I stopped flying AF about 30 years ago - it seems they haven't improved in the interim:) I fly them every year and they are OK - very convenient if you need to fly to the south of France!

klm is good and amsterdam is all on one level quite a good airport, better than cdg anyways. Last time I ever flew KLM to the US, they lost my luggage each way! I was not amused... Never again! That being said, Amsterdam is better than CDG edited by Loukoum on 01/05/2013

You might want to check Dr Celen @ Belhoul Specialty Hospital. She is a psychiatrist trained in Austria (I know, not the US). Pros and cons like for most shrinks around here...

Just to let you know -- Alliance will not teach French history, just language courses. They used have a book to prepare you for DELF, because there are specific types of tests (if I recall) and you may want to check into that. Culture & Co., the French bookstore on Oud Metha Rd. across from RSA, also carries those books.

I remember a few years back, a colleague who "wanted to save more" (I quote him) decided not to buy a car, whereas he had a European driving licence. He then proceeded to try and bum a ride from everyone who had a car and lived in the same building. You'd want to hide when you saw him at the door to your office!! Along the same lines, another couple was getting regular rides from a kind neighbor, and had decided not to get a car because it was cheaper to give her as a gift a bottle of wine every month rather than buy their own car. Weird but true...

This is a test (not an exam) and my understanding is that you have to get to a certain level (B1). It means that you express yourself, write, read at that proficiency level in French but there is no need to prove you passed the previous levels. OH did it for six months, as his company posted him in Muscat. He would drive over every Wednesday night and back to Muscat on Friday night. We are glad I did not change jobs and move to Muscat, since after 11 months of that, he was laid off. He is now commuting every day to Abu Dhabi, which is difficult too. At the time (3 years ago) rents and everyday staples in Muscat were the same price as in Dubai. Cheaper living in Muscat is a myth, he says...

You should indeed place that ring away for now and forget about it all. Then you can decide what to do with it. Since he is the one who broke off the engagement (and over SMS to boot), I would definitely not return the ring.

We all have different takes, and I love Ubud. There are museums, spas, a great market, lovely boutiques, cafes and restaurants. You can organize trips from there to other parts of the island. I spent a week there over Xmas and was not bored for a minute. I am going back for Easter and spending 10 days. Great place to chill, and tons of things to do!

I fly Emirates to KL (the night flight). There is a really cheap shuttle bus between the International Terminal and the Low Cost terminal. At the Low Cost Terminal I fly to Bali on Air Asia. Good planes and good flight. Make sure there is plenty of time between the flights as the 2 terminals are far. Everything can be booked online of course. I am no specialist but this is what I do. Other airlines out of Dubai to KL may be cheaper than Emirates...

When I first saw a psychiatrist in Dubai, I explained my situation and my treatment but never had to provide a letter from my doctor in France. Just make sure the doctor tells you where to go for the meds because, at times, pharmacies are out of stock. At this point, I get a year supply of medication in France and travel with the prescription -- because it is cheaper outside the UAE, but mostly because I do not want to have to "hunt" for my Effexor. I had to go once around Dubai with my prescription, and it was both unnecessary and demeaning. BTW I was stopped once at customs because of the meds, but there was no problem because I had the prescription. Psychiatrists in Dubai are just not the same "caliber" (for lack of a better word) as in other countries and I still have my shrink in France. I am not sure I would trust any of the ones I met with making decisions about my meds. HTH edited by Loukoum on 20/02/2013

They do because the dentist actually makes a hole in your jaw to stick the big peg that is in fact the implant!

Hello, I was looking for Stephanie Karl, a nutritionist that used to work at Dubai London Clinic, and found out she is now working at XY Clinic on Al Wasl Rd. Has anyone here been there and what is it like? They seem to do a lot of testing before giving you a diet and is it working? How expensive is it? I need to go on a diet since I have issues with blood pressure, and would also have issues with cholesterol and diabetis if I do not do anything about what I eat. TIA for any recommendation for a good nutritionist or feedback on XY Clinic.

Hi missbojanita - Here is my experience with implants. I have so far 1 implant with crown, and just got 2 placed a couple of days ago. My understanding is that you must have the right jaw (wide enough bone) to have implants. My dentist had some special x-ray done to determine that. My jaw is sore right now because the extractions happened a couple of days ago and the implants were just placed. I cannot say placing the implants hurt but the extractions were difficult (of course). I do not have any pain with the implant placed 3 years ago. Extra attention -- flossing, brushing, cleaning every 6 months, all that done for regular teeth too. Per tooth, 2 prices for implants quoted by my dentist: AED 7,500 or AED 9,500 Crown: AED 4,000. Implant pegs are put at the time of the extraction. Crown is placed about 6 months later. I cannot eat on that side of the mouth during that time. I used the same dentist for the three, because I was very happy with the result of the 1st implant: Dr David Roze.

I looked into it and did not take malaria preventative meds. My understanding is that, if you go to Siem Reap in Cambodia (often associated to a trip to Vientnam), you need to take it because there is a lot of stagnant water. Otherwise, it is not necessary. edited by Loukoum on 10/01/2013

Am answering my own question! Found Dr David Roze (complex google search sort of on Dubai websites in French) at his own clinic on Beach Road and this clinic can be reached @ 04 388 13 13. I know, in other discussions, some ladies were not able to get his new work address and number so for anyone looking for a very professional dentist for implants...

I love bags, beautiful bags, and have a few designers bags to my name. However, I would not buy an expensive second-hand bag may (or may not) be a fake. Too much money and uncertainty involved. Buying a designer bag is first of all buying something you love; it is not an investment!

Just a note to anyone who has an Abu Dhabi Residency visa and is applying for an Indian tourist visa in Dubai (such as my SO). I need to provide a letter from the company saying that my SO lives in Dubai, with a company stamp on his picture stuck on the letter. I think the Indian Consulate is quite imaginative in its requests! Never fear! :) edited by Loukoum on 07/10/2012

Before I became a US citizen, I had a Green Card and my sense was that once you lost that status, you were back on a Tourist visa, student visa or whatever... There are some very stringent rules that come with a GC, for instance, you cannot be out of the US for more than 6 months etc. I don't know how your husband got his GC in the first place, but he would probably have to go through that process again (if he can). Owning property does not make a difference -- as far as I know. You might want to consult an immigration lawyer to make sure. HTH

Thank you, Expatriate! I was speaking of people having the actual experience of the visa process @ the Port Saeed office. I think Indian bureaucracy is one of the most imaginative in the world and I dread that. Along the same lines, I remember, last time at the Chinese Consulate, being the only one who actually managed to get her documents processed that day because I had everything they asked for and more (they asked for my SO's egate card, which they all of a sudden decided was necessary).

I used to work in Academia in the US and it is no different here in Dubai. I enjoy it but we are a bunch of neurotic brats -- brains but not necessarily a lot of common sense. I did work in the corporate world as well and miss it at times. I find Academia more colorful and eccentric. It's kind of fun! :)

Being hired depends on where you got your degree(s): an accredited Western university is preferable. Your salary depends on your field and your experience. There is huge competition (from what we hear) because the job market in Academia is so bad right now in the US and the UK. HTH edited by Loukoum on 28/09/2012
