Set yourself a monthly budget for all expenses and stick to it! Use cash not cards. No nipping to Costa. Make your own lunches to take to work. Look for free or cheap entertainment opportunities eg picnic at the beach, join meetup groups Bulk buy food, make large meals and freeze for later use. I believe there's a cash and carry type shop opened near the Green Community for bulk buy. Buy what you need, not what you want. Avoid 'western' supermarkets and products. Don't go over the top tho. Saving for a house is a good idea, but you've still got to live. For holidays look at destinations serviced by Fly Dubai/Air Arabia as flights tend to be reasonable. Look at booking.com or airbnb.com for cheap places to stay. Wherever possible i jump on the metro it saves on petrol and salik I also limit going out on the weekends to twice a month now and my savings have increased considerably.

I saw lots on no lights, and lots of hazards. Totally freaks me out as I assume its an accident. I wonder if people here have ever wondered what the fog light is for. I swear I was the only person on Emirates road with mine on this morning my rental car doesnt even have them ... It depends on the visabilty ( cannot see 100m in front of you) as to when you put your fogs on and not all cars are fitted with them, when i drove in this morning visabilty wasnt that poor so i did not need them

Back to the fog issue - when I was out and about earlier this morning, I was totally amazed at how many drivers had not put on their headlights. I was always taught this was the first thing you did when driving in fog - obviously the authorities here need to get the message across - headlights on (not emergency flashers - though have to say I didn't see any of those this morning for a change). I saw so many hazards and fog lights on when they were not needed and not on where they were I suppose people are taught according to their countries laws that is why it can be so bad

I was told that Amazon would not ship to UAE, but I don't know if this is true. When I was home in the states last fall I purchased a Kindle Fire, you can also buy them here but they're cheaper in US. It was $150 USD, and I can download any books for a fraction of the price of an actual book; and you have then instantly. Also it's just a little tablet, for emails, surfing the web, etc. But anyway I love it & it's already paid for itself because the books are so cheap. I love it! Amazon only ship cd's books and dvd's to the UAE, i have received lots over the years I love my Kindle too!

My friend had the cool sculpting lipo. She wasn't happy with results at all, in fact she said it made no difference. I never noticed a change to her tummy area either tbh. Liposuction does not have to be a general anaesthetic, it depends on the area. Also doesn't have to be a night in the hospital, it can be done as a day case procedure. really? i thought it is always general anaesthesia . do u recommend a good doctor for it? My friend used Dr Khan however she did say it was the most painful thing she had ever had done and was in agony for days

To be honest, a company insisting on knowing what I currently earn before making me an offer would set alarm bells ringing immediately, and I certainly would never show them a salary slip. They should be paying you what [i'>they [/i'>think you are worth, not what another company thinks you're worth. As such, your current salary shouldn't be of any interest to them whatsoever. I'd simply hide behind a confidentiality clause as mentioned below by marycatherine and insist on giving your expectations only. What you earned in the past is utterly irrelevant to their future employment of you. At the very least they should respect the fact that you are steadfastly honouring a commitment made to your existing employer. edited by HereComesTheSun on 22/01/2013 I would like to add that i would try and find out their budget first so we dont waste each others time Alot of employers will ask for proof and you will be amazed at the amount of people who will provide this information

In my own experience, my employment contracts here and in my home country have required that I do not discuss my salary with anyone inside or outside of the company, that the information is confidential. If a potential new employer asked me for the info, I would refuse to give it on those grounds. I've never been asked. Would you want to know what their budget was for the role?

I am in the process of interviewing for a couple of great jobs, and they have asked what my current salary is - I have already deflected them with the common "prefer not to disclose yet" and "would prefer to know what the job is offering", etc etc. but I am at the point now where they are requiring I tell them my current salary. my current job pays not nearly what I should be earning, but I accepted the job anyways because it was my first job coming to Dubai from the U.S. and I looked at it as gaining experience in the UAE. but seriously, since I came here and now know the market, its literally half of what I want to be earning and could be earning. So is it ok to inflate my pay? can I say I am making more than I am, so that I can be considered for a better salary? do they check or ask for verification?? any advice ladies please!! It is common for clients to ask you and the same would be asked from a recruitment agency helping you find work. Personally speaking i would never inflate my salary i would tell them what i was looking for.

Make sure your next door neighbour isn't a chair scraping, heel wearing nocturnal noisy person! Or upstairs neighbour! Immpossible feat ;) Polly you wouldn't believe my neighbour She doesn't work, comes alive at 11pm until 7am, hoovering, cleaning her balcony, cooking on a hotplate on her balcony, banging dishes around, shouting, crying the list of 1 years broken sleep is endless. I have tried to speak with her politely, inform security, banging on the wall, complaining directly to Emmar and to the police all to no avail. It has got to the point where i will have to move which is sad as i love where i live. She has no respect for anyone else and does not care as she says it her home to do as she wishes. :-( I have been told wear earplugs which isnt great when you set an alarm clock for work. Grrrrrr

I don't believe in 'once a cheater, always a cheater', nor do I believe that every man who cheats has something wrong in his marriage. Men who cheat are actually weaker than those who don't, and it is possible to recover a marriage if this is what you would like to do. I suggest that you go home with him and then tell him that you know and offer him the option of joint counseling. If you do not want to continue the marriage, then start collecting now. As for the other person, well, it will bring you no satisfaction at all to reveal anything to her. I do agree with you, i had female frends at home who cheated and it literally saved their marriages Some people are pre-conditioned to do it and continue to do so, literally have their cake, eat it and make a trifle out of the leftovers.

So sorry you are facing this, but you seem very level headed about how to proceed ((hug)). I also would be doubtful she is unaware of his marital status, he has likely spun her some sorry tale of how you are separated. marriage over in all but name, living under the same roof for lots of reasons ...... sorting out finances, kids, school, you are crazy, local laws etc. etc. I would imagine he is asking her to be patient until he sorts everything out at home, and she is prepared to wait !! Take care of yourself, I think you are doing the right thing in being very discreet about your findings. Good Luck I know so many women that have been taken in by MM and lied to. Men can be very manipulative when they want to be and can weave all kinds of lies. If she does know then Karma will eventually catch up with her if she doesnt then she needs all the help she can get as who would want to be with a man who treats his Wife that way? Regretably relationships break down and people do get hurt. It seems as if the poster wants to protect herself, children and future which is admirable, i cannot imagine for one minute that it will be easy doing it from here. When i left my ex Husband i didn't have children and he went from being a nice guy who couldn't do enough for me to a nightmare so i left with nothing, i was homeless, penniless, carless but i managed to pick myself up and move on. I didnt give him any satisfaction in acting like a nutcase and anyone who says they would chop his @@@@ off wouldnt as that is the last thing you think about when you are cheated on. I tried to behave with as much dignity as i could and had my crazy moments in private. Of course years later he tried to crawl back and i gladly told him to do one! That was my revenge

I was driving down Jumeirah Beach rd yesterday, with my kids in the car, when I was stopped by a police officer who told me to remove my Windowsox as they are not allowed! My first instinct was to point out all the almost 100% blackout cars that were driving past us and ask what he intended to do about them, but I refrained... >:-( I thought any kind of car adornment was illegal here, stickers, sox etc I agree about the completely blacked out windows though

But if you add E Gate to the emirates ID, and your Emirates ID expires, you will need to get that added on again and pay again for this to get added. a normal E gate doesnt have an expiry only an issue date It expires 2 years from the issue date. It says that on the back of my card :-)

I would also ask how long you knew each other before you fell pregnant and married For some people it can work and does however how well did you really know each other? were you on the same page as to where you wanted the relationship to go, pre baby and marriage? As per the other poster i could probably forgive him not getting on with my Mum however i couldnt live with someone that threatened with leaving on a daily basis, didnt figure me or the baby in his lifeplan or care if he saw his child. It must be an awful thing for you to go through and i do hope you sort it out.

Hi all, we've been told about a massive car yard where you can buy used cars cheaply but we don't seem to find any reference of it when we look on the net. Apparently its in RAK? Not sure, I'm new here to Dubai and don't know my way around that well yet. Does anyone have any clue? We a renting a car at the moment but would like to buy one in the next couple of weeks when our residency visa comes through. I appreciate any help given. Thanks in advance. If full school, accommodation, health insurance and tickets home are paid for, then 35K would be enough to live on, depending on your current loan payments etc. Sorry I was not clear, I heard that the 35k is the full package salry including school accomodation etc. The basic salary is probably 1/3 of 35k which means, we got all paid and then we have 13k left for all other expenses(food, maybe a maid!!) Schooling is quite expensive here and after rent i would say that is where the bulk of the salary would go. 35 incl schooling with 3 kids is not enough (Hwever that is my opinion) Do you need 2 cars? a maid? Utilties are not that cheap. Electricity bills can rocket in the Summer due to the excessive need of air conditioning. Yes it is tax free but tax free only on salary/cigarettes and petrol. Alcohol, food and eating out/internet is expensive here

Sorry if this has been spoken about before, but DH will be flying in and out of Dubai frequently due to a new assignment. In order to beat the long queues at immigration/customs etc he would like to purchase an E-gate card so he can save lots of time at the airport. Where can he get one from please? How much? Is it usual for the company to get one for him? Dnata at the airport or the centres across Dubai I think it is 200AED It is not usual practice for companies to provide them for employees They are on occasion not working

Hi all A silly question perhaps, but has anyone seen waterproof, insulated boots for adults (snow boots) or at a push, wellingtons, here? Have seen a few that I like on Amazon, but shop and ship courier costs will be more than the boots are worth...will need them for very low temps in Norway. There is an option to rent some at our destination also, but would rather have my own. Thanks in advance... Columbia or Timberland if any of the malls have those shops

Is that the brand name? If you know what the ingredient is and how much of it is there, take that to the pharmacy and they should be able to tell you what it is. Brand names often differ between here and the US, UK, and Oz, but the ingredient should be the same. I've had really itchy skin the last two weeks or so as well, not my ezcema but just itchy, like I;ve been bitten. Wonder what it is? Its miconazole and hydrocortisone

Hi there, Question for all the Dutch/belgian. recently moved in this appt and we have eLife through etisalat. We would also like to see the channel bvn , but that is apparantly not on their bouquet of channels :-( do we need to buy a new dish? and if yes, where do we buy that? Thanks! I think unless they are provided through the legal telecoms companies here and there aren't many you won't be able to get it Alot of the dishes and decoders here are used by ex pats to get their home country channels and they are illegal. We have to use the designated telecoms company OSN, Du etc which may not provide the channels you require.

Eden sorry you lost the thread - it was about working mums right? I swear some women just like to stir the pot and make other mums feel bad when we are all trying our best. You do not need to justify your decisions to anyone - there are a lot of judgmental people out there who wouldn't dare say the things they do about working mothers in their own country. In the UK it is the norm for both parents to work, and anyone coming out with some of the preachy lines they do on here would be beaten round the head by all the other mothers!! Weigh things up, see what job offers you get, and there are a lot of nurseries here that operate year round and are fantastic. See how sympathetic your employer is too, perhaps you can work from home sometimes? As for the Alex Shoes thread - hilarious! I thought it was quite reasonable...! Although in the UK my Sister gets grief from the Mums at the school gate as she is a SAHM Each to their own and i agree with your post

The reasoning given for more Salik gates is to reduce traffic on the SZR. I'm not a traffic flow expert but this does not seem to make sense, for one thing where will the traffic go instead and if we look at how it was before we had any Salik gates I cannot say its less congested now at peak times than it was when there were no gates at all. So what have the existing Salik gates achieved in that regard. Surely the way to reduce traffic on the SZR is to build an equally sufficient alternative highway? I agree, SZR at peak times is at a standstill and it has Salik gates on it ?

If you are into Natural History, I have just finished watching "The Polar Bear Family and Me" by the BBC filmed over a year in the Arctic. Also downloaded "Tankies" onto my BBC iPlayer (documentary about WW2 tank heroes). There is a new program called Privates about men from WW2 that looks good
