously wants to and in my book you have no right to hold another against their whishes. The sponsorship issue is one you need to speak to her about and negotiate a settlement between both parties, ie no gratutity or holiday pay. It's frustrating from your side to say the least but keeping an employee who does not want to stay will be even more frustrating long term for you. Make sure you document everything and get her to sign an agreement regarding settlement that you put in place post negotiation. I disagree; iif you sign a contract; you honour that contract. But she hasn't has she, so one has to deal with the issue in hand not about honour and morals. Should everyone be held to contract whatever the circumstances due to honour? Why fight a losing battle, if she stays she will run and be miserable and the employer will also be miserable for another 9 months. Why not just negotiate a settlement and all parties walk away somewhat satisfied? This is the logial grown up way IMHO to resolve what is already an issue. Sure. 5'500 AED is roughly 3 months salary. So the maid works the next 3 months without salary and then she leaves? Is that what you are advocating? Normally when an employee leaves there is gratutity, holiday pay, flights etc to be paid deduct those and then negotiate the rest, as she has already worked 3 months of her sponsorship that must be calulated (deducted) and I thought the renewal fee was Dh.5100. It's a pain for the OP but personally i would never hold anyone in employment if they wished to leave, even more so in a house.

[b'>[/b'>No she cannot leave until her contract is over. She has just signed another contract in August she has to stay till the end. Then your job is to end the visa and fly her to her home country. The end. These maids have no thought or care about money. Correct. You hold all the cards. she must work out her contract or reimburse you for the costs. As she wont have the money, then she will have stay until next August. Be prepared for a sulky maid! I feel sorry for you. [b'>Oh - make sure you have her passport[/b'> Does your employer hold your passport? No but I am subject to Labout Law, the Maid is not. She has renewed her contract with the family for one year on the basis that she would fulfil her obligations while in the meantime she was canvassing other jobs abroad. This is dishonest towards the employer as she has spent alot of money to keep her. Either the maid pays up to break the contract and then leaves ( with passport in hand) or she works her contract ( without passport in hand) as she is likely to do a runner. She will run whatever.

hendy if you have tried using the water spray effectively and had no luck have you tried scruffing him and throwing him off when he bites you? Many will disagree i'm sure but sometimes you just do get these feral type cats that have aggressive behaviours and little you do will resolve the issue. You have done everything for this cat and at the end of the day if the cat does not fit into the family home he has to go, there are many many lovely civilised cats out there in desperate need of a home who will give you pleasure to have as a family member, don't feel too bad it sounds as if you have tried everything.

Dear Hendy can i suggest that you invest in some water spray bottles and place them around the house, as soon as any negative behaviour is seen from your cat spray him hard and mutter a word he will recognise in the future. Aggression with hand reared local cats is quite normal and at 8 months old your cat is going through his teenage phase, testing all boundaries. When you retort with aggression however small with a cat like this they tend to think it's a great challenge and reciprocate with aggressive beahviour back and the issue gets worse. If your cat is allowed out i would encourage more of that as well. Also try looking for a low protien food, some of the vets stock this. Maybe an old stuffed toy he can play with and beat up and trim his nails with some nail clippers. Try the above for a while and teach your daughter how to spray the cat when his behaviour is not nice, make sure when he is civil you treat him as normal with gentleness. I fully appreciate your difficulties and if you can not find a new home for your cat then please don't listen to anyone who puts guilt on you for taking your cat to your vets to be euthanised. It is a far kinder and responsible option, good luck.

Yes, that is the time when expat mothers pick up their kids from school. :) Why single out the expat mothers specifically? It's also the time (at my children's school at least) that the local mothers pick up their children from school. Actually the majority of mothers picking up from school are expat. Most local mothers use drivers and buses, very few drive themselves. I live in a predominantly local community and it would be a rare thing to see any of the Moms driving their kids to school. Regretably the nicest of drivers turn mad once they move here I have friends from the UK who when behind the wheel of a car here turn into a loony whilst in the UK they drive to the law. When i first moved here i was told so many times that you have to drive a certain way ( badly) otherwise you will never get anywhere ( I dont by the way) Quite a statement to make.

An offensive statement regardless and if you actually look at the statistics printed every year you will see which groups from which nations are involved in the most accidents here. Expat mothers are nowhere near the top! Goverment and working hours may be a more realistic to consider??

I think your best bet would to be to ask the schools where you are thinking of enrolling him - it does seem it is disadvantageous for many children to be the youngest in their class and that they fare much better in the end by being the eldest. I've no idea as my daughter and I are April born. My husband is September born and was always the youngest in his year. He did fine academically but is emotionally immature still and he's nearly 60, though that might not be because of the school system ;) September would make him the oldest in a year group (in UK system).

What's with all the "not western" stuff? Finding school places is hard REGARDLESS of colour/creed/religion/passport!!! Stay away from popular schools is advice? Umm why do you think they are popular? umm could it be due to their inspection ratings and results???? And as you have no experience from your post of any non IB school perhaps you should reframe from implying that teaching methodology is superior in IB schools!!!!! On a positive i am please you have found a place and are happy with your school.
