Thanks Lola, my doctor seems to be good..just that I am very irky about vaccinations. Not sure whether 2 yrs is right age for this or should I wait till she is a little older as in any case from what I have read, this vaccination can be taken anytime from 2 - 55 yrs..I have too many questions. Have you given this vaccination to your child? if so at what age?? Yes to all my children and as soon as possible, please please do not believe the vaccination scaremongering that goes on. Please read these two links. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2868577/Heartwarming-picture-shows-brave-toddler-lost-four-limbs-meningitis-learning-crawl.html http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic231640-has-anyone-chosen-not-to-vaccinate-their-children.aspx

I would suggest you change your Doctor who can explain the importance of such a vaccination. I would not have my children unvaccinated the consequences are horrendous. The side effects are negligible. The Meningitis vaccine here is better than in the UK as it covers more strains.

Hi Lolacat, Thanks a lot for your message. We do have our “worldly” differences, just like every other couple. At some point, we used to have a lot of problems and tension – because I personally was falling more in love and it kept getting more painful the more I knew there would be no future to this. We put it on hold for a while and decided to start fresh – which is why I’m here. To be honest, this subject isn't very important to me right now. But at the same time, I could be saying this based on pure emotions. And again, I know that this could change in the future and it could start being extremely important for me, or the opposite. I know that at this point in my life – I would like to raise my kids the way I was raised. I know it sounds selfish because there sure are a lot of people out there who are way better than me in a lot of ways. But if I’m being honest, this is how I feel at this point. I really want him to start seeing things from my point of view especially that I’m trying to see things from his perspective as well. I am fully aware that it would never be a healthy relationship if we both cannot respect each other’s beliefs - which is why I feel that it would be extremely helpful if I could find someone who has recently converted to Islam or started to explore the religion in an intellectual manner. Again, I have no intention in changing him in any way. Thank you :) DubaiLynn you sound very intelligent and I think there is nothing wrong or selfish about wanting to raise your children the way you were raised. I think you need to make the choice for you. What are you searching for exactly? Marriage is never easy, there always has to be give and take, obviously when children appear stresses and strains increase on certain issues. There is no magic answer to this. It does sound to me as if you have now reached a time in your life when you are ready to settle and have children and you are slightly fearful of making a mistake. As well as lovers you have to be best friends,to be able to agree and disagree. It's a tough one, but what makes you a great couple and are you best friends? Is this a warning system telling you no, don't do it or is this you stepping out of a comfort zone of always having had control over your life? What is the worst case scenerio and what is the best case? Good luck with your choice, whatever that may be, you sound a lovely person, I hope this chap is worthy of you!

I'm also baffled by the term [i'>burnt the bill[/i'> Desperate, for those of us in the dark, please can you clarify what you mean by this? Did they actually set fire to it?? Didn't like to say either, but what the heck does burnt the bill actually mean? Surely there is a bill with a breakdown of costs? What did the OP say when asked if she had insurance? Was this an out of hours emergency visit? Was this a plastic surgeon or regular doctor at the clinic? Were their other items handed out? SOrry to say little makes much sense.

The question is that you have to answer and him is; is everything else you have in your relationship together strong enough to respect each other’s difference of opinion over this topic? How important is this subject to you and your future life? Many married couples do manage to have different religions or differences and still have strong marriages, but only the two individuals within the relationship can really know if this is or isn't an issue. The fact you write on here and are thinking so strongly about it is a very positive thing, because you have acknowledged before going further there is something that could be a potential issue in a future relationship. Now you have to talk with your partner and decide if a future is possible between both or you based on the knowledge you hold and would have to respect for the rest of your life. If that is not possible then you have to make a choice. Never encourage your partner to change his views, which will never work. You however must respect that this is his view on the topic and respect that if you have children both parents will have different influences on your children, how much will that be of an issue for you? <em>edited by Lolacat on 14/01/2015</em>

I need to clear my mind of a woman's worth and value, as my perception is very different to many women I see. Mine is very old. edited by EmmaRitz on 13/01/2015 Your value is being there for your children and family, you are irreplaceable, your children love you unconditionally without perceptions of worth. Your value should never be underestimated or allowed to be swayed by others. You are a very special lady. ;)

Bingo I’m so sorry that the baby is going through this and I understand everyone is trying to help the little one, BUT, really all anyone can do is advise that the family take the child to a really good GP or Paediatrician who can advise and refer if necessary. Dr Fisher is often recommended for a paediatrician here and GP wise, Dr Carol Smiley at Mirdif or Dr Saima Sheikh at Motor City. Maybe some other posters will be able to also recommend Dr for you. http://www.medicentres.ae/doctors.html http://healthbayclinic.com/dr-carol-smylie.html

The cost of living has gone up everywhere. Its more noticeable in Dubai because so many had it good for a long time when companies paid out for housing, schools etc now companies have stopped the benefits wages have not increased to cover the rise in living costs, but that is the case everywhere int just here. Some people in the UK have not seen a pay rise for years. [b'>And you think people have here? [/b'> Childcare, petrol and food are very expensive in the UK and far less in Dubai so if you "want/need" to work its a better place to be. [b'>No comparison to costs here, your data is incorrect.[/b'> Dubai is now a first world country ......and that comes at a price.

Parent then supervises homework and reading."[/b'> You are supposing that a well paid job is an option open to all! But many don't have one that pays for the luxury like you to employ a driver, a maid and a tutor, and telling them to go get a better paid job is like Queen Antoinette telling people who could not find bread "to just eat cake"! But that is her point. You should not think of the western expat life concept as an entitlement. Learn to accept that if yo do not have a high ranking, well paid job, there's a good chance yo cannot have these things. And simply be happy ith what yo do have. ER that is not her point at all.

LC - you understand perfectly what is meant by a western expat life - you are being intentionally argumentative. If you have already worked 20 years and got to top of your career, bravo, you will have good pension and savings so would not be concerned to much about cost of living. If you have a well paid job you can afford to use driver service to pick your kids up from school, parent does drop off, maid looks after children for 3 hrs in afternoon till patent gets home. Parent then supervises homework and reading. I reiterate - if you are concerned about cost of living and lack of savings look to your earnings and if there is a second person in the marriage not working for financial or limited gain, rethink this. Otherwise for heaven sake except your financial situation and lack of savings for rainy day or old age. Answer your statements. You said Western expat life, what exactly is that? You said no need to employ third world uneducated child minders, yet here that is exactly what you have said to do, so you don't have the answer. Which tackles it back to the nitty gritty, cost. You now suggest employing a maid and a driver. Do you have any idea how much that costs, also factoring you need a bigger house to accommodate them, another car, insurance, annual visa fees etc. At the end of the day someone else is responsible and bringing up your kids! Then you get home from a 12 hour day, because to have a job that pays enough to cover all those costs and make enough money post costs your children are asleep in bed or far to tried to be doing homework. Any jobs that pays well enough will expect hours to be put in, weekends, evenings and for many travel. Well paid jobs for spouses are hard to come by as you become a local hire and it comes back to many companies can recruit far cheaper from the East than the West without the complications of employing someone who has children. And guess what at the end of the day your children are being brought up by someone else. Some may have to do that, others would rather not. Many mums look for jobs that fit in with school hours, this works for many but does not pay enough to have drivers and maids. <em>edited by Lolacat on 13/01/2015</em>

I see your point. And the point is correct. That for many it is a choice. They chose to stay with their children. And that is a good choice. So be happy that you have the ability to make that choice rather than bitter because the savings is not what it once was. Life, in general, internationally, is more expensive now. There are some women who do not have that option and HAVE to work so their kids will eat. And women in that position in the west are the majority these days whereas here, with high rents and school fees, more women are still able to have the choice of no savings or a whole salary by getting a maid. And then the other point made was to those who HAVE to work (increasing numbers these days), do not give up and accept that the easiest job to get is the end of yor career path. Sure, you THOUGHT you were going to be a SAHM so didn't focus on a career but it is never too late to aim for a better one. Accept that your life now includes a full time job and rather than accepting the basic one, aim high, become a career woman. Is that what you are saying? edited by EmmaRitz on 13/01/2015 You see her point or are asking her to explain her point? Really?

The point of my post is about choice, if you choose to stay home, great but do not be surprised about cost of living or lack or savings. Also do not assume that working mums handover their child are to an uneducated third world national - that makes me cranky. Fact - if you rely on a single income in DXB you will struggle to live a western expat life, and you will make minimal savings. No point bemoaning it that is how it is, if it bothers you then you need a second decent income. The cost of living is rising end of. What is a western expat life? So who else are these mums handing their children over to? Who is picking their children up from school and driving them around? Who is looking after them during days off school, holidays and when they are sick? Isn't one of the very points about moving to expat life a better life where both parents don't have to flog their guts out all the time? Your facts are rubbish. And by the way many women have already worked 20 plus years and reached the top of their careers.

Sorry, I missed a zero out! It was meAnt to read 300, 000 dirhams a year! That is a very good allowance for housing, however I would suggest you find out how that is being paid. If it is direct to the Landlords I would suggest you see if you can get that paid in one sum to you so you can make that money go much further. Electric, water and housing fees need to be paid monthly and a house of that rental value will easily eat up 3K aed a month if not more, this can be quite a lot of money over a year that with some savvy planning you could incorporate into your total housing allowance. You take a cheaper house and use the rest of the money for other things. I would suggest you look at schools first and then find housing near the school or near bus routes. Schools, look at DESC/DESS, Jess AR, Nord Anglia if you wish to be near Arabian Ranches area. Nord Anglia is possibly your best choice to get both into.

If you want to save good money whilst in Dubai, watch your outgoings, and have two incomes - and not a non existent TA salary, get a well paid second job. For child care use your maid and use your evenings / weekends wisely for homework and reading support. So many western women come over here and just stop working - you wouldn't do that in your home country, unless very wealthy, so why on earth would you do it here and still expect to save. Fine not to work and and put your priorities elsewhere but don't complain about lack of savings and life getting more expensive. Majority of countries in 'developed' societies rely on two wages coming in for people to attain the material life they want and save for the level of comfort they want in old age. Ladies - step up, re start your career with some proper personal and monetary ambition. Has it occurred to you that some mothers don't want their children brought up by uneducated third world nationals, that they did not have children to have someone else bring them up? Your post shows you have very little comprehension of the job market for mums with children. Your post is insulting to say the least.

Everyone's reasons for staying or going are different, financial/family circumstances aren't the same for anyone. And not everyone is here for the same reason, so there is no wrong or right really. I do agree that there are many ways that you can cut down costs. You don'y need to eat in hotels to eat well, you don't have to buy over priced imported food products to eat well. It depends on where you want to live, what car you want to drive, how often you want to go out/do paid activities. I appreciate that for people with school going children it can be hard with school fees increasing, but hopefully with more new schools opening, families might have more options to choose from. And hopefully, eventually (being optimistic here) fees might have to come down. Like rents. Maybe. Ever. The new schools are coming in with higher fees as they are fixed for three years! Fees raise in most schools as your children move up year groups! Rents need to come down and be restricted from rising so more spend their disposable income on spending in the economy.

It's the same - he's doing the same job.. You said "We still have a package but if we didn't I think my husbands salary would be more". Yes, it probably would be, but it almost certainly would NOT be as high as the value of his current salary plus whatever your housing and school allowances are. As I said, the whole reason companies are removing benefits like fully-paid housing and school fees is to save money - it's a MASSIVE drag on a company's cashflow to have to pay out per-employee lump sums for rent and education. So say your DH currently gets 50k salary + 200k housing (paid in full by the company in one lump sum) + 150k school fees. That's a total value of 79,166k per month. But if your company decided that it wanted to save money by removing the benefits and just giving you a monthly all-in salary and making it your responsibility to get enough money together to pay your rent in one cheque, it wouldn't pay you 79,166k per month, because they wouldn't be saving any money. More likely, you'd get something on the region of 75% of that 79,166k as monthly salary, which would be 59,374k. it's a forum so I can make any comment I choose Sure you can, but I always find that thinking before making a comment is a good policy ;) Do you ? I hadn't noticed... 200 k housing ??? hahaha...I wish... The company wouldn't remove our benefits since it was their decision to send us here - if they want to save money they simply send us home !! What I actually meant was different jobs, as in, people who don't get full packages may well have a higher salary than those who do, so it's as broad as it's long... DT, I'm sorry but Velledoodah is correct in an awful lot of what she writes, packages are changing and it's not as broad as it is long, those days for the majority are long gone. All companies worldwide are tightening belts, it's a global financial downturn. Financially for a company it is easier to offer one salary and let the employee work out schools and living expenses.

Why would I want to eat cheap food from questionable sources, why would I want to inflict that on my children? Inflation has been steadily rising so it’s statistically documented that costs are rising across the board, it’s not peoples' imagination. Schools keep raising their fees, rents keep rising yet salaries stay the same, it does not take a rocket scientist to work out the gap closes or goes the other way. There is no way the cost of living is the same here as it is in Europe. I know many that are leaving and have left, mainly for educational reasons and the cost of living/schools being a big factor. I don't like having a pop but being married to a local does not have the same financial implications regarding costs.

No preference is given to UK PP holders at any school in Dubai anymore, it is purely on entrance criteria. Support your applications with extra information on strengths, such as the arts, sporting and music. DC is highly sought after as is DESC, but there is always a chance, so don't give up. EC and DBS secondary are good and get some good/excellent results. Jess Ranches is also worth looking at and JC. <em>edited by Lolacat on 08/01/2015</em>

Because the risk was lower when we were younger brought up in countries where TB was almost eradicated. Some research http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8613331

My grandfather's brother died from tetanus so he also felt it selfish to not immunize, Lolacat. He asked that one promise of us, that we immunize, as he was 8 when his brother, 12, died after having stepped on a rusty nail. That is so sad and so preventable, but maybe not in those days? Really awful way to die, agony. This whole thing is very much a privilaged western thing, these people who choose not to vaccinate should see first hand children dying or losing their limbs from preventable diseases before they are allowed to make that choice. I can see in years to come that children will be sueing parents who failed to vaccinate them. <em>edited by Lolacat on 06/01/2015</em>

All children should be vaccinated to attend schools in my book (unless they medically can not) and it should be mandatory, quite simple. As for not vaccinating untill older, just take a look at the damage Meningitis does to toddlers and babies, let alone polo!
