Hi! You should do a search in the FB groups for French speakers such as Ze French in Dubai, French Ladies Dubai, Women in Dubai etc. From time to time, ladies from Francophone Africa (Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon) are looking for jobs there and advertise.

For beauty products I use strawberrynet.com, cultbeauty.com, spacenk.com, lookfantastic.com, and if you order for a certain amount (not very high really, something like $50) you get free shipping. Their prices are so much cheaper than Dubai, and the products are genuine. I have not bought cosmetics in Dubai in 10 years, because prices here are insane. Some eBay sellers, particularly those based in Asia, ship to Dubai for free. I use Shop & Ship for M&S, and occasionally Amazon. They have to be light things.

FYI -- Private one-to-one French classes, tailored to student's needs, with instructor coming to student's house were AED 200 6 years ago when I used to do that. I think it must be at least AED 250 by now. AED 75 is viable if you have several students but not for one student.

I would go AUS -- not AUD. AUS certification is air-tight and they have a really good reputation. AUD is very expensive for what they provide; check the fees at AUS, they might be close. AUS is accredited by Middle States, and has its own accreditation (not under an 'umbrella university' in the US like AUD). I am going to sound callous and give you an education professional's point of view (and I have been working in Higher Education for over 25 years). AUD pays faculty half the salary of other universities in the UAE, so they can only get people with little experience or not employable elsewhere. My 2-cents and I am working for a government university -- not AUS. HTH!

Hello, I have been diagnosed as "chronically depressed" a long time ago and here my 2 cents. Your friend needs to address the medication issue with her psychiatrist; there are many antidepressants on the market and switching meds or even dosage of the same med can bring a change. I have seen that in my own case. Medication and psychotherapy work together, but I don't believe they cancel each other. Besides meds, she might want to look into therapy, and it is critical to find the right therapy / therapist for concrete results. It's long term with therapy; meds (may) have immediate results (if administered right) but don't address the cause of the depression. Nutrition has an impact too and everything else that others mentioned in this thread. Fighting depression is an uphill battle! One day at a time! HTH

The issue is whether a university outside the UAE would even acknowledge your daughter has a BA, and would allow her to register in a MA program. "Non-accredited" means that outside a specific country, no one considers your degree has any value.

AUS is accredited by Middle States in the US, which means most other countries in the world will recognize that you have the degree they grant you. Some universities are accredited by the Ministry of Education of the UAE, which makes their degrees not as... useful, if you are an expat. You need to check which agency is accrediting the university you want to attend, and btw all of them require an IELTS score of course (if the medium of instruction is English). I don't know who accredits Wollongong... and I do not work for AUS. I am just in the education business and that's where I would put my money. Expensive but worth it!

Lots of scams with used cars. I'd be really careful, and make sure it is checked etc. Another issue I heard about is that spare parts on luxury cars are quite expensive, that's why people sell luxury cars after a few years. I am not an expert in any way but that's just my 2 cents...

To make a long story short (and btw I do work in Academia) one university in the UAE that's worth the financial investment is American University in Sharjah. Unlike AUD which is accredited by an "umbrella" university in the US, AUS has its own accreditation by Middle States. NYU Abu Dhabi is supposed to be quite good as well but I am not sure it has its individual accreditation yet. HTH

I have been ordering from lookfantastic for a good 8 years and packages always made it in 2+ weeks. This time, I have been waiting for 3+ weeks. I am not sure what is going on! They've always been very dependable, even replaced a faulty machine they sold me so I am just annoyed, not worried!

I am sorry I don't have precise information on quetiapine. I would really recommend that you come with at least 6 months of your medication, and take the original prescription with you in case they ask questions at the airport. What I wrote a few years ago is still valid: not all psychiatric meds are available here and mostly they are often out of stock. HTH

It's been bad lately. My SO (architect working on big projects) was approached for a job in Bahrain, and accepted because he could see that he would be out of his job in Dubai soon. The project he was working on was quite messy in its internal politics; people were being let go and not necessarily replaced. Fast forward to Bahrain a couple of weeks later (now) -- everyone working with him on this new project used to work in Dubai, and is hoping for an opportunity to come back. Many are commuting on weekends.

These types of institutes pay around AED 100 (rather less than over that amount) per hour depending on your experience. They immediately tell you that they do not provide a residency visa. I got offers like that last fall, as I was looking into supplementing my income. Eton was one of them.

I think that in order to teach ESL in the GCC, you need to have at least a BA and a CELTA certificate: http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-qualifications/celta/ A lot of teachers I know have a MA + CELTA. edited by Loukoum on 18/06/2014

Ty so much for your answers. I am looking for a dental practice with both experienced implantologist and dentist. Dr Roze is a very good implantologist, and extremely experienced. I have always been very happy with his work (and I have a lot of implants he placed). What threw me off last time I was there was that the new dentist working with him (replacing Dr Eva) is young and not as experienced as I wish. As a result, I am now looking for a new dental team, because let's face it, I am beyond crowns and my next emergency will be another implant with crown! PS. I used to be at Nicholas & Asp with Dr Sven and don't want to use their services again. edited by Loukoum on 11/06/2014

Are you sure you want to come to Dubai if you are going to count pennies and struggle with bills? I am here because I make a reasonable living, enjoy Dubai and have some savings at the end of the day. Why not stay where you are living currently? I don't mean to be nasty, it's a genuine question you have to ask yourself.

Anyone know what the fine is for those involved in the illegal employment of private tutors? You do know there's been a crack-down on this here in recent years? Teachers tutoring pupils from the schools which employ them are likely to be worst hit if discovered, I believe. But I could be wrong, and like the illegal employment of part-time maids, it may be something which we're warned about having major repercussions, but in the event, the authorities mostly turn a blind eye to it. ETA: If I were a private tutor in Dubai, I'd be wary of touting for business on these pages. edited by Vdella on 05/09/2013 Well, there is indeed a problem with tutors -- but even institutes! I'd be more worried of getting caught there than working on my own. Let's be real. Those places which offered me AED 60 an hour, making a minimum 200% profit on what they would pay me -- had I accepted -- all stressed the same thing: we cannot provide you with a visa. Then they all added: does your current employer provide you with a visa? What it tells me: those places offer me a job illegally. If I am going to be working illegally (which I will in both cases) do you think I prefer making AED 60 or AED 200 per hour? In which circumstances will I care more about my students? When I feel exploited or not? edited by Loukoum on 05/09/2013

I went for a job there and she offered me aed95 an hour which is what I was getting 15 years ago. This was higher than normal she said because of my experience. They work you really hard with lessons plans to be typed for every lesson and other admin work. The minimum I expect to be paid is aed150 an hour and places like UOWD and the British Council were paying that. In my opinion it's an underpaid job with the institutions making a lot of money Same experience as you Bird with Eton, and I have the degrees and the experience. An institute even offered me AED 60 an hour -- if you can believe it. A cleaner (I know the company gets that money but still) is paid AED 35 an hour!!! Who do they get for that kind of money, and what do they know about teaching? You have to be really desperate to accept that kind of a job!!

I would be worried that Eton is producing a certificate that they are the only ones to recognize. Hence you are paying to eventually work for them. Let me add to that -- Eton has tried to recruit me a couple of times for French and ESL, and they are offering really low hourly rates. That's why I will not work for them, and I am not sure if any *real* teaching professionals actually work for rates like that. What I am saying above is simply my own observation. CELTA is world-recognized. Big difference! HTH

Click on those recent links and you'll have some answers re: psychiatrists: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic198769-need-recommendations-for-a-psychiatrist-please-not-a-psychologist.aspx http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic204712-looking-for-a-good-psychiatrist.aspx Regarding getting off any kind of psychiatric medication, you need to do it very very slowly (speaking from my own experience). I cut my intake of tranquillizers (a low dose taken for 20 years) by two a couple of years ago. It took me a year to stabilize. Now, I may try over the summer to lower my intake, but first I will take my med every other day for at least 6 months before I entirely come off. HTH edited by Loukoum on 31/05/2013

Lynett - It's a very sad story and I want to send you a big hug. I think you will not be able to snap out of your victim role unless you are seeing a counselor or a therapist. Your abusive father is now replaced by an abusive husband, and you desperately need to get out of this cycle of abuse by the men in your life. Therapy (if you can afford it), your own income through a job are the two things you must aim at. You need to heal inside too in order to be able to truly move on -- and you owe it to your child. edited by Loukoum on 25/05/2013
