Good morning ladies, We have 2 rugs/carpets at home, nothing fancy, 200x300cm. I found threads on Churchill who will come around and clean them, but they have a minimum charge and I don't have enough things they can clean to cover that. My husband suggested to buy a carpet washing machine and keep them clean all year round. Great idea except I have only found 1 machine so far that does this: Hoover Wash 'n' Dry at Carrefour. It's quite big and bulky, and as it's upright, can't be stored on a shelf (I'm comparing to Rainbow in terms of size, who once came around for a demo but its way too expensive). Anyone out there using a different brand? Which? Where from? And what was the cost? Or does anyone know of another company that will pick up or come over to clean rugs without charging so much? I asked one laundry place and they charged AED 700 per rug! They cost AED 2,000 each so cost of maintenance should make sense... Thanks! I have the Karcher one very good, bought it from ACE

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows of open houses or women's group gatherings where I can offer jewelry for sale? A bit of background: I am the owner and designer behind a new jewelry brand with a unique concept: contemporary everyday jewelry that takes inspiration from Islamic art and architecture..I've found that there's very little information out there about the kind of events I'm looking for and exhibitions charge an arm and a leg. Since I'm a start-up, I can't really afford it at this stage! Also, ARTE is not an option for me as my products are not made in the UAE and flea markets are not suitable either because my price point means I would be targeting the wrong kind of customer. Any information would be highly appreciated! Thanks edited by azzarabi on 23/02/2013

MrsB how much discount do you get? And, do they automatically give you discount or do uou need to ask for it? My DH has racked up quite a few fines which is going to be quite a hit to his wallet when he re-registers the car!! Will be good if we can get a discount!! Usually around Ramadan and at the traffic department although my colleague went in around this time last year and they wouldn't give her discount even though it was posted in the newspaper. I have it in my head that it is 20%

It says: "Renewal of Contract is at the discretion of the landlord". And "The Contract is valid up to the end of the specified period after which date it is considered null and void". Are you saying these points are illegal? Most contracts say the same he cannot force you out. He has to give 12 months notice in writing to sell. It is LAW and if he wants clarification he can contact the rent committee My friend had a mare with her LL recently so she lodged her signed contract and cheques with the rental committee and did not go through the LL ( She was being soooo difficult) They issued her a new contract for 12 months All renewals are at the discretion of the landlord however they can only evict under certain circumstances and they have to be bad reasons ( subletting etc) He does not have a leg to stand on.

Hi ladies , how are you all ? Well one of my old friends will send me her husband's CV , and she ask me to send it or go and leave it in banks (his carreer) but i dont know , how ? Where can i go ? Is it ok in any branches or should i go to the main branch ? Just to leave his CV ANY recommendations will be very grateful! Thanks Should he not be out networking? I would advise that he applies online at the banks career portals. I doubt many places would take his CV directly and it may end up with the wrong person.

Howdra hung all the brackets etc for the panels i have in my living room ( I purchased them though) They are not as straightforward as curtain rails Maybe they can do the curtain rails and perhaps take the curtains that need tailoring to a tailor in Satwa etc.

So, legally, he can't get us out until 23 Feb next year? The LL has to give you 12 months notice in writing Sneaking in a 1 month clause is illegal and he/she cannot do this Is your current contract non renewable or renewable? If it does not state non renewable then he has to give you 12 months written notice This is LAW and he cannnot get around it There has been so much recentlywritten in the press about this and it seems the rent committee etc are favoring the tenants which is great news He cannot raise your rent either unless the rental calculator stipulates that the area you live in has risen by 25%. If it has risen then he/she can only raise by 5%. The rental calculator is now the law.

I had some bad hair extensions put in when I was in London recently and now I want to take them out and get them redone by a hairdresser who knows what they are doing. Can anyone recommend a good, English speaking hairdresser in Dubai who uses keratin extensions? I have used Kelly at Salon Ink 3 times and never had a problem They are pricey at AED40 per extension but they use micro rings they stayed in perfect condition for 4 months and the colour match was spot on. At one point i had 200 which cost alot so i now use clip ins. When they came out after the 2nd lot my hair was not damaged in anyway For a slightly cheaper option i believe Great Lengths are also good however i have never been there.

I disagree completely with the comments. Roles for ex pats are far easier to source whilst you are in the region. Clients prefer to see potential applicants face to face not via the telephone etc. if they can locally hire they will due to cost saving on ex pat packages. HR roles are still abundant across various sectors however you do have to consider Emiratization and Arabic speaking candidates. The fact that you have EMEA experience is attractive however recruitment can be slow in this part of the world. If you do decide to come here bring plenty of cash, network, do your research, obtain a local contact number and register with every good agency you can, however agencies will only contact you if they have a suitable role. Good luck

Straight up, I don't think it's a good idea to move here without a job. Maybe you want to check out the place and have a look, but to move here with the intention of finding a job in 2 months is in my opinion, very unrealistic (and not a good career move). It is not worth the upheaval and risk to come here without having signed a contract first. It's extremely expensive to set up here, and that's with an employer who may provide some sort of allowances. It doesn't sound like you've done a lot of research on your industry here in the UAE. I think it'd be a better idea to establish more contacts, get in touch with companies directly (not just recruiters), and see from there. Have a clear understanding of the salary and package you expect to receive, and be realistic about your expectations given the UAE landscape, your personal and professional background, and goals. I agree completely. With emiratization leading the way here at the moment, even experienced HR managers here are being replaced by locals. Emiratis are currently graduating from courses such as business and HR and are looking for employment. I suggest you do some serious research before coming here. If you decide to come before you have a firm contract in place, I suggest you have A LOT of money saved as you are going to need it. Accommodations is very expensive for a start and generally, Dubai is becoming more and more expensive to live. Do not believe the "get rich quick" stories of old - those days have long gone.

I think this is something to do with having a Dubai credit card. Do you have a US/UK one you could use as I believe this gets around the problem? There is another way around it by buying Amazon Gift Certificates and then your Kindle purchases will come off this rather than your credit card. I have a UAE credit card but input a UK address for billing and mine works ok

Hello! I've been trying to download books on my Kindle but the majority of them are unable in the Middle East Kindle Store. Can someone please give me a step by step guide about how to create a US Amazon account? Thanks in advance! ETA - I did try creating a US account but when I used wifi to sync my kindle, I got an address change notification and couldn't access any of the books I had purchased from the US store edited by em2san on 21/02/2013 I have a UK account and a Dubai credit card I had to use my UK address, i could not create a US one as i do not live there I do remember my colleague being told to make one up ( by a guy in Virgin Megastore) however i personally would not do that. Do you have any relatives in the US/UK where you can register the address

Yes but we didn't live in a country with temperatures of 30 - 40 degrees for most of the year. We didn't want to bath because it was too ****** COLD - no central heating and a " shower " - what was that ? A rubber hose that attached to the taps and always blew off with the water pressure! :D What era was this? 1920's? No - Scotland 1960s and 1970s ! :D Chester early 1970's also, we had an emersion heater, 4 kids and 2 adults, we shared bath water with a sibling ( i imagine the comments i will get on that) due to the hot water running out and having to wait for it to fill up and heat up again Oh i miss the good old days

According to the radio, it was a five car accident, but don't know more than that. Hope all are okay. FFx It seems to be getting worse There was a lady in a Nissan Tilda this morning driving like a lunatic swerving in and out of lanes to get ahead of one car in the fast lane. These people have no regard for anyone but themselves If they cause an accident they should be banned for life! and their car crushed

My DH is thinking of taking on a young man ( 18 +) to train as his assistant, but doubts that there are any here living with mum and dad because of the visa problem. Before DH puts feelers out to friends in the UK, is it worth advertising here for a young Brit male, or are they non existant?? As it is for a new company, it's not going to be a massive salary to begin with, but would include visa/airfare/medical. Are there young British males here are do they all disappear because of the visa issue at 18 ?? I know a few so yes there are

Before you choose a destination check which vaccines your baby will have to get before. For that reason I wouldn't go to the tropics with such little kids. Why not Europe? It's the best in summer! I dont think Thailand, SL or HK require jabs

Thank you all. This is for my friend, she is an Asian, having 2 years of Admin experience( not in UAE though). I highly doubt that she is good at Arabic but yes is well-versed and good command over English. The sponsor will be her husband and timings sun-thu 8:00-5:00. Edited to Add that she is an MBA edited by sJVC on 19/02/2013 To be honest, I would doubt a company will hire and MBA holder for an admin job. She is over qualified, and salaries for a normal admin job are low. Alot of companies would like the fact she has an MBA and 2 years is not over qualified for admin

Kenya, because of animal safaris but will there be too much travel involved within kenya, like drive to masai mara etc. help! Hi everyone, This Thursday I am running the Ireland stall at GEMS DSO's International Day. I have an Irish friend who has loaned me a number of items, but at the moment I am missing a big flag or bunting etc. If you have these in readiness to celebrate St Patrick's Day and I could possibly borrow for a day or two, I would really appreciate it. Also, if you have any Irish items that I could borrow to display on the table, I would really appreciate it. I am based in Semmer Villas so if you are there or in Cedre Villas I can drop by and pick them up. I am relatively new here and I'm not hugely confident on the roads yet hence the request to anyone in DSO! Thank you in advance. You can 2 of my work colleagues they are from Dublin ( joking of course) The party shop at Garhoud apparently has lots of Irish stuff
