don't forget the salt! I've never dyed anything so not sure what you mean? Do I have to use salt as well? Or have I just walked in and said something really stupid?! It will say what you need on the back of the packet and yes you need salt i think it acts as a bonding agent and no you havent said something stupid :-)

Hello Ladies, I'm hoping some of you may be able to help. Myself and OH are going to a B/day party and there is a dress up theme 'to come as your favourite cuddly toy'................ Well, as it will be a brunch, I don't want to look like an utter Walter and turn up in a full fluffy bunny or teddy bear ensemble, not forgetting that also may be a tad hot! So, I was thinking of a snout and ears combo, has anyone seen such mask/hairbands in any of the party or fancy dress shops here? We've seen foam, full face masks, but that's not really what we'd like to do. If any of you have seen anything, I'd be really grateful if you could share, or if anyone has any other fab ideas of what we could do, that would be good to hear too. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. :) Mr Bens is good and has a website

Captain America, In the UK my hairdresser is not Black and I don't use Black hair products on my hair.. I would just need a good hairdresser that can do Afro hair. In England the Black only hair salons are not very good- in my opinion.. There are some here, my hairdressers salon ink used to have an African receptionist and they did so many different things with her hair

My DH's brand new black, jean type trousers have been washed and are streaky. They should have gone in on a 30 degree wash but my maid put them in on a quick wash and suspect it was too hot. Anyone know if I can dye them and if so where can I buy dye from? Thank you ladies. Park and shop and yes. I have dyed several pairs of jeans

I understand Dangerous Blonde. Your not telling me something I don't understand. I am of Caribbean decent. Its the same, if not worse if you move to the Caribbean, your on your own - you pay for everything, no state support, and you don't have anything like Dubai when it comes to employment, accommodation etc...That's why I have taken what each of you have all said very seriously. No, I wouldn't need to train as a PA, I was a manager in my career, and I'm not talking about a PA who just does IT, paperwork, filling. But I get you, if they can get it cheaper from other countries why not! understand :) Please forgive me if you thought I was suggesting slumming it to be a negative.. That's not what I meant. I am happy to flat share.... but I don't want to be sleeping on the beach :) I Just have a clear picture in my mind of what I want to be doing, I will work 2-3 jobs if I have too, but I will still be working towards my plan. Maybe Dubai is not the place for me??! :\: Hello it is swings and roundabouts some people land a great job immediately for others it takes time. It is luck of the draw at times. With regards to working 3 jobs most employers wont allow you to work a 2nd job and most of us work long hours so the thought of a 2nd job probably will not enter your mind The best mind set to have it to visit here for at least a month, bring plenty of cash and be prepared to network, send CVs out and wait for responses that may take a while :-)

I would agree with you - it's tough anywhere, but extra tough here as there is no safety net. No benefits, no social help, no family to call upon during hard times. You're on your own for everything (a GP appointment costs 60GBP) - nothing is free and that's why people suggest having a big stash of cash as there are huge start up costs. You won't pay rent monthly - you pay it in 1 or 2 cheques per year. For an apartment in the Marina, that's around 10-12,000GBP that you have to pay upfront, plus fees. I applaud people with high standards but it's also important to be realistic about one's own skills and marketability. You say you now want to retrain again to be a PA despite having no actual experience - again, there are thousands of applicants with local experience and very few of these roles that will pay salaries to your expectations. You have to understand the dynamics of Dubai - in the UK companies pay good money for people to do jobs such as PAs, accountants, IT etc, here they employ huge numbers of people from the subcontinent / Philippines who will accept 1/4 of what a Westerner might. They won't look at your Uni or grades, it's all about paying the minimum. Isn't it a little entitled to not "lower your expectations or goals" considering you have a very varied skillset, and we are in the middle of a recession? We all have to do so at some points in our lives, and "slum it" occasionally, there is no shame in that. The people I have known who stick to their very militant expectations have either ended up 1) in loads of debt or 2) going home as nothing meets their very high standards. I lived in shared accomodation when i first arrived here and slummed it ( to a point) most people start off that way. I agree entirely with your comments finding work here is very difficult at present and the amount of people wanting to be PA's ( Who do not have the experience) is huge versus the ones who do have UAE experience who cannot find work as the salaries have dropped in recent years. Make sure you have a stash of cash as it isnt cheap here at all!

Hi ladies, Well, I spent 3 hours at the Dubai Mall today running a few errands but mainly searching for a strapless bra! Didn't find anything that was suitable. I am size 36A / 34B and all the ones for small boobs stuck out at the top. I'm looking for a seamless/no visible seam, smooth nude one. Is my search impossible? Every time I watch Gok, his models are wearing gorgeous underwear and lovely strapless bras. I'm willing to pay for a good one. Thanks ladies. If you've already enjoyed your experience here and can imagine living here then you probably already like the city for its many benefits - year round sunshine, tax free, lots to do. You will easily meet lots of people as it is really easy - people are all expats and generally very friendly and open. Your interests will also serve you well in opening doors - there are all sorts of clubs and groups for sports. In regards to renting a studio - most apartments here are rented for a year with no cancellation clause and frequently paid upfront. You can always stay in a furnished apartment - they are around 1,000 - 1500GBP per month for a nice serviced 1 bed in Tecom for example. As for jobs, this is the most important bit. You will need a job to have a sponsor for your visa - every single expat is sponsored by someone (either husband, or company) - no probs if you just come for a month as you have a 30 day tourist visa, but will be an issue if you decide to stay longer. Your biggest indicator if you can live here is your job situation -and this is where you must do your most research. The job market is tough in Dubai right now, it's no longer 2007 and despite being well educated, experienced etc (and btw local UAE experience is more prized than any other for most positions), I know many people who could not find work and left, or who have had to settle for not great salaries because they couldn't find work. This ultimately will decide whether you can move here or not as Dubai is a very expensive, unforgiving city. Your work will also provide health cover which can mount up quickly if you're not covered. Do some research and see if you can find something - and also research setting up your own business, you may be put off when you see how expensive and difficult it is! Good luck! Have known friends to stay in the Media Rotana paying monthly and her visa was under process. It's basically like a long hotel stay! I meant for the regular apartments/villas ( Like what we live in) :-)

We only need a maid 2 times a week but would need the same maid every time as we have animals - do companies offer that? Thanks I have never known any of the agencies send the same person each time. A colleague visiting from UK is arriving in Dubai c 2200 Hrs tomorrow evening and needs to go directly to Abu Dhabi. Can he negotiate a price with one of the airport taxi drivers for the trip or does he go by the meter? I seriously doubt he can negotiate purely because they are all metered at the airport and the journey starts at 25AED. I dont think they can turn the meter off

That's exactly what we do and we have a big external hard drive attached to the Mac Mini. The only difference is that we use the set up for all our media. You may need to buy an HDMI cable to the signal from the Mac Minil to the TV, they're aboutn 125dhs (from memory)' and can be bought almost anywhere. The latest Mac Mini comes with 500GB of memory, so that's an awful lot of photos. If your photos are valuable to you then there is a function on the Mac Mini called Time Machine which will automatically back up anything on your Mac Mini to an external hard drive and it's so so easy to set up. If you decide to go this route and buy a hard drive then maybe go for one that has a Thunderbolt connection. Thunderbolt is the super fast cable that would connect your Mac Mini to the external hard drive. Western Digital makes several of the above and they do not need a separate a power supply as they are powered by the computer and quite small. Sorry if the above is too much detail. It may sound complex, but it's really very very easy. Any questions, send them in. You can get a HDMI from Choitrhams mine cost 30AED my first one was 120 and broke :-(

I use witopia but it's blocked here hence I've named it. So u will needto find free unblocked vpn to download w with. It is paid cant remember how much. With this u can use on pc mac iPad etc for uk, us. 2 vpns running at any one time. Then u download itv and bbc player from app store must be uk store I think. Thanks :-)

This was not a major news network--local station. You do have a point. But then again--so does the anchorwoman. They did put the emailer on blast, in a sense, but they didn't name him. I guess I get weary of people that are not overweight feeling justified in "calling out" people who are overweight like they are some kind of self-appointed crusaders for the general good of public health. Everyone has the right to their opinion, I just think the fat shaming is getting out of hand as of late, and it causes more of a social divide and hurt than good. I also see a lot of bullying on social media--most recently by a new swanky gym in Dubai on their FB page. If people who are fit and want to spread the message of happiness through a fit lifestyle, leading by example with a humble and kind heart goes a long way, rather than stupid facebook posts, especially those which contain a photo of a subject who did not consent to being blasted for marketing purposes. Know what I mean? edited by Beebers on 03/10/2012 Beebers can you give any clues as to what gym this is? Just want to check it's not a picture of me on their page lol! CF had some dodgy advertising at one point

I had my NT scan 5 days ago and my scan was excellent . They collected my blood and told me the i'll receive the combined result in 4 days. They called me yesterday to inform that i am at high risk (1:80) . I am 30 years old, scan was good..i am very stressed, don't know how to act, what to feel..:( They recommended invasive test...I'm worried of a possible misscarriage , what if there was an improper handling of my blood? where they send it, how was the conditions of transportation, should i trust the blood result or repeat it again? I know that at Fetal medicine center- Dubai healthcare city can give me the result within one hour, do you recommend me to repeat it, or to proceed with Amnio..?? Hi ladies Im sorry for being so quiet here but we had bad news. We lost the foetus We went for the 8.4 week scan and the heartbeat had stopped and growth had stopped at 7.3 weeks. Even though I was very aware of the risks and very cautiously optimistic, we were still devastated and cried for 2 days. I know that some 1 in 4 pregnancies end in mc and I suppose I believed that with all the good luck we had conceiving that we might bypass this cruel trick by mother nature. Anyway, I read that the during the first 12 weeks, the foetus searches for genetic data every day in order to grow another part of itself. And when some data is not available it stops there. So we know that it wasn’t anything we did, or ate, or anything wrong with the IVF process, but rather that it was pre-destined due to the possibly the poor egg quality. Next step was to come out of denial and prepare for a miscarriage. There seem to be many advantages and risks for both natural and D&C, and so we opted to wait until my body started the process and finally end it in the hospital. So last week Wed night I got cramps and headed to City for the procedure. Dr Sima Delgahndi did the procedure and she was fantastic. I cant fault City hospital as they were all excellent. But a few hours after being discharged I got very sick with E-coli gastro! No, it wasn’t the hospital food as Dh snacked off all my food and is fine. We suspect a quiche eaten a few days before and the cramps I felt were probably not even the miscarriage starting but the E-coli. It felt like a horrible double whammy. Very luckily for me there was very little pain or bleeding from the D&C and Im really glad I didn’t start to miscarry at home during the gastro – and I think those cramps would have started it off – as it would have been an impossible mess. So, otherwise it will take time to grieve and get over this and decide what to do next. Im still very pro adoption and Dh is still not and Im struggling with that as Id rather we drop this IVF story and give my body a break. Time will tell. Thanks for the lovely support I had here through the whole process – it was a huge help. I don’t want any newly pregnant ladies or those considering IVF to be put off by this. Hi. My mothers friend needs to see a doctor, possibly needs a blood test. I have insurance for my family and maid and so I'm really not sure about all this and don't know where to suggest. I assume a government clinic, is that correct? if so, which one? Could somebody on EW who has had a uk guest visit a doctor here tell me the best thing to suggest? Thank you. I can recommend TIGI Bed Head too. My hair is dark blonde with some highlights and the hair is fine,wavy and there's loads of it. I use TIGI Dumb blonde at the moment. I hate the name but it's a good shampoo for my hair. I find that changing shampoo and conditioner every now and then helps too. I have tried the cheap supermarket ones and they just seem to damage the hair after a few washes. I like Redken too but haven't found it here yet. Anybody know where to get it? My hairdressers used to use Redken but i havent seen it for a while I cant use TIGI products so stick to Kerastace and Osmo which i found in salon services in the UK, you can get their products in some Al Maya's and Choitrhams Tresemme gives me an itchy scalp grrr

I use a company called Churchill. They come to your house and they are fast and efficient. They did a great job for me. I can't remember how much I paid them as was a year ago but I remember that they were really affordable. You can reach them on 800 7076 or [email protected]. My sofa which is a 5 seater and cream! was 250AED they even got the red wine out ooops Just to let everyone know that Churchill's has put their prices up from AED 80 to AED 86 per seat for wet cleaning so a 5 seater is now AED430. I have the guys here now and they said that it's never been AED 250 to clean a 5 seater. also, not sure if this helps but a colleague of mine has been through house problems recently and if a landlord wants to either sell the property, or, move into it themselves, they have to give 12 months notice!!! In writing too i may add!

Who are the undesirables of Dubai? Anyone (male or female) who goes to check out what people look like in a wet t-shirt! Dirty perves! :) They can perve all they want on the beach or at any of the bars here. Besides i doubt it will turn into a wet t shirt concert

Oh! A wet t-shirt competition in Dubai :\: Lool that's what I thought! :P And we were worried about dress code! Let's hope the shirts aren't white! If word gets out there will be a stampede, will be filled with loads of undesirables Who are the undesirables of Dubai?

I use a company called Churchill. They come to your house and they are fast and efficient. They did a great job for me. I can't remember how much I paid them as was a year ago but I remember that they were really affordable. You can reach them on 800 7076 or [email protected]. My sofa which is a 5 seater and cream! was 250AED they even got the red wine out ooops

Hey Ladies Have any of you been to any Ethiopian restaurants here in Dubai? I looked at the Time Out website but just wanted to know if any of you had personally tried them before I make my choice for dinner :) TIA My friend and her DH have been to one in Deira and they took their Ethiopian maid let me try and find out where they went to and what it was like
