I may have been mistaken, but I thought I saw one on Petunia Lane (GCW, DIP) for sale.......right near the start of the lane on the left I assume you have considered asking those up for rent if they wish to sell?

Hi The Head of Seniors left after his 2 year contract ended, for a headmaster role in Washington DC, their term starts June. A replacement has been appointed and is serving already in the school. The Head of Juniors replacement has been appointed and starts in September. Not heard about any other head leaving, but my kids mentioned the Head of Prep maybe leaving but he has been at the school for years. There is an overall Head of School, the Headmaster. The school is big, but no bigger than other BC schools overseas. It manages the size by breaking the school down into Nursery, Infant, Pre-prep, prep and Seniors. This is better organisation than other big schools we have put our children into, and the system works well. Repton was the only school who could offer all my kids places last year which is why we are there. It has capacity to accept more students in Seniors, and is managing to accommodate the large year groups coming through from Juniors. It is a gamble, any school choice, and if you are not happy with your choice here you can only move your child to start a new school in Term 2. Term 3 there are no moves for students already resident in Dubai. Good Luck, we are happy with Repton so far! <em>edited by loube on 17/05/2012</em>

the standard acceptable clothing in the gulf in General (not talking about Saudi, Qatar etc) is: Nothing above the knee Shoulders covered No low cut tops to expose cleavage Nothing see through or tight fitting this is pretty straight forward in my opinion A pretty summer dress with short sleeves and a hem to the knee worn with flip flops is fine...and hardly a bind to wear. No its not if you’re over 40 but what about everyone under 40 who wants to look young and trendy. Clearly you're not aware that maxi-dresses are IN. People can look young and trendy without flashing the flesh. Maxi dresses are so not IN sorry you are 2 years out. Maxi dresses look like tents IMO, I hate them

if they dont want people wearing revealing clothes then why have them in shop windows and sell them in the shops, and please dont say just to wear at home. i do agree though that the bits of thread that some people venture to the malls in you dont see in the uk even in the summer, people dont walk around tescos in see through barely there clothes - not where i come from anyway. what about men and the dress code, i for one cant stand seeing men in those up the b*m short shorts, skinny barely there vest tops with everthing hanging out - they are sitting all over the seats in the cafes and restaurants in their sweaty skin, yuk. i think the longer you live here the more you appreciate certain things arent shoved in your face, but i have only ever experienced one local lady going crazy in mirdiff city centre last year - this is in the 9 years i have lived here. ps why are the notices on the doors to malls only in english and arabic, wheres the russian etc. as well. pps why arent people informed before they travel here, once they are here they are here its a bit late then in my opinion if you've only brought your thong and bikini top for your fortnight.! edited by fairwater on 14/05/2012;) edited by fairwater on 14/05/2012 I agree with the store clothing thing...M&S was full of see through blouses last time I went and nothing long sleeve!

Let's put another spin on this debate. Those that should wear the full gear....that by which their religion dictates they should wear all the time and not be allowed to slip into western dress, I do think if those that are complaining about the dress code of some people followed their own dress code strictly then there would be a good example to follow. I have read on EW that men sometimes wear western dress rather than the full white robes and head dress... <em>edited by loube on 14/05/2012</em>

aah. the moon sighting.....keeps people on the edge of their seats I do not know why it cannot be predicted to within 12 hours, my iPad app manages to do so every day of year, that is predict the phase of the moon correctly...for the man in the desert interior at the camel farm of course perhaps he does not have the benefit of technology but years of observing the nights sky, and sailors managed so why do we need to wait for the word of someone, or an announcement Today is the last quarter (49%) tomorrow is the waxing crescent (42%)

The East is on the same piece of land as Marriott, the West is across the road...anyhow both are very nice. We live on East and are moving to West shortly (just cause we want the private pool). East is greener as it is older therefore more established, but IMO the villas are better design in the West than the East, but some say slightly smaller as a result. I think the villas in the East have a lot of wasted space compared to the West. Townhouse I would imagine is similar story. Park n shop is opening in Sept, we have choitrams and spinneys in the vicinity, more shops will be opening in the mall soon. the only thing missing is a dentist. altho I have been told there is one in the clinic. Thriving Ladies group, with functions breakfasts etc being held in the Marriott, and I think there is a quiz night at the Premier Inn, and probably a few other things which you will find out about if you move here. Good Luck! We love it here and do not want to move away! IBN Battuta only 6 km drive away..and Dubai Marina 15 mins <em>edited by loube on 13/05/2012</em>

mine is coming tomorrow, DH has his. You can set the same pin number for all the FOBS....we have a total of 12 fobs for various HSBC accounts, they need to supply a giant keyring to store them all on. they do work anywhere in the world, battery expired on HSBC UK business one a few years back, I just contacted them via phone banking and they despatched a new one...it took about 3 working days to come all the way to Bangkok really no hassle to use, except the UAE one requires you to push a different part of the keypad (top right) to get the random number rather than bottom right for all the others I have. We mark our initials in metallic marker on the reverse so we know whose is whose I do not know whether this is better than a password, or a key fob that you press for the random number, that is without previously entering a pin number (this is what some of our accounts have)

[i'>"A paid annual leave of 14 days, with any other holidays or days of absence from work on account of sickness reckoned as part of the annual leave, if such holidays fall within it. The annual leave can be carried forward to the following year and the employer has to grant a return ticket to the worker to travel home every two years. Payment for the annual leave and the travel allowance can be paid in cash to the worker who opts not to travel home." [/i'> I thought maids get a month off every year, does this mean they are taking away 2 weeks per year and adding them onto the sick leave below? [i'>"A domestic worker shall enjoy sick leave of up to 30 days a year and such leave shall be calculated as follows: the first 15 days with full pay, while the next 15 days will be without pay".[/i'> Had to laugh at the word 'enjoy' in this paragraph. edited by Alismum on 02/05/2012 In the newspaper edition it said that the 14 days could be carried on to the next year (year 2 of the contract), and that an employer is only obliged to buy a ticket home once every 2 years...so hire your helper, and release her 1 month shy of 2 years with her ticket home, either for good or for a 4 weeks holiday and return to a 2 year contract renewal. Bonus only paid for completing contract. All the changes sound completely fair and a much more reasonable compromise between the generous deals offered by some and the downright stingy deals offered by others... Sick pay paid for 15 days, and unpaid for the next 15 days, and breach of contract if no work after 30 days, sounds fair too...it is to stop those in year 1 of their 2 year contract trying to get a paid leave under the guise of being sick

Ha ha Sandy Dogg- no, H**C is not a swear word (although some would beg to differ... )- just gotta be careful of the slander thing . Thanks for all of your replies. It is only the Dubai Lloyds branches that are being sold (they will keep a Lloyds offshore branch somewhere in Dubai- to be determined). Mostly I am concerned about safety- money not disappearing from our account, also ability to online bank safely (and transfer money offshore online) and also Lloyds was good at calling when our Visa card was being used for big purchases etc to make sure it hadnt been stolen. Anyone else vote for Emirates NBD? Anyone had money disappear out of their account with Emirates NBD ? (a problem with H**C for a number of people I know over the last 3 years). It would be a lot easier just to stay with H**C as LLoyds will take care of the transition, but it just seems to have such a bad rep. H**C have just introduced a secure key here in UAE, which means a pin number is randomly generated for each online transaction involving movement of money...I have never had any problems with them but our branch is at JAFZA, but then I have fobs for all accounts now, and I need a new keyring (maybe they should produce a promo one to hold all the fobs!!)

it is nearly 9 years (next week) since I had my third and last child, and often I consider going back to work...I would love to, but somehow something always holds me back, I think it is the school holidays to be frank. So if you are going to return to work I would do it BEFORE your kids start school and that way you will not have to make a very hard choice based on them, as you will be out of their day to day the moment you start work, and not only once they have gone off to school and left you at home.... What is the profession, BTW?

CelMetro was recommended to me by the ladies on here and they were great, it was 585 for an ipad 2 screen with a genuine apple screen and a 2 year guarantee. They had a cheaper option for the 'fake' screen but it only came with a 1 month guarantee and wasn't much cheaper. They also picked it up and dropped it off for free but I think they are in JLT. The number is 044541416, hth Hi, thanks for posting about this, I am going to get my kid s iPads repaired this afternoon, it says 535 on the website but I assume 585 is for the OEM part, and 2 year warranty is great...

Ladies, My DD is 7 months today ......... she has never been one of the babies who you can 'put down awake' .... Somehow I have managed with walking her, pacifier, feeding her, stroller .... different things worked during different phases. There was a brief time she could put herself to sleep by sucking her thumb/fingers but she stopped that and she refuses the pacifier now so I have basically been nursing her to sleep. I went through a nightmare phase between 3.5-5 months where she would wake several times a night. Anyway I did CIO (which is totally against my principles as a Mother but I didnt know what else to do). Long story short - her sleep at night is much improved and she goes to sleep after drinking a bottle of milk. If she wakes up and is just moaning then I ignore her and she goes back to sleep within a few minutes so she CAN go to sleep herself. I have a nanny - my nanny has started doing most of the naps unless she needs to be fed and she goes to sleep VERY easily with the nanny ie. a book then a bit of patting then she's asleep - no problem. It is FIRDAY - I have to deal with naps and she WILL NOT sleep for me no matter what I try (but I am not feeding her as that is what she wants). What the **** do I do????? My own DD will not nap with me ?????? Even if I am lying with her in the bed she just cries and cries and cries and the second I remove her from the room she is totally fine so there is nothing bothering her. I know if I fed her she'd be asleep in a second. My husband is also trying now and she is screaming ****** murder!!! I feel such a failure .......... Do I give in and feed her every time or what??? I am at a total loss. It sounds like she is attached to the smell of your Nanny, perhaps your nanny could leave an item of her clothing with you on her day off, and you could wrap baby in it, 11 am is usually a common feeding time, she maybe growing and need an early lunch, you must be weaning her, so give lunch!!! <em>edited by loube on 27/04/2012</em>

MrsOrchid Save yourself the fee. All the info is on the HMRC website, you probably just need to write a letter to HMRC your local tax office, explaining why you are not liable and give proof of the purchase dates and sale dates for your property, and proof of how long you have not been resident for. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/faqs_capgains.htm Good Luck!! <em>edited by loube on 27/04/2012</em>

Thank you ladies! Baby will be about 8 weeks when we get there, so I'm not to baby food for a while, but I have intentions of making my own - we'll see if that happens. I was wondering about storage bags for expressed milk. I thought they might be hard to find. I'll be sure to stock up! I'll be sure to bring the items listed below. And I was planning to bring our changing pad (we even bought a changing table here we're taking back cause we didn't like anything when we were looking in doha!) BUt what is special about the IKEA high chair? We have a high chair in Doha that I think looks pretty good.... The one thing I am most curious about is whether nipple shields are available. (small piece of silicone that goes over the nipple when breastfeeding). Baby had trouble latching initially and we are now dependent on them. I bought quite a few extras thinking they'll be impossible to find, but if anyone knows if they're available, it would be great. for making your own babyfood purees you may want to invest in a mouli (baby mouli) for making super smooth purees, without seeds/skins....as well as the obvious, a blender. I loved making baby purees, and putting them into the ice cubes tray....and then turning them out 1 cube, or two cubes for baby dinner....miss those days, now it is nearly three extra adult meals at each mealtime!!!! My DS3 had a passion for spinach and cheese puree, and it made the most fabulous green coloured gloop which he used to gobble right up in no time!! <em>edited by loube on 24/04/2012</em>

I'm sure I'll sound stupid- but what are nappy sacks? Are they just trash bags for diapers? Are hypoallergenic baby wipes hard to find in Doha or just expensive. My husband wanted to bring wipes back from the US, but i thought he was crazy! And with the ergo carrier- when did you start using yours? We got the infant insert, but baby does not like it at all. I'm hoping he'll like it when he's a little bigger. Sometimes he likes the sling. For breast pumps- the one I have is 110 voltage or battery operated, so I have been thinking I might need to get another in Doha if mine dies. They are available, right??? It's just the replacement part that are hard to get? nappy sacks, but they are scented, and hold one or two soiled nappies only which is great when you are out and about. Not environmentally friendly tho!

Here's the part I don't understand- if someone I care about needs help you just do it... You don't question, you don't resent them, and they most definitely do not owe you.. I suppose in a way I am afraid I will turn out to be exactly like them when I have my own children... it took me a long time, and a lot of effort and pain to reach a point where I was able to run my own life. And I can tell you what it is a sweet feeling, making your own decisions. I would do anything I needed to for the people I love.. but does it just make me a sucker? And believe me, when it comes to my mother, you don't even want to know! Thanks for the advice ladies... I somtimes find it hard to know what is acceptable to put up with, and sometimes need help trusting my own judgement.. TIA :) I have to say that this may not be your parent talking, it could be the voice of the new partner/husband/wife, you need to get to the bottom of that somehow

I am having these issues with both my parents, without going into too much details. The parent who did not raise me beyond age 4 has not seen me grow into an adult, but respects me and we now get on well, but not as mother-child but as good friends. She never lectures me or tells me how to raise my kids (how could she?) It has taken her 8 years to understand about my life and me and realise that I have grown up and in Jan this was the first time she came out to visit me and family overseas, it was great! My father on the other hand I have issues with now and more and more as time goes on as I am seeing him for the adult he is. He raised me and treats me like a child at times and is not so open about what he his feelings are behind situations. His last visit here we decided that the next visit has to be shorter or on neutral ground (family holiday somewhere else) He is good to my kids, but not really a parent to me, although I know he would help if I asked. He just cannot do the talking side of being a parent, just the action stuff. He admits that when he and my mum split he never expected he would look after us kids, he expected it to be my mother. The stepmother...is a different story and she should be hung, drawn and quartered for dumping 2 step kids she raised for over 15 years, just because we did not fit into her new life! I am determined to keep my family unit together and to for us all to be happy and appreciate each other for our differences. Who knows how things will pan out over time, but to be sure mu husband and I will always be there for our kids and as long as they know that, then if we have a rocky patch with one of them we hope that they will know this and in the long run it will not matter.

it is very annoying after a while, initially we were okay about it, and of course it be better not to stand in the way of the home owner, it is their property and they do have a right to sell it. Our rented house was sold last November, and between Sept and Oct we had many viewings, some coming back several times. It is NOT the tenants job to sell the house, however tenants often feel they must have their home clean and tidy for the viewings, I just did the first viewing with each agent and then thereafter let them show the house, but what annoyed me more than anything was the 'chat' prospectives wanted to have with us about the conditions of the TA. Anyway we have a new LL and they have been very attentive, but they are moving in this July so I expect that is why.

I buy naturaliser and clarks and M&S (wide fitting) if there is a pair that feel comfy (but my M&S shoes often squeak) Have tried on designer brands and they are too narrow for my chunks..such as Jimmy C Nine West for a night. I also like Geox (some styles) as they are very comfortable too and some good styles, would also check out Rockport as they have adidas neoprene padding in the soles and are very comfortable too (all stores to be found at DIFC shopping mall) . Toga in Ibn is quite good too.

Hi loube, just a quick note on the Child Benefit......I moved out of UK with my children 8 weeks ago today informing child benefit.....payments stopped with immediate effect from the date we left the uk with no entitled run on as we were not living in the UK after that date. I even queried we would officially be visitors for 30 days till our uae visas but were told no. Not sure if this is a new ruling since you were informed but we were told definatly no run on entitlement. Thx, I left UK in 2004 and at that time we had run on for I think 8 weeks or it may have been 12. So it must have changed, which is fair enough.

i did mine last year.......if you have the same uk address as your old licence....fill in the online form, give permission for them to use yor passport details.....sent your expired photo licence back and your new one will be sent to your UK address.:) but its illegal, and if caught you can get a 5k fine!!! stop telling people to do something that its illegal to do. as i said they are looking into these now in a lot more detail. Absolutely agree with you BB2 - DH's licence was lost when we moved from the UK, he has not requested another as it is ILLEGAL to do so, I have mine still (which is not valid) but do not use it. When and if we return to the UK we will simply apply for our licences and there will be no problem which I was told directly by the DVLA (no test to take as we have passed it in the UK many many years ago). What is it with British Citizens, of which I am one, wanting their cake and eating it - either you are resident in the UK and qualify for your UK licence or you are resident in the UAE and you do NOT qualify. .... don't get me started on British expats who are still claiming Child Benefit! I always use my UAE licence when I go back to UK, but the rental agencies are clueless really...and who is claiming child benefit??? That is def. illegal too, although there are a couple of months after you leave UK whereby you are entitled to have it.

this situation is so typical of the UK, so egocentric For UK nationals (British passport holders) I believe they should allow renewal of the photo card, as the paper part is still valid, as this assists obtaining driving licences in other countries. However you should not be able to use it to hire a car if you are not resident at the time of hire. For non UK nationals once you are no longer resident, you should surrender the licence at the local police station before you exit the country It could be so easy....but ah this is UK after all, and the concept of the Brit expat and the non national is still one they are failing to grasp after over half a century!! we need an MP who is willing to voice the views of the non resident Brit <em>edited by loube on 17/04/2012</em>

Whenever I have needed an iron supplement, I take FEFOL. Other than medications , Dark Green Leafy Vegetables are a good source of iron, with vitamin C for absorption. Never take iron supplements with milk. Hope its helpful!! and it is good to take them with freshly squeezed orange juice, as vitamin C aids absorption of iron into the bloodstream

[b'>However it remains that some people DO have the choice between paying Class 2 or 3 despite your situation, Loube, and it may be that Class 2 are cheaper. This is relevant to Mrs Orchid who asked the question. [/b'> From the link: What class of contribution to pay Voluntary Class 2: employed or self-employed abroad Provided the earlier conditions are met you can pay voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions if you are employed or self-employed abroad (but not if you are employed and already paying Class 1 contributions). In order to pay voluntary Class 2 contributions you must either have been: 'ordinarily' employed or self-employed immediately before you went abroad 'ordinarily' employed or self-employed but became unemployed immediately before you went abroad to work ('unemployed' means registered as unemployed with the Department for Work and Pensions and looking for work) Class 2 contributions have the following benefits: they count towards your State Pension when you retire they entitle you to the Employment and Support Allowance (previously known as Incapacity Benefit) and bereavement benefits when you return to the UK If you want to check whether you satisfy the conditions for paying voluntary Class 2 National Insurance contributions, contact National Insurance Contributions Office - International Caseworker. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/volcontr/abroad.htm edited by spongemonkey on 15/04/2012 she only asked if it was worth paying them, she did not say she was employed or self employed, so you could assume either way - if she is not working for a UK employer or self employed from Uk and therefore it will be £12+ per week if she is it will be £3 per week whether it is worth it, well there is a time limit for making catch up payments, and only the pension forecast will tell her if she qualifies to pay catch up for missing months

my view would be to say that UAE should make part timing legal, then expats would not need to pay such high wages (4k a month etc) to retain a live in maid all to themselves....that would stop the complaints along the lines of expats raising the market price for the locals, and everyone getting moans about those who do have part timer against others who follow the rules....a simple but practical solution and everyone benefits.
