Family reasons are [b'>definately [/b'>the biggest reason for considering going home (especially when you have an evil DH's ex who point blank refuses to allow the LO's (9 & 12) to visit us here.....but that's another story, 4 months notice she had of the dates we were home for the past 2 weeks and she gave us a 6hr window to see the kids - FUME!!!, as I said another story and one day I'll start a thread on this top asking for advice as it totally infuriates me!!!). But family aside, financials are the definate pull here. We live fairly frugally in a reasonable 2 bed apartment, we cook at home, we don't splash on brunches or bling.....and we save what we would pay in UK tax......back home I was lucky if I had £20 left in my bank account at the end of the month!! If you are in a reasonable job and play your cards right DXB is a nice lifestyle ..... although I do miss greenery and frosty sunny mornings and I will spend my time here working towards an even nicer life in the future ..... Edited to clarify my DH isn't evil ..... but his ex is ;-) edited by Loopy Lotti on 08/09/2011

And how much help will a British family get here if the sole earner loses his job? Returning to the UK may be far from ideal, but with little money and no income it's the lesser of two evils. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 08/09/2011 I agree Sanddy ...... Being devils advocate I could list a zillion reasons for [i'>staying [/i'> here having just spent 2 weeks back in the UK for the obligatory family visit ..... but DH & I are both lucky enough to be debt free and in reasonably well paid jobs here, which is more than we could hope for back home.

I'm also a recent Shop n Ship recruit ....love OP's walk of shame & I've swiftly just had no less than 4 pairs of shoes delivered purchased via UK eBay (all within a week of purchase) ......... eeek, it's a little tooooo easy for someone like me who hates trawling the malls!!! I think the Cobone offer has expired but be aware that if you pay the 35 USD joining fee using Mastercard they offer an automatic 50% discount. I was very pleasantly surprised and hooked from that moment on!! :P

Go to the cinema and treat yourselves to the luxury Platinum Suite seats at Dubai Mall cinema. Sooooooo luxurious and you don't 'have' to eat!!! 120 AED per seat, but well worth it for a first class movie viewing experience!!

Oh dont get me wrong .... 100k in AED is a lot for me! too! :) And just about enough to talk seriously about opening an offshore .....or transferring to the UK and running the peril of the UK tax man!!! Thing is ..I'm so not sure of what I can and can't do re transferring money home without penalty (I have an accountant currently trying to sort out my past 3 yrs tax returns so am holding off bombarding him with what to do with my savings right now!!) .....but getting it out of the UAE is becoming priority!

There was something else re armpit sweating on here recently, I didnt reply at the time but now I will (not that it's likely to be any help unless you go to an understanding GP). As a teenager I had dreadful sweat problems (in very chilly UK!), mainly down to puberty, hormones combined with general teeenage anxiety. I for the life of me cannot remember the solution the GP prescribed but this was 25 yrs ago so I'm sure there is something as good available now, albeit you'll prolly need a quick visit to a GP to find out! It was a mini roller ball deoderant type thing, it was hard core and a bit stingy if applied too much ...... I think it worked on the principal of 'blocking' overactive sweat pores and you certainly didnt want to use too much of it, but little and often cleared up the problem within weeks. Not sure that helps any at all...but surely gotta be a better option than searching for 'armpit pads'??

Apt thread for me ..... OP doesnt state whether the 100k is sterling, dollars or dirhams, although if a HUGE amount then I'd guess sterling!!! I have a more modest amount to make the most of and due to wedding and mid name change am unable for the next few forseeable months to open any offshore account (I have nothing to prove my name right now!!). My question is, just how much can I transfer to my UK savings bank account without attracting the UK tax mans notice??? It was absolutely lovely and really luxurious, but it was definitely a pushing the boat out thing for us, on our twentieth wedding anniversary. Not something we'd do every year.. ETA: Am now saving up for Zighy Bay for the 25th anniversary ;) edited by simpleasabc on 26/07/2011 I love Bab Al Shams! Hey, hoping there may be someone BA savvie here that can advise? Have spent years collecting 100k points flying mostly long haul economy, now figure with 100k points in hand we can for once (ie the FIRST TIME EVER) upgrade our flights!! But no, BA site will not allow. My first question to any that may know, is... approx, how many points are required to upgrade from BA World Traveller Plus to Club? Second question is: why does the BA site simply send me an error message when trying to upgrade our flights?? If BA told me I don’t have enough points then fair enough .. but no, just a plain old error message asking me to go back to my original booking. I will call them over the weekend, but just wonder if there is something really simple that I am missing in terms of upgrades!! ??

I recently had my dress made by Pelins Tailoring, copied from a few pictures of a design I liked. It turned out beautifully and Pelin's attention to detail is absolutely second to none. She sourced all fabric samples then purchased the fabrics etc. Had quite a few fittings but that was partly as I kept wanting the train shortened and she is an absolute perfectionist in terms of fitting. Cannot recommend highly enough. [email protected] 050 165 6598 She's based in Meena Bazar which is just a little bit over from Satwa.

No Catholic British priest in Dubai - the closest is Italian, at the Jebel Ali church. We ended up getting married at Christchurch (Anglican) who has a British unconvencional priest - all the guests, including our Muslim friends - loved him cos he made he ceremony quite light and fun. i second this... the priest at Christchurch is awesome!! he gave such an unforgettable meaningful yet hilarious message for the weddding :) luved him! ^^^^ ditto that!!! Congrats anum!!! Not sure what type of ceremony your looking for but for us we recently had our ceremony at Jebel Ali church then held our reception at The Jetty Bar @ The Royal Mirage One & Only for 30 guests. The Jetty Bar was wonderful, it's small & intimate with lovely decor, opens out onto a beautiful furnished deck area on the beach. We had our own area (the side bar) coordined off and it was perfect for our small crowd. I think we paid 160 AED per head for a 3 hr drinks package but they do food packages as well. HTH

There's always Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain at 4,000 ft up...... defo cooler and seriously close by. We visited on a drive out of town in January this year and it was bl*ody freezing......14 degrees!!! But, heard it's a nice place to go in summer as it's much cooler being one of the highest places in the UAE. Might be good for a long weekend if you don't find somewhere further afield to abate the summer temps for a couple of days.

OK, OK I confess!. We paid the amount that had been billed to us and left rather swiftly. I do feel very guilty now though and i'm sure the saying 'what goes around, comes around' will soon hit me with avengance. I have to admit for the sake of 50 dhs if in the UK and especially if a chain type place I would have done the same. Here though I feel for the workers cashing up at the end of their shift and realising how much they might be down. Going back might prove to be v complicated to explain ............ I'd say just go honest if it happens again & maybe karma will look kindly on you :-)

Heard wonderful things re the Brick Lane Indian (ie British authentic Indian based in Al Barsha) Phoned them first to check they deliver our way, "Oh yes sir we do" So we get off the phone to choose our menu via their very good and comprehensive web site......... call them back to order mega excited re the authentic British indian menu ..... to be told, "No sir, we don't deliver that way" ....arrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!! Even offered them 20 to 30 dhs to deliver, sorry sir, will put our driver on the road for 30 mins (ie 15mins here then 15mins back)......."Sorry sir, no can do" :-( Needless to say, gutted, very hungry with no decent Indian delivery options, soup n toast it is then :-(

have faith - when i renewed my passport it also didn't co-ordinate with my egate card - a lovely local man on the egate desk pressed a few buttons, winked at me (no word of a lie) and sorted it all for me, free of charge :) i am hoping for the same guy at the airport next week! LOL - I agree the guys at the control point are lovely and try to help. In & out they both mentioned they think my prob is I have an Abu Dhabi visa now ..... Is it true they're only valid as long as your res visa is? this is true. i've just renewed my residency visa and it's rendered my e-gate card null and void. i'll have to pay to renew it at the airport next week when i travel. extra annoying as i only renewed the card a few months ago! some employers will pay for the new card for you. mine don't :( This is what I figured, null n void with a new visa, new passport on top which is why I made extra time to visit the desk at the airport. Still astounds me that no less than 3 officials couldnt rectify the problem, separate me from some cash in order to rectify and I now need to pay another visit to one of the offices to see what can be done. I have little faith that unless I part with some cash and stumble across an official that actually seems to know what they're talking about I shall for ever more be access denied at the control point ....in which case I shall deploy LMAO-DXB's eyelash fluttering tactic ;-) edited by Loopy Lotti on 12/07/2011

I would have asked for the correct bill. It's only 50Dhs after all. So come on - fess up, what did YOU do? LoL ....yes, so what did you do???? I would have pointed it out, asked for the correct bill etc, guilty conscience n all. My Dad once found a wallet in the street with over £600 cash in it (this was 20 years ago!!!). Handed into the local plod station and a week later received a thank you card with £50 cash enclosed. Turned out it was an old couples entire months holiday spending money. Now that's a nice feeling having done the right thing. When seeing the thread title my first thought was the good old honesty box, remember those?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honesty_box

I've just finished 'The Lost Daughter' by Dianne Chamberlain which I thoroughly enjoyed.......an easy read but gripping and thought provoking. Product Description An unsolved murder. A missing child. A lifetime of deception. In 1977, pregnant Genevieve Russell disappeared. Twenty years later, her remains are discovered and Timothy Gleason is charged with murder. But there is no sign of the unborn child. CeeCee Wilkes knows how Genevieve Russell died, because she was there. And she also knows what happened to the missing infant, because two decades ago she made the devastating choice to raise the baby as her own. Now Timothy Gleason is facing the death penalty, and she has another choice to make. Tell the truth and destroy her family. Or let an innocent man die to protect a lifetime of lies...

Ladies, thank you so much for your replies .....gives me much more to research :-) Love the houseboat idea!!! Sadly, DH is not keen on the idea and is now saying if we have time over Xmas we should go home. Errrrr NO, we went home last Xmas, then again in March (sadly unexpected for his fathers funeral), we're going next month for the annual summer visit ...... that's 3 times in a 12 mth period and enough in my book. Sorry, I am of no help re the below questions. I'm having so much fun with my e-gate card I'm not sure whether to post on this thread or the 'Overheard at Mc D's' thread!! Since last using it successfully at the end of last year, I have changed visa's (new job, so now have an Abu Dhabi visa), and then on top of that have a renewed passport. So, I have, a new visa in an expired passport + new passport + old e-gate card. Thought it might take some time to sort out so left buckets of time when we flew last month and visited the desk at the airport. Chap taps on his keyboard for 5 mins and hands all back to me saying, all is fine, proceed to e-gate / passport control. Get to e-gate control, access denied. I explain all to chap at the control point (ie that I HAD bothered to visit the previous desk to sort out card vs new visa, passport etc and enquired what needed to be done to my card to make sure it worked), chap at control taps on his keyboard for 5 mins and says, all is fine, system just not updated yet, you'll be fine on the way back in. 10 days later we land back at DXB (with our honeymoon glow), and smugly bypass the passport queues for e-gate control. Access denied :-( Chap taps on his keyboard for 10 mins, looks confused, taps for a few more mins, then asks if I have an Abu Dhabi visa ..... errrrr yes, as it states in my passport...... I then try to explain again re old passport + new visa + new passport + I had seen 2 e-gate officials 10 days ago who said my e-gate card would be fine ...... he looked confused, mentioned something about the fact I now have an AD visa, and my egate card is registered with my old passport and to visit one of the other e-gate offices to get it sorted. Arrrggghhhh!!! Not got round to it yet, can't bare the pain, but we fly again next month so I need to gather my patience and go ...... wonder if I'll get through control next time or whether I'll still be access denied!!! Sorry for the rant!! The thread brought it all back to me! NORMALLY, e-gate is a wonderful card, and yes, I hear that one day, they'll integrate it with the national ID card which will be nice in terms of not having to have quite so many slots in ones purse!

We're considering Kerala for Xmas as it's just a short hop away ......but where to start in terms of accomodation? We're rather spoilt with 5* luxury but the more I delve into Trip Advisor the more smaller boutique chic type of properties are coming to my attention, at prices that are also V appealing!! Whilst many of them are quite clear no AC, no hot water (NOT for us), but some of these places do look rather lovely in a rustic kind of way. That said I do not want to spend our Xmas with deli belly! Do any of you have any advice or recommendations of where's lovely to stay in Kerala, boutique rustic (but with AC & hot water :)), through to 5* oppulance? Ideally looking for a beach location, although some of the lake locations look nice .... Any recommendations or experiences shared most appreciated! TIA ladies.
