I'd be livid if my DH's ex-wife showed up at a family funeral. It would be humilitating for her as it would seem she still wanted to be with my DH and I wouldn't make it easy for her. I'm the wife now and if she loved his family so much, she shouldn't have let him go. I feel the exact same way. And it happened to me before. ( I was the new wife). Same for me here! Ex-wives can be very difficult!! :\:

I sold my car very fast on Dubizzle last fall, so it does work! Everyone in Dubai wants a discount, so make sure you put it a little bit higher than what you want to sell it at.

I really like the Anne Semonin beauty products, which I can get at Park Hyatt Spa. However, a 65-Euro cream becomes a AED 850 purchase. This means the spa essentially triples the price of the product. Anyone has found a cheaper way to get the products? S&S does not mail creams, as far as I know. TIA

Either go in the morning or late afternoon (aft. 4 or 5). I tried to go there early afternoon but all stores were closed.

A multivitamin called "Fortcapil", which I get in France, really worked and taking Brewer's Yeast at every meal. I was really worried I was going bald but now it is better.

As I discovered when I booked our flights to Beijing on QA, you cannot reserve your seat more than 3 days in advance in economy. In other words, you pay but you do not know where you are going to sit. A friend who travels a lot told me it is not as "professional" as Emirates.

For a rental car, I believe your agency will pay the fine and you will reimburse them. Also my SO has been renting cars for years, and the fine never shows up on the Dubai Police website.

I got caught a couple of times with Aramex Shop & Ship. The threshold is $250, and above that you pay customs / import duty. S&S, these days, open every package I get -- no exception.

Interestingly enough, a language institute in Knowledge Village (E....n) wanted to hire my services for AED 100 an hour. I wonder who they get for these rates and how much they charge the clients. I cannot believe any real qualified teacher would work for this kind of money! edited by Annick on 22/09/2011

Piggle -- I'd be as upset as you are if the same had happened to me! Fortunately so far, in 2+ years, I have had no problem with strawberrynet.com. Their prices are so good compared to what I find in Dubai at Paris Gallery or Areej!

No it is only through the post office so make sure you put your PO Box, not your home address. I have been ordering from strawberrynet for 2+ years and receiving the packages at my PO Box, so I can guarantee that system works. I know nothing about the "physical/home address" you mention, and would not trust it here in Dubai.

strawberrynet packages are delivered to my PO Box as a regular package (non-registered). I just placed an order with them and it can be confusing, since there is only one option saying: "Registered mail - FREE".

Debenham's stopped carrying Laura Mercier years ago and I don't believe any store has it -- to my knowledge. You can order Laura Mercier from Hong Kong through www.strawberrynet.com and it is delivered in about 10 working days to your PO Box. Their prices are similar to US prices, whereas all cosmetics in Dubai are so much more expensive.

I sold my car on Dubizzle in 45 mn, one Friday evening between 9 and 9:45 pm. The minute I pressed the "Send" button for my Toyota Corolla (Western lady owned & driven!!), the phone started ringing. I found myself on the parking lot of Deira City Center with two young Yemenis at 9:40 pm, who absolutely wanted to see the car right there and then. They spoke pidgen English and I spoke pidgen Arabic. We got down to business and I called their bluff. Business was settled at Motor Vehicles the following day! Very satisfying experience but I did not expect it would be done so fast and I had to rent a car for the week I did not have my new car. edited by Annick on 04/09/2011

yep always been stricter down here in the capital, but you do need an id card if you are new, ie for drivers licence and to register a new car. more will follow Here in Dubai, I bought a new car in November and no one asked me for my Emirates ID card. I previously re-registered a car too and no one asked me for my Emirates ID card. I am yet to understand what I could use my Emirates ID card for!

We got our cards three years ago. Does it mean they're now expired and we need to go through the whole rigamarole process? Or do we just have it automatically renewed by handing it over? I'm dreading the long queues.... It generally expires with your residency visa.

At risk of sounding like a numpty, if I want to renew my ID card what exactly do I have to do? Can I just turn up at the ID center with my old card and my passport? Will they do all the paperwork for me there? Do I need a letter of No Objection or anything daft like that? Thanks Yes, just turn up with old card + passport + cash (AED 370 in my case). That's what I did this morning.

This morning I made it to the Emirates ID center in Al Barsha at 8:15 to renew my card; it had lapsed last summer. The threat of a fine got me there, because honestly no one in the past couple of years has ever asked me for my Emirates ID. My conclusion is that so far it's been of no use whatsoever to me! I was number 30 at 8:15. However, the 2 ladies at the "Tayping" section (that's what my ticket said) were just settling in. They were actually fairly efficient, if not particularly talkative, once they started. I paid AED 370 for the card, with tayping included. :\: Here is my question: the service lady spoke about a SMS in 3 weeks but I am not sure what I am supposed to do then. Pick it up from somewhere?? The first time around it was delivered to me. :\: Am really not amused by this whole charade!

I was in Jordan this January and a couple of Januaries ago. Great weather for Petra but rain in Amman and chilly weather in Aqaba and at the Dead Sea. Too cold to go into the sea basically but very sunny and pleasant otherwise. I agree with "unpredictable"!

That one time I flew Delta, there were indeed a lot of spare seats, though the flight (online) seemed to be fully booked. Soldiers and contractors both, I would say. Not the people I would normally find on a flight (in such big numbers) but fine in the end.

I flew Economy on Delta, Dubai-Atlanta, and to my great surprise it was actually good. Last year, I flew United to DC and really hated it (old plane, little leg room, bad food, rudimentary in-flight audio/video etc). Delta has a lot better service, a reasonably old plane with decent in-flight entertainment, decent food. It is full of US Army people coming from Iraq, Afghanistan etc. so it makes for a strange atmosphere of hyped up testoterone in the waiting room but once on the flight you forget about it and the experience is fine. I chose Delta because I'd had such a bad flight with United, and did not regret it. I'll fly with them again if I want a direct flight to the US and do not feel like paying Emirates prices. edited by Annick on 24/06/2011

Hi, Thousand pardon Sundevil, i don't mean to hijack your thread but I'm also invited to an Emirati wedding next week (unfo. DH is not invited) and don't really know how to dress and what present to offer. Please Sundevil, if you can update some news after about the wedding. TIA Have a good time tomorrow. First of all no present to bring. Put your dressiest outfit on, like something you would wear for New Year's Eve and you will not be out of place! Shaks and I have great fun at local weddings! :)

I always like a hotel whose management answers negative comments, shows you they care about public perception TA is my bible for hotels and traveling. However, I react in the opposite way to the person above. I found out that those hotel managers who respond to TA comments are too dependent on the business generated by the website, and that does not bode well. Actually, one tried to bribe me once in Kathmandu so that I do not write a negative review on the spotty hot water during the first 2 nights of our stay. He was [b'>always[/b'> on TA responding.

There is a difference between being a lady's man and forcing s*x on a hotel maid. The French press does not know whether it is a set up or attempted rape or what...
