Hi, My son is nearly 5 years old in a few months and currently in an IB school in kg 2. I'm worried as his reading is still at level 1 (Oxford reading tree ) . He loves books but wants me to read to him . When I do try and get him to read the kipper books , he will memorise the words but not learn how to read them properly through phonics. I spoke to his teacher at school and she said to relax . However I feel quite worried as he should be reading by himself a lot more now. I thought being British would have been an advantage and he would have picked things up quicker. I know he is very young but I don't want him to left behind , how can I get him to improve ? I thought of getting a tutor to help with reading and writing as with me he tends to get frustrated easily and doesn't try as hard . any advice or similar experiences please would be greatly appreciated !! I know I'm sounding neurotic but the school is pretty competitive and I just want him to progress. Sorry but i only had to read the first line , he is at an IB school, he will not be reading for yonks yet! Firstly he needs to learn his phonics, secondly reading level one without phonic knowledge is pretty good at 5. He is sight reading from recall, you need to work on his phonics. There is an argument that says he will not be left behind if your follow the IB route, if you change to a BC school he will be more advanced at this point but not necessarily later on. The worst thing you can do is put pressure on, you make the school choice then stick with it and let them do their job how they do it in that school. And being British has nothing to do with reading!

Yes Sals, the animals are a big worry. Personally I am talking about a military aggression scenario where you have to act quickly. I have children. I would have to make them a priority over animals. What to do??? The thought of it makes me cry already. Our dog is very old and deaf. It's not like there would be any friends here you could ask to take the animals? Ugh, I don't want to think about this any more tonight. I just hope sanity prevails and this all remains hypothetical. If it comes down to an aggressive scenario where you might have to flee in the darkness of night with a passport and file, it might be kinder to have a plan in place to euthanize your pets. As bad as it sounds, it would be kinder to the pets. (some pills perhaps? I don't know much about this). Some expats were allowed to take their pets on evactuation flights out of some ME countires last year. Others stayed behind and looked after peoples animals. There are NO pills you can hold for euthanasia!!!!! Really ?? That would ease my worries by a million time. Ok so cross that off your worry list..........never going to happen anyway.

It is apparently an issue with the Ministry of Education upgrading to an online Registration System. It seems that every student in Dubai needs to be uploaded onto the online system or they will not be able to attend school. Perhaps the OP should try the MoE call centre on 80051115 and see what they say about her particular circumstances, as she surely can't be the only one in this position? Interesting i would have thought KHDA would be able to help as well. Are the Ministry and the KHDA sort of interchangeable? I just posted the number I found for the Ministry call centre in the hope it would help. With any luck, the school's registrar will have been able to explain it to the OP. There surely still must be some leeway given for new arrivals to Dubai, given how long we all know it can take for residence visas to be issued. No, but they communicate with each other and both parties should be approached to see if their is an amicable solution to help the OP.

Being bombed out of their beds. Although the night before last I had a very vivid dream where I was thrown out of bed and against the wall by an earthquake. I must be on a different planet because for the life of me I can never imagine this happening here or even think about it as a possibility. And if you were in bed and dropped on you wouldn't have to worry about an evacuation plan would you? Far too many reading hyped up nonsense with biast from various parties. Register with your embassy and carry on life as normal! when i was in Riyadh, a Ministry building was bombed in the middle of the night, the shock of the bomb blast bumped me out of bed; i was about a mile away...... I At that time the risks were well known in that place, you lived it, prepared for it, you made an informed choice to take that risk of being there. Big difference between then there and now here for many reasons. It's all about risk assessment and perspective and if some are seriously that concerned they had better leave now. This is a huge concern for the OP and what was ok i understand has now changed and a real tightening up of rules and regs everywhere is happening. To have a child in school in Dubai you have to have a residents visa, that I understand to be the bottom line. I would speak to yours school registrar and see if this is a KHDA matter. If so you can visit KHDA and speak with them directly and see if they can help. The school will be following directives set out for them by their governing body so you need to go to that body which i presume will be KHDA.

No i would not take it at all. Having sufffered severely from sickness in all my pregnancies i understand what you are going through. I would try natural methods, diet, tricks like having a ginger biscuit beofre getting out of bed. I would then go back and ask for much safer choices, that are safe.

You can grow both outside but not yet, too hot, wait a month. Buy from super market or garden centre/warsan and shove in ground, both will grow like weeds. The basil needs continual deheading to prevent flowering and encourage new growth.

This past few months just went horribly wrong.... In July i lost my 2 beloved dogs in a horrible accident, 2 months later me and DH split up, i moved out of our home and had to get throu what seemed to be the worst time of my life, yesterday our little puppy Loki had passed away from poisoning.....Just an innocent 5 months old little puppy, that loved everybody....I hadn't seen him in weeks, didnt have a chance to say good bye..... Nobody is around to talk to, and things just seem to be getting worst, how do you get over so many events happening around you, that force you and drag you down?! i cant wait to see anything positive happening really.... :(( Just winding up, not making so much sense, but then again, not much makes sense at the moment anyways! On the bright side it can't get much worse, so therefore it can only get better?

I'm sorry you had a problem but i don't understand your gripe particularly. It's very simple, major emergency get to Rashid via car or ambulance. Other emergencies get in a car to the hospital of your choice. Talking on a phone in a country with so many different cultures and languages dodgy choice and if an emergency how can you expect any medical professional or not to treat or diagnose over a phone line? If you are concerned you go in, same any where. Sniffing medication directly from a bottle unless specified on the instructions is not a great idea, are you cross at your DH or the hospital? I have to disagree - I think a quick phone call to an ER to determine whether a case is serious or not is a good idea rather than trekking down to a hospital 30 mins drive away at midnight, when I am 7 months pregnant. And as for language, I can overlook that people's English is not perfect in a mall, a restaurant or a bank, but in a hospital ER you should be able to be understood quickly, and have a sense of urgency since lives are at stake. No one should be in any patient contact unless they can make themselves understood and can understand basic instructions. And yes, it says on the instructions to inhale from the bottle. I am a native english speaker and i struggle at times with what other native english speakers sometimes say! Yes it was frustrating, yes it was an accident, yes your 7 months pregnant, but at the end of the day you spoke to a doctor and made an informed decision/choice.

Maybe it is a British concept, but people are encouraged in the UK to do just this. Medical professionals are trained to ask the right questions to get the facts in order to get to the bottom of the problem. Questioning is almost as important as poking, prodding and looking. Ask any doctor. If you are not certain it is an emergency, then by phoning you get (in theory) proper advice. If not an emergency, then not only have you saved yourself time and a trip, but you free up the medical staff to deal with more serious cases. Of course, if you believe it to be an emergency, or are in any doubt, then get yourself to the hospital. Yes but we are not in the UK, we are in the middle east where there is no NHS, again most doctors would probably advise if you are concerned to visit in person, they can not be held responsible for advice given over the phone (or should not be).

I do not think it is too much to expect that every worker answering a telephone, particularly in a hopsital ER, shoud be completely fluent in either of these 2 languages. I am sure every doctor here is fluent in either English or Arabic, and that should be the case for anyone answering a medical emergency line edited by Arch on 16/09/2012 Even if a hospital employs a full time doctor to answer the phone they still can not make a diagnosis over the telephone, they will always say come in. The OP did get to speak to a doctor in the end. Had the phone been answered in Arabic the language of the country resided there would have been the same if not a greater problem! I am still failing to see this is a major hospital fault, frustrating yes but in the end the client spoke to a doctor. Just because one phone call was frustrating due to a language barrier does not IMHO mean a whole hospital should be deemed a disaster. The person in question should write to the hospital managment about her concerns. JMHO

It baffles me when I hear refereces to problems with Iran, as unless I'm missing something Iran hasn't said they are going to attack anyone and indeed don't have a history of attacking other countries. We should be more worried about the 'Israel Problem'. missing something.

The Iran stuff I am burying my head in the sand about !!!!! yikes I was referring to the recent anti-american protests at Embassies in the region, as a direct result of that disgusting film which has caused massive insult and repulsion around the globe. I doubt anything here. I can not see the benefits of violent protesting especially with what has sadly taken place. It's the whole irony of free speech.

We had to provide copies of our visa renewals for our account with the four letter bank, I thought this was standard procedure and therefore would make sense that no new cards etc could be issued unless the new visa information was updated and provided. and did they contact you and ask you for this info? Can't remember but don't think so, I seem to think that i needed a new cheque book and went in to ask why i had not been sent a new one was issued and told of the problem (need new visa copy). This is HSBC telling me I don't have a visa........wrong I do.......we don't have a copy of it.......well that's a different story...:\: Yes that would make sense, just take a copy into one of the satalite branches and all should be ok, I had to do this for both DH and I when we renewed our visa's.

Really? Even if they are never opened in original packaging? There was a place that always took meds for palestine, dont remember the name though. Oh well, I will just give them to the pharmacy. I usually rather not waste, u thought someone could use them. Thanks. Why not keep until expiry date?

Why not check this information with DEFRA as the cat must of had an import licence and therefore an address of owner in the UK? Also check with the RSPCA and see if they can help chasing the owner.
