You know, the whole sick note thing is understandable, to avoid people calling in for hangovers, or on holidays--I get that. But earlier this year, I had a boss who was already angry with me for "not thinking of his business first" (how dare I come down with acute bronchitis, what was I thinking!?) but then to add insult, I go to the doctor only to find out a sick note costs 80 dhs! Why am I paying for a sick note after you have just diagnosed me with acute bronchitis and out me on two types of meds? I'm just not used to that. I had this in the UK with an ex boss. I had caught chicken pox at the age of 21 from my darling Nephew and my boss wanted me to stand outside his place of work so he could see that i was telling the truth! Covered in scabs.

You're lucky your company allow you to take 11 separate instances of leave in such a short space of time. Our company rules allow for 2 days sick without a doctors note, but this is on condition that such occurrences don't exceed more than 5 days a year, otherwise, the chop. Fair enough I think, as I would be worried about the commitment of a person who feels it's ok to take so many individual days as sick, unless of course there is a medical condition that can be backed up with a doctors certificate. I have to agree with Here comes the sun, it's not an entitlement and they probably think you are taking the yellow stuff. not more the 5 sick days a year is shocking... some people are just prone to fall ill more then another... as long as you provide a sick note it should be fine... and as per the new ruling (2 years now) all sick leaves are issued but Dubai Health Authority so there can be no hanky panky business plus it cost 50 bucks to get this.... 5 days a year????? and then they sack you? they are operating outside the law and if they did sack someone they could take them to court. She's saying they allow 5 days a year WITHOUT a doctor's certificate. After that they require proof, and if you don't provide you're in trouble. Seems fair enough. I need to go to specsavers lol

Hi Everyone, My family and I are relocating to Dubai mid January. I have a 4.5 yr old and a little girl of 18months. As i am also giving up my job to come over with my partner I am anxious that I might feel isolated and lonely when we get there!! Any advice or contacts that would be helpful would be greatly appreciated. We are in temporary accomodation for the first 4 weeks and then hope to rent in the GReen community area. Partner are you not married? Took the words right out of my mouth... I would be scared that i would get caught!

I'm new in Dubai with my little baby, and think of getting a live in maid, or one that comes around regularly to help me out. My questions: What kind of work does your live in maid do? Can I find one, who comes around for a few hours, and does some cleaning or takes care of my baby while I go to the gym, or do things where I can't take my baby with me? Or does it necessarily has to be a live in maid? Do they all have to have a seperate room, or can she stay in my babies room? If you are not sponsoring her you would need to use an agency Most sponsored maids live in although i believe there is a small supply of those that do not. Some want their own room some may share it depends on the maid, however a live in is permanent if that makes sense

hey everyone, how does it work with sick leave? I am working in JAFZA and my company has deducted all my sick days (11 single days) from my salary. Do you need a docotor's certificate for 1 day sick leave???!!! And on what base they calculate the deduction, only on basic salary or on gross salary (means including housing allowance, car allowance, medical etc.)? Thanks for quick replies! You need a certificate from the first day sickleave as previously mentioned. Sorry to ask but have you been 11 times one day sick as this is how it sounds ... and it seems to be a lot ... 11 times one day, but they also count 1 full day when you are coming 1 hour late in the office! As the salaries are paid much too late, we are also sometimes late in the office :-) I would be handing my notice in and looking for a new job Any company that paid me late wouldnt be employing me

I have recently moved to Dubai and my husband and I are in heated debates about what car to buy. I have my eye on the Volvo XC90 7 seater, his concern is that the air conditioning is not powerful enough to reach the back of the car. He is looking at the Nissan Patrol or a Pajero. We have an 18 month old and I know it gets super hot in the summer months. Anyone who has an XC90 please advise or any other 4x4 with powerful air con. Thank you I read an article that the FJ Cruiser had the best resale value of all cars in the region Sorry i cannot advise on the air/con though I think you find that cars that are built in cold countries don't have the best aircon even though they are modified for here My friend has a Pajero and her air con is fine ( Her car is old too)

In that case I stand corrected - you are not on probation but that is still a lot of time off in 6 months hence why they are deducting probably. You normally have to be off for 3 days in a row before a Drs note is requested. I would speak to your HR department about this - did you have previous deductions for sick days? Have they taken the deduction of your daily rate as your basic salary or your full compensation? they have the deduction from as my full compensation Hello I have just spoken with a friend who is a Senior HR bod at the FZ You have to have a sick note from day 1, if you do not provide this they can deduct the money as it is classed as loss of pay No more than 15 days in 1 year and no more than 7 days in 6 months They should only deduct on your basic only

seems very bizarre - last week they were 2 for £3 in Sainsburys when I was back home! I envisage crumbly white spotty chocolate! Got the Quality Street too while I was there - that is such a rip off here too! Though I've often wondered why we 'have to have' QS etc as a Christmas staple? QS at Xmas is the law although in our house we used to take the sellotape off, pinch the toffee pennies and replace the sellotape before Xmas day which was the official day we could open them haha

How many sick days have you had in 1 year as i think there is a limit to what you can have? Sorry i couldnt be much help i am familar with outside FZ's only

Seriously some of the dogs i have seen need to go to heaven, . Why? What have they done wrong? Surely it's humans that have no doubt had a rather large hand in whatever it is and so shouldn't you say the same for them? No doubt some people would have said the same about my boy before he came to us as he had behavioural issues. With a loving, understanding home and huge does of TLC he is totally gorgeous and cute as a button. Eta - whilst waiting to find your fur-ever friend, maybe you could look at fostering. Dubai senior dog project has pictures of some lovely old timers that would love to be looked after, if not for you lolacat, then maybe someone else reading this :) edited by summer breeze on 06/12/2012 People will always disagree with euthanasia. I am an advocate of it when dogs bite at every oppourtunity or are so abused they have very little quality of life or sit in kennels for years because they are so difficult to rehome. yes most is due to humans (not all), but that is no reason not to put an animal down that should not be rehomed. No I don't want to foster, carry on every one else. As for some of this extremley aged dogs being rehomed for a few months, sorry just don't get it. How anyone who has had a loyal dog for 10 or 15 years can just give it away is beyond me. That's like giving granny away......nope. I think people should be vetted before they are allowed a dog etc. I could never leave one behind either.

Unlocking (Hacking) a phone is illegal. Unlocking isnt the same as hacking is it? Unlocking is when a mobile provider locks it to their own network so you cannot use another Sim card Hacking is where someone gains access to someones phone to try and obtain information from it ( voicemail, texts) If unlocking is illegal then half the shops in Dubai and places that do it in the UK should be closed down and i am sure that the powers that be are aware of these traders.

thanks everyone for the tips. I've heard of Hollywood tans so will check them out. Has no one been to Essential? I have they use St Tropez which is my opinion is the best You will not go orange but blend your feet in after she has sprayed as they can go patchy. I just use my bronzer and or fake tan at home Remember to shave and exfoliate. I do not shower the night i get it done i just put old dark sheets on my bed. You will scare yourself when you look in the mirror once it has developed haha. Wash off and loads of moisturiser. The pants they give you do not preserve your dignity however the spray tan lady there is lovely.

Ive been in Dubai for 4 years now, and as im about to go through a divorce, i would like to meet other women who have been through a similar case as mine. i think my friends who are married are so bored to tears with my ranting and stories. In that case I hope they never have to go through it. No matter how much you rant about it, a true friend never gets bored or tired. Sorry, I know they're your friends, but people just expect you to move on after a bit when you might need more time. I would expect them to be there for you. It depends how long you want to rant for. I would always be there for friends however personally and i have been through it found i got bored of talking about it constantly. Eventually you have to stop as i dont think it is healthy. I am talking months not recent if that makes sense. Even so, not everyone deals with it the same way and I guess we won't know unless we have been through it.. It doesn't sound too much - usual for this area of the world. I am not sure but I would take: Passports Birth certificates Lots of photos Some info regarding where you are staying and maybe why you are extending Money Of course you will need to go to typing centre first to make the application document and pay the money. Then, into immigration to submit documents. Good luck! When i did mine in Dubai i only needed passport and cash ( Birth certs for kids i understand) they didnt ask why i was extending i just paid and was done
