I booked Ahlan for my parents (both in 70s) and it was the thing that impressed my dad the most for the entire holiday! He wouldn't stop talking about how good it was. Never used Merhaba so cannot compare, but my folks were sure happy with Ahlan. Have used both and would say Ahlan

Dubai College is regarded as the best secondary school but they pick the students they want. They pick you,you dont pick them. Lol! I know someone whose son was told to get a tutor by a teacher there when he asked for extra help.... DC is like a UK grammar school therefore it should get good results because, as you say they cream off the high attainers. But that does not necessarily make it the best - other schools do exceptionally well with the students they have. There are so many other factors - there is no one size fits all solution to picking a school for your child. If the child is academic, then DC, Jess Arabian Ranches or DESC are good options. In general non-profit schools would be my choice. Is it not difficult to get into Desc and Jess because of debenture and siblings placements?

Hi ladies! It seems that we'll be moving back home this summer! *dance dance* Does anyone know of any pediatricians/general doctors that have certification from the USA? I need to take my son to get his physical done for school registration and I think it has to be from someone licensed in the US. Also, what about moving companies? Any recommendations? I don't have furniture or bulky appliances or anything, just clothes and photos and stuff I'd rather take with me! Will it be worth it to use a moving company or someone to ship this stuff over? Or should I just pay the extra weight charges with the airline when we go? Thanks! Perhaps Google consultants in Dubai with USA certification I imagine there will be lots

Jim fix it Hitches and Glitches - they werent very clear on their costs Tooltime TIA My friend has used Jim Will Fix it, i know the owners personally however i find them expensive. I would think the 30 riyal rate is for someone with limited or little experience as a nanny per se as an expat would expect - more a maid who has child care experience (perhaps her own in her home country or a family here). One thing to be careful of NEmom is that the person you hire is legally allowed to work as a maid/nanny (that they are employed as such by an agency). Even local sponsors are not allowed to permit their sponsored employees to work for other people - and guess who gets fined if caught? Do lots of people hire illegal/grey area maids/nannies? Yes, but you need to be aware of the consequences. The only way that I know to hire a maid/nanny legally that YOU do not sponsor is through an agency. I know in Dubai the authorities often do sweeps through various residential neighbourhoods to "catch" the illegal maids (and their illegal employers). From what I understand, you have to be here at least 6 months before you can legally sponsor a maid/nanny yourself - which is a pain for most as the reason they want the help is because both parents are working. You also have to remember that if she is sponsored by another family and working for you part time apart from incuring a huge fine ( you pay) and her deportation if caught, you have no comeback if she steals/committs a crime against your family. She is not insured to look after your children either Not a chance any Mother would take with their children. It is best to hire through an agency

Hi, any labour law experts out there. There is a rumour going around that our company is looking to give a 10% salary cut across the work force, is this legal? When I googled it I got a few quotes from newspaper reports but can't actually find anything in the actual Labour Law. Does anyone know if this is true and if so can you point me in the right direction of clause in the labour law to look at or post a link quoting said rule. TIA edited by lal1 on 31/01/2013 I would call the MOL and ask. Best to get it straight from the horses mouth

I don't have high exceptions and I'm not talking about expensive many course meals in a five star hotel. In fact I would be happy with a red rose and box of chocolate too. And for those of you who asked why should I do something special for him: I am already planing something and thinking about a small, romantic gift for him. Valentine's day is a day but not just another day. It is a symbolic day that gives us an excuse to share our love with our loved ones and make them feel especial. Would you call Christmas, thanks giving and new year's day just another day?? If we think like that wouldn't all traditional dates will be just another day? Can we focus on my question now? ;) How can we tell you what to say? He is either the romantic type on this day and will surprise you or he won't. If you are that concerned tell him how you feel about this day and what you expect and personally i dont agree that thanksgiving, new years day or Xmas are remotely the same as Valentines day

Ladies, thank you so much for sharing your opinion! I will definitely will meet the teacher tomorrow and judging how the meeting goes I will see if I would need to take it further to the principal. It does make an impact on him - he is sitting crying today, telling that he does not want to go to school any more as the teacher said that he is like a girl :( Could never imaging a grown-up can be so mean to a kid of 5 years old, and that is a teacher. Will update you on the talk tomorrow. This post made me so sad, poor little one, give him a hug from me Let us know how you get on please.

It's not important what he does on Valentines Day (Which I think we can do well without lol) it's about how he treats you the rest of the year! And his behaviour and respect and love are more important than material things. Its the whole "men should do this" etc etc etc Women should step up if they want to do something Our office is like a florists on this day although the men do not send them any other time lol FB is inundated with all the braggers displaying what their DH and OP has done for them Sorry if i sound cynical as i am not :-)

If you have to hint at it or remind him, then what's the fun in that? Not much surprise if you tell someone what to do. In any case, you're adults, not teenagers, so it's kinda silly to be making an issue about this. Just my two cents. I agree and it is only a day... To me it matters how he treats me 365 days a year not just 1 made up day My sentiments about this day, too. It's just a day. The OP wants him to get creative and plan something. How about you plan something for him ? We fought for equality. Why should all the romance be up to the man, this is the 21st century :-)

I think goro's just trying to give a heads up to parents with LOs in Brit schools, that it could be theirs. I know teachers in US, IB and MoE schools whose students I've seen many photos of on FB pages during class, national day celebrations, outings... Unless the schools say 'no' then they'll do it. And with iPhones you can see photos live. The school needs to tell them not to, I mean actually tell them, not just '- known thing' as many teachers arrive from abroad and don't know these knowns. Even in the UK photos are not allowed. We used to be able to video my neice and nephews nativity now it is banned. Teachers should already be aware of this

I am a member of an arabic FB page, this page owned by a teacher in a British school in Dubai - this is her diaries as she describe it.... there were a post about she was in a field trip - I guess it was the aquarium but not sure tho - and tourists were taking photos of the school children as they find they look cute - her discreption in the post - and one child hides behind her avoiding the photographing.... then she asks him why? he reply to her: that someone could take his photo and post it over the internet....she tells him that is good, it will make him famous and say exactly her words: those people will say: isn't this Mohammed the boy we met in Dubai? then the little boy spring showing himself saying: make me famous, take photos of me!!!! I told the teacher that what she did is wrong, and she should know better that she violated these children rights by allowing strangers take these children photos...as God only know what are those people are really are...and she should approached the tourists and ask them to delete these photos nicely, if they resist she should tell the police to deal with them, and the police will help her to delete these photos.... she become sarcastic about my comments, and started saying we live in a safe community, and asking the tourists to delete the photos is weird! and thank god I am not a parent of child in her school!!! I did remind her that there is a paper part of the admission process to any child is the consent of the parents/guardian of taking photos of the children for the year book, and another section of advertising for the school; which I did not approve the later...only the year book and the class photos. After that, it made me think: is our children are really safe with their schools? saying they will go to school field trip with responsible adults, to discover these adults are not responsible at all?!!!! That made me think again: I am in the process to apply for my children in a british school that is literally across the street from our home, however; should I be afraid that that situation could happen to my children? I don't know.....your opinions ladies... I thought it was illegal to take photos of people without their knowledge and i wouldnt want a random stranger taking pics of me never mind my children and i am British. What does the nationality of the school have to do with it? I couldnt imagine any teacher regardless of their nationality should allow this. Where is the teacher from? All the teacher had to say is that is illegal in this part of the world to take pics of strangers. It certainly isn't a British thing i can assure you Why not complain to the head teacher? if you only recevied sarcastic comments from the teacher. My Neice and nephew were over here recently and they had people trying to touch them in the malls as they are blond haired and blue eyed. I told them politely to stop as my Neice and Nephew were scared and fyi the people touching them were not British nationals

Snap :) we are relocating from Doha too and looking at the marina side ,have been mooching for about two months now online and negotiating to " feel the water" and there are a lot of comparisons to be made. The marina residences look favourable too ,but feel they may be too far away from taxis etc ?? ,as I won't be driving ...... We just need two bed with a maids room and balcony for sitting on :) No shortage of taxis in the marina, they are everywhere JBR has construction in front of it at present due to the new tram stop I lived on the other side by the Yacht club in 2010 however moved as the traffic was too busy and new buildings were going up I found the nicer buildings were at the start of the Marina and Emaar properties who do amazing developments i think one of them are called Al Mas they are right on the walk by spinneys with a lovely view A good map to use is http://www.imexre.com/en/property_search/maps/dubai_marina.php Stay away from Dreams and the Diamond tower not very nice edited by louisedvs on 30/01/2013 edited by louisedvs on 30/01/2013

Hi Could anyone please recommend a computer expert, I am having issues trying to sync my iPhone and iPad after having transfered iTunes files from a desktop to a laptop. I'd really appreciate it if anyone knows anywhere I can take my laptop to have someone look at it or maybe someone I can call? I have tried PlugIns without any success and I am slowly going demented! Thanks in advance. Claire Have you opened the files and manually sent them all to i tunes? It is laborious but you have to click on each song individually and open with itunes Once they are all in i tunes plug in iphone and at the top of the i tunes page it says music, apps etc click that and you can check the box to sync all songs and playlists then click apply on the bottom right of the screen. I could help but i would need to see the laptop

Reading all these posts, I am wondering whether there is something wrong with my PT too. I train at Fitness First (FF) with her 3 times a week and am doing cardio on the other days so 7 days a week. Have really cut down and am checking my food habits but not once has the trainer asked me abt my food. I was actually upset the other day becoz at FF they give you a handbook which requiresyou to log in everything and I was handed that over by the person at reception and she has never asked me for it. I have lost 2kgs in 2.5 weeks and my fitness level has improved no doubt but I am doing all the food research myself. She hasnt given a single piece of advice for food. Infact, I told her that I was maintaining a food diary and would she like to see it and she said, oh yeah bring it and has never asked for it again. Am really wound up now - will give her a piece of my mind tomorrow. Have a look at the Body For Life website and there is a book for women I know so many people who followed this and changed their bodies dramatically No need for a trainer at all and it gives advice on food You can see the before and after pics and they are amazing

Hi, we are in the Sadaf section of JBR on a high floor. A tram stop is being built directly below us and until now we have not been bothered by noise. Occasionally the traffic is a pain but put up with it. However over the past couple of weeks and more lately the past few days the whole apartment has been shaking from the drilling. The dining table vibrates when you are sitting at it, pictures moving on the walls and also stand alone cabinets virbrating with loud noise for up to a couple of minutes whilst the drilling is on. Anyone else experienced this in JBR or other towers in the Marina near the tram development ( specifically where the trams stops are going?) We still would not live anywhere else but this is just a bit worrying. I used to live on the other side and when they were piling for new buildings my whole apartment shook. Needless to say with all the construction etc, broken sleep i moved to a quiet area with a noisy neighbour lol

Well done Queen Beatrix. I really think Queen Elizabeth wisely held on ,am not a fan of the present Heir......his head is waaaaay to much up there with the fairies. I was a great fan of Diana, warts and all ,so that maybe explains it. edited by Nomad on 28/01/2013 edited by Nomad on 29/01/2013 Diana was a crazy chick.... self obsessed, neurotic and a media manipulator. Her so called good deeds were very contrived and not really based on any true substance. . Charles does a LOT of awesome projects in the UK that largely go under the radar; and he has managed to raise (one at least) totally wholesome man in a very very difficult situation. Does anyone know why they are so cheap? Is it just because of how far out it is? Hi ladies ....since weight loss seems to be one of our favourite topics here......has any body tried the Ahlaam Ali program ...she promises to help you shed 10 kilos in 10 weeks... costs 273 $ for the 10 week programme (as mentioned on her website) What i would like to know is if anybody has actually done this program and what have the results been like ....the testimonials seem to be glowing but they'r on her own website. Most people on average lost 2lbs per week on a regular healthy eating and fitness program Why not try weight watchers online or slimming world?. You can eat whatever you want in moderation plus i and many can testify it works. Combine that with cardio/light weights and the weight will drop off. Keep a food and exercise diary you can download an APP called myfitness plan ( It is free) and that gives you all the calorific value of 1000's of foods.

I went into bank today hoping to increase the credit limit on my local credit card. (Used to be a UK bank name but now taken over). This is simply to make better use of the card for booking flights etc online. We have always paid the full balance each month. However was told that I would have to provide a security cheque for the additional amount which I am not prepared to do. Is this normal? I have heard that the central bank made this illegal however some banks are still adopting this practice. To be honest if you do not then they probably wont increase the limit

This has been asked previously and it came down to, you'll have to read your contract to best understand. Some people have a contract that states 12 months of work and then one month holiday paid with ticket. Some have 24 months of work and then two weeks holiday. if the maid fulfills her contract then she is entitled to the holiday pay as listed in the contract. The holiday and contract length should be in your contract. If it isn't then it's up to you. Two years work then only 2 weeks off :-(

Did you face any problems with the customs? is ordering things like cosmetics even allowed, or are they going to be held because they're liquids or powders and they obviously contain chemicals? (makeup is full of it you know).. anything from someone who has tried this would help! I live in Sharjah but whenever I order other things like clothing it comes through dubai if that makes a difference. oh and I also heard that some laws have changed in the past three years but I'm not sure of that. edited by Shay311 on 27/01/2013 I order my Mac online and have it delivered to the UK then my friend posts it Customers have never stopped any parcels and i live and work in Dubai thats good to know! may I ask if your friend sends it to your home address or po box, and does that make a difference? are you saying that you are going on the company's sponsorship rather than staying on your DH's? if you stay on your DH's sponsorship and just obtain the labour card (which is v cheap for the company btw) it is unlikely that they would ask for certificates to be attested. :) Some companies and certain FZ will not allow this

If you've got bags in the boot then I always leave the passenger door open till I've retrieved my bags. This prevents the driver from speeding off before i've got my bags. He actually opened the boot when he stopped by attempting to drive off whilst his boot was still open. Probably never heard of mirror, signal, manouver

I have a few nice dresses and am thinking the really should have a cover to protect them in the wardrobe, any rcmds of what would be best, cotton fabric or just a plastic type cover? And where could I get some? Thanks Daiso perhaps, to be honest i have never seen them here unless you buy the expensive ones from suitacase retailers I tend to keep the dry cleaing plastics ones and use them

We were horrified by the behaviour and attitude of 3 taxi drivers during a 10 day visit to Dubai at Christmas when we were staying with our DS. One even got out of his taxi and threatened our DS. The taxi driver under cut us so he was in the wrong but raging because our DS wouldn't pull back to let him as it would have been too dangerous. The idiot backed off when he saw me taking his pic and taxi number with my mobile. DS contacted the taxi company but has heard nothing. My friend got out of one and was getting her bags out of the boot when he started to drive off She was screaming at him to stop so he slammed his brakes on, reversed and nearly ran her over

Joyce - we are talking about the Oz open final which is currently being played - and wondering if he will be British or Scottish at the end - ie; win or loose. Seriously woman, lighten up. Don't the media play on this though not Mr Murray I just hope he wins and i am English but a Brit too!
